History: Our golden eagle, Ishta was hit by a car and sustained damage that left her blind in her right eye.
Habitat: Golden Eagles generally are found in a mountainous areas, canyons, shrubland, and grassland. During the winter they are also found in shrub-steppe vegetation, wetlands, river systems, and estuaries.
Geographic Range: North America, Eurasia, and Northern Africa.
Diet in the Wild: About 20% of their diet is made up of birds and reptiles. They primarily eat mammals, such as rabbits and hares, and larger rodents. They will also occasionally eat carrion.
Diet at CuriOdyssey: Rats, chicks, quail.
Life Span: 20 to 30 years in the Wild. In human care, the longest lived Golden Eagle reached 46 years old.
Conservation Status: No special status. The golden eagle is federally protected under the Bald Eagle Protection Act of 1962. Previous to this act, some 20,000 golden eagles were killed because they were thought to prey on sheep and goats.
