MESSAGE
FROM BAY RIDGE
PREP’S FOUNDER & HEAD OF SCHOOL
In 1998, Bay Ridge Prep opened its doors to 35 students in a single classroom. We painted the walls ourselves, filled the space with laughter and possibility, and set out to create a student-centered school where every child is truly seen, heard, and inspired to grow
Twenty-seven years later, our school has expanded in size and scope, but our mission remains unchanged: to cultivate a joyful, inclusive community where students are challenged to think deeply, lead thoughtfully, and become the best version of themselves We believe learning is at its best when students are engaged and can clearly see how their studies connect to the world around them. It flourishes when they have meaningful choices and the freedom to pursue subjects that ignite their curiosity Most of all, it thrives in an environment that builds confidence, encourages risk-taking, and helps students believe in their own abilities
Our teachers are more than educators; they are mentors, coaches, and collaborators. They connect with students, celebrate each learner’s unique strengths, and design experiences that bridge the classroom with the real world. Whether solving a math problem, composing a poem, building a robot, or championing a cause, our students are developing skills that matter most: critical thinking, problem solving, resilience, empathy, purpose, and self-awareness.
For me, this work is personal. I still teach sixth-grade science, coach our middle school baseball team, lead Taekwondo classes, and run alongside students at track practice not out of obligation, but because staying close to the heart of the school means staying close to our students. It’s also the most rewarding part of my day.
Bay Ridge Prep is more than a school. It is a labor of love a place where curiosity is sparked, character is shaped, and young people are prepared to make a meaningful impact in the world
Dr. Charles Fasano, Founder & Head of School

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE SCHOOLWIDE
At Bay Ridge Prep, social-emotional functioning understanding one ’ s emotions and relating meaningfully to others is an essential part of our school culture. Research continues to reveal that social-emotional skills are among the most significant predictors of positive life outcomes.
We nurture these skills in three key ways First, we hire educators who model empathy, trust, and respect, creating safe classrooms where students feel seen and valued Lower Schoolers collaborate on “Classroom Charters” to set community norms and use a “Mood Meter” to check in on their emotions before lessons begin.
Second, we deliver research-based instruction Using the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence’s RULER framework, students learn to Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Regulate emotions Middle Schoolers also engage with The Social Institute’s curriculum to navigate the challenges of a hyperconnected digital world while maintaining human connection, safety, and selfcontrol Psychology-based lessons deepen their understanding of how emotions and relationships work.
Finally, we provide timely, constructive feedback — celebrating progress, guiding reflection, and helping students handle challenges with resilience Upper Schoolers have open communication with trusted adults such as teachers, coaches, and directors, who mentor them beyond academics, offering support in social situations and ensuring school feels like a home away from home
Many families choose Bay Ridge Prep for an education that elevates academics while prioritizing well-being Social-emotional learning is a cornerstone of our curriculum, shaping students who thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

THE LOWER SCHOOL AT BAY RIDGE PREP
“Bay Ridge Prep families appreciate that I know their children well and that they can call on me anytime. Tending to the needs of families is an aspect of my position that I cherish and has contributed to my long tenure at Bay Ridge Prep. My relationships with families create a trust that eases the stressors of modern parenting, teaching, and learning.”
Kate George, Lower School Director
The Lower School at Bay Ridge Prep (Grades K–5) emphasizes student agency through a curriculum built around long-term projects and a culture of self-reflection and empathy. Classroom experiences are developmentally appropriate, intentionally designed to be meaningful and relevant at every stage of a child’s growth. Small class sizes and personalized instruction support the mastery of foundational skills while nurturing confidence, strong work habits, and a sense of self-efficacy.
Research and inquiry are woven throughout the Lower School experience Beginning in kindergarten, students learn age-appropriate interview skills and regularly engage with the wider New York City community through field trips and classroom visits During the Kindergarten Bread Study, for example, children interview local bakery owners to learn about baking and running a business Across the grades, students speak with museum educators, family members, and other experts as part of their long-term projects encouraging them to explore diverse perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

