My personal position is in uenced by my (subjective) viewpoint of a politician's performance over their whole term. Not the performace of the party. I believe Andrew Laming has done a good job with regard the Covid virus (eg: regular facebook updates from a medical standpoint) and had helped my covid-effected business.

While I was speaking to him on an unrelated matter, I mentioned that I was doing it tough, due to COVID. Without hesitation he immediately offered to take a 2 page spread to help me out. his words were (and I recall then clearly)"how much do you need, what can I do to help?"

As a representative of his electorate. I can't fault (well a little over the top vs Labor perhaps) Andrew Laming's performance at the moment.

And yes, I AM being paid.

But not to write this but for advertising, his medical and political position on the recent pandemic's effects. This is perfectly respectable.

Does this mean I shall support Henry Pike? No, not at all, I'll listen to him, research thoroughly, and if I like what I hear and discover, shall be happy to accept requests to advertise as I would from almost any candidate.

In summary, I believe Andrew has done a good job with regard the Covid virus and had helped my covid effected business DIGITAL DOTS There is a neat little effect avilable for digital media.

Macleay Island Community Library News WinterKatie Gray, our new Library co­ordinator who began work in February after Meryl Dobe retired, has had little chance to meet our clients because the COVID­19 closed the Library in early March.

Realising how important the library is to the community she implemented a home delivery service. Katie and Sonia Broughton are in attendance and available in the library during the Library Opening Hours to take orders and organise delivery. A number of clients have taken advantage of this service.

The great news is that the library opened for business again on Monday 18 May. The number of clients allowed in at a time will be limited.

With donations continuing to be dropped off, the Librarians are busy sorting and cataloguing. A large number of DVD arrived recently completely filling our shelves.

Our Library now has over 12000 items including fiction and non­fiction books, talking books, CDs, DVDs and magazines for all ages. The Macleay Island History records are also stored for research.

A computer, printer and photocopier are available for public use once the Library re­opens.

Macleay Island, Redland City Council and Queensland Government information and brochures are also on hand.

Macleay Island Library will continue as a pick up d location for items requested on line from the Redlan City Library catalogue. Items can be ordered online l from our computers in our library or the Librarians wil happily assist if asked.

ue's Surpris

By Ann Hagen ing Secrets How does Macleay’s Sue Bishop manage to do it all? There are good reasons but one piece of the puzzle will always be missing.

She combines full time bus driving with the Hydrobath dog wash, puppy classes and a monthly Eumundi fudge stall at Lions Market – working six or seven days a week.

We met for a socially distanced coffee at Redland Bay during Sue’s break from a long day split shift. I discovered a story of a need for speed when athletically young and a need to keep moving thereafter.

She knows everyone wonders how she does it all past her 70th birthday.

“I think motivation and loving doing those things. I just get into it and I can’t bear this I’m old now talk. You will put yourself down the grave. You will go downhill if you start thinking that way.”

“I’m very conscious of health because mum said ‘health is better than wealth.’

“I was always shy as a child but athletic wise I never stopped running, jumping, dancing from very young age but I was painfully shy until 20 probably.”

And that’s a surprise because she’s hailed by maybe 20 people while we’re talking. “The baby’s getting longer legs, how old is he now” she asks a young couple and cheekily calls out “here’s a couple of no hopers” to two other bus drivers who live on the islands.

“You must know at least half of Macleay,” I comment.

“Probably more,” she laughs. “What I love about the buses is the interaction with the public. You can give them a hard time and they give you a hard time. It’s really funny!” The 250 is her favourite route because so many islanders are on it.

“I have a lot of fun getting the bus to the ferry in time. I don’t do anything silly but people laugh and say we’re nearly there it gets them get all excited.”

Sue believes motivation and loving what you do is important. “Buses are the number one love outside my home,” she said. There’s also lots of love for her border collies - she's had this breed since the age of eight and

She keeps them healthy with Supercoat Puppy in smaller quantities because the nutritional mix is good for their fur.

A bus driver since 1992 she came to Brisbane from the country at age 20 with a passion to drive. She started with courier companies and graduated to driving a Yellow Cab and limousines for weekend weddings and the Commonwealth Games, then started driving Clarke’s buses and has worked for Transdev since moving to the island in 2011.

Sue describes a typical day with a split shift. She wakes at 4am, has toast and eggs for breakfast and catches the 5.03am ferry. She drives to Capalaba, signs on at the depot and does mandatory checks of the assigned bus.

She starts driving around 6.40 on a school run with children collected from around 7.15. She’s back to the depot by 9am and has free time until 2pm when she starts another school run then she heads into town to drive the 281 peak service to the marina.

The shift nishes back at the depot at 6.30 which means she could return to the marina in time to catch the 7.15pm ferry but prefers to go for a walk and catch the 8.10pm to Macleay. “I’m happy and relaxed on a direct run and I’ve got friends who get on it.”

