A message from Duncan Mills, Executive Headteacher We have come to the end of the term and the whole school community deserve a well-earned rest. I am delighted to report that we are making good progress along our journey to becoming the school of choice on the island. We welcomed a team from Hampshire County Council into school for two days during the first week of October. The team were looking at progress the school has made in the last year. I am pleased to say that the team said that of all of the schools that they have seen over the years, they have never seen such a shift in culture in one year that permeates through each element of the school. They said that the school has a great feel, is a nice place to be and in every class visited students were on task and engaged in their learning. We know that there is still work to do to get this school to be the very best it can be, and the whole staff body is working incredibly hard to make rapid progress. Thank you to parents and carers for your support in driving our school forward. I am sure that students, parents and carers would like to join me in thanking all of the staff and governors at The Bay CE School for their continued hard work and commitment to the students of the all-through school. Enjoy the mince pies, the Christmas cake and best of all family time. See you in January 2020. Mr D Mills Executive Headteacher

A message from Teresa Westcott-Hayes, Head of School Dear Parents and Carers, We have come to the end of what has been a very difficult few weeks following the implementation by our Prime Minister of the new strict measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. In our school community, everyone is giving their all and is doing their utmost to respond in the best way possible to the demands that the new measures have brought. Despite being out of our comfort zone it has been so heartening to see staff, students and parents coming together to innovate, adapt, and respond to these changing circumstances. I wish Year 11 students every success for their future. We were sad that their time in school at The Bay ended in the way that it did. However, we look forward to seeing them next academic year for a special celebration event. We are still here for all students, including Year 11’s so please do get in touch if you need any support. You will see from this edition of our Inspire magazine that we have so much to be proud of as a school and we will look forward to returning as soon as we can, providing education and enrichment opportunities for students. The student leadership team did an incredible job organising Sport Relief Week, it was fantastic to see so many students taking part in all of the sporting activities. World Book Day was a great success with Year 7 and 8 students thoroughly enjoying Adisa’s visit. You can read more about the brilliant trip to New York in this magazine along with the many successes of our students throughout the spring term. Thank you for your support. Best Wishes Mrs Westcott-Hayes Head of School

Students enjoy trip of a lifetime to New York City 38 students from Year 10 had a fantastic trip to New York during February half term. The aim was to take students beyond the classroom, to inspire them and give them an unforgettable learning experience. Students enjoyed experiencing life in one of the most populated cities in the world and visited many historical monuments and buildings. The trip began with a visit to Times Square where they ate dinner at Hard Rock Cafe. During the rest of the exciting trip they visited Central Park Zoo, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, 9/11 Museum, Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Central Station. They also went on a sightseeing bus tour.

“In New York we saw amazing sights and witnessed amazing things. Times Square was the best part because the buildings were huge and were higher than we had seen before. From The top of the Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building we could see for miles looking out across the whole city. There were lights everywhere and it was never quiet. From the moment we got up to when we went to bed we were always doing something new and exciting. We went to the Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty and The Brooklyn Bridge. Everything was great from the shops to the skylines. The restaurants had amazing entertainment and food. There was never a dull moment. Everyone had an amazing time. If I had the opportunity to go back to New York and do it all again I would.”

Josh Sunnocks

“My favourite part of the trip was the visit to the Empire State Building at night time, it was beautiful to see the city from above.” Chelsea “I really enjoyed visiting all of the different sights, particularly the Empire State Building and Rockafella Centre.” Tru

“This was a trip of a lifetime which students will never forget. They really embraced seeing all of the sights of the Big Apple, taking it all in and soaking up the culture. Some of the students on the trip had never been on an aeroplane before so it was fantastic for them to experience a new city on the other side of the Atlantic.” Mr Allen, Trip Leader

Sport Relief Week The Student Leadership Team worked incredibly hard to organise and run an action packed Sports Relief fundraising week from 9th-13th March. The Year 11 team organised a whole host of sporting activities for both students and staff, aiming to encourage sporting participation and also raise money for Sport Relief. Activities included tennis, badminton, table tennis, rowing, board games and rugby. Over 400 exercise slots were taken over the week. Staff and students kick -started each day with popular early morning exercise sessions in Zumba, Body Balance and the infamous ‘Bootcamp’ workout, led by Fitness Professionals from TJs Exercise Studio in Lake.