3RD GRADE RAINFOREST PROJECT
The Rainforest Project is a beloved cornerstone of the Lower School experience at Bay Ridge Prep Each year, third grade students embark on a multi-week journey to explore the vibrant ecosystem of the rainforest through the lenses of science, discovery, and creativity Students are challenged to investigate rainforest animals, plants, and geography carefully selecting a species to study in depth They then bring their findings to life through handmade animal models, illustrated maps, and painted storybooks that showcase both their knowledge and artistic voice. The project fosters curiosity, sharpens critical thinking skills, and encourages a personal connection to the environment and the natural world
Students embark on long term projects that involve research and presentation
The grand finale of the project is nothing short of magical With the help of flashlights and imagination, students transform their classroom into a life-sized rainforest tent complete with a magical moss-covered floor, towering green paper trees, and sculptural creatures tucked among the leaves Parents, teachers, and classmates are invited to walk through the dimly lit display, where they learn fun facts like the top speed of a jaguar or the thunderous call of a howler monkey. The celebration continues with a theatrical performance, where students embody the rainforest’s flora and fauna in a student-led play The Rainforest Project is more than a school project it’s an immersive, interdisciplinary showcase of learning, collaboration, and pride 21
From reading workshops to “Family Fridays,” Bay Ridge Prep parents play an active role in their child’s education, both in and out of the classroom. Cultural enrichment is an important part of our curriculum and parents are invited to share their own diverse cultures, including Lunar New Year traditions and more.
FROM BLOCKS TO BOTS, FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS
LEARN HOW TO CODE
Our students explore the exciting world of robotics by assembling their very own TinkRbots Using intuitive, hands-on kits, students built programmable robots and learned the foundations of engineering and coding. Through Tinkerbots Blockly, a blockbased programming platform, they experimented with sequencing, loops, and conditions using a drag-and-drop interface tailored to young learners As they progressed through different learning levels, students were able to integrate sensors that allowed their robots to respond to light, distance, and motion. The project sparked creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking and gave our future engineers a fun, meaningful head start in STEM
Lower school students continue to build on their science skills, which prepare them for this cornerstone physics project in middle school Using limited materials, students are challenged to design and build their own “Balloon Car” to see whose car travels the fastest and the farthest The results of the race are analyzed and students are prompted to reverse engineer what materials and design are best suited for maximum velocity results The project is a popular Bay Ridge Prep tradition that encourages innovative thinking and shows students how fun science can truly be!
LEARNING SPANISH 3X A WEEK
Spanish at Bay Ridge Prep is taught 3 times a week to grades K-8 Our younger students learn the language through singing songs and playing games, such as “Simon Says” and scavenger hunts, during which they are tasked with identifying various words and objects in Spanish This multisensory approach makes learning a new language fun and flexible, so students gain confidence As students advance, Spanish lessons include reading and writing and later evolve into hands-on projects, such as creative writing, plays, and conversational performances, to prepare students with a strong foundation for more immersive Spanish classes that await them in Middle School.
SUZUKI VIOLIN PROGRAM
Bay Ridge Prep uses The Suzuki Violin Method based on the premise that every child is capable of learning the language of music if they are consistently exposed to it from a young age Each child is assigned his or her own violin, sized to fit them, and is immersed in an inspiring musical environment, in which they learn to play by ear rather than sight. By listening intuitively and replaying what they have heard, instead of just reading music, children develop a positive relationship with what can be perceived as a challenging instrument Our program emphasizes collaborative concerts over evaluative auditions, with the goal of making music fun and engaging.
At Bay Ridge Prep, formal chess instruction begins in kindergarten Learning to play chess helps children think rationally, develop patience, improve focus, concentration, and problem solving skills It has also been shown to improve cognitive function, creativity, and memory. Since chess is a solo game, our young students learn how to take calculated risks and to become responsible for the outcome of the game, which in turn builds confidence Once children become competent chess players they participate in tournaments where they can apply the various strategies they have learned
DAILY PHYSICAL EDUCATION, MOVEMENT...AND PLAY!
Statistics show that most students typically spend more than 70% of their day sitting in a classroom, but this does not apply at Bay Ridge Prep, where we make daily movement a priority. The health benefits of physical activity for children range from improved academic performance and brain health to improved physical and mental health Many programs only offer physical education once a week, but our Lower School students take a school bus to local parks and playgrounds every day, weather permitting. When they are not at the playground, you can find them in the gym playing wiffle ball with their classmates, dancing on stage, learning Tae Kwon Do, or taking weekly swimming lessons. Our Lower School students also have the opportunity for regular “movement breaks” during class time

