La Porte High School commencement to be held May 26 in Bulldog Stadium La Porte High School’s Class of 2017 will graduate at 7 p.m. Friday, May 26, at Bulldog Stadium. The time change for the commencement, which has been held at 8 p.m. in previous years, allows for a possible solution should inclement weather affect the area that evening. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. According to principal Todd Schoppe, in the event of bad weather on May 26, a decision will be made by 3 p.m. to decide among three solutions in the Inclement Weather Plan. The change in the start time would allow the district to postpone the ceremony until 8 p.m., if needed, depending on the weather forecasts and severity of approaching weather. A second option would be to relocate the LPHS graduation ceremony to the main gym for the 7 p.m. ceremony. Third, the ceremony would be postponed until Saturday, May 27, at 9 a.m. at Bulldog Stadium, with gates opening at 7:30 a.m. If the weather requires La Porte High School to hold commencement in the main gym, students will receive two tickets at graduation practice on May 26 to be used by their parents or relatives to attend the ceremony. Only ticket holders will be admitted into the gym when the gates open at 6 p.m. Students also would receive two additional tickets, both stamped “Student Center” or “Sonja Angelo Theater,” for two additional relatives to watch the ceremony on campus via live video stream. Regardless of the weather, family and friends who are unable to attend the ceremony are encouraged to view the ceremony on the district’s website, www.lpisd. org.
Should a change in plans for the graduation ceremony be necessary, students and their families will be notified through automated phone messages, phone calls to graduating students, the district website, and push notifications through the new La Porte ISD mobile app, available for iPhone and Android devices, available at the Apple and Google Play stores. Because parking is limited on the LPHS campus due to construction, shuttle buses will be provided from 5:15 p.m. to the start of the ceremony at 7 p.m. and will return attendees to their cars following the ceremony. Shuttle buses will pick up and drop off guests at the following locations: • La Porte Elementary School, 725 S. Broadway St. • La Porte Junior High School, 401 S. Broadway St. • First Baptist Church, 310 S. Broadway St. • La Porte ISD Special Programs Center (old Neighborhood Center), 526 San Jacinto St. • Evelyn Kennedy Center, 618 San Jacinto St. • Sylvan Beach parking lot (by skateboard facility) • Former Kroger parking lot next to Walgreens (Auto Zone) Shuttle buses will pick up at these locations and drop off at the north stadium parking lot across from the LPHS baseball field. Following the ceremony, shuttle buses will pick up guests at the north stadium parking lot and drop them off at the parking locations.

In the only opposed election for a seat on the La Porte ISD Board of Trustees, incumbent Kathy Green won her Position 2 seat against fellow incumbent Phillip Hoot in the May 6 General Election. Green received 904 votes to Hoot’s 626. Incumbent Lois Rogerson, who ran unopposed, received 1,128 votes in her bid for Position 1 on the Board. Dennis Slate, who received 1,181 votes, was also unopposed for the Position 3 seat, which was previously held by Hoot. All results are unofficial until the elections are canvassed.
La Porte ISD introduces new smart phone app for parents, citizens
Want to know what’s going on in La Porte ISD? Head to Apple’s App Store (iPhone*) or Google Play (Android) and download our newest interactive communications tool. The app design is a collaboration between the district’s Communications Department and Edlio, Inc., the company that hosts La Porte ISD’s home on the internet. It is free to download and use. Whether the user is seeking information on school events or desiring to make contact with someone in the district, it’s all available through the app. In fact, everything at lpisd.org is accessible through the app with just a tap, or two. As a bonus, users who enable push notifications will be among the first to know the news coming out of La Porte ISD. Prekindergarten registration at three campuses continues through June 2 Registration and qualification for the 2017-18 La Porte ISD prekindergarten program continues through June 2 at Bayshore Elementary (800 McCabe Rd.), College Park Elementary (4315 Luella, Deer Park) and La Porte Elementary (725 S. Broadway) schools between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays.
The following documents are required for registration: • Child’s Birth Certificate (proof of age required – must be 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2017) • Child’s Social Security Card • Immunization Records • Proof of residency (current utility bill – i.e. water or electric) • Guardian’s Texas Driver’s License or Texas I.D. To be eligible for pre-K, students must live in La Porte ISD, be four years old by Sept. 1, 2017, and meet one of several other criteria. These criteria include being educationally disadvantaged, unable to speak and comprehend English, homeless, the child of an active duty member of the armed forces of the United States or one who was injured or killed while on active duty, or having been in the conservatorship (foster care) of the Department of Family and Protective Services following an adversary hearing. The 13th Annual La Porte Education Foundation Golf Tournament held on on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, raised more than $41,000. The money will be used to fund innovative, creative instructional projects that benefit the students and teachers of the La Porte Independent School District. The Presenting Sponsor for this year’s tournament was the City of La Porte. A total of 172 players from 43 teams took part in the tournament held at the Bay Forest Golf Course. Winners for the morning flight were Bayshore Financial Advisors, Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union, Texas First Bank, Albemarle, Puffer-Sweiven, and Mr. Electric. Winners for the afternoon flight were Zachry, INEOS Olefins & Polymers USA, Kuraray America, Inc., Noltex, LLC, La Porte Tire Center, and Gas Innovations. Kindergarten registration for 2017-18 continues through May 19 La Porte ISD kindergarten registration for the 2017-18 school year continues through May 19. Parents or guardians may register their children from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. Children who will be five-years-old on or before Sept. 1 are eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year and should be enrolled by a parent or legal guardian in the office of the elementary school to which their family is zoned. Each elementary school also will host an evening orientation and registration. In addition to receiving important information, parents and children will have the opportunity to tour the school building and meet the principal, kindergarten teachers and office staff. School spirit items also will be available for sale.

Bulldog baseball advances to area UIL playoffs beginning May 11
The La Porte High School Bulldogs will advance to the area round of the state baseball playoffs this week after earning a hard-fought victory over Atascocita High School in a three-game series this past weekend. The Bulldogs will now face state-ranked George Ranch High School in the area round. The first game will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at San Jacinto College North, 5800 Uvalde Road in Houston, followed by a 7:30 p.m. game Friday, May 12, at Pearland Dawson High School, 2050 Cullen Blvd. in Pearland. If Game 3 is needed, it will be played Saturday, May 13, at 1 p.m. at Dawson.
