We don’t live in isolation — we need to help students see how we are interconnected across the world and how each of our ways of life and actions impact one another, which, in turn, can help them find better solutions for their future.

THE CHI FAMILY

As Asian Americans who travel extensively, MARGARET JAN and ALEX CHI have cultivated a deeply global perspective — one they’ve been intentional about passing on to their children, WESLEY ’26, DAPHNE ’22 and NOAH. For the Chi family, broadening horizons and understanding different cultures is not just a value, it’s a way of life.

During the pandemic, Margaret found herself needing to be closer to her parents to help with their healthcare. The family began looking for a school that could be a home for their children, who were each coming from single-sex schools in New York City. “They wanted a co-ed environment, and I wanted them to be in a place that reflects the world as it is,” Margaret recalls. Wesley entered Baylor in seventh grade, and Daphne joined as a junior.

What has struck the Chis most about Baylor is the school’s ability to foster independence and self-reliance in a supportive environment. “They give space to allow a child to become who they are supposed to be, which is hard to find in a highly pressurized world,” says Margaret. For Daphne, this meant being prepared to thrive in opportunities beyond Baylor— like her recent summer analyst internship at Goldman Sachs, where she was able to pursue her passions of sports and finance while using and deepening her understanding of culture and diversity.

The Chis have embraced many of Baylor’s programs, from youth in government to the inclusive and vibrant theatre program, to global studies opportunities that expand students’ understanding of the world. “We don’t live in isolation we need to help students see how we are interconnected across the world and how each of our ways of life and actions impact one another, which, in turn, can help them find better solutions for their future,” says Margaret.

That belief inspired the creation of the JAN/CHI FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP to support students in the theatre arts and broaden their exposure to different cultures. “We believe our humanity is held together by storytelling,” Margaret explains. “In an increasingly tech-based world, you don’t want to lose the humanity. To give someone who has the gift of observation and storytelling a path to share their voice in a broader context is a gift to them and to our community.” Alex adds, “Baylor is broadly renowned for its athletic programs. As the parents of student-athletes, we also want this scholarship to recognize the strength of Baylor’s theatre arts, which cultivate creativity, discipline, and critical thinking— the very same qualities that help students excel on the field and beyond.”

For the Chis, philanthropy is both gratitude and investment a way to ensure future Baylor students have the same opportunities for growth, creativity, and connection that Wesley and Daphne have enjoyed. “We have had such a wonderful experience, we want to support the organization in whatever capacity we can to make it even better than it is.”

THE SCEARCE FAMILY

For BECKY AND CAM SCEARCE, giving to The Baylor Fund is a joyful experience and an expression of gratitude spanning generations.

Their Baylor journey began in 1983 when their son BALLARD ’89 enrolled. Their second son, DANIEL ’93, followed. More recently, their five grandchildren — BO ’23, SAYLOR ’25, SAM ’26, WAKE ’28, and CHARLIE ’29 — have continued the Red Raider legacy.

Over the years they have attended too many athletic events to count and have never missed a Baylor Parents’ Day or a Grandparents’ Day. “We’ve seen firsthand the opportunities Baylor gives its students,” said Cam. “Supporting Baylor has been personally meaningful because of the opportunities that are given to our children and grandchildren. And we know our gifts help not just our family, but every child at Baylor,” added Becky.

The couple underscores the importance of giving to The Baylor Fund regardless of the amount. “I don’t think it’s about the size of the gift. There are those who can make very large contributions, and that’s wonderful, but not everyone can do that. If every grandparent would consider even a small gift, it would make a meaningful difference. In the end, every student benefits. We should all adopt a mindset of generosity and a willingness to share our resources with others. For us, giving has become one of the greatest joys we’ve experienced in this stage of life,” said Becky. “We love supporting our kids and grandkids, but we are so thankful that when we do give, it benefits the entire student body,” added Cam.

Reflecting on their connection to Baylor, Becky and Cam say they are thankful for the role the school has played in the lives of their children and grandchildren. “Supporting The Baylor Fund is our way of helping ensure those same opportunities exist for generations to come,” summarized Becky.

