Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s view of the Bay Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s mother Mary lived in the hamlet of Masongill from 1883 to 1917 and he married his first wife Louisa at St Oswald’s in Thornton-in-Lonsdale in 1885. Although he was a visitor and never lived here himself, he did set stories in the area and he found his inspiration for the name Sherlock in Ingleton.

‘Uncle Jeremy’s Household’ was written in the year of his marriage and is a prototype for the Sherlock Holmes stories which were published from 1887 onwards, but more relevant to Morecambe Bay is ‘The Surgeon of Gaster Fell’, which was first published in 1890. It contains the following quote:

“From the little barren knoll above the church one may see to the westward a fringe of gold upon an arc of silver, where the great Morecambe sands are washed by the Irish Sea. To the east, Ingleborough looms purple in the distance.”

The knoll is Banks Hill (pictured), above the church where he was married, and you can stand in the same spot today on one of the footpaths in the Westhouse Walks network. More information is available from Uncle Jeremy’s Household shop in Ingleton village centre, where you can see first editions containing the stories and buy souvenirs containing the above quotation.

Versatile Clinic It is estimated that every year more than 400,000 people in the UK need medical attention because of accidents they have had in the garden. With warm summer days approaching, many will be spending more time outside, but gardening is hard work and after a long break away it can take its toll on your back. Avoid any accidents by following these simple rules: •

Use a kneeling mat instead of bending let your legs take the strain instead of stretching your back Take regular breaks and try not to stay in the same position for too long Stand up and gently lean backwards 5-10 times regularly When lifting, keep the load close to your body and bend from your knees (not from your back) and push up with your legs Avoid over stretching

When mowing, keep your body in line with the mower and keep an upright posture.

Watch out for uneven steps, broken paving slabs and slippery paths.

Back pain will normally get better within a few weeks so it is important to stay as active as possible and not take to your bed, as this will make it harder to get going. Take pain relief and your pain should ease within 2 weeks and recover over approximately 4-6 weeks.

If you have pain that persists then it may be the right time to contact a Chartered Physiotherapist.

Strawberry & Lemon Roulade

Mix up the traditional strawberries and cream during Wimbledon this year, and try making this simple but delicious roulade instead. With the addition of light and fluffy meringue and zesty lemon curd you’ll be making this recipe year after year!

YOU WILL NEED 4 Egg whites 200g Golden Caster Sugar 200g Lemon Curd 200ml Double Cream 250g Strawberries - See Tip Pinch of salt

EQUIPMENT Swiss Roll tin (approx 23x30cm) Baking Paper Electric Hand Whisk or a Stand Mixer with whisk attachment fitted

FOR THE MERINGUE Heat the oven to 180oC/160 fan/Gas Mark 4.

Line a swiss roll tin, (about 23cm x 30cm) with baking paper - leave it slightly too wide as this will help you lift the cooked meringue out of the tin.

Tip the egg whites into a large clean bowl with a pinch of salt, and whisk until soft peaks form. Then slowly add the sugar whilst still whisking, until stiff and glossy.

Spoon the mixture evenly on to the baking tray and bake for 15 minutes until crisp and lightly golden. Remove from the oven and cool for 5 minutes. Place a new sheet of greaseproof paper lightly dusted with sugar on the counter and gently turn the meringue out. Peel away the paper that lined your tin, and leave the meringue to cool completely.

Whilst the meringue is cooling, wash, hull and chop about half the strawberries in to bite sized pieces, whilst reserving the rest for decorating the top - leave these slightly bigger - see picture.

Clean your whisk, then tip the double cream in to a new bowl and whisk until firm peaks form - careful not to over whip or it can split!

Spread a layer of the lemon curd over the meringue - you may not need to use it all,

Sprinkle over the chopped strawberries and any other fruit you might be using.

Then, starting at one of the long sides, make a small fold to start the roll. Once you’ve done this, use the baking paper to help you roll up the rest of the roulade, trying to keep the roll fairly tight without pushing all the filling out. Don’t worry too much about cracking the meringue as this will happen.

Place the roulade on a plate, seam side down. Spread the remaining cream along the top, and then sprinkle over the remaining fruit for decoration. Leave it to chill for 30 minutes in the fridge to firm up before you serve!

Raspberries work very well instead of strawberries - it’s even better with both!

You can also experiment with different curd flavours - why not try orange curd with chopped peaches or mango?
