Grafenwoehr, Germany - The 4th Battalion of the 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment celebrated its 10th anniversary and choose that occasion to honor its fallen heroes. The parade field in front of the battalion building was named after Spec. Justin Hebert and the conference room after First Lt. Stephen Prasnicki. The father of the fallen lieutenant and civilian and military distinguished guests attended the ceremony. "King of the Herd" is the nickname of 4-319 AFAR. The establishment of the 319th Field Artillery Regiment goes back to 1917. It was deployed in WW I and II. In modern times, the battalion fought as part of the "global war on terror" in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2006, the Sky Soldiers became the 4th Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment at Warner Barracks, Bamberg. The mission of the parachutists is to support the fighting troops with artillery fire. For that purpose, the Sky Soldiers are equipped with artillery pieces that can be dropped on parachutes also along the front lines. In the fall of 2013, the parachute gunners moved to Grafenwoehr. The unit is part of the 173d Airborne Brigade based in Vicenza, Italy and maintains a partnership with the market town of Kirchenthumbach. Battalion commander Lt. Col. David Pasquale and Cmd. Sgt. Major Robert Edwards Jr. welcomed the soldiers of the U.S. Army and the Bundeswehr to the ceremony. Mayor Jürgen Kürzinger represented the partner town Kirchenthumbach, 2d Mayor Anita Stauber represented the garrison town Grafenwoehr and Mayor Hans-Martin Schertl the town of Vilseck.
Following the military chaplain’s prayer, Lt. Col. David Pasquale spoke about the history of the 4-319th and the service of and death of the soldiers to be honored. Spec. Justin Hebert belonged to the unit from Dec. 2001 to Aug. 1, 2003. He was the first parachute gunner who lost his life in the 173rd Brigade in the fight against global terror. On Aug. 1, 2003 his vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Kirkuk, Iraq. In honor of Hebert, a stone with a bronze plaque was placed on the parade ground in front of the battalion building where his memoirs can be read. A plaque commemorating First Lt. Stephen Prasnicki hangs in the unit’s conference room. Prasnicki was a platoon commander in B Battery, 4-319 AFAR from Dec. 2011 to June 2012. He died in action on June 27, 2012 in Maidan Shahr, Afghanistan when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. David Prasnicki, the father of the fallen lieutenant, had come especially from the United States to attend the ceremony. He said that honoring his son meant a lot to him and his family. He has a daughter and another son, who after the death of his brother likewise began his service as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Lt. Derek Steven Hines and Corporal Emmanuel Hernandez are also honored on the memory wall in the battalion building. Both lost their lives in operation in Afghanistan in 2005.

Many official guests, representing the military, politics, administrations and offices, including county commissioners and mayors, came to the 7ATC change of command.
Reunion with old friends Grafenwoehr, Germany -- Brig. Gen. Antonio G. Aguto is the new commanding general of 7th Army Training Command (7ATC). Lt. Gen. Frederick “Ben” Hodges, commanding general, U.S. Army Europe, officiated the change of command. For the past two years, the command had been led by Brig. Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli who was promoted to major general by Hodges during the ceremony. Cavoli is moving to Hawaii.

Numerous military and civilian guests attended the ceremony near the Water Tower. Among them Dr. Philipp Stiel, military liaison officer of the Bavarian State Chancellery, Oberpfalz Government President Axel Bartelt, county commissioners Andreas Meier (Neustadt/Waldnaab County) and Richard Reisinger (Amberg- Sulzbach County), and Weiden’s Lord Mayor Kurt Seggewiß. Representative for all mayors that were present, a greeting went to Grafenwoehr mayor Edgar Knobloch and Vilseck mayor Hans-Martin Schertl.

He was also stationed in Schweinfurt and Nuremberg, and deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq and lastly in Kandahar, Afghanistan. During the reception at Tower View Conference Center, Aguto and his wife Melanie were able to make first contact with new and old partners. Aguto thanked everybody again for the warm welcome by the “7ATC family” and said he was looking forward to meetings with German partners and neighbors. "It was here, in the heart of Bavaria, that we felt the warmth and friendship of our neighbors. We feel honored that we got another chance to serve by your side and it is great to see so many old friends again,” said Aguto in his welcome remarks. Aguto said that this military community has a special place in the heart of the Aguto family because they just left Vilseck six years ago. Tour of the old town of Grafenwoehr
The program included historic and cultural highlights as well as economic and social aspects. Aside from a tour of the old town with town hall and Mariä-Himmelfahrts-Church, the officers visited the natural stage on Schönberg hill. Knobloch invited the Americans to visit the events that take place there. The guests were also very interested in Annaberg mountain with its rock caverns, Way of the Cross, Maria-Hilf-Church and Lourdes grotto. The tour also included a visit to Zechmayer Co. The guests were surprised by the production of the mold maker who produces tools used by nearly all well-known car makers to

produce the interior of cars. Another stop was the recently reopened school. Principal Thomas Schmidt gave a tour of the facility, highlighting its modern equipment by which the Americans were noticeably impressed. Afterwards, the Historical Society invited the newcomers to a visit of the Culture- and Military Museum, now joined by their wives and Col. W. Clark Lindner, 7ATC chief of staff and his wife Christine. While Josef Neubauer guided the tour of the military part of the museum, Reinhard Trauner explained the new exhibition concept. The day ended with a get-together over dinner to better get to know each other. “I wanted to spark our American friends’ interest in Grafenwoehr and show them some of our sights. Change of Command at local German Army unit Grafenwoehr, Germany -- Lt. Col. Florian Rommel is the new commander of the Office of the German Military Representative (DMV), the German Army unit on Grafenwoehr Training Area. During a military ceremony, Rommel took command and former commander, Lt. Col. Anton Kussinger, was retired.

In his opening remarks, Lt. Col. Kussinger especially welcomed the commanding general, 7th Army Training Command, Brig. Gen. Antonio A. Aguto and Brig. Gen. Michael Matz of the German Army‘s Territorial Command in Berlin. Politicians attending the ceremony included Bavarian State Parliamentarian Tobias
Reiß and Deputy County Commissioner Albert Nickl. The ceremony was accompanied by the Air Force Music Corps from Erfurt who played German, Austrian and American marches. Turning a raw diamond into a jewel
Florian Rommel was born in Bamberg and commissioned in 1988 in Volkach. He is married and has a son. His military training includes AIT at the Technical College of the German Army in Aachen; a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg; and in 2003, a one-year training as explosive ordnance officer at the Royal Military College in Shrivenham, England. He served as maintenance officer in several units at Stetten am Kalten Markt, Strasburg, Montabaur, Veitshöchheim, Hardheim and Volkach. His last assignment was as ammunition staff officer and head of division for hand-held anti-tank weapons and rockets at the German Armed Forces Office for Equipment, Communication Technology and Utilization in Koblenz.
In his speech, mayor Edgar Knobloch outlined the importance of the small German Army command as the German Army’s representative on the U.S. Army installation and as a point of contact for the city. Former U.S. Lt. Gen. Mark P. Hertling once coined the phrase of Grafenwoehr being the “crown jewel of the U.S. Army in Europe.” Knobloch said that the civilian employees and the German Army had diligently contributed to turning this raw diamond into a jewel. He also informed the new commander about the advantages of Grafenwoehr, which covers the second largest area of any town in Bavaria, and invited him to local events.

Grafenwoehr, Germany – Athletic challenges, military history and camaraderie were the focal point of the trip of German and American soldiers to the Italian mountains. Upon invitation by the Italian Embassy and with a lot of support and help from the German and American commands, the German Army unit on Grafenwoehr Training Area started its trip to the Rhaetian Alps. The group also included local civilian employees of the German Army, American soldiers from the 702d EOD and 7ATC Range Control. The group stayed at the Alpini barracks located on Passo Tonale where they also met with Italian mountain infantry soldiers.

