Jennie Reid Elementary nominated as National Blue Ribbon School

La Porte ISD’s Jennie Reid Elementary School is one of 26 schools from across the state nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2017. Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath nominated the campus for this honor and made the announcement Jan. 12. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards. Each year, the U.S. Department of Education seeks out and celebrates outstanding American schools that demonstrate that all students can achieve at high levels. Patricia Herrera-Johnson, principal at Jennie Reid Elementary from 2011 to 2016, and Tami King, assistant principal during that time period, were on hand to share the news with Jennie Reid students and staff following the Commissioner’s announcement. Herrera-Johnson and King are now principal and assistant principal, respectively, at Lomax Elementary School. Angela Garza-Viator is the current principal of Jennie Reid Elementary, with Lisa Basile the assistant principal. Superintendent of Schools Lloyd W. Graham explained the importance of the nomination, noting that the school was selected for this honor from over 8,300 campuses in the state. “Every year, the Texas Commissioner of Education has the opportunity to nominate what he considers the highest performing schools in the state for the prestigious distinction of National Blue Ribbon School,” Graham said. “The success of Jennie Reid Elementary School is the direct result of the continued dedication and commitment of past and present students, their families, faculty members, support
staff and campus administration. I trust we all will take a moment to reflect upon the significance of this achievement being acknowledged on the national stage.” Campuses nominated for the National Blue Ribbon School program, which was founded in 1982, are selected as high performing schools as measured by state assessments. More than 7,500 schools have been recognized since the program’s inception 35 years ago. Public schools nominated for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award must be considered “exemplary high performing schools” and have an economically disadvantaged population of 22 percent or greater. The next step will be completing the application process for consideration by the U.S. Department of Education. The announcement of National Blue Ribbon Schools is made in September and is followed by a ceremony in Washington, D.C., later in the fall. This is the second La Porte ISD campus to be nominated for this national honor in the past six years. Lomax Elementary School was named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School, and campus and district representatives were recognized at the ceremony in the nation’s capital on Nov. 15, 2011. Jennie Reid Elementary also was recently cited as a High-Progress Title 1 school for 2015-16 by the Texas Education Agency. Only 300 campuses in the state were identified as high-performing or high-progress based on statewide reading and mathematics assessments and graduation rates. A high-progress reward school is one in the top 25 percent in annual improvement and/or the top 25 percent of those demonstrating ability to close performance gaps.

When Sonja Angelo took the job as theater teacher at La Porte High School back in the fall of 1967, she had to promise her principal that she wouldn’t “do one of those musicals,” she said. However, when over 50 students showed up to be a part of her first production, Angelo knew she had to figure out some way to get them all onstage. Before long, they were rehearsing Annie Get Your Gun, and the legacy of the La Porte musicals had begun. This year marks the 50th year of “enthusiasm and excellence” since Angelo directed her first musical. Opening night for the anniversary production of Pippin is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 27, with tickets on sale weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the foyer of the theater named after the director who started it all. Tickets are $12 and will also be sold at the box office before each show time. Performances are also scheduled for Friday, Jan. 28; Saturday, Jan. 29; Thursday, Feb. 2; Friday, Feb. 3; and Saturday, Feb. 4. Show times are 7:30 p.m. each day, with 2:30 p.m. matinees added on both Saturdays. Displays showcasing the various decades of the musical will be on display in the foyer of several performances, and musical alumni are invited to attend the cast party following the final performance on Feb. 4. Two things that were important to Angelo when she started the program are as important to her today. First, she wanted to make certain that the opportunity to participate was available to every student who was willing to work hard. Second, she didn’t want any student to have to pay anything to participate, knowing that some families would not be able to afford it. In recent years, productions have grown to almost 300 students onstage, with many others participating behind the scenes or in the orchestra pit. Six La Porte ISD students earned top honors at the district’s annual Rodeo Art Show held on Jan. 12. Winners of the show, which was held at the James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus, will advance to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Show this spring. Brittany McWhorter, a junior at La Porte High School, was the Best of Show winner at the high school level, with freshman Fatima Adame winning a gold medal. Lomax Junior High School eighth grader Perla Quintana won Best of Show in the junior high division, and Lomax Junior High eighth grader Edyamin Hinojosa won the gold medal. In the elementary competition, Tyler Harmon, a fourth grader at College Park Elementary, and Valentina Suarez, a first grader at La Porte Elementary, won Best of Show and a gold medal, respectively. The students will have their artwork on display at NRG Arena in the Hayloft La Porte ISD students, their families, staff members and citizens enjoyed the district’s annual Gallery throughout the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Several James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus students will now advance to the Lee College Regional History Fair on Feb. 3 and 4 after earning top honors at the campus History Fair on Jan. 12. First and second place winners from the campus event will continue in the competition at the regional fair. Those who win first or second at the Lee College event will advance to the State History Day in Austin. While in Washington, D.C., the All-State dance team visited a number of historic sites and watched the inauguration.

