STONEMASONRY HUB

Date 12/2022 - 06/2023

Studio Alisdair Russel, Andrew Cross Role Author

This is a habitat for stonemasons that explores various stone architectures. It houses living, academic, production, and public facilities. They are built in a dilapidated area of the historically significant Liverpool Docks and hope to restore public interest in the neighborhood. The design refurbishes two 19th century warehouses (grade II listed buildings) and blends historical english stonemasonry with Haussmanian and Japanese design influences.

A key public feature is the suspended walkway which can be accessed from pavilions placed at strategic flow points. At an elevation of 6.4 meters, visitors can observe craftsmen and their students as well as stone related displays.

At 6.4 meters, the public views workshops and stone artefacts from a different perspective. This element was included to showcase the beauty of stone from all angles and stonemasons at work whist giving them a sense of privacy.

/ LEVELS 3 to 5 - Autocad, Photoshop

Stonemasons and apprentices can stay on-site. Studio appartments with shared kitchen and laundry facilities provide a resting space whilst encouring the users to socialise. Indeed, the communal spaces are orientated south or adjacent to the heart of the site (i.e. between the grade II listed buildings).

/ Chisel 102, Acrylic on canvas, January 2024, 61 x 50 cm

This piece blends the schematics developed for Chisel 101 (longitudinal section and shadows), instinct, and painting techniques that I was re-discovering.

Quantity and speed is how I approached my education in architecture. This allowed me to freely experiment with forms and understand ‘humane’ proportions when my BIM skills were not up to par. Now that I have a clear idea of what type of architect I would like to be, I can throw myself in the quagmire of computational design.

Date 04/2022 - 06/2022

Studio Farida Makki

Role Author / Zoning, Photoshop

This elementary school houses 2 classes of 25 pupils per year (hosts 4 academic years). Students are encouraged to produce graffiti and appropriate themselves the building.

The scheme explores the education experience in urban environments by breaking the ‘no graffiti’ rule and creatively exploiting the maximum of space and daylight.

The design also embraces the studio theme of ‘foraging’ as construction materials and canvases are reclaimed from abandoned materials around the 10 Streets - namely, corrugated sheet metal and clay bricks.
