During this past fiscal year, I have had the privilege to represent the BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay. As I reflect on this period of time, I am tremendously proud to be the standard bearer (locally) of an organization that is more than 100 years old. When considering such a monumental achievement one must consider how this is even possible. One of the best ways to summarize this continuing success is to get at the core of why BBB remains relevant in this ever changing, fast-paced world. For me it is reflected in the words, trust in the marketplace. For millennia human beings have gathered to trade goods and services. Embedded in this activity is the core value of trust. Business people and consumers must trust in each other to make this relationship work. Yet, this is not blind trust. It is earned by delivering goods and services that meet or exceed set standards. When an error or oversight occurs the issue is addressed and fixed. Simply put BBB epitomizes this trust relationship by carrying out a range of programs that support informed consumer purchasing decisions, businesses operating ethically and much more. Why do I mention all of this? Because it is during times, when our communities face serious challenges, that we look to the people and organizations we know will be there for us. BBB is one of those foundational organizations, supporting opportunity and safeguarding standards. Trust. This is why reflecting on the past year and looking forward to another, I remain steadfastly optimistic about BBB and the communities where we operate. BBB is more than a century old because it delivers “the goods” on a daily basis. This did not change in 2020/2021, and it will not change in the future, as we move forward, together.

As you’ve undoubtedly noticed the word TRUST appears on the cover of our 2020/2021 annual report. According to Merriam Webster the word dates back to Middle English. The word trust can serve as both a noun and a verb. Therefore, we can have confidence because of trust, and also assign it to others, as in, I trust you. As you further consider the cover of this annual report you will have also observed the word itself is a composite created from multiple images. These are photos of business owners that put their trust in BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay by becoming Accredited Businesses. This means they accept and live by the 13 factors that comprise how a business is rated by BBB. Factors including its history, the type of business, transparent business practices and 10 more which can be readily viewed at BBB.org. What emerges is a snapshot of business people who have collectively been operating in the community for hundreds of years. One, for example, is a Calgarybased upholstery company that is set to enter its eighty seventh year, yes, 87. A family-owned enterprise that now encompasses four generations. A more recent Accredited Business, also captured in the TRUST mosaic on the cover of this report, is a wellness enterprise operating for 11 years and now accredited for the past two. No matter if new to BBB, or connected for decades, what binds all of us together is a compact of trust. These facts also inform us about what we can anticipate in the future. And this is key to why BBB remains so positive and optimistic, and why we are community strong. Through the demonstration and acceptance of trust; individuals, businesses and entire communities can thrive, even while navigating the most challenging of circumstances. Because of your trust in us, BBB will continue to post thousands of business reviews, host business people at events both in person and virtually, get our message out to consumers through our positive relationship with the media, investigate and process consumer complaints, and welcome hundreds of Accredited Businesses every year.
Ultimately trust is a relationship; a relationship that BBB is dedicated to upholding as an organization advancing the marketplace on behalf of consumers and business. This is the Trust Revolution.

BBB Serving Southern Alberta & East Kootenay extend our deepest sympathies to David Steele’s family and loved ones. A great man that dedicated more than 25 years of service to enhancing BBB’s mission and vision. During his time with BBB, he served as Chair of the Board of Directors, for Better Business Bureau of Southern Alberta and East Kootenay and as a member of the board of the Canadian Council of Better Business Bureaus. As an organization, we will continue to see the benefit of his contributions for years to come. David was generous with his time, attention, wisdom, and his friendship; he will be deeply missed. Fraud Prevention Month 2021 experienced unprecedented activity kicking off on March 1 with your BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay hosting a joint news conference with the Calgary Police Service. President and CEO, Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen was joined by the head of the CPS Fraud Unit, Jon Pye. The conference took place at CPS headquarters and was attended by 10 media outlets via remote link, including CBC, CTV, and Global. During the conference Mary and Const. Pye spoke about how to recognize, prevent and report fraud. The two main days of media coverage of the press conference resulted in unique views of 73 million and being actively engaged by 574,000 people. These are huge numbers which translate into your BBB demonstrating the ability to directly connect with consumers and the business community on practical measures they can take to protect themselves and their businesses from scammers. This underscores how BBB carries out meaningful activities that contribute to a strong community and builds trust in the marketplace.

Media coverage of Fraud Prevention Month occurred throughout the month of March with a press release being distributed on the five Mondays of the month. This included National Password Day on March 15 and National Puppy Day on March 23 with president and CEO, Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen conducting five interviews that day including two on live television. Overall media coverage during BBB’s Fraud Prevention Month resulted in earned media valued at $164,000 with unique viewers clocking in at 365 million and a reach of 2.3 million people. These figures are verified by the media organization CISION. Another joint activity with CPS was a live Twitter event to discuss fraud and fraud prevention. This real-time event on Twitter was a first for your BBB and resulted in one Tweet having more than 5,000 impressions. Again, what this means is our community being provided vital information from trusted authorities on how to recognize, stop and report fraud.