The joint and very challenging mountain tours took them to the snowfields of the 3650-meter-high Monte Vioz in the Cevedale Group. The difficult fixed rope route to the Monte Albano in Mori was a special experience for the American soldiers. Installation access changes on the horizon for U.S. Army Europe WIESBADEN, Germany -- As you travel around Europe, you are likely to see some increases in host nation security efforts, as well as in U.S. Army Europe's garrison security posture. U.S. Army Europe's Antiterrorism Division would like to remind everyone that the command's common goal is to ensure it is postured to counter the threat of terrorism and provide a safe and secure environment for everyone. You may see additional security guards, Soldiers and military police in and around U.S. Army Europe installations, more frequent and thorough security checks and inspections, and other random security activities. It is the collective efforts of security professionals, Soldiers, civilian workers and family members who help keep everyone safe. Given the significant and persistent threat the world faces, one way to execute the protection mission is to take advantage of the newest security-related technologies. Fielding new equipment with advanced technology enhances the ability to detect dangerous materials and improves the quality of searches at access control points and security checkpoints. Some of these technologies are now available at Army Europe installations.

U.S. Army Europe is employing new equipment with advanced detection capability at installations throughout the region according to a force protection specialist in U.S. Army Europe's Antiterrorism Division. Coupled with expanded measures designed to reduce the terrorist threat, U.S. Army Europe's security professionals are working closely with host nation partners to maintain a robust deterrence and response capability, the force protection specialist explained. "As we implement these new technologies, visitors to installations may experience delays or other inconveniences when accessing our facilities," the force protection specialist said. "However, we anticipate these delays will be minimal, and short-term as we adjust our procedures."

Carry a passport when traveling outside the country U.S. Army Europe Office of the Provost Marshal officials want to remind members of the American forces community in Europe to carry their passports when traveling to countries to which they are not assigned. A common misconception is that European borders without checkpoints can be crossed freely. However, while this may be true for residents of countries within the European Union’s Schengen zone, the agreement does not extend to U.S. or other non-EU citizens. In some European countries federal police have the right to pull vehicles over and check passports without suspecting a person of wrongdoing, and in some nations only a national form of identification such as a passport is recognized as valid ID. A passport also establishes citizenship if its bearer needs assistance from a U.S. embassy or consulate.

The Bavaria Community & Spouses’ Club: What we do Don’t stop reading just because you saw “spouses” in the title! Hopefully you also caught the “Bavarian Community” part. We are a private organization open to all DoD ID card holders — meaning active duty military, civilians, retirees, and spouses can join our club.

As times have changed, resources have dwindled, and communities have consolidated, the old days of Officer & Enlisted Spouses Clubs have gone to the wayside and a Community Club open to all ranks, services, and spouses has emerged for the Tower Barracks and Rose Barracks communities, otherwise known as the Bavaria Community & Spouses’ Club (BCSC). So what does the BCSC do? In 2015, we awarded over $125,000 through grants to private organizations, such as FRGs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and scholarships to youth and adults in our community who are continuing their education.

How to stay safe Incidents around Europe in recent weeks may have made some members of our Bavaria military community uneasy regarding the security of our great community. It is important to know that the Bavaria military community and every level of command in Europe closely and regularly monitor the security situation for Soldiers and families across Europe. In addition, U.S. Army Europe maintains several key tools to inform our communities of travel warnings, suspected threats and actions to take in the event of an incident. Rules DoD employees should know this political season I’m sure you’ve all seen political posts in full effect on Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat recently. The opinions are just going to get louder, too, before the election this November.
and you’ve been identified as a DoD employee on that platform, make sure it’s clear that the views you’re expressing are your own, NOT the DoD’s.
As members of the Defense Department, we have a responsibility to be smart about what we post, as well as how we participate in political activity and how we support political campaigns.
While you’re allowed to “follow,” “friend” and “like” a party or candidate, you’re not allowed to share or retweet information posted to that corresponding social media page. You’re not supposed to post links to that page’s content, either. It’s considered participating in political activities.

DoD employees are limited to certain political activities under the Hatch Act, which is meant to protect employees from political coercion at work, as well as make sure employees move up in their careers based on their merit, not political affiliation.
Always remember – don’t violate the Uniform Code of Military Justice or service regulations. That means don’t show contempt for public officials, post unprofessional material or release sensitive information.
So for those who are politically active, here’s a refresher of what limitations you need to be aware of:

Political Activity: Active-duty service members (in and out of uniform) aren’t allowed to engage in partisan political activities, meaning no campaigning for candidates, joining in on fundraising activities, serving as an officer in a partisan club or speaking at a partisan gathering. All military personnel are also supposed to avoid implying or appearing to imply that any of their political activities are endorsed or sponsored by the DoD.
Political Activity: While on duty or in a federal building, DoD civilian employees are not allowed to engage in political activities such as sending or forwarding political emails or posting political messages to social media accounts, even from your own devices. Don’t ever use government equipment for those activities, either.
However, when out of uniform, service members are allowed to express their personal political opinions, donate money to campaigns or organizations and attend political events as a spectator. But again, that’s out of uniform — not in it. Here are more specifics on the rules.
However, when it comes to what you can do politically, there are basically two groups of civilians: Further restricted employees and less restricted employees. • • •

The above people are prohibited from participating in political activity, especially any that’s sponsored or supported by a party, political group or candidate up for election. You also can’t solicit or receive political contributions. However, further restricted employees can make monetary contributions, express personal opinions and attend campaign events or fundraisers sponsored by a candidate – they just can’t actively participate. Less restricted employees include: All DoD civilians who aren’t listed above, including schedule C political appointees
Social Media: Like the social media rules for service members, DoD civilians are allowed to express personal views and politics via their own social media platforms, but they have to make it clear that the views they’re expressing are personal and not the DoD’s. Since further restricted employees (as listed above) aren’t allowed to be part of partisan political activity, they also can’t share or retweet information posted to the social media page of a party or candidate. They can’t post links from a party or candidate’s account, either, but they can “follow,” “friend” or “like” them. To get more specifics on how to avoid violating the rules, click here. These people can volunteer with a political campaign or organization on their personal time. That includes organizing rallies or meetings, making calls on behalf of a candidate, serving as a delegate to a party convention and working for a party to get out the vote on Election Day. Less restricted employees still cannot solicit or receive political contributions, though.

Beginner’s guide to trash and recycling at USAG Bavaria GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — Leftovers, empty beer bottles and broken coffee makers: in the trash they go. While the one-bag system is acceptable in the United States, DoD personnel living in Germany must abide by German and garrison trash rules. Which means you have to sort and recycle.

Host nation law and IMCOM Europe policy require all Soldiers, training units, DoD civilians and family members to separate paper, plastics, glass, metal, bulky items, electrical products, automotive waste, hazardous substances and batteries from non-recyclable trash, and to discard these items in designated locations. Those illegally dumping their waste while off-post — which includes Netzaberg — are subject to hefty fines imposed by the German government. And those dumping illegally while on-post can face UCMJ actions. The rules — all designed to contribute to an environmentallysustainable nation and a greener planet — may seem complicated at first, but it’s an easy system to follow, once you get the hang of it.
Here’s what you need to know about trash and recycling at USAG Bavaria. Regular household waste You have to discard regular trash and recyclables — such as leftovers, cardboard, milk cartons, empty cans and glass jars — in the community where you live, in accordance with German law. You might be tempted to bring trash on post for disposal, but be aware: not only is it against German law, but it is also against IMCOM Europe policy. Whether you live on or off-post, separate these products into different bins and either set outside for scheduled pickup or discard at the community recycling point. Refuse, paper and plastic are usually collected by waste trucks, but check your community Waste PickUp Calendar and Recycling and Trash Separation Guide for details. Refuse, or “Restmuell” What is it? Kitchen and food waste, such as fruit and vegetable remains, leftovers, coffee filters and other organic and compostable waste; used paper products; diapers; torn clothing; ceramics and china; pet litter and non-recyclable materials. Paper, or “Papier” What is it? Cardboard, envelopes, magazines, paper egg cartons and wrapping paper.

