Summer Highlights How to avoid fake tradie scams this Summer Consumer Affairs Victoria wants home owners to avoid getting ripped off by dodgy tradies. Fake tradies continue to target unsuspecting Victorians, knocking on doors, dropping bogus flyers and offering to do maintenance work.

They offer to do jobs such as driveway resurfacing, painting, roof repairs and carpet cleaning at a cheap rate. Often, they will ask for cash up front before starting work and frequently disappear as soon as you pay them. If they do any work, it is often unfinished or of a poor standard.

Consumer Affairs Victoria is working with Public Libraries Victoria to reduce financial losses by building greater awareness and understanding of how scammers operate, and how to spot a fake tradie.

To learn more about the methods fake tradies use to scam you, and how to avoid them, come along to an information session presented by Consumer Affairs Victoria.

The theme for 2018 is Curious Creatures!

No matter where they are during the summer holidays, it is envisioned that children and young people will be able to participate in activities aligned to the annual programming theme, discover great Australian authors and illustrators, and share their voice by engaging in literary and creative activities, both online and in libraries.

The 2018 Summer Reading program: Curious Creatures, will run from Saturday 1 December 2018 to Thursday 31 January 2019.

This is what happens to our hero, one day, when he visits the Butterfly House at the zoo with his class!

Monika is looking forward to introducing this bright and happy book about a topic relevant to young people’s lives. The story is an excellent starting point for parents in discussing feelings of anxiety and shyness with their children.

Introduction to the Craft Cutter

A dedicated creative space, Create, Play, Learn is available at Beaumaris Library.

Come along to explore the technology yourself, or book into one of our guided tutorial sessions, listed below. Technology that is available and free to use includes:

Sandringham Library's Silhouette cutting machine is open for use by the public. All you need to get started is to purchase a cutting mat and attend one of our monthly introduction sessions. The Silhouette Cameo machine can be used to cut paper, vinyl, heat transfers, stickers and so much more! Make your own pop up cards, custom clothing, Christmas and other holiday decorations, vinyl laptop or wall decals, scrapbook pages and paper toys.

• Virtual reality headsets (Oculus Rift/HTC Vive) • Vinyl records to digital converter • Slide photographs to digital converter • VHS tape to digital converter • LEAP motion • Photo printer to print pictures directly off your smart phone (for a small charge).

eLearning and Technology The Library runs a number of training classes on a variety of topics relating to iPhones, iPads, Windows 10 computers and the Library's online resources.

All our iPhone & iPad classes require that your device is using iOS 12 or later, which can be installed on any of these models.

Classes are held in the training room at Brighton Library (14 Wilson Street, Brighton) and in the small hall at Beaumaris Library (96 Reserve Road, Beaumaris).

We will start by discussing the difference between storage on your device vs iCloud storage and the importance of iCloud backup. Do you have questions about using your digital device? Come along to our Device Advice sessions and we will help get you started. Device Advice is an informal, drop-in style session - just bring your device and your questions.

If you need a helping hand to access our library eResources, including eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines, book a 30 minute session with one of our library tech support staff. They can assist with basic information to help download e-books and e-magazines on your iPad, tablet, e-reader or other device.

If you like to talk about books you’ve read and share your ideas with like-minded people, why not come along to a Book Chat. There is no prescribed reading so just enjoy a chat with fellow book lovers and get some tips for your next reading experience.

Are you a passionate cook or an avid cookbook browser? Perhaps you like to read fiction based around a kitchen? Come into Sandringham Library and chat about all things foodie! Browse cooking books, magazines and recount your favourite food experiences and memories. Bring along your favourite tried and tested recipes to share with others. Staff will copy recipes for you.