Some other days are shorter shifts but they’re still early starts and Sue is bus driving every second or third Sunday.

Dr. Nelum Perera MBBS, DCH-PAEDIATRICS, MD-PAEDIATRICS NEUROLOGY Dr Nelum Perera graduated from one of the leading medical faculty in Sri Lanka (University of Peradeniya) in 2005. Since thenm she has been practising medicine for more than 14 years as a clinician and a GP. In the beginning she mainly worked in the paediatric eld and completed her specialist training and obtained her High Diploma (2009) and MD in paediatric (2012).

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE Exercise is clearly key to Sue’s tness. She walks about an hour each day. She also goes to the gym for the treadmills, weights and Pilates classes and hopes it will reopn soon.

Diet? Toast and eggs for breakfast .

Lots of salad usually a chicken or tuna salad and a sandwich so she doesn’t have to get home at night and eat a large meal “which is ridiculous at 8.30. My salad’s pretty big so you just graze. A big meal at night would be terrible you’d get indigestion from it.”

Weekends she might splurge a bit with ice cream or a small piece of Eumundi fudge.

Vices?” I love alcohol but if I’m working Sunday I can only have a few glasses Friday night and if I’m not working Sunday I can have a couple on Friday night and a couple on Saturday, that’s about all I do. If you’re driving a bus you’ve got to be zero drug and alcohol.”

She’s never smoked apart from one puff at 17.

Sue seems blessed with good health and excellent

genes but there’s no way of knowing how dynamic her forbears were because she was adopted at ve days old.

“I was told I come from pretty t and healthy parents. My natural mother was married and I don’t know what went on.

All I know is they had to give me up and I’ll never know the reason.

“I was told very young I was very specially chosen.

They’ve got to tell you when you’re very young – you’re special.”

And Sue Bishop certainly is just that – special.

She the received her paediatric neurology specialist training and worked as a fellow at Lady Ridgeway Hospital Sri Lanka, Kings College Hospital in London and Lady Cilento Hospital in QLD.Upon completion of her training in 2017, Dr Perera commenced work at the Greenslopes Provate Hospital and gained work experience in a variety of specialties including general medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, gastroenterology, paediatrics, endocrinology, rural medicine and psychiatry, this enhanced the smooth transition to general practivr in Australia.

Dr Nelum enjoys seeing patients from all walks of life for general medical care, with particular interest in womens's health antenatal care, child health, neurology and mental health.

So often we hear people who are unhappy with the Redland City Council exclaim “we should go back to being under the Gold Coast”, but we were never part of that City. So let us go back to the distant past and unpick the puzzle.

Letters patent (always in the plural) are a type of legal instrument in the form of a published written order issued by a monarch, president, or other head of state, generally granting an office, right, monopoly, title, or status to a person or corporation. Letters patent can be used for the creation of corporations or government offices, or for the granting of city status or a coat of arms. Letters patent are issued for the appointment of representatives of the Crown, such as governors and governors­general of Commonwealth realms, as well as appointing a Royal Commission.*

The State Government handed over the islands of Macleay, Lamb, Karragarra and Russell to the Redland Shire Council on 12th May 1973. At no stage were we ever part of the Gold Coast, or even the Albert Shire just across the way.

The name “Southern Moreton Bay Islands” is where confusion abounds. Older residents remember the islands as being the RKLM Group and this nomenclature is still with us in records of the islands history.

In February 2003 the name “Southern Moreton Bay Islands” was gazetted by the Government and referred not to us, but to a series of uninhabited islands in Gold Coast City, including parts of the SMBI National Park.

The description of what the drilling people said to me was that they drilled some 450 metres under the sea bed from Lamb Island to Macleay island to a pre marked exit point which they hit the targeted point with a 300 ml variable fantastic achievement. When drilling across the Lucas Passage at the end of Cressy Street the drill was at a depth of 31 meters. While I was checking my facebook ­ I had a brainwave! Here, right in front of me was an important, well written article, with no spelling mistakes to boot! And thus was born "The Facebook Files" Thanks to Anna Lineth and Greg Hartay­Szabo, and all facebook readers.

I have had a few requests for a 'Letters to the Editor' section because nobody else provides space for one. So send me emails, I'll see what I can do.

My parents moved to Macleay in 1956.