Additional social media activity included a campaign noting the relevance of BBB throughout the decades. Often referred to as a ‘nostalgia campaign’ the images used were originally created in the 1950’s and then bookended with an updated graphic to take on a contemporary appearance. The key message: BBB is as relevant to consumers and the business community now as it ever was. Beyond the extensive media coverage and social media activity during Fraud Prevention Month there was a whole host of other events such as 10 webinars resulting in attendance of 170. The webinar with the greatest engagement was a joint offering with Calgary Catholic Immigration Society to help educate new Canadians about common scams. Planning with our partners for Fraud Prevention Month 2022 is already underway and is expected to be better than ever.

BBB’s Scam Tracker, now in its sixth year, is an easy-to-use, online tool that allows consumers and businesses to report scams and view past fraudulent activities that have occurred in their local communities. In 2020 there were more than 1.4 million unique visitors to Scam Tracker - an increase of 17 per cent. With research conducted by BBB’s Institute for Marketplace Trust, it’s estimated Scam Tracker helped Canadians avoid more than $21 million in losses. Of course what’s not captured in the figures is the heartache caused when a consumer or business, acting in good faith, is scammed. Purchases made online were particularly fraught with one third of all scams reported in 2020 related to this activity. These scams are carried out via text message, email, fraudulent websites and social media channels. In the past fiscal year, advance fee loans were the number one scam. This occurs when a fraudulent lender makes an offer to loan money, as long as a fee is paid upfront to process the application. Once the fee is paid the fraudster disappears along with your money.

Here’s a verbatim quote from one Calgary victim of an advance fee loan scam that was reported on Scam Tracker:
"I was told that I was approved for a loan and I didn't have any collateral and so they wanted $910 and then said I was actually approved for higher but needed another $950 and kept saying everything was good and the money would be deposited in 1-2 hours . Their website also indicates 1-2 hours and so does the loan contract I signed . And yet today come up with another story and wanting another $1,950.00 and so I told them to cancel this loan and I want my money back in which they say it will take one week to 1.5 weeks . I am livid and just want my money back . Beware everyone." Beware indeed. Fraudsters are equal opportunists with women being exposed to, and reporting more scams than men, while men reported higher (median) losses than women. Perhaps surprisingly to many is that Canadians in the 25 to 54 age cohort experienced the steepest (median) losses at $293. What emerges is the fact that anyone can be a potential victim of a scammer. Fortunately, because of the robust use of Scam Tracker, consumers and businesses are reporting this fraudulent activity and saving many other Canadians from enduring emotional pain and financial loss. C A M I E L E A R D : G R O W T H T H R O U G H I N T E G R I T Y A N D T R U S T Camie Leard grew up in Calgary and began her career with BBB in 2013 as the director of marketing and communications. Within eight months, she was promoted to vice-president of marketing communications and also took on leadership of the advertising sales teams, as well as growing the marketing and communication team in the following years. She says her favourite memory of working at BBB was growing the annual general meetings from a small gathering of board members to major networking events bringing hundreds of small business owners together to celebrate integrity. Camie left BBB in Aug. 2020 and is currently serving as the executive director of the Crescent Heights Village Business Improvement Area as well as editor of Savour Calgary magazine. In her spare time, she runs the Camie Leard Band and is a visual artist, writer, and novice gardener. Our BBB team thanks Camie for her years of dedicated service and wishes her well in all of her future endeavours.
B B B R A M P S U P I T S E A R N E D M E D I A O U T R E A C H It’s all too commonplace to disparage the news media in today’s environment. We at BBB proudly take a very different view knowing the value and professionalism journalists bring to their work everyday. Your BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay endeavours to cultivate positive relationships with journalists working at media outlets in radio, television, print, and online. Through these relationships we are able to warn consumers, and the business community, about a range of frauds, which in 2020/2021 included advance fee loans, jobs, romance, and puppy scams, to name only a few. What this means is millions of people have been forewarned about such scams and can then take action to avoid being victimized. We know that only a fraction of those scammed, as few as 5 per cent, report these incidents. Therefore, getting trustworthy information out about these scammers has an outsized impact; an impact that helps viewers and readers of BBB related editorial content from being fleeced out of millions of dollars. Or, even worse, losing one’s digital identity which is then used to obtain fraudulent loans or mortgages. If this makes you take pause, we understand. These scenarios are both frightening and all too frequent.
B B B R A M P S U P I T S E A R N E D M E D I A O U T R E A C H Our relationship with the media is so effective that BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay reached more than 69 million people over the course of the fiscal year with a reported value of this coverage pegged at more than $492,000. This is what in the news business is known as “earned media.” In other words, not advertisements. News stories crafted by journalists because of their interest in what BBB is sharing and the value it represents to their respective audiences located from Calgary to Cranbrook, Lethbridge to Longview, and every point in between. Of course our earned media program is about much more than just scammers and charlatans. In 2020/2021, BBB got the word out about a wide array of topics such as the Torch Awards, and news about our very own Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen being appointed as a member of the board of the International Association of Better Business Bureaus. Although, we’re happy to add, she’s staying right here in Calgary.