As students from Nankai High School in China said goodbye to their host families from La Porte High School the morning of Jan. 20, there were many tears, lots of hugs, and heartfelt promises that their new friendships would become lifelong ones. The group gathered in front of La Porte High School at 4 a.m. to board the bus that would take them on the last leg of their journey before returning to their hometown of Tianjin. The students traveled to New York for the weekend and flew home on Jan. 23. The 33 students and two educators who arrived in La Porte on Jan. 14 make up the ninth group of Nankai representatives to visit the La Porte community since the inception of the district’s global studies program in 2008. One of the highlights of the program for the students is the opportunity to stay in the homes of La Porte High School students and their families, which gives them the chance to experience life as American teenagers during their week here. Nancy Li of Easton Resource Development, who coordinates the group’s visit each year, encourages the LPHS families to conduct their lives as they usually would while the students are here, giving them a chance to sample foods that are typically prepared in their homes and participate in the activities that they would normally do. “Family time” scheduled for their first day in La Porte meant that many of the students enjoyed learning about American football as they watched the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys playoff games with their new Texas friends. A full schedule of activities kept the students and their host “buddies” busy during the week. On Sunday, Jan. 15, they visited NASA/Space Center Houston, and on Monday, Jan. 16, they traveled to Galveston, where they toured Moody Gardens, enjoyed time on the seawall and The Strand, and ate (and danced) at Joe’s Crab Shack. On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Nankai students took a tour of the LPHS campus in the morning and participated in Career Day in the afternoon. Area professionals in the students’ career fields of interest volunteered to take them to lunch and allowed them to “job shadow” at their places of business. The two educators from Nankai had the opportunity to tour two new La Porte ISD campuses—Lomax Elementary and James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus—while the students participated in Career Day.
That evening, the students cheered on the LPHS Bulldogs boys basketball team as La Porte faced the Dobie High School Longhorns, while the educators had the chance to do a little shopping at Baybrook Mall. They attended classes with their LPHS buddies on Wednesday, Jan. 18, until leaving for a tour of Rice University that afternoon. Following the tour, the Nankai and La Porte students attended the Houston Rockets-Milwaukee Bucks game at Toyota Center. On Thursday, Jan. 19, they went on a bus tour of the community and attended classes with their LPHS buddies. That evening, a farewell dinner was held in the LPHS Student Center. At the dinner, LPHS principal Todd Schoppe presented each Nankai student with a La Porte Bulldogs T-shirt and an honorary diplomas from the school. The Nankai students treated those in attendance to several musical performances as well as a demonstration of Chinese writing. Nathan Evans, LPHS Student Council president, spoke on behalf of the LPHS student body, while Xinyu Zhang represented the Nankai students. In 2008, the La Porte Education Foundation made a three-year commitment to fund an exchange program through which 20 LPHS students each year learned about China and then had the opportunity to visit Tianjin, Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an over a two-week period. In 2014, the Foundation also sent three LPHS students and three staff members to Tianjin for the 110th anniversary of Nankai High School and the International Science Conference hosted there. Representatives from Nankai High School have visited La Porte every year since 2009. “Time flies!” said Li in reflecting on the LPISD/Nankai program. “It is so amazing, and I am so grateful, that this program has been going on for 10 years, thanks to the most kind and generous support and leadership by Mr. Lloyd Graham, China Committee members and the greatest people of La Porte.” “This year, our sister school, Nankai High School, sent us 33 students and two educators from China,” she continued. “This is the largest group ever, which made the work for our China Committee much harder and tougher. However, the dedication and the most detailed and organized efforts by our committee leaders overcame many difficulties to assure another year of full accomplishments and successes.”

Baker awarded scholarship for field trips to Houston Holocaust Museum
Trenton “T” Godfrey is all smiles as he wears his own custom La Porte Police Department uniform and is made an honorary member of the police force. The ceremony was held at the La Porte Police Station on Jan. 13.
Yvonne Fisher’s second period class at the James H. Baker Sixth Grade Campus shows a check for $700 from Target Field Trips, Scholarship America that will enable all of Fisher’s social studies students to visit the Houston Holocaust Museum in April. Fisher says they are looking forward to learning more about this critical time in history as well as about museum etiquette. From left are J.C.