Dad was a sawmiller, farmer, Golden Fleece agent, house builder, road grader and occasional fisherman and crabber. Grandad liked it there so bought land too and farmed for a time. We lived an idyllic life eating from our farm produce or bartering with neighbours and swapping with their fruit and veg. We had chickens, sheep, pigs, geese. Fish and crabs were plentiful. For other needs, Lovells store at Redland Bay would send groceries over on the ferry. There used to be wild horses until the early 60s, but they were damaging farms so one of the other farmers shot them all. Dad sold up about 1970­71 and we moved away, but as we still had blocks and a house there, Dad and Mum and a couple of us kids holidayed there twice yearly until the 80s. Then it became too much for Dad so all was sold, even the blocks we the kids had. I got $800 for my waterfront block! I've never lost touch with Macleay and have holidayed there with my family yearly ever since so have seen much change, the highs, the lows and the great mix of people there. Many memories of what was and what you see now. our property started at the big mango tree on corner of Hamilton Parade. It used to be called Kerr's corner. Our first house was the old double storey place in Charles Terrace (named after my grandfather on Mum's side).

The old house on right 50m up from mango tree was grandfather's place. Locals after we left called it custard house as it got painted that colour. Dad gave us waterfront blocks down Charles terrace north to the swamp, not high land, but quick access to the yabby patch with good fishing and crabbing straight out front.

The wild horses were a mix of colours, leader being a big white stallion, but no idea where they came from.

Probably let go by earlier settlers? ...or put there involving Peel Island Leper colony was one rumour. my first memory as a 2yr old in 1956 was wandering amongst the mangroves at high tide and being enthralled by the myriad of baby fish swimming in little schools, many brightly coloured. Next is going fishing with Dad out front of our place. Google maps has it as 56 ?? Charles Terrace. It was dusk and Dad was catching whiting one after the other. He gave me his rod to hold, a trout reel and rod with normal fishing line on it.

I wound in a big whiting and from then on I was hooked.

My brother and I fished nearly everyday for next 15 years. I remember the black swans too, many of them out front of mangroves at high tide, especially the scary DOTS Winter 2020 edition page 34

headless ones (so Dad said). Catching yabbies was always a fun job walking there in oozing deep mud.

Didn't take long to fill our bait tin when we were getting up to a dozen yabbies per pump. There was always heaps of yabbies at our yabby bank until the night pumpers came through and illegally used motor vacuum pumps to decimate their numbers. Fishing was for seasonal runs of different species, Winter for flathead and bream, followed by tailor and tarwine, then Summer for big whiting and a mix of bream and flathead always.

Sole occasionally, Gummy sharks yes, good for crabpot bait. Sweetlip, cod and parrot in certain places. Even got a small sawfish off our jetty, which we let go of course.

Stingrays, well very rarely not like these days. memories are flooding back. In 1956 Dad bought a 14 acre working banana farm, mainly cavendish, later Lady Fingers when Panama disease became a problem.

Whom Dad bought farm off is not known to me. The McKenzie's lived on the property in an old double storey house situated behind where 26 Vine Street house is now and worked the farm selling the bananas and pocketing the money. Dad had a run in with them saying it was his farm now and the bananas were his property.

That is a child's memory of the situation, but Mum says that Dad was not very popular. The house the McKenzie's lived in burnt down not long after Dad took over the property. The roads were just dirt tracks, funnily enough today's roads basically follow the same route, although 90% of today's roads are new from about 1965ish when the main landers discovered the islands and media advertised our paradise and real estate developers started offering money to buy our farms. I think it was Pal and O'shea who made Dad an offer too good to refuse. I needed a mainland job as would my younger brother soon too so seemed like a good opportunity to sell up and move to mainland I suppose was Dad's thinking. That was a very sad time for us kids as losing our Macleay playground and waterways was a daunting prospect. No more swinging through the trees, fishing and crabbing or exploring for us older boys. More on that later.

Russell Island Progress Association - RIPA (Incorporation pending) "Promoting a Progress Association for Russell Island" Email: email2ripa@gmail.com RUSSELL ISLAND PROGRESS ASSOCIATION - also known as "RIPA", is pleased to announce that it is up and running on Russell Island.

Forming a Progress Association on Russell Island was discussed in late 2019 and RIPA was officially formed in February 2020.

RIPA currently has 35 local Russell Island resident members covering a broad range of careers, occupations and situations in life.

2. Set up a "Containers-4-Change" collection project returning recyclables to the Running Wild operated transfer station on Russell Island.

3. Made submissions to RCC re: suspending Parking Regulations at Weinam Creek during Covid-19 restrictions.

The Objectives of RIPA are to promote the progress, development and promotion of Russell Island and to act as a voice for the local community and to advocate with The Redland City Council and the other levels of government.

4. Made submissions to both RCC and State reconstruction of covered bus-stops on the Blue school bus route on Russell Island.

2. To go about its business with a positive and constructive outlook and intent, and to avoid becoming bogged-down in un-necessary criticism and/or negativity.

RIPA is also in touch with RCC re: the forthcoming public consultation process about the Bay Islands Aquatic Centre following the council decision to do that in February this year.
