OD Harris Serves CELEBRATE MLK City In New Role
The Chandler City Council voted during its Jan. 11 meeting to elect Councilmember O. D. Harris as the city’s new Vice Mayor. Harris will serve in the position through Jan. 9, 2025. “Our community is at the heart of everything that I do – it’s why I ran for Council in the first place,” Harris said. “I thank my colleagues for giving me the opportunity to further serve in this capacity and I am looking forward to the year ahead.” A U.S. Army Veteran, entrepreneur and business owner, Vice Mayor Harris began his first term on the City Council in January 2021. Vice Mayor Harris has been committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming Chandler for all residents. He prioritizes mental health programming and partnerships, recognizing the vital role it plays in the well-being of our community. By Dee Ford Byas lendale resident Patrice Hoover says she always attends the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Phoenix, and this year was no different as she joined thousands for the six-hour festival at Margaret T. Hance Park. Following a commemorative march, which began about 9am at East Lake Park, people walked on a route together to end up at Margaret T. Hance Park for the festivities honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his birthday, Jan. 15.

With the momentum of National School Choice Week behind them, Black Mothers Forum is hosting a large-scale rally at the nation’s capital on Wednesday, Jan. 24. Set against the iconic backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, the rally will amplify voices of resilience and justice in education, sparking a movement for safer schools and greater access to education options for each family and child. The event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the Lincoln Memorial Mall (2 Lincoln Memorial Cir. NW). Nearly 2,500 participants are expected to attend the event planned by groups including Engaged Detroit, the National Parents Union, American Federation for Children, and the Center for Education Reform. The event will bring together school choice leaders, students and educators from public and private schools, and mothers from across the country.