You’re the subject of a FLIPL… Now what?
If government property is lost, damaged or destroyed (LDD), a FLIPL will take place to determine who is at fault for this loss.
A Soldier who is hand delivered the FLIPL packet has 7 calendar days to reply to the FLIPL. A Soldier who is unavailable, but in the same country, has 15 calendar days from the date the FLIPL was mailed or e-mailed to the Soldier. Finally, a Soldier who is unavailable and in a different country from where the FLIPL takes place has 30 calendar days to reply to the FLIPL.
The purpose of a FLIPL is not punishment. However, if a Soldier is found to be at fault for this loss, he may face financial liability up to one month’s base pay (if Enlisted) or the full monetary loss (if Officer).
The Soldier’s rebuttal is attached to the FLIPL and returned to the IO. The IO sends the FLIPL and rebuttal through the chain of command to the Approving Authority, normally the Soldier’s battalion commander.
In order to be found financially liable for LDD government property, the Soldier must have willfully or negligently caused a loss to the government. To be considered willful, the Soldier must have acted with specific intent to lose or damage the property.
An attorney will review the FLIPL and the rebuttal to determine if the survey is legally sufficient. Only after all of these steps can the Soldier who rebuts the FLIPL be held financially liable.
A FLIPL is a Financial Liability Investigation of Property Loss, as outlined in Army Regulation 735–5 on Property Accountability Policies.
To be considered negligent, four factors must be met: 1. The Soldier must have been responsible for the property; 2. The Soldier was at fault for the LDD; 3. The Soldier’s fault was the direct cause of the loss; and 4. The Army has suffered actual monetary loss.

If all four of these factors of negligence do not occur, a Soldier cannot be considered negligent as it pertains to the FLIPL. A FLIPL does not have to equal automatic financial liability. A Soldier has rights as it pertains to a FLIPL. For a FLIPL to result in financial liability, the above factors must be found to be true by the Investigating Officer (IO) appointed by the chain of command. If an IO finds a Soldier to be liable, a Soldier is entitled to rebut the FLIPL. The Soldier can reply to the FLIPL by explaining their side of the story – explain the situation and why you believe you should not be held financially liable for the loss.
If a Soldier is found to be financially liable, the Soldier can be held liable for the entire monetary loss to the government. The amount is determined by the property’s current fair market value with depreciation. An Enlisted Soldier’s financial liability generally cannot exceed base pay of one month. Base pay amount is determined by the amount of the Soldier’s base pay at the time of the incident – not when liability is actually recommended. For commanding officers, the financial liability may be the entire value of the loss to the government – even if the value exceeds one month of base pay. SEMBACH, Germany — The U.S. Army Europe Registry of Motor Vehicles announced that it is increasing the vehicle registration fee in Germany by $5 to $35 dollars.
The increase is necessary because the costs for personnel, supplies, data processing and equipment have continually grown over the years.
Driver license fees are also going up to $20.
The registry is a supplementary mission non-appropriated fund entity based in Sembach, Germany. The fund does not generate profits but must recover operational costs and maintain fund solvency. The fund has sustained losses for the past three years and can no longer absorb the losses without increasing fees.
These changes go into effect Oct. 1, 2016. Licensing fees were last increased in 1986 and the registration fee was raised to $30 in 2006 to fund the change to German license plates.

Claims tip: File your notice of loss or damage within 75 days
5. If you file your claim within 75-days of delivery, you do not have to file the NOLD, or give the TSP notice of the loss or damage at delivery or after delivery. Also you do not have to worry about the nine months deadline to file your claim.
The 75-day notice period could be extended if you were deployed, on extended TDY or hospitalized during the 75 days after delivery. Requests for an extension must be approved by the Area Claims Office. However, it is best not to count on receiving an extension, and to make every effort to put the TSP on notice as soon as possible. Keep track of this 75-day notice period and avoid missing out when it comes to payment of your claim.

1. File notice at the time of delivery. Note lost or damage goods on the form titled “Notice of Loss/Damage at Delivery,” also known as NOLD, at the time of delivery. This satisfies the 75-day notice requirement for those items. 2. File notice of damage discovered after the date of delivery on www.move.mil. You should provide notice on the Defense Personal Property System, or DPS. You can do this from the comfort of your home or office, or you can take advantage of the computer kiosks at the Office of the Staff Judge Advoate claims offices. When you use our kiosk, our claims professionals can talk you through the process of filing your notice or claim online and answer claims related questions. 3. File notice of damage discovered after the date of delivery by fax, e-mail or mail. Loss or damage discovered after the movers have departed can also be noted on either DD Form 1840R/1851 “Notice of Loss or Damage After Delivery” and using the contact information listed on the delivery document. 4. Within the first 70 days after delivery, go to your servicing Military Claims Office. Claims personnel can dispatch the notice to the TSP and help you file notice for your claim, or can assist you in filing your claim online. A new change to Army regulations ensures that officers selected by boards for promotion meet the standards for exemplary conduct laid out in U.S. law, before their names are forwarded to the Secretary of the Army.
New directive: officers must be vetted before promotions are confirmed
While the Army has always investigated officers to ensure they are suitable for promotion, in the past such vetting usually took place at the same time that senior Army, Defense and congressional leadership were considering them, rather than before. Now, the directive published Thursday, July 18, requires that officers who are selected for promotion be vetted for mental, physical, moral, and professional fitness and meet the standards for exemplary conduct before their names are forwarded to the secretary of the Army for certification. The previous concurrent vetting process sometimes resulted in the Army having to remove officers from promotion lists, resulting in embarrassment for the individual and the service. "Previously, the Army did not systematically screen all officers recommended for promotion or federal recognition for adverse or reportable information prior to nomination or confirmation," said Albert S. Eggerton, chief of Officer Selection Board Policy. "Consequently, some officers confirmed by the Senate were not discovered to have adverse or reportable information until just prior to appointment." 21 | Bavarian Times
According to Army Directive 2016-26, "a post-board screening initiated by the director of Military Personnel Management will be conducted on officers selected for promotion to captain through colonel and CW3 through CW5 before the results of the promotion selection board are forwarded to the secretary of the Army." The post-board screening includes a review of information in official files maintained by the Army Criminal Investigation Command, the Department of the Army inspector general, the restricted portion of the Army Military Human Resource Record, and a query for suspension of favorable personnel actions. "Adverse information" can include, among other things, SHARP-related offenses; domestic assault or child abuse; DUIs/DWIs; possession or involvement with child pornography; positive urinalysis; false swearing; patterns of misconduct; or ongoing investigations or cases under review with Criminal Investigation Command, the Department of the Army, the Inspector General, or their unit. Similar changes have been made for officers who are being considered for promotion to first lieutenant or chief warrant officer.

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — The Army & Air Force Exchange Service treats active-duty Soldiers like family. When Soldiers transition to Individual Ready Reserve, or IRR, status, they remain family to the Exchange, keeping the shopping benefit they’ve earned. “Soldiers transitioning to IRR status are very much a part of the Exchange family and can still shop at their local Exchange,” said Grafenwoehr Exchange General Manager Carl Carpenter. “Their Exchange benefit, including tax-free shopping and competitive prices, remains intact during their time in IRR.” Soldiers should first check with the garrison customs office for any restrictions for those in OCONUS. Soldiers transitioning from active duty and their families can continue to visit the Exchange, Express, mall and food court. They can also shop online at shopmyexchange.com for ex-
clusive military pricing on many items and an expanded merchandise selection. Besides retaining shopping privileges, those in IRR status keep their Military Star card benefits. If they don’t have an account, they are eligible to apply for one. “The Military Star card offers a competitive interest rate and no late, annual or over-limit fees,” Carpenter said. “Cardholders also receive extra savings at Exchange food courts and free shipping on shopmyexchange.com to an APO mail box and rewards points for every $1 spent.” “It’s been an honor serving these Soldiers while they served our country,” Carpenter said. “The Exchange looks forward to being there for them as they transition to IRR status.”