Green House Community Day Sport Relief week culminated with Green House Community Day which was a non-uniform day for students. The money raised was shared between Rugby against Cancer and Sport Relief. A rugby skills session and match was held at lunch time, led by Guest coach and player Aaron Beesley of England’s National Deaf Rugby Squad. To mark the event of a school many students competed in the Con Sullivan Triathlon, an event in memory of a former student who tragically died in a cycling accident in 2013. Particularly poignant was the presentation by Marianne Sullivan, Con’s mother and former teacher at the school. She praised all competitors, regardless of their finishing position, for their courage in competing and finishing such a challenge, before presenting to overall winners Ethan Walters (Boys) and Rachael Debenham (Girls). Key stage 3 winners were Owen Clarke and Grace King. The total amount raised for Sport Relief and Rugby Against Cancer is £824.59 (this is set to increase once the Silent raffle has been done). Thank you so much to the following local businesses for their support with prizes: Isle of Wight Zoo, Isle of Wight Pearl, Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Garlic Farm, Tapnell Farm and Tackt-Isle Adventures Thank you to Darcey Mitchell (Year 10) for taking all of the photographs during Sports Relief Week.

“It was a fantastic week with so many buying into the event and getting involved in all activities, whether it be before school, at lunchtime or after school. It was capped off by the triathlon, which was a great celebration of sporting talent and enthusiasm for sport at the school throughout all of the year groups. On behalf of the school I would like to thank all of the fantastic instructors from TJs Exercise Studio who helped to make the week so memorable.” Ethan Walters (Year 11), Sports Ambassador

Noel Turner Science Festival On Thursday 6th and Friday 7th of February 2020, three Year 8 students; Blake Poerscout-Edgerton, Callum ChurchesWingrove and Dexter Cotton were chosen as the three volunteers representing The Bay C of E School to help at The Noël Turner Science Festival, held at Cowes Enterprise College. Blake, Callum and Dexter helped in the K-nex STEM Bridge challenge room. Throughout the two day festival they supported and guided hundreds of both primary and secondary students. The challenge set to visitors was to build a bridge with K’nex to link the Isle of Wight to the mainland. The children who participated had to learn and execute their construction and use debating skills to answer the questions and create their own unique bridges. The three boys gave advice and guidance throughout both days on how each of the groups could construct and reinforce their bridge. Dexter, Blake and Callum also had the chance to attempt the challenge as well as the participants who visited their workshop. . They also had a chance to look around the festival and experience all the different wonders of science. Feedback from the people running the Festival was that the boys were excellent ambassadors for The Bay CE School and were key in ensuring the challenge ran smoothly.

“We had fun assisting the students and learning new things such as creating a double drawbridge from K’nex.”

Blake, Dexter and Callum

Year 5 students also attended the Festival. It had many different companies, organisations, scientists and engineers who brought to life science in everyday life. The children watched a show about different gases and spent time with different engineers who described what work they do, they found it really inspiring and who knows? Some children may now consider a career in science or engineering.

World Book Day Students in Years 7 and 8 attended an exciting, funny and entertaining performance by poet, Adisa – the Verbalizer as part of World Book Day. In 2003, Adisa landed first place in the national New Performance Poet of the Year competition, that same year, he was honoured as the Hackney Poet Laureate. Adisa showcased some of his poetry to students in a performance in the lecture theatre. During the interactive session he got students to ask him questions and answered the question through poetry. The lecture theatre was full of laughter as the students were thoroughly entertained and engaged. Adisa also led a series of workshops for students. With his guidance, tips and support they wrote their own poems about ‘home.’ Students on the primary site dressed up as characters from their favourite books and also attended a Scholastic Book Fair. The whole of the primary site have been studying the picture book ‘Tuesday’ by David Wiesner. The strange mystery of flying frogs the book really got the students questioning each other.

“Adisa really knew how to relate to us, what we were interested in and made the poetry relevant.” Alesia

Sports Update Our primary sports teams have had a successful Spring term. We are extremely impressed with the enthusiasm, determination and hard work students have put in to extra-curricular activities, and it has paid off. Here are just a few of the highlights from this term: •

Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in a basketball competition; it was a tough afternoon with some great basketball skills on display from all schools. After some close games they finished third in their group. They played some great games and proudly represented the school.

The U11 girls football team faced Newchurch in their league quarterfinal having finished first in their tough qualifying group. They played really well and the match finished 1-0, ensuring the Bay were through to the semi-final.

The U11 girls football team played Queensgate in the semi-final, the girls produced another confident and spirited performance. The girls went from strength to strength, winning the game. The U11 team were unbeaten all season!

