ABOUT THE MAHAL AYA WHAT IS IT? Previously, the Mahalaya was a newsletter that aimed to showcase our very own Bayanihan as well as bring awareness to current events in the Philippines. This year, HAM is building onto the Mahalaya by teaching bits of culture, recapping events, and more!

The name “Mahalaya” roughly translates to love and freedom, things we hope to promote and spread within our community through thIs digital publication.

HAM

is the collaborative aspect led by Bayanihan’s Historian, Administrative Officer, and Media Relations. We are responsible for upholding Bayanihan’s image through social media, photography, videography, journalism, and graphic design.

ABOUT BAYANIHAN :

WHO ARE WE?

The mission of Bayanihan is to be a support organization that promotes unity and empowerment through the awareness of our diverse community. It strives to be a cultural resource for the community as well as to foster open forum based on mutual respect and understanding. Bayanihan works to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the Filipino and Filipino-American experience through meetings and events that explore our identity, history, and culture. It is important to note that Bayanihan is not (and does not assume to be) the sole representation of the Pilipinx community.

“Bayanihan” directly translates to “community” in Tagalog. The term derived from the traditions in rural areas of the Philippines where community members would come together to physically pick-up a community member’s house and help relocate it. The act of “Bayanihan” represents coming together to accomplish the seemingly impossible in order to help the community. The term “Bayanihan” hopes to foster the community we strive to be.

An emergency rally was held on November 9th, 2019 in response to President Duterte’s recent crackdown on activists in the Philippines. These activists belonged to various legitimate, cause-oriented organizations and were illegally arrested for being critical of the Duterte government’s policies. Some of our own community participated in this march, demanding for the immediate release and freedom of those activists.

CURRENT EVENTS On May 7th of 2019, Governor Jay Inslee signed an SB 5865 form. This form formally constitutes the month of October as Filipino-American History Month (FAHM) in Washington State. The event was celebrated this past October throughout the state and is the start of a national movement to recognize the efforts and involvement of the Filipino-American people throughout the history of America. A new pathway towards education opens, as Filipino-American history has potential to become intertwined with the history and heritage lessons taught in Washington schools. Similarly, this recognition was seen in Canada, where their first Filipino Heritage Month was celebrated by establishing a monument of Jose Rizal.

The recognition of Filipino-American efforts and involvement in history allows Kaibigans and Kababayans to become actively involved in Filipino communities in America. What this means moving forward is that we can expect a rise in Filipino-American led movements, events, or activities that celebrate and promote culture throughout America. This can further segway into national holidays that are

dedicated to Filipino key figures in American history similar to Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez.

These kinds of heroes tend to rise when a community finds itself struggling, and the Filipino-American struggle comes in many forms. The most prominent form is finding an identity to find affinity towards. Many ethnicities also share this struggle, but it is evident in Filipino culture due to the influence and connection to America and various other Asian cultures. The Philippines acts as a hub of diversity and is accepting of a variety of these cultures. So much so that Tagalog speakers often use English words to compensate in modern conversation. Having October as a month to celebrate and share our culture, Filipino-Americans can become more versed and adapted to their culture and recognize that they form their own unique identity.

Washington celebrated the first FAHM with a theme to recognize hard working Filipina-Americans throughout American History: “Pinay Visionaries: Celebrating Filipina American Women”. The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) in Washington recognizes a handful of powerful women who “have overcome racial and gender discrimination, and have persevered to contribute to their respective fields”.

CURRENT EVENTS Visionaries are those who have the ability to perceive and accomplish a change or goal for the betterment of people. Washington's Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), took a step forward this past October by giving the very first official Filipino American History Month (FAHM) the theme of “Pinay Visionaries”.

Anyone can be a visionary and FANHS decided that the first official FAHM in Washington would celebrate with a film that showcases Filipina American “women as leaders, laborers, scholars, scientists, and activists who have been the backbone of the Filipina/o American community”.

Some notable visionaries presented in the film are: “Dr. Dorothy Laigo Cordova is the Founder and Executive Director of the Filipino American National Historical Society. She began organizing and

advocating for the Filipino American community since the 1950s. Her vision has paved the way for FANHS, Filipino American History Month, and Filipino American Studies.”

“Victoria ‘Vicki’ Manalo Draves is the first Asian-American Olympic gold medalist. She won two gold medals in platform and springboard diving in 1948.”

“Dr. Felicisima ‘Ping’ Serafica is the first Filipina-American professor of psychology to receive tenure in the US. She helped establish one of the Philippines’ first hospitals for children with mental disabilities and the country’s first interdisciplinary mental health clinic.”

“Thelma Buchholdt is the first Filipina-American elected to a legislature in the United States in 1974 and the first Asian American elected to serve as President of the National Order of Women Legislators.”

“Dr. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon is the first Filipina/o to receive a Ph.D. in History from Stanford University. She was a professor, a historic preservationist, and the author of Little Manila is in the Heart and Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong.”

While many of these figures have impacted American History, there are countless other Pinays who have contributed to and changed the landscape of America today. Even within our own communities there are many Filipino/a Americans who continue to serve and advocate for the equity in representation and opportunity of all people. The fight continues on as the nation moves toward a new era, many representatives of our communities and the communities of all people of color aim to achieve what Washington has created for the Fil-Am community: a chance to be recognized as a part of the ever changing history of the US. Mungo (sweet red bean) Sweet white beans Nata de coco (coconut gel) Macapuno (gelatinous coconut string) Jackfruit

Shaved Ice Evaporated milk Coconut milk Ube ice cream Mango sorbet

Directions In a serving glass, layer mungo, sweet white beans, nata de coco, macapuno, and jackfruit. Top with shaved ice. Drizzle about one tablespoon of evaporated milk or coconut milk over the shaved ice. Top with a scoop of ube ice cream or mango sorbet.

Serve and enjoy!

Philippine Mythology?

Mythology can be interpreted as a way of understanding the world and the forces that nature presents. Historically, Filipinx folks have used it to understand and explain phenomena in the natural world.

MONSTERS and MYTHOLOGY

ASWANG A vampiric beast and the general term for most lower mythological creatures. They are very murderous and demonic appearing in nature.

DUWENDE

Typically a female monster that applies a line of oil to her stomach that separates her top half from the bottom and grows large wings.

She tends to hunt pregnant women, using her long tongue to scoop up the fetus and mother’s intestines. She only hunts at night and if she doesn’t reattach her body by sunrise, her lower half disintegrates and is lost forever.

Dwarves that live in mounds of dirt, typically in forests since humans have built over their land. They’re mischievous creatures that will torment you if you were to accidentally step on their mounds, throw water on top of them while emptying buckets, or forget to announce ‘Tabi Tabi Po’ as you stroll through their forests.

SIRENA

A large dark giant that’s usually seen blending in with the great balete trees and smoking large clouds into the night. They are generally seen as gentle giants.

An aquatic creature with the head and torso of a human female and the tail of a fish. Essentially a mermaid and guardian of the sea in Philippine mythology.