Honey bee colonies rescued from buildings set to be demolished
Glaab identified the honey bees during the legally-required environmental review during the demolition project and contacted Helmut Schwindl for help because of his beekeeping expertise. Legal protection of bees Honey bees are considered a domestic species and are protected by Germany’s Tierschutzgesetz, or Animal Welfare Law. Honey bees are essential for a healthy environment, because they pollinate the flowering plants that produce fruits and seeds. We directly benefit because our crops get pollinated, and we are provided with food, honey and beeswax.
Schwindl, who participates in a “bee father” program, will teach the new bee owners about beekeeping and mentor them through the learning process. Fascinating lives of honey bees Honey bees lead busy, socially complex lives. All hives contain one queen and thousands of female “worker” bees and male “drone” bees. The queen is responsible for mating and regenerating the hive. It takes 21 days for worker-bee eggs to develop into mature adults. Once the worker-bee matures, she will take on many roles over the course of her 40 to 60-day life. She starts off as a hive cleaner, and then becomes a midwife caring for the young. After that, she helps build the hive with her wax-producing abdominal glands, guards and protects the hive and finally forages for pollen, water and nectar
Unlike their bee cousins, wasps, hornets and hundreds of native German bee species are protected by Germany’s Nature Protection Law. It is prohibited for people to kill them without reason.
The drone’s main job is to mate with a queen from a different hive.
Bee colonies for new beekeepers Honey bees work hard to build their hives and are aggressive towards anyone or anything that could harm their home. Working with bees is a dangerous task for someone who does not know what they are doing. Schwindl has been beekeeping for five years and was prepared for the task.
Bees not only have complex social lives, they use complex ways to communicate with one another. Forager honey bees use dances to communicate new food source locations to other forager bees. When a new food source is found, she goes back to the nest and performs a dance by running in a precise pattern, using specific lengths, turns and speeds to communicate the location. This dance pattern tells the other bees the direction and distance of the flowers from the hive

5 steps to become a volunteer at USAG Bavaria Volunteer opportunities are regularly uploaded by organizations across the Bavarian garrison onto an interactive — and now mobile-friendly — web-portal called Army OneSource.
It took a few weeks, a second cup of coffee, and some selfrallying to finally sit down and browse my options. As a young educated Army spouse confronting the challenges of adjusting to a first duty station, I struggled with the change and sincerely believed securing a position in an already heavilysaturated Army community was nearly impossible. Nevertheless, I had promised myself several months before to be proactive about my professional development. Turns out, many organizations at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria are actually in need of help. Organizations such as your Family Readiness Group, American Red Cross, nearby DoDDS Schools, MWR and the Directorate of Human Resources have volunteer openings ranging from assistant administration and leadership to after-school sports coaches and special events coordinators. Many of these positions coincide with the work of paid employees and — often after demonstration of dedication and proficiency — evolve into employment.

Army OneSource, which you can visit at www.myarmyonesource.com, is a comprehensive resource for military families, providing those new to the military community with information on Army-specific programs and instant access to online trainings. The website is also home to the volunteer database known as the Volunteer Management Information System, or VMIS, where interested spouses, family members or retirees can search and apply for current volunteer opportunities on particular installations and interact with volunteer coordinators. Much like an online job listing, VMIS demonstrates the community’s demand for volunteer engagement and allows individuals to identify and pursue positions compatible with their background and objectives. Whether you are a young professional seeking office experience, a teenager looking to support the surrounding region, or a seasoned specialist, many on-post offices offer relevant opportunities and desperately depend on your support.
A bit of advice: When you do settle in a volunteer position, be sure your employer and you sign a Volunteer Agreement (DD Form 2793). This spells out your responsibilities. But more importantly, the fine print protects you “for certain purposes relating to compensation for injuries occurring during the performance of approved volunteer services.” Ensure everyone signs it and keep in your records. Here’s how to apply for a volunteer position using VMIS: Step 1: Register for an Army OneSource Account • Go to www.myarmyonesource.com. • Select “Register” at the top right • Complete the registration form. • TIP: For subsequent account access, simply click “Login” at the top right. Step 2: Access VMIS • Click “Volunteer Tools” from the top right. Step 3: Locate Your Installation • Click “Advanced Search” to enter the garrison name or, using the CONUS or OCONUS map, click the state or country where the garrison is located. • Identify your “Community” (ex: USAG Bavaria). Step 4: Narrow the Search • Choose the country or state of the installation from the “State/Region” drop box (ex: Germany or Armed Forces Europe). • Enter the zip code of your installation in “Postal Code” (ex: 09114 for Grafenwoehr and 09112 for Vilseck) • TIP: To explore numerous opportunities, select “All” for the Organization Group and Organization drop boxes. More paper and cardboard containers for Netzaberg

The large recycled paper containers — now a total of 11 in the Netzaberg community — are located at the neighborhood’s three recycling sites, listed on page 12 of the Netzaberg Recycling Guide. Regular curbside pickup of blue paper and cardboard bins at each house also continues on a monthly basis. Prompted by Netzaberg residents’ concerns about overflowing bins at recycling points, U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria requested additional containers from Neustadt County’s Waste Management Office in June, said Helmut Bueller, Tower Barracks Waste Management Officer and SORT Coordinator. According to Bueller, discussions between the garrison and Neustadt County originally included additional metal, glass and paper recycling containers as well, but further analysis determined that the current containers and pick-up schedule is sufficient for the number of residents. It all comes down to learning the German rules for sorting and recycling, said USAG Bavaria’s command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Todd. “In the States, we’re used to throwing everything away all in one bag, and throwing those bags away in big containers,” Todd said. “However, in Germany, according to both host nation law and Army policy, we have to sort and recycle trash. do it right, the containers issued to every house and the containers at the recycling points are sufficient.” The county of Neustadt, which has about 100,000 residents total including residents of Netzaberg, collects an average of 60 liters of refuse and 240 liters of paper and cardboard per pickup cycle from German households. U.S. households in Netzaberg are issued 240-liter containers for both refuse and paper. The rules for sorting trash may seem complicated at first, Todd acknowledges, but “most people want to do the right thing and will take the time to understand the system.” “However, those who dump illegally — for example, those who leave big bags of unsorted trash at the recycling points — are subject to both county fines and disciplinary action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.” The annual pickup schedule for Netzaberg waste is available as a large magnetized calendar at Self-Help.

Garmisch IMCOM employee recognized for 70 years of service GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany -- Installation Management Command recognized a member of its workforce here Sept. 15 for seven decades of service.
five years, he transferred in 1950 to Camp Stoneman, California, and then saw duty in Japan and South Korea in 1953 serving as MacArthur's enlisted aide. He transferred to Frankfurt, Germany, in 1957, and in 1965 returned to South Korea for 13 months. Afterward, he returned to Germany, later deploying for the first time to South Vietnam and again in 1971. Eventually returning to Frankfurt, he retired there as a first sergeant after nearly 30 years of being a Soldier and earning the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Miguel remained in Germany after hanging up his uniform. He moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to work at the Armed Forces Recreation Center, beginning a 40-year career as a federal civilian. In 1977, he became a courier for the AFRC. Ten years later, he elevated to supervisory courier for the Garmisch, Chiemsee and Berchtesgaden recreation areas. Now 90, Miguel retired as a regular employee in 2010, but continues in a flex position as a courier with the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort.
Col. James Love, chief of staff for IMCOM's G-9 directorate, presented retired 1st Sgt. Paulino Miguel with a 70-year service award at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort before family, friends and co-workers. Asked about the best memory of his long military and civilian career, Miguel said: "Working for Gen. (Douglas) McArthur. I was his personal aide when he was in Japan, driving him around and taking care of his family. When he made his invasion at Inchon, I was there." Miguel, a native of Hawaii and nicknamed Pineapple, joined the Army in February 1945. Initially assigned to his home state for

"It's great having him on staff," said Clesson Allman, general manager of ELR. "The young kids love him. When my own kids visited a couple months ago, they told me 'Gee, we just met the coolest guy'; they were talking about Pineapple." "I'm lucky to do what I do at my age," Allman added. "I'll be lucky to be around when I reach his age. He's an institution." After recognizing Miguel, Love noted he had presented many federal service awards, "but I've never given one for 70 years. I didn't know if we even had one." Love called Miguel "aspirational," adding that "he's the type of guy that someone can look at and say, 'hey, I can serve my country for 70 years, too.' Website tips and tricks The U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria website, www.bavaria.army. mil, has received nearly 1 million views since its inception one year ago. Nearly half those views have come on mobile devices — the site is responsive after all — and most people visit the site to view the Community Calendar, read the Bavarian News, check the phonebook and visit the housing page, according to Google Analytics. Despite these promising numbers, we want to reach a greater audience within the USAG Bavaria — which includes communities in Garmisch, Grafenowehr, Hohenfels and Vilseck. The site and its sister social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, offer the info you need to live comfortably within Bavaria. Here are a tips and tricks to make the site more useful to you.