The U10 boys football team reached the final of the cup as well after beating current champions Lanesend.

The girls U9 football team played Gurnard, they were absolutely brilliant and kept working together and supporting each other for the whole game. Unfortunately the game finished 5-2 to Gurnard.

Three primary athletes (Evie, Callum and Isaac) went over to the Hampshire Schools Cross-Country Championships in Basingstoke to represent the Isle of Wight. Isaac and Callum faced a really tough field and finished in 95th and 71st places respectively. This was amazing as Callum has spent time out injured this year and Isaac is almost 2 years younger than most of the other athletes. Evie was the first Isle of Wight girl home in a time of 8 minutes 54 seconds, only 55 seconds slower than first place. Well done to all of you.

We also had several friendly football games so that we could let as many children as possible have the opportunity to play in a competitive game and to help prepare them for our 2020/2021 Football season. Year 2/3/4/5/6 all played friendly games.

We were announced as finalists again for the Sports Foundation Isle of Wight Sports Achievements Awards - Sporting Primary School Award. The awards evening has been postponed until Thursday 17th September 2020.

Wight Brainy Bunch Cheque Presentation Kathryn Grimes from The Wight Brainy Bunch visited The Bay CE School on Friday 28th February to collect a cheque for £1513.66 raised for the charity on Blue House Community Day. Blue House Community Day took place on Friday 13th December. Students in Blue House chose to fundraise for ‘The Wight Brainy Bunch.’ The charity provides support and financial assistance to Isle of Wight families who have a loved one suffering from a brain tumour. This is a charity very close to the hearts of students and staff as one of the Year 10 students is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour. The Blue House student council worked tirelessly to plan the day. There was a non uniform day, Christmas cookie bake-off and sale, a huge raffle and Christmas Fayre stalls. The day ended with over 100 students and staff taking part in Blue House Quiz.

Omar inspires Year 10 students On Monday 27th January we were lucky to have a visit from Omar Sharif. Omar uses his inspirational story and life experiences to coach and empower others to do as he did and become a better version of themselves. 28 year old Omar grew up in central London and by the age of 14, was involved in gang activity, where three of his friends died as a consequence of knife crime. With the help from The Prince’s Trust Omar moved to Coventry and found a job. He now runs his own personal training business ‘Omar Inspires.’ He gave Year 10 students an inspirational talk about how young people can be the change they want to see in the world. He also shared his passion for detering youngsters from following the same destructive path he once did. Omar recently met with His Royal Highness Prince Charles by Royal Invitation to be congratulated for the positive work he does in schools and colleges and the difficulties he has overcome in his life. More importantly, His Royal Highness wanted to recognise the continuous work Omar does for The Prince’s Trust as an ambassador and for the way he has turned his life around. Omar’s story has become a popular trend on the internet and has been featured both on a number of national TV channels as well as Newspapers. His work on the island is part of a police initiative to reduce violent crime.

Sport Sessions for Year 6’s Year 6 pupils spent three treat sessions at the secondary site. Each class spent the afternoon having a go at one of three activities, either Trampolining, Climbing and Bouldering, or Badminton. This was not only a treat for their hard work in preparation for the SATS but also an opportunity to make themselves familiar with the site and the teachers they will have in Year 7.

Science In the Bioenergetics module in Year 10 Biology, students engaged in some origami. They examined the site of respiration by making Mitochondria as 3d models. In the lesson, the students learned that mitochondria are organelles inside plant and animal cells that convert Glucose into carbon dioxide, water and energy. In humans, this process is called Glycolysis and ensures that we have energy in a usable form for our bodies to function properly . Dr King was really impressed with the work the students did, following the lesson, photographs of their models were put in their books with extension work required to label and annotate their photographs detailing the specific areas of the mitochondria.

Over the last few weeks, a lot of hands on and creative science has been happening across our different year groups. Some groups in Year 7 have been learning about light and how we can see, which has meant for dissecting cows eyes to help identify the parts of an eye. As you can see from the photographs, our students where keen to engage in the task and appear to be having a lot of fun identifying the lens and vitreous humour, whilst taking care with themselves and the equipment they were using. Year 9 have been looking at the structure and bonding of elements and compounds and have been making 3D models from sweets and cocktail stick to show how different ionic compounds form into different shape crystals because of the number of bonds they form. Year 10 have been making models of mitochondria, organelles within cells.