BAYLOR SOCCER’S SUMMER ABROAD

Thanks to the generosity of two anonymous donors, the Baylor girls’ soccer and volleyball teams had the opportunity to travel and compete internationally over the summer. On behalf of the athletes and coaches, we are deeply grateful for the financial support that made these transformative experiences possible.

CURTIS BLAIR, Baylor’s Director of Soccer, said team travel to Lisbon, Portugal this summer was a gamechanger for the chemistry of the girls’ soccer team.

“Being in a new environment, navigating airports, sharing meals, and exploring cities while training together brought the players closer in ways that just don’t happen during a regular season. Off the field, they learned to rely on each other, support one another through cultural and language barriers, and celebrate new experiences as a unit,” said Blair.

Although TSSAA rules prevented the team from competing against Portuguese opponents, the 24 varsity players gained the invaluable experience of receiving world-class training from two different professional club academy coaches. “Our players had the privilege of getting coached by SL Benfica (a professional football club based in Lisbon), and FC Porto academy coaches,” explained Blair. “At FC Porto, they wore official training uniforms for each session, which made them feel like they were part of the FC Porto Academy.”

Blair said training at SL Benfica and FC Porto offered contrasting approaches. Benfica emphasized high-intensity, fast-paced sessions that replicate match conditions, with short drills and small-sided games that challenged players physically and mentally, sharpening decision-making and resilience. In contrast, Porto focused on tactical education and individual development, with coaches providing detailed instruction and personalized feedback. Sessions progress from technical drills to complex tactical scenarios, providing a deeper understanding of the game and their role within it. “Both approaches have their merits, and combining elements from each can create a well-rounded training environment that develops both physical sharpness and strategic awareness,” explained Blair.

During the bus tours of Lisbon and Porto, the athletes found themselves tracing powerful connections between sports, history, culture, and language. In Lisbon, the ride wound through the storied districts of Alfama and Belém, where the team learned about Portugal’s Age of Discovery and the resilience of its people. “The bilingual narration offered a glimpse into the importance of language in bridging cultures, especially in international soccer where communication is key. The tour also sparked conversations about how soccer, like history, is shaped by identity and legacy,” said Blair.

From wandering cobblestone alleys and savoring authentic Portuguese cuisine to training with professional coaches, the trip was a collection of unforgettable experiences. “The camaraderie built among teammates, cultural immersion, and the sheer beauty of the surroundings created a journey that will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” said Blair. “Lisbon didn’t just offer a single highlight; it offered a collection of moments that together made the trip truly extraordinary.”

That night reminded us all that sports are a universal language. For our players, it wasn’t just about the game, it was about seeing themselves as part of a global volleyball community.

BAYLOR VOLLEYBALL’S SUMMER ABROAD

Thanks to the generosity of two anonymous donors, the Baylor girls’ soccer and volleyball teams had the opportunity to travel and compete internationally over the summer. On behalf of the athletes and coaches, we are deeply grateful for the financial support that made these transformative experiences possible.

Head Varsity Volleyball Coach SARAH LAIL watched language barriers melt away over pizza in Rome this summer, where a post-scrimmage gathering with an Italian team became one of the squad’s most memorable moments of their trip abroad.

“The two teams were completely intermixed at the tables and what unfolded was something truly special. They started teaching each other tongue twisters in their native languages, exchanged stories, shared photos, and talked about how their volleyball journeys were different in some ways, but very similar in other ways,” said Lail. “That night reminded us all that sports are a universal language. For our players, it wasn’t just about the game, it was about seeing themselves as part of a global volleyball community.”

Competing internationally also pushed Baylor athletes to adapt. “The gyms were much warmer than we’re used to, and were often without air conditioning, so our athletes had to manage their energy and hydration in new ways,” said Lail. “Instructions, cheers, and referee calls sounded different, but that challenge became part of the fun. Despite speaking different languages, both teams shared the same understanding and love for the game. Volleyball became our common language, and it showed through every play, high five, and smile across the net.”