1. The site brings together the communities of Garmisch, Grafenowehr, Hohenfels and Vilseck. U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr was redesignated as U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria in 2013. USAG Bavaria now overseas Army installations in Grafenwoehr (Tower Barracks), Vilseck (Rose Barracks), Hohenfels (Hohenfels Training Area) and Garmisch (Artillery Kasern and Sheridan Barracks). The website services all these installations and communities. The phone book provides a color-coded listing of all offices. Each directorate page includes office hours and contact information for each of USAG Bavaria’s installations. Plus, the Community Calendar tracks events in Garmisch, Grafenowehr, Hohenfels and Vilseck
in 2014, according to CNN. And the Pew Research Center reported this year that “As of May 2013, 63% of adult cell owners use their phones to go online.” As a result, we’ve built an entirely responsive design for our site using a Bootstrap framework pioneered by government websites at WhiteHouse.gov, USA.gov and Medicare.gov. What is responsive design? It means that our site is accessible on mobile phones, tablets and any desktop screen. 3. Easy to navigate—just use the A-Z index or the search bar. We built the website using a simple design and navigation tools that actually work. The A-Z index is located at the top of every page of the website. Or click the Army star to take you back to the home page. The search bar at the top right—or in the top middle for mobile devices—searches everything on the site and news pages. To keep things simple, everything you should ever need should be front, center on the homepage. This site is organized based on what you thought were the greatest needs in the community. What you think is important is “bottom line up front,” or BLUF. 4. The USAG Bavaria Community Calendar is your new best friend. The Community Calendar is situated along the top of every page on the website. It’s broken down into eight different categories: •

Here’s the trick. All devices, computers and operating systems offer a feature to quickly find text on a page. Open the Find bar. On Windows, click Ctrl F. For Mac, click Cmd F. Then, type the text.

5. Search events in the Community Calendar. Visit the calendar. Click the “Search” button on the top left. Search a key word. You can even narrow your search down by calendar categories or date range. Also, use the “Select Location” dropdown—top, middle—to narrow your search down to installation, either Garmisch, Grafenowehr, Hohenfels and Vilseck. Then hit ‘Go!” So, for example, if you just want to see what’s happening in Garmisch, select Garmisch from the drop down menu. Also click the MWR: Gamisch calendar. 6. Share, print or download events from the Community Calendar to your personal calendar. Click on any event in the calendar. A pop-up appears giving you details on the event. You also have the option to email, print, post to Facebook, tweet or download to your personal calendar, such as a Google calendar or your government Microsoft Outlook calendar. 7. Download Community Calendar events to your Microsoft Outlook calendar. Click on any event in the calendar. Click the download icon and open with Microsoft Outlook. Save the event to your calendar. Voila! 8. Add events to the Community Calendar. Managers, directors and community leaders should publicize your events using the Community Calendar. It’s easy. Follow these steps: •

Go to bavaria.army.mil. Situated along the top of every page is the Community Calendar, which is broken into nine categories. Select the category that suits your event best. Click “Suggest Event” button located on the calendar (see top left). Fill out Event, Location and Description & Images sections (please no images). This is the quickest and surest way to get your events uploaded. The PAO staff will be notified and will review and approve quickly. This gives PAO staff visibility on what events need publicity and coverage on all media, to include Facebook, Twitter, website and marquees.
Plus, the Twitter feed in the right column pushes out 24/7 news affecting the USAG Bavaria community. 10. Use your device’s Find function to quickly find numbers in the phonebook. No single method of organization could satisfy everyone using the phonebook. Who would know, for example, that the Passport Office is categorized under Military Personnel Division?
For example, if you’re looking for the phone number to the passport office, go to www.bavaria.army.mil/phonebook, click Ctrl/Cmd F, type “passport” and hit Enter. Voila! There’s your phone number.

The school was founded in Munich in 1949 and therefore carries the “Münchner Kindl,” the figure in the coat of arms of the city of Munich, in its crest. In 1958, the NCO Academy moved to Flint Kaserne in Bad Tölz and to Grafenwoehr in 1990. The desk of the legendary U.S. General George S. Patton can be seen in the headquarters’ building of the NCO Academy at Camp Normandy. Desk, chair and carpet came from La Rochefoucauld palace in France. Erwin Rommel, famous general field marshal of the German Wehrmacht, once sat at this desk. He is also known in military history as the “Desert Fox.” The desk, annexed and used by General Patton, was previously located in Patton’s headquarters in Bad Tölz. Later, the desk was used by the commanders of the NCO Academy.
About the book: “Grafenwoehr Training Area, Yesterday - Today” is the title of the bi-lingual book written by Reserve Sergeant Major Gerald Morgenstern. Cranes on the training area Grafenwoehr, Germany – Thanks to the consistent work of the Federal Forest Office, the environmental office and the military, Grafenwoehr Training Area has become a treasure chest, featuring a unique biodiversity and providing a home to endangered species. Apart from the known resettlement of white-tailed eagles and ospreys, the gradual ecesis of cranes was also successful over the past decade.
Dr. Miriam Hansbauer is a biologist and board member of Crane Conservation Germany (Kranichschutz Deutschland) and responsible for Bavaria. The goal of the organization is to preserve and restore breeding and resting areas and, thus, contribute to the international protection of cranes. In Bavaria, the focus currently lies on documenting the development of breeding pairs. Cranes are considered indicators for natureoriented and preferably undisturbed breeding areas. In July, Hansbauer visited the Federal Forest Office Grafenwoehr to get a first-hand look at the development of this year’s population. During the morning excursion on Grafenwoehr Training Area with district forester Frank Gerstenmeier, she was able to observe three known breeding pairs with their lively six squabs and many young cranes from last year’s breeding success. Experts have confirmed the presence of a crane population in the Northern Oberpfalz region and especially on the training area. The latter has since become one of the most significant in Bavaria. The nature-oriented design and preservation of wetlands and swamps provides the crane with a diverse and mostly undisturbed breeding areas. As a result, the crane population increased from one breeding pair in 2005 to six pairs in 2016. All breed regularly. If you add up the crane families and the cranes that are not breeding, there are currently more than thirty cranes on the training area.

(djd). Back pain is common but not necessarily caused by hardening of the muscles. Often, back pain is caused by the physical decline of the spine. Sports medicine specialist Andrew Lichtenthal explains how you can keep your back strong and resilient. Which type of abrasion causes back problems? Often, it is caused by arthrosis. Research has shown that 50 percent of all 30-year-olds show first lesions of the cartilage. At the spine, the intervertebral disks, which are located between the vertebral body and serve as protective shock absorbers, and the vertebral joints degenerate. Lack of exercise, false strain or too much strain, injuries, obesity or age-related abrasion can lead to arthrosis of the spine. What exactly happens? As a result, more cartilage is degraded than built. During that process, mostly collagen, which is an important nutrient for car-
tilage, is destroyed. If collagen is missing, the cartilage loses its stability and structure, sustains fissures. Can production of collagen in the joints be actively stimulated? Yes, nutrition plays a n important rule. Especially stressed joint cartilage needs so-called collagen peptides. Those are proteins from which new, protective collagen can be built. Our body does not produce enough of it. Therefore, I advise my patients to consume liquid collagen with anti-inflammatory rosehip extract. What else can be done? Conservative therapies will help you to be free of pain and mobile again such as a consistent pain therapy, physical therapy and intensive physiotherapy. Because of the exercise, the joint cartilage receives sufficient nutrients. Additionally, it trains the muscles which protect and stabilize our joints.

A zinc deficiency can lower your body’s defenses Such a program includes a diet rich in vitamins and fiber, enough sleep, fresh air and regular exercise, such as walking. If you go to the sauna afterwards, take alternating baths, or shower cold, you’ll provide your body with some extra training units. You should also ensure that your body receives enough zinc because it is an indispensable helper of the immune system and protects the mucous membranes. A deficiency lowers your body’s defenses and occurs quickly when being ill or suffering from stress, or when this trace element is not properly absorbed by the stomach and intestinal tract. An unbalanced diet can also lead to a zinc deficiency. A nutritional supplement, available at the pharmacy, such as Zinkorot 25 can compensate for that. It contains a combination of zinc and a vitamin-like substance called orotic acid, is well-tolerated and well-absorbed by the body. Together with a sufficiently high dosage, this is an important prerequisite for zinc reaching the important parts of the body such as the mucous membranes in an effective concentration. Flush away viruses Frequently washing and disinfecting your hands is easy and very effective. That way, viruses who are often transferred when shaking hands, have no chance of spreading. Important: All yoga poses start and end in a gentle way. That increases the ability to concentrate and experience one’s body. The right way of breathing is essential when doing yoga exercises. "If all exercises are done consistent with your breathing rhythm, a harmonious flow of breathing and exercise is created, providing the opportunity to gently go deeper," says yoga coach Sylvia Ritter.