Year 7 students celebrate graduating ‘The Bay Accelerated Learning Programme’ A selection of Year 7 students have been celebrating after graduating from the ‘Accelerated Learning’ programme. The 10 week programme focuses on providing additional support to students in English or Maths. During the sessions they completed activities in small groups that will assist them in their daily lessons. On Thursday 13th February they attended a celebration event to congratulate them for the improvements they have made. They had cakes, popcorn and crisps and watched a film. They also received certificates.

“I have learnt so much, especially about tenses and phrases. This has given me confidence in my English lessons and I feel like I will do much better now thanks to the support I have received.”

Their presentation was amazing and they all tasted absolutely fantastic!” Miss Maddocks

Standing Together for Peace Day On Holocaust Memorial Day, the primary site held a ‘Standing Together for Peace’ Day. The children took part in a 75 candle art project to mark the 75 years since the liberation of the Jewish people in Auschwitz. One large candle was created with all the children’s fingerprints. Each child created a single flame and 75 were chosen to make a display. Pupils discussed what it means to ‘stand together’ and talked about how living in peace can have a positive impact upon themselves, their community and the wider world. They spoke about our school values and what it means to have respect and tolerance. Throughout the day the children made a variety of exciting art projects related to peace such as peace poles, windmills, doves, sunflower paintings, footprints and pebbles. The Holocaust Memorial Prayer was also shared. Key Stage 1 and Year 3 focused on peace and standing together and Years 4 and 5 studied Anne Frank. Year 6 learnt about Irena Sandler, a Polish social worker who rescued Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghettos. By holding a Standing Together for Peace Day, the children discovered they are part of a larger group of people who came together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future where people are more tolerant and respectful of others.

Year 1 visit to Carisbrooke Castle On Friday 13th March, Year 1 visited Carisbrooke Castle. When they arrived, Estelle (the Education Officer) met them at the gate. She took them to the education room and told them the story of Sleeping Beauty, using lots of different props. Estelle used Carisbrooke Castle as the setting for her story, so the children also learnt lots of interesting facts about castles. At the end of the session, she gave the group the opportunity to explore the props and toys that she had used. The children then had the opportunity to explore the castle. They particularly enjoyed seeing the donkeys have their food and asking questions to the volunteers who worked with them. They explored Princess Beatrice’s Garden and found Isabella’s window and the oven in the wall. There was just time to look inside the chapel before they met back at the education room for lunch. In the afternoon, the group explored the castle museum. They found a beautiful doll’s house on the top floor and a fantastic view of the keep out of the window. They also found an organ that was a birthday present for Princess Beatrice. On the way back to school, the children were all talking about how much they had enjoyed the trip. They behaved beautifully and are already planning their next outing.

Maths Feast Congratulations to the Year 10 students who took part in the Maths Feast this term. We welcomed students from secondary schools across the island to host the event. The event is run by the Advanced Mathematical Support Programme and tests mathematical skills, teamwork and communication skills. Our teams were awarded certificates for teamwork and participation.

Dance Live On Tuesday 11th February the Bay Primary team of 63 children and 18 adults took part in the Dance Live event at the Portsmouth Guildhall. The team worked incredibly hard preparing for the event since September with rehearsals, costume and prop making. Their story was themed on Robin Hood with Sherry Taylor and Ruby Brookes taking the lead as the outlaws direct descendants, robbing the rich to give to the poor. The children were amazing on stage. Their performance was dazzling, supported by Connor Banks and Jamie Cooke as the lighting team and a great Year 5 and 6 stage crew. Everyone had a fantastic day. The team continues their hard work preparing for the Sandown carnivals, Hulaballoo and other community events that will showcase their talents.

Year 5 Traffic and Beach Survey This term Year 5 pupils went out to survey they number of cars that were being used by a driver only during a period of time on The Broadway. Our eco-warriors then surveyed they amount of plastic pollution within 5 square meters of the beach that they could find. We were all shocked at the findings and discussed what we could all do to make a better future for our environment.

Macbeth Live Screening In March, The Royal Shakespeare Company put on a live screening of Macbeth for schools around the Country. Our Year 10 students were lucky to watch the live screening, followed by a question and answer session with some of the actors. All students in Year 10 are studying Macbeth so this screening was relevant and informative for them.

Year 7 and 8 students are enrolled on Accelerated Reader, a reading programme designed to encourage reading for pleasure. Students take regular Star Reading Tests to establish their Reading Range, which is used to guide book choice. Students take quizzes on the books they have read to check their understanding. Each time they pass a quiz, the number of words in each book is added to their individual Word Count. There are many rewards for aiming high during Accelerated Reader lessons.