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AT BAY RIDGE PREP
“Middle School is one of the greatest transitional times in a student’s life. The best Middle School educators balance education and inspiration with redirection and a good sense of humor No two days are the same, and we are nimble on our feet!”
Julie Mayring, Ph.D., Middle School Director
Middle school is a pivotal time of growth when students’ brains are rapidly developing and highly impressionable According to Dr Laurence Steinberg, author of Age of Opportunity, it’s a window to offer enriching experiences that shape future well-being and decision-making. At Bay Ridge Prep, we intentionally design our program to meet this moment. Through the RULER approach from Yale, students build emotional intelligence by learning to recognize and manage their emotions. We foster self-esteem by creating an academic environment where students are appropriately challenged and supported to succeed Group work builds collaboration and communication skills, while teacher feedback nurtures both academic and personal growth. Above all, we spark intellectual curiosity encouraging students to explore, question, and deeply engage with their learning.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
NAVIGATING ADOLESCENCE IN A DIGITAL WORLD
Middle School is a transitional time for preteens—academics become more challenging, and their social lives more complex. At Bay Ridge Prep, we make sure students are prepared to navigate this important stage with confidence and support Through Advisory, we directly address topics that matter to them: smartphones, social media, friendships, and social conflicts. As a phone-free school, we intentionally create space for face-to-face interactions, sustained focus, and meaningful connections Lessons from The Social Institute further support this work, helping students build the awareness and skills needed to thrive in today’s digital world
Our approach to technology is thoughtful and deliberate. Laptops are used with clear purpose opened only during specific assignments while teachers use Hapara to manage access and maintain focus. We also introduce artificial intelligence in a safe, structured way through platforms like Flint AI and Khanmigo, which guide thinking without doing the work for students These tools enhance learning while reinforcing critical thinking, self-regulation, and academic independence
We also engage parents in this conversation through interactive community events, such as our recent discussion of The Anxious Generation by NYU Professor Jonathan Haidt Together, we aim to help students become ethical, informed users of technology—while preserving the essential skills that matter most: curiosity, connection, and character
REAL WORLD LESSONS FROM THE SOCIAL INSTITUTE
Once a week, we teach our students various ways to use their phones and social media responsibly, based on the Seven Standards of The Social Institute. Digital technology is a powerful tool that can either be used positively or negatively, and we encourage open discussions on how we can leverage these tools to enhance our lives and develop ourselves as leaders. We dive into real world topics such as “What would you do if....,” “How would you handle this situation?” and “How might this be perceived by others online?” We learn about the importance of inclusivity, sensitivity, and empathy and we prioritize making safe choices when it comes to using social media, posting pictures, or sharing videos online These lessons provide students with a toolkit and various strategies to handle potentially tricky situations as they continue to grow into young adults. It also helps serve as a guide for them on their paths to self discovery

"All three of my children have thrived at Bay Ridge Prep since Kindergarten because it is an exceptionally special place One is in the Upper School now while the other two are off in college
My children so enjoyed going to school there, that my wife and I would sometimes worry that the kids never tell us if they weren’t feeling well, because didn’t want to miss a single day of school W believe me, is a radically different experience than my own schooling "

EDUCATING FOR AN AI POWERED FUTURE
Education is entering a transformative era, shaped by powerful new tools and technological breakthroughs Artificial intelligence (AI) is redefining what students need to learn and how they learn it At Bay Ridge Prep, we embrace this shift with clarity, purpose, and optimism.
While AI raises important questions both in the classroom and at home we see its potential to enhance learning, spark curiosity, and personalize education in ways never before possible We are deliberate about how we use class time, ensuring it is filled with high levels of interaction, discussion, and engagement rather than long stretches in front of screens At home, we recognize that students will use AI, so our assignments are designed to ensure it is used as a tool, not a substitute. This means adapting our work to include more oral presentations, project-based learning, and critical reading, all of which encourage students to think independently and express their own ideas
As tasks become increasingly automated, the human capacities for creativity, connection, and adaptability become more essential than ever. The generic nature of AI’s output can even motivate students to take greater ownership of their work creating with authenticity, originality, and pride in their unique voices
We are committed to preparing students not just to navigate the future, but to shape it As Charles Darwin observed, “Adaptability is the simple secret to survival.” We aim for our students to go further to adapt, innovate, and thrive
At Bay Ridge Prep, our focus on critical thinking, problem solving, and social-emotional growth remains at the core of our mission AI will not replace these values it will sharpen them, guided by thoughtful educators and a mission-driven school community.