An accident can happen quickly when the windshield wipers are worn, causing streaks and poor visibility. “Better safe than sorry. It’s better to adjust your driving habits to the dangers of the wet and cold season,” says Martin Blömer of the online portal Ratgeberzentrale.de. Being able to rely on technology is equally important. “When the days get shorter, good visibility and being seen by others, dependable starting and safe breaking play an important role.” Experts prepare your vehicle Your first stop regarding safety should be your auto repair shop. Many repair shops participate in a Germany-wide campaign and offer free light checks, including a check of the windshield wipers. It is recommended to combine that with a vehicle check to prepare your car for fall and winter. A mechanic will check your battery, brakes, engine and other components. If deficiencies are found, they can quickly be corrected. That way, many breakdowns, which often occur after very frosty nights, can be prevented. A light check saves you from police checks If your vehicle passes the light check, a sticker reading "LichtTest 2016" (Light Check 2016) will be put on your windshield. This will save you from being checked by the police who often conduct light checks in fall and winter. Usually, vehicles with a sticker are being waved through. Therefore, a short stop at your auto repair shop can save you valuable time in the end.

Drively safely when there is frost in the ground "Winter tires are not only the better choice when there is frost," says Klaus Engelhart, press spokesperson of tire manufacturer Continental. While the rubber mix of summer tires is optimized for grip and little abrasion in warm weather, winter tires focus on flexibility when the temperatures are low. Summer tires already lose elasticity and grip when temperature drop below seven degrees centigrade. In contrast, the rubber mix of winter tires is developed to ensure grip even if temperature fall below zero degrees centigrade. Check your tire tread pattern in due time If you do not want to be surprised by the first cold days and nights, it’s best to have your winter tires checked by your tire dealer in early October. Risky behavior Drivers who refuse to use their turn signal and spontaneously turn are a danger to themselves and others (djd). The importance of using the turn signal when driving is often underestimated although it is often the only way to inform other road users in time of one’s intent to change lanes or make a turn. "Those who do not use their turn signals out of carelessness or laziness endanger the life and health of other road users,“ says Torsten Sauer, chief, product management vehicles of HDI Insurance. By law, every change of lanes must be indicated by using the turn signal. That applies to overtaking a vehicle or a stationary traffic obstruction. Using the turn signal is especially important when exiting or entering an Autobahn or expressway. Additionally, a turn signal must be used to indicate the intent

to make a turn to other road users. That also applies when driving on a bending priority road or when exiting a traffic circle. When entering a traffic circle, however, the turn signal my not be used. Not applying your turn signal can become very expensive if you get involved in an accident. "If a driver causes an accident because he did not use his turn signal, he will be liable for the damages," says HDI vehicle expert Sauer. While your vehicle liability insurance will pay for the damages caused to other vehicles, you will need comprehensive coverage to pay for the damages to your own vehicle. It goes without saying that your insurance premium will increase as a result of the accident.

The broad range extends from efficient and comfortable to extremely sporty by way of modifying key parameters such as throttle response, transmission shift points, suspension stiffness and steering feel. Independent of the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes, the driver has the option of pressing the "M" button to switch to a manualshifting mode, in which gearshifts are executed through use of the steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes "Sport" and "Sport+" are even more strongly configured for driving dynamics in the GLC43 Coupe than in the series-production models thanks to the more agile and direct accelerator characteristics, sporty gear changes with reduced shift times, double-declutching function and cylinder shut-off. An increased idle speed also facilitates improved acceleration from a standstill. In order to increase efficiency, ECO start/stop and a "sailing" function helps to reduce fuel consumption when in "Eco" mode:
when the driver releases the accelerator in a speed range between 37 and 99 mph, the clutch is disengaged and the engine is decoupled from the powertrain and the car's engine speed is reduced to idle. "Comfort" mode provides for particularly enjoyable driving. To ensure maximum possible driving safety in this mode, spring and damper forces are instantaneously adjusted in case of a sudden evasive maneuver. Sporty and distinctive: the exterior design The front view of the GLC43 Coupe reveals its independent character with the chrome-tipped diamond-block radiator grille, a louver in high-gloss black with a high-gloss chrome insert and AMG lettering. The distinctive air intakes in the AMG front bumper feature fins in silver chrome. Down below, a silver chrome front splitter ensures an optimal flow of air to the cooling modules. Compared with the GLC43 SUV, the A-pillar features a flatter slope angle. The squat greenhouse blends in seamlessly with the side of the vehicle to emphasize the coupe silhouette. The interplay between high beltline and wide shoulders results in proportions that lend the GLC Coupe its dynamic looks. High-gloss black-painted, high-sheen 20-inch AMG multispoke light-alloy wheels dominate the side view. The bottom line is 302 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque plus fuel economy estimates of 22 mpg city, 30 highway and 25 combined.

Smaller “steps” between the gears as the vehicle accelerates allow the transmission to shift quicker, with almost imperceptible upshifts. The 8L45 eight-speed also has a wider 7.0 gear ratio that enables a numerically higher first gear ratio — helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering — and numerically lower overdrive ratios that reduce engine rpm on the highway. A lower engine speed has two benefits: It can reduce fuel consumption to enhance efficiency and it reduces engine noise for a quieter cabin. The new powertrain supports a 7,000-pound max trailering rating that is second in the segment only to the Canyon’s available 2.8L Duramax diesel, which is rated at 7,700 pounds.

What are the reasons for tearing eyes and discharge with dogs Classically, it’s the white dog breeds such as poodles, WestHighland terriers, Bichon Frise, Maltese, Bolonka, Papillion, Havanese, Jack Russel, Shi Tzu, Pekinese or Yorkshire terrier and many more that suffer from tearing eyes. The coat discolors and the owner stressed out. However, these dogs surely aren’t as sad as they look, on the contrary, do not seem to suffer from their condition. Brown tear clots are caused when tears and other fluids, such as saliva, oxidize, developing a brown colorant which discolors a white coat. However, to cause that, tear fluid has to flow out of the inner corner of the eye rather than through its regular, physiological pathway, the tear ducts. They have a hole at the upper and lower lid that empties into short ducts which combine, ending at the nostrils - a drainage system, so to speak, for tears.
If these ducts do not fulfill their function, overflow, tearing and tear stains are the results. Ducts can be obstructed, grown together, too narrow or even anatomically missing. Additionally, the holes may be missing, or anatomically so small that the fluid finds its way through the inner corner of the eye and into the coat. Another cause can be an increased production of tear fluid. That can be the case when the eyes are irritated by wind, open car windows, fans, air conditioning, cold weather, dust, or painful eye injuries. A reflex of the nerves then leads to an increased production of tear fluid. The eye then starts producing more tear fluid to get rid of the irritation, or foreign object by flushing it out. However, the tear

duct can only hold a limited amount of fluid. Even if the duct is unobstructed, a large production of tear fluid can cause overflow. This can have many reasons and you need to see your veterinarian so he can look for the cause. How do I differentiate between tear fluid and discharge? It is important not to mistake tear fluid for discharge. Discharge can be caused by a disease and when untreated, can have serious consequences for your dog. If you notice one of the following symptoms, you should see your veterinarian immediately: • Yellowish-greenish, thick discharge • Watery discharge • Blood or dark-red discharge • Bloody discharge is often misidentified as tear stains. If you are unsure, better see and ask your veterinarian.