Topics can range from buying blooms online to how to go about hiring a local contractor that you can trust. All of this activity is designed with one motive in mind. To build trust in the marketplace which in turn strengthens the communities we serve. Your BBB, through its earned media program, is proudly, community strong. Highlights include: Live interviews on CTV and Global for National Puppy Day highlighting how consumers can avoid puppy scams. Live interview on Global highlighting National Password Day. T R U S T C A M P A I G N S H I N E S A S P O T L I G H T O N B B B ’ S A C C R E D I T E D B U S I N E S S E S Your BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay launched the Trust Campaign to shine a well deserved spotlight on participating Accredited Businesses. The response is impressive with businesses new to the BBB getting involved and ones which have been operating for decades. Businesses that are proud to stand up for the values that BBB represents, trust, respect, integrity, transparency. From property management to wellness these businesses represent a diverse range of sectors and industries all bound together under the seal of BBB. We celebrated them by sending out posts on our social media channels and co-hosting webinars. During those conversations they shared the challenges of operating in today’s atmosphere and how to thrive in these same conditions. They told us how BBB helps them to succeed and how we can do even better. We talk a lot about trust at BBB and it’s worth repeating. It’s earned by one’s actions and performance. Accredited Businesses at BBB have gone through the accreditation process knowing that they are making a commitment to upholding values that don’t change with the latest trend. The next time you hear about one of the 3,335 Accredited Businesses, think about the thousands of individuals; your friends, family members, and colleagues who work every day to provide goods and services you can trust. The Trust Campaign, which will continue into 2022, is the thousands of BBB Accredited Businesses represented throughout Southern Alberta and East Kootenay. They are an integral part of what it means to be Community Strong.

As part of BBB’s mandate in advancing marketplace trust we also maintain an effective investigations program. Each investigation is unique and serves to proactively identify marketplace practices that are deceptive, misleading, unethical, or should be called into question. BBB seeks voluntary correction of such practices by the business involved; however if self-regulatory efforts fail, then the objective must be to inform the public of the existence of such practices and action they may take to protect themselves from being victimized; as well as to. advise and cooperate with appropriate law enforcement agencies seeking to eradicate such practices. In 2020/2021, your BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay conducted 31 investigations in our local service area. Your BBB was successful in identifying and working with a legitimate business committed to self regulatory efforts to improve their image of trust in the marketplace by addressing red flags that would be perceived as substandard marketplace behaviour. Your BBB was also successful in identifying and warning consumers of unethical marketplace practices, including fraudulent business, and involving appropriate law enforcement and governing regulatory bodies, and even a fraudulent business in our service area that reached across North America in an investment scam.

BBB’s investigations play a critical role in achieving our mission to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust. Consumers can be confident that BBB is a trusted source for marketplace information and businesses committed to ethical marketplace behaviours have support from BBB to achieve this. Across North America, during this past fiscal year, puppy scams have been on a dramatic rise. This often means deposits made to fraudsters posing as breeders where no puppies exist. Your BBB is unfortunately no exception to this trend with one local business, which claims to be a legitimate breeder, accepting deposits from customers and then ceasing any further communication. BBB contacted this business as part of the investigation process but there was no response. The operator is not an Accredited Business and the information outlining the concerning behaviour is available online for anyone to read. It’s another way BBB makes valuable information available directly to consumers so they too won't become victims of unethical or fraudulent enterprises. Consumers are reminded that if they believe they have been the subject of scam to report this information to the police through the nonemergency number and by reporting it to Better Business Bureau at BBB.org.

It started with a discussion and ended with the launch of BBB’s inaugural Small Business Week. Designed and created directly from conversations with the thousands of Accredited Businesses we spoke with throughout the pandemic; a series of webinars and workshops were guided or facilitated by fellow Accredited Businesses, all experts in their fields of industry. Held in October, during Small Business Week in Calgary, in all, more than 100 businesses attended 12 webinars and two workshops held over four days geared towards providing Accredited Businesses a chance to learn, to be inspired, to connect and to celebrate. In keeping with the spirit of resiliency and trust, the webinars provided businesses with education on refocusing their business plans, financial planning, creating respectful and engaging workplaces. Webinars also included motivating and celebrating business owners with resilient mindsets, and inspiring business leaders with a powerful workshop on how to diversify their markets to attract new customers. Business owners were also provided with knowledge and ideas to save money on operating expenses and were treated to an incredible hourlong workshop on why trust in leadership matters.

With information changing by the day, many people were feeling on shaky ground and didn’t know where to turn. Your BBB took action and within a week of government restrictions and shutdowns, launched a robust series of webinars and workshops. For the months of March, April, May and June, BBB partnered with numerous industry experts and community partners to arm business owners and consumers with crucial knowledge to navigate through some difficult times. BBB Delivers: A COVID-19 Ask the Expert series consisted of 21 webinars and one workshop covering business focused topics like business planning, crisis management and communication, pivoting business models to support telework and online sales, business continuity, financial options and economic outlooks. Topics such as COVID-19 scams and how to spot them, how to hire a contractor in addition to mental health and resiliency webinars which provided support, tools and resources to business owners, consumers and our community at large. Throughout the past fiscal year your BBB has proudly operated to meet the needs of those we serve with an unlecting focus on supporting trust in the marketplace, as we have continued to do for more than 100 years.