For many players, it was their first trip overseas. Wandering Rome, Pisa, Florence, Bologna, and Venice gave them a chance to soak in ancient architecture and vibrant street life. “Each place had its own story to tell, and our athletes were eager to learn. They were especially moved by St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Duomo in Florence. They had fun tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain, marveling at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and floating through Venice in gondolas,” said Lail. “You could see their sense of wonder and amazement in their faces.”

After days of competing and exploring, the team capped the trip with a beach day in Cinque Terre. They swam, lounged on rocky shores, and even cliff-jumped into the sea. “It was pure joy,” said Lail. “No volleyballs, and no schedules. Just teammates enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime experience together. They laughed, shared dinner overlooking the sparkling water, and, in true team fashion, ended the night sprinting to catch a train, their laughter echoing through the station.”

Baylor has so many wonderful programs that are worthy of support, but I am probably most passionate about supporting teachers and coaches. The importance of their work and the magnitude of responsibility they bear to each individual student and to our society cannot be understated.

GREG ROOP ’09

GREG ROOP ’09 summarizes his motivation for giving to The Baylor Fund in one word: gratitude. “To everyone in the Baylor community, I offer my heartfelt thanks for who you are and for all that you do.”

This year marks the beginning of a new tradition of giving to Baylor for Roop, who earned a B.A. from Harvard, an M.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, and is now an anesthesiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. “I still feel incredibly proud to be a member of the Baylor community, and while my years of contributing to Baylor’s tradition as a student-athlete are long gone, it brings me great joy to support our school by other means.”

At Baylor Roop was president of the National Honor Society and co-captain of the state and national champion swim teams. “My years at Baylor were some of the best of my life. My teachers, coaches, and friends taught me so many lessons including the importance of community, self-discipline, and passion for lifelong learning,” he said.

Roop encourages all Baylor alumni to find ways to give back, no matter the amount of the gift. “Together we can ensure that Baylor continues to provide the highest quality educational experience to its students, and that it continues to attract the best faculty and staff in the country.”

Baylor faculty member and grandparent LINDA COOKE considers her support of The Baylor Fund as a way to honor the impact the school has had on her family while also securing Baylor’s future for other students.

“As a faculty member of the first sixth grade class, I saw firsthand the dedication and care that goes into shaping each student’s experience. My daughter, CHRYSTAL COOKE ’04, was already a student at Baylor, and I was able to watch her grow in confidence, intellect, and character thanks to this community. And now, as a grandparent, I feel a deep sense of gratitude knowing that the next generation in my family is also benefiting from Baylor’s legacy of excellence,” said Cooke, who has served as Director of Student Diversity and Development for over 20 years. “I give because I believe in Baylor’s mission and want to help ensure its impact reaches far beyond today.”

Today, her grandson CAYDEN PHILLIPS ’31 joins his aunt Chrystal and his cousin, COURIYAH STEGALL ’22, in the Baylor family tradition. “Baylor has shaped three generations of my family. Supporting the school financially is my way of saying thank you for all it has given us and ensuring other students have the same opportunities.”

Cooke said philanthropy has always been a shared value in her home. Whether through service or charitable giving, her husband, Charles, has long believed in giving back to the community that nurtured their family. “That mindset has stayed with me,” said Cooke, adding that at Baylor, it means investing in the people and programs that make a daily difference in students’ lives through The Baylor Fund.

Her intention as an unrestricted donor is to empower the people and programs that make Baylor exceptional. “I trust the school’s leadership to direct my gift where it will have the greatest impact, whether that’s faculty development, financial aid, or innovation in the classroom.”

CELEBRATIONS ’25 RAISES OVER $1.7 MILLION

Many thanks to patrons and countless volunteers who attended Celebrations ’25, Baylor’s 13th biennial auction. The event was held in the Field House on March 8, and raised over $1.7 million from sponsorships, raffle sales, class projects, and the live and silent auctions. The net amount raised is divided over two fiscal years (202425 and 2025-26) to The Baylor Fund, with $248,000 from the “paddle raise” dedicated to renovations of the cardio room in the Field House and improvements to Roddy Theater.