There are many miracle cures that are very harmful when used. They include bleaching agents for the eyes, or tear stone removers. They cost a lot of many but do not help your animal. Cutting the coat around your dog’s eyes makes it easier to clean the area and improves the looks of your dog. Ask your veterinarian or groomer. Do not do anything yourself because most dogs do not like to have their facial hair cut (fear). Additionally, you could slip and severely injure your dog.
Eye care Eyes should be cared for daily. Normally, all you need is a lint-free cloth and lukewarm water. Do not use soap or shampoo! Wet the cloth and carefully wipe the dog’s eyes from the outside in. Dried tear fluid can clot in the corner of the eye and sometimes are hard to remove. Soak the cloth with more water and wet the clot. After a few minutes, use a clean, wet cloth to remove it. Caring for tearing eyes Wash the eyes and area around the eyes with lukewarm water every morning. Important: Do not use any soap or shampoo! After washing, dry the coat with a soft, dry cloth.
Some breeds, such as also develop redness at the flews, paws or other areas of the body. This redness is mainly a result of a lot of contact with saliva. Often, red skin is also a result of years of overbreeding. This has led to skin changes with some breeds. If you ae not 100% sure, you should see your veterinarian. Skin alterations and redness can also be a sign of allergies or diseases. Recognize diseases Check for changes during daily eye care. Sudden and profuse redness, eyes stuck shut are not normal. They can be signs of pink eye. Opacity and injuries are also alarming signs and should definitely be shown to a veterinarian. Important: • Unobstructed view! The Bohemian tradition of bathing in beer is an abberent path toward health and wellness.
Bathe in beer in the Czech Republic CHODOVA PLANA, Czech Republic -- While German culture is bathed in mores of beer, their neighbors to the east have taken it one step further -- by literally bathing themselves in beer. Tucked away in the Bohemian town of Chodova Plana is a wellness center that would make Homer Simpson drool. Stainless steel tubs are filled to the brim with a special mixture of mineral water and bathing beer -- a substance of active beer yeast, hops and a mixture of dehydrated herbs -- concocted by the head brewer of the Chodovar Brewery. Set at a temperature of around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, bathers are immersed in a restorative enterprise that is said to activate circulation, rejuvenate skin and relax the mind.

As an added bonus, a glass of nonpasteurized Chodovar beer is served during the process, which the brewery claims to increase the outcome of the bath by harmonizing blood pressure, aiding in digestion and enhancing the relaxation experience. (Prost!) After 20 minutes, dripping bathers are led to a quiet room, reposed on a bed and swaddled in a fleece quilt. Music plays softly under the dim lighting, prompting soft snores from the pampered participants. The aroma of beer permeates off the skin during the hourlong procedure. The Dutch city does not only feature town canals, it also demonstrates how chilled and creative urban life can be. The best way to discover Amsterdam is by bike and with a lot of stops at museums, cafés, restaurants and design stores. How to get to Amsterdam Flights to Amsterdam take off daily from the airports in Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Frankfurt. From Schiphol airport it’s only a 25-minute ride to downtown by train, bus or taxi (40 Euro). The main train station (Central Station) is located downtown. Daily ICE-train connections go to Cologne, Frankfurt and Oberhausen; night trains from Berlin or Munich arrive early in the morning. Amsterdam sights Amsterdam’s downtown are is relatively small. Therefore, you do not have to use public transportation to get around, it’s better and nicer to simply take a bike, or Fiets (Editor’s note: Pronounced feets), as the Dutch call it. You can rent a bike for a low fee, for example at Mac Bike (Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat 116). Not quite a travel secret but too good not to mention it: A ride along the town canals. If you are interested in history, you should definitely visit the Anne Frank-House (Prinsengrahct 267) and stop at the Resistance Museum (Plantage Kerklaan 61a). Rijksmuseum Amsterdam The cultural highlight of every visit is the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (www.rijksmuseum.nl). It is THE museum in Amsterdam, comparable to the Louvre in Paris or the MoMA in New York. The most important Dutch painters, like Vermeer, Franz Hals and Rembrandt can be viewed there. So if you’re in town, you should not miss Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. Shopping in Amsterdam If you want to go shopping, stroll through Jordaan, one of Amsterdam’s old, traditional districts that has turned into a hip part of town during the past years. The many vintage stores offer great clothes for a good price, for example "Zipper" (www. zipperstore.nl). Going out in Amsterdam If you want to party in Amsterdam, go to the areas around Museumsplein and Leidseplein. You will find a lot of cool bars and clubs there. Good clubs to visit are "Clup up" (www.clubup.nl) which features a great view of the Leidseplein from its balcony, or "Sugarfactory" (www.sugarfactory.nl) on Sunday when live jazz is mixed with funk and Hip Hop there. "Paradiso" (www. paradiso.nl), on the other hand, is best on Thursdays when it’s "Noodlanding" party which features Indie- and rock music mixed with all kinds of other music styles. The miracle began 500 AD when the Venetes, who lived on the mainland, fled from the Huns and Langobards into the lagoon. Gradually and shortly after 800 AD, they connected dozens of small islands with bridges, driving in millions of timber piles into the swampy ground, creating the 7.5 square kilometer-city area we know today with its approximately 3,000 alleys and 100 squares, about 150 waterways and more than 400 bridges.. It’s the view from the church tower that provides newcomers with an immediate idea of the uniqueness of the location and set-up of the city. From the campanile of the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore, for example, you have an excellent view of the city’s silhouette. In the east, you can see the huge area of the arsenal, the shipyard. The green of the city park Giardini Pubblici shines a bit farther east, adjacent to the Biennale exhibition grounds. In the west, you can see the concrete jungle of the parking garages and train station emerging from the sea of red roofs. And in the far distance, the smoke stacks of the industrial areas of Marghera and Mestre rise into the smoggy sky. Situated around the historic center which consists of six districts (Italian: sestieri), are the dozens of islands that each still serve a specific social purpose such as the cemetery island San Michele, the vegetable islands Sant'Erasmo and Le Vignole. Not to forget the glassblower’s island of Murano, the old bishop’s see Torcello, and in-between Burano, the refuge of the lace embroiders, and on the southern horizon the Lido, the small sand lobe between the Laguna and the open sea. The biological state of the city is contradictory as well. It is no secret that Venice is aging - urbanistically and demographically: Its ground sank by 10 cm within 20 years and its building structures crumble, unsettled by the engines of the constantly increasing number of gigantic cruise ships. Nobody who arrives in the Laguna city sees this wonder of the world for the first time: It has been described, sung about. shown on photos and in movies so that it has long become a part of Europe’s collective consciousness. Surrounded by water, the palaces along the waterways look as surreally sparkling and decayed as shown in the opulent coffee-table books and travel catalogs. Piazza San Marco and the cathedral of the same name indeed look as sophisticated and immaculate as if they were a glamorous movie-set. And the panorama from the waterfront in front of the Dogal Palace, across the water towards San Giorgio and Giudecca looks exactly like the panorama painted by Canaletto.

10 useful tips for an unforgettable trip to Venice 1. Public transportation We do not recommend to travel to Venice by car because a parking ticket costs about 30€ per day. You cannot travel by car in Venice anyway due to the many waterways and must use public transportation, including busses and boats. Since not every stop has a ticket vending machine, just ask the personnel. If you get caught without a ticket, you will have to pay a hefty fine (as of May 2014, 40€). If you plan to spend several hours in Venice, it’s best to buy a one-day or multiple day-ticket. That way, you do not have to keep an eye on the time limits when changing vehicles. The shortest time unit for a ticket is 60 minutes (cost 7€) but that is not enough if you wish to make several stops in one day. A one-day ticket is cheaper. Helpful information about ticket prices, routes and schedules can be found on http://actv.avmspa.it/en Tip: When you wait at a bus stop and your bus approaches, stretch out your arm into the street to signal the bus to stop. If you don’t do that, it won’t stop. 2. How to take the best photos There are a lot to photo motifs in Venice – some more, some less famous. The best way to take a great photo of them is to take a tour on liner 1. During the 45-minute trip, the boat slowly
drives down Canal Grande, passing by Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia train station, San Marco and the Lido. Getting on and off at every stop is possible with the respective ticket. Since there are only a few outside seats on liners and they are in very high demand, you should travel to one of the terminal stops and then get on the next boat. That way, you stand a chance to get one of the popular seats. Then you can even take your photos from a comfortable seat. 3. Low-cost hotels Hotels and guesthouses in Venice are very expensive and difficult to book due to the large number of tourists. It is much cheaper to stay on the Lido or in the neighboring town of Sotto Marina. 4. Interesting neighboring towns If you love Venice, you should not miss Chioggia (also known as “Little Venice.”) From Venice, Chioggia can easily be reached by bus and a visit is definitely worth your while. Here, visitors can rest and recuperate. Hardly a tourist comes here and, therefore, you can even enjoy Italian flair here on the weekend without have to walk along over-crowded streets. A visit to the fish market in Chioggia is a must. Fishermen sell their fresh catch here the old-fashioned way. Bavarian Times | 58
5. Bargains, jewelry and souvenirs You will not find mementos, souvenirs and bargains on the waterside at the large, colorful and inviting market booths but in the narrow alleys and small stores. Keep your eyes open, put on a friendly smile and ask the salesmen for help.
7. Swimming in Venice You can best enjoy the refreshing Mediterranean Sea at the Lido di Venezia. Although most beaches are owned by hotels and the local public baths, for a small fee, you can spend a few cool hours there with a sun lounger, parasol and a changing cabin.
6. A very special meal Do you love eating and seafood? Then take the chance and book a boat ride to the fish restaurant “Ai Casoni,” which is located on a platform in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Chioggia. Fish is caught fresh here and prepared the regional way.
8. Public restrooms in Venice There are several public restrooms in Venice. They can easily be found by following the signs on the houses and sometimes on the pavement. One visit costs 1.50€. However, you can by a ticket for multiple use in advance at VeneziaUnica Tickets. A “Daily Toilet Card” costs 1€, a “One Week Toilet Card” 5€. By doing that you save money and don’t have to pay attention to having the correct change when needed. 9. When to best enjoy Venice Italians are smart and take their breaks during the hot lunch hours. Tourists are not that smart which is why Venice gets very crowded later in the morning. Surprisingly, they disappear in the early evening, possibly also caused by the questionable enjoyment of the midday sun. Now, Venice belongs to the Venetians again. So if you want to enjoy the city in a quiet setting, visit Venice early in the morning or late in the afternoon. 10. Riding on a gondola Riding a gondola is an integral of visiting Venice but you should always negotiate the price in advance. Since the popular Venice gondola rides cost about 80€ and, thus, put quite a hole in your vacation budget, you should also book them online in advance. The Tourism Office offers rides for as little as 40€.

