On June 21, 1994, Mary Kaye and I, with our four small children, flew from Warsaw, Poland, to BWI. Our plan was to spend a few years here and then return overseas. God had other ideas. It’s hard to believe that this year marks our 25th year at Bay Area Community Church. As Mary Kaye and I thought about God’s faithfulness, we wanted to do something to express our gratefulness for you. As this journal began to take shape, the Lord provided in a unique way for us to gift this to you. Mary Kaye’s parents were lifelong missionaries who were passionate about making disciples. When they passed, they left us an unexpected gift, and we believe using it to produce this journal is a great way to honor their legacy of ministry. You hear me say it often: “A chapter a day for the rest of your life.” That’s because it is our conviction that life’s highest priority is cultivating a personal, intimate relationship with the Lord. That will only happen if you spend consistent time with God reflecting on His Word. In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus enters the home of Mary and Martha. Martha is distracted with the preparations and disturbed by Mary. Yet Mary was “seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.” Note the response of Jesus to Martha: “you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” One word stands out to me above all others. It is the word “chosen.” Mary made a choice. She chose to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His word. Each of us makes choices as to how we spend our time. Our choices should be grounded in our priorities. And the highest priority in life is cultivating your personal, intimate relationship with the Lord. Our prayer is that every day, for the rest of your life, you will make the choice to spend time with Jesus listening to His word. This journal is a tool to help you toward that end, and a way for us to express our thankfulness for the last 25 incredible years. With gratefulness to God for you,

INTRODUCTION All of us are called by Jesus to “make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). The first person we are to disciple is ourselves. Jesus says, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40). We are to be like our Teacher, Jesus. That happens as we spend time with Him.
A disciple of Jesus is someone who:

We are changed by Jesus as we reflect upon God’s Word and receive what He is saying to us, and then respond in faith and obedience. Disciples grow by continually receiving and responding to the Lord.
RECEIVE and RESPOND. That’s the key to spiritual growth.
One of the problems is our lack of time with the Lord and His Word. That is about to change for you as you commit to spending daily time with Him!
There are two simple questions that help us receive and respond: To receive, we ask: What is God saying to me? To respond, we ask: What am I to do with what God is saying to me?
In your “A Chapter A Day” guide, you will find a simple structure that will help you become a self-feeder as you receive and respond. The structure has been adapted from Wayne Cordeiro’s book “The Divine Mentor” and is called the SOAP Devotional Method.

Observe carefully what the verse says. Ponder the context, setting, its meaning, tone and purpose. Write down a few sentences or a paragraph. And most importantly, answer the question, “What is God saying to me?”

P R AY E R Finish your time in the Word with a personal prayer to God. It might be praise, confession, thanksgiving or intercession. Ask Him to help you apply what you have learned. As a family, we want to collectively pray for our church. You’ll find a prayer included every day in this journal so we can unite our hearts together in prayer.
HOW TO USE THIS JOURNAL Here are a few helpful suggestions on how to use your journal most effectively. 1. Set aside a specific time and quiet place to meet with God. You will need your Bible, this journal and a pen.
2. Receive and Respond using the SOAP method. Read each day’s Bible chapter. Throughout the course of the year you will read through the entire New Testament (260 chapters) and 105 key chapters of the Old Testament. Write down the specific Scripture through which God is speaking to you. Receive by reflecting on that verse, asking, “What is God saying to me?” Respond by writing down your application, asking, “What is God asking me to do?”
3. Title the page. Take a moment to give that chapter a short title: one or two words that will help you remember your time with God’s Word from today.
4. Pray spontaneously. End your time with prayer. Talk to the Lord like you would a friend. Praise Him for His goodness, thank Him for things, and ask Him for that which is on your heart. You can keep a list of those for whom you’re praying in the back of this journal.
5. Pray for Bay Area Community Church. Join with the church family in praying together for our church and the world.