The Reichstag building on Platz der Republik in Berlin has been the seat of the German parliament since 1999. Getting to know Berlin by boat A boat trip is a typical tourist activity? Who cares! The Spree river does indeed run through the center of Berlin and is ideal to comfortably see some of its sights. One-hour boat tours start several times a day at the main train station which take you past the Berlin Cathedral, Old National Gallery, Reichstag building, Pergamon Museum, TV tower and other sights of the capital. The advantage when taking the boat is that you have a panoramic view, can lean back and relax while listening to the birds’ twitter rather than traffic noise.

Things you didn’t know: How to tie a Dirndl bow: Left or right? Whenever women put on a dirndl, the question comes up on which side to tie the bow and its meaning. If you do not know anything about the Bavarian tradition of tying, you might end up wearing it on the wrong side. Dirndl Bow - Worn LEFT There’s a wonderful rule of thumb: “Bow left brings luck!" This means that the wearer of the Dirndl is single and not in a relationship. Flirting is allowed. Be afraid! Halloween season is here! Autumn time has arrived; the days are getting shorter and the nights colder. The farmers are preparing their fields for the upcoming winter time and my husband and I are preparing our house for our favorite Holiday of the year, Halloween, which takes place every year on October 31. A we are preparing for this holiday and stand in our basement between a card board coffins, anatomical Skeletons and several storage boxes full of decoration items like furry spiders, Jack O’Lanterns, spooky looking figurines and many other creepy things, which would give little children and adults alike goose bumps, we’re talking about how it all started. So, why do Americans celebrate Halloween? What is it about? What are the facts and fictions surrounding this date? Halloween is steeped in tradition and history About 2000 years ago, the Celtics celebrated Samhain ("Sawan"), the Celtic New Year, on the last day of October. Samhain was the name of the God of Death and on this day he allowed the dead souls to visit their homes they used to live in. Of course, the Celtics were scared of this occasion and gathered in a field, surrounded by bonfires and wearing ghoulish outfits to keep the evil spirits away, which might roam the night as well.

Around 800 A.D. Celtic religion was replaced with Christianity. The Christian church declared November 1st as” All Saints Day” to honor the known and unknown Saints, but still the people carried on their ancient customs from Samhain rituals and so the evening before All Saints Day/ All Hollows Day, October 31st became known as All Hallows Eve. Eventually people lost their believes in the supernatural, All Hollows Day turned into Halloween and Irish Immigrants brought those Halloween traditions to America. “Trick or Treat” Although Trick or Treat is known as an American tradition, its origin developed in Europe. November 2nd is the “All Souls Day” and in the 10th century poor Christians walked in costumes or mummed from house to house asking for “Soul Cakes”. Soul Cakes were little spiced cakes with currants baked into it, in remembrance of the dead. In exchange they offered prayers for those dead souls. The Soulers dressed up to honor the dead, but also to keep the evil spirit away, because the spirit will
never haunt one of their own. In some areas Soul Cakes were set outside as a gift to the spirits of the dead. To make a long story short: eventually mummed Soul Caking turned into “Trick or Treating” in scary costumes and Soul Cakes were replaced by candy. And why do we place Pumpkins outside? A carved and hallowed pumpkin is usually called “Jack O’Lantern”, originally Jack was not an Pumpkin though. Jack was an Irish man named “Stingy Jack”. He was a miserable, lazy farmer which tricked everyone including the devil. The legend tells that Stingy Jack climbed up an apple tree, once the devil climbed it up to pick a piece of fruit, Jack jumped down and carved crosses into the bark of the tree, of course the devil couldn’t leave the tree anymore. They came to an agreement that if the devil doesn’t take Jack’s soul after his death, Jack would let him down. Several years later Jack died of old age, but he couldn’t go to heaven, because he was too cruel in his life, but he couldn’t go to hell either, because the devil kept his promise not to take his soul. Now Jack was scared, he had nowhere to go, but to wander forever in the darkness between heaven and hell. He wanted to leave, so the devil gave him an ember from the flames of hell, to light his way. Jack placed the ember in a hollowed out turnip and from that on he roamed the earth with his “Jack O’Lantern”. So on All Hallows eve the Irish hollowed out Turnips and other beets, placed a light inside to keep the evil spirits like Jack Stingy away, but when the Immigrants arrived in the US they discovered that Pumpkins are way bigger and easier to hollow out than beets. As for us, we’re looking forward to decorate our house and yard, carving spooky Jack O’Lanterns, visiting Haunted Houses, making delicious food goodies like roasted pumpkin seeds and pumpkin pie, getting prepared for the Trick or Treating and our yearly Halloween party with friends and family. There are many ways to celebrate this fascinating holiday, so look into it, I’m sure you will discover some great ideas and maybe you get contaminated with the “Halloween virus” like us. Pumpkins can be used in many ways The pumpkin, also called cucurbit, is one of the oldest cultivated plants of the civilized world. It has its origin in Central and South America and has served man as food for almost 8,000 years. Spanish conquerors brought the plant to Europe in the 15th century. Hokkaido pumpkins have a firm pulp that is especially suitable for soups. Even the skin of these pumpkins can be used. Additionally, it does not take long to prepare that dish.

Ingredients for four persons: • 1 Hokkaido pumpkin (about 1,000 grams) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 3 onions • 1 liter vegetable broth • 2 carrots • 2 potatoes • 200 grams cream • Salt, pepper, tabasco
Preparation: Heat the olive oil in a cooking pot, peel the onions and cut them in large pieces. Glaze them in the hot oil. Peel and dice the carrots and put them in the pot as well. Let is simmer. Remove the core of the pumpkin, cut it in large dice, add it to the onions and carrots and braise it lightly. Pour hot broth over it. Peel the potatoes, cut them and put them into the broth. let everything simmer until it is soft. Add the cream. Puree the soup and season it with salt and pepper. If you like it hot, add tabasco. Pour the soup on a plate and decorate it with balsamic cream. Sprinkle parsley on top. Enjoy! If you like it sweet, you can also use a Hokkaido pumpkin to bake a cake. If you prefer to make scary, yet beautiful figures from a pumpkin, you have to wait a little longer because Halloween is on October 31. Add about twelve centiliters of tomato juice and stir it. “You can use candy to decorate it,” says Angelika Wiesgen-Pick, Chairwoman of the Federal Association of the German Spirits Industry and Importers e. V. (BSI). "On Halloween, small pumpkins and other unusual ideas are popular, and fruit gummies do not limit your fantasy in any way."
