Originally opened as a pop-up store, Merivale boutique Copper + Pink moved into a larger, more permanent space in mid-2016. Owner Paula Grant, a photographer and former photography teacher, grew up in and around shops owned by her parents, so running a boutique was a natural progression.

Colourful and textural homewares, lighting, furniture, plant pots and a ‘thinking swing’ give the store a colourful, quirky energy.

Paula has recently added a home staging service to the Copper + Pink brand. She is also about to launch a furniture line with a friend, with products to be made in Indonesia. The globetrotting creative says she has always scouted for unique homewares while travelling.

The shop counter was crafted by a local carpenter using post-earthquake demolition materials. Paula’s photographs are for sale in the store alongside iconic prints by Slim Aarons and designs by Brent Rosenberg.

Plants and an array of graphic pots and plant holders lend a lived-in feel to the large space.

“I get my energy from being outside among trees and in the water, so it is important for me to bring the outside in,” says Paula. “Plants evoke a sense of life in any space.”

Indoor plants are a trend that is here to stay. Not only are plants good for us, they help to finish off an interior space.

Greenery softens the edges of a room and can be added to any area in your home.

If you are not green-fingered, there is a vast array of imitation plants that look like the real thing and can simply be popped inside a decorative pot. Or, head to the local plant store and invest in some real greenery for your home. Indoor foliage is an easy way to transform your space in a short amount of time for relatively little cost.

2 3 Terrazzo is less classic than marble but more playful than concrete.

One of the breakthrough materials of 2017, terrazzo consists of granite, marble, quartz and glass chips set in concrete. This combination makes for a striking chipped pattern. Traditionally used as flooring, terrazzo is now being made into homeware including bowls, coasters, plant pots, chopping boards and picture frames. Even mugs, phone cases and soft furnishings such as bedlinen are getting the terrazzo treatment. If this playful pattern appeals to you, there are plenty of easy ways to incorporate the texture into your home.

vie Kemp and Sam Holford’s home, nestled in a leafy suburb of South Auckland, immediately strikes the visitor as less of a suburban house and more of a modern castle constructed out of curving brick, dark boards and battens. And the impressions keep coming as you step into an interior that seems to offer both a trip back in time and a glimpse into the future. To call the decor simply ‘eclectic’ is a disservice; Evie’s ability to curate objects transcends randomness or a ‘hope for the best’ approach.

A MODERN HERITAGE

Designed and built in the early 1980s by architectural designer Dave Sharples and his wife, Judy, this home was the perfect canvas for Evie’s intrinsic ability to add colour, pattern and a healthy dose of wow factor. Dave and Judy’s original intention was to occupy the home themselves, but an offer was made before the building was completed and they moved on.

In a twist of fate, the couple re-purchased the home decades later, renovating the interior to fit their original design within a contemporary context. Dave’s distinctive style can be seen around the tree-lined neighbourhood where he has built a number of homes over the years.

BACKGROUND

They say good things take time. This may be true in the case of wine and cheese, but it’s not what you hope for when planning a quick property flip. Take Wellington couple Jessica Godfrey and Sven Wiig. They bought their three-bedroomed 1907 villa in 2003 with the plan of renovating and flicking it for a profit within two years. What actually happened was they started a family (Otto joined them in 2008), took six years to complete the interior, and only finally laid down their paintbrushes last year. Ah, the best-laid plans…

THE ORIGINAL HOUSE

While Jessica was on her OE in 2003, Sven was tasked with finding a home the couple could do up. They were desperate to get into the market while they still could, gunning for a house in central Wellington rather than a remote suburb. With their budget of $240,000, they did find something. It was a northwest-facing villa with a 3.2m stud and hardwood floors (albeit under grotty floor coverings) – but it was in a terrible condition.

“So much needed doing to make it liveable,” says Jessica. “The kitchen was a preserver’s kitchen, with bright yellow floor-to-ceiling cupboards and not one single benchtop. There was a very old sink and an oven from the early 1970s. Our refrigerator had to stand in the middle of the room as there was no space for it.

The house was damp (it wasn’t long before we found out why), every room was painted a different gloomy colour and the bath was falling through the floor.”

PROBLEM The house was extremely run-down and unloved.

The interior was dark and there was no flow between rooms.

SOLUTION The villa was completely overhauled inside and out with most of the work carried out by the homeowners, who had a clear design vision.

The couple removed a wall at the end of the hallway, which not only opened up an area for a dining room, but also allowed light to flow from one end of the house to the other.

Material possession Fabric trends While flooring, paint, lighting and accessories are popular home investments, the power of fabrics to perfectly finish an interior is sometimes underestimated. However, once you start researching fabrics – the many types and the history behind them, the wealth of texture, weight and design, and their sheer versatility – you’re likely to fall in love.

Many interior designers use fabric as their secret weapon because they know that nothing else can create the same effect. Fabrics bring texture and ‘depth’ to a room, adding an extra layer of interest and evoking a feeling of luxurious comfort. Textiles can be neutral and unobtrusive, allowing the focal point in a room to shine, or they can be the star of the show.

While it’s important to choose beautiful fabrics that create the aesthetic you’re after, it’s also vital to make choices that are practical and will suit your lifestyle. This guide is an introduction to decorating with fabrics and the many creative ways they can be used to bring your home to life.

• Pantone recently unveiled ‘Greenery’ as its 2017 Colour of the Year so expect to see palettes drawn from nature being widely used in drapery and soft furnishings.

• Modern tapestry is back in fashion, both in upholstery fabrics and beautiful wall hangings.

The intricate patterns and textures create visual interest and the rich colours echo this season’s trend for jewel tones.

• The desire for traditional textiles remains strong, with ikat fabrics especially in vogue (these involve a technique of binding and dipdyeing yarn before weaving it, creating muted, hazy patterns with a tribal feel).

• People crave human connection so it’s no surprise that we’re still seeing the influence of art and craft. Fabrics featuring painterly effects from watercolours and dreamy landscapes to bold brushstrokes stay on-trend.

• Vibrantly coloured velvets are big for both drapery and upholstery and bring a luxe, elegant look to any interior.

• As organic, muted palettes continue to dominate, the world has once again fallen in love with linen. A linen and polyester blend is also popular for curtains as people seek out more liveable fabrics.

etween managing a household, running a kids’ taxi service, coordinating a laundromat for business shirts and sports gear, and tending my small zoo of rescued animals, plus doing my day job, some days there just ain’t much time to get dinner sorted.

When I need to slap up some food in a flash I turn to some trusted, fast and tasty recipes that I know will get the job done.

Here are some of my favourites, which are particularly good at this time of year.

FOOD

HARVEST PASTA WITH BLISTERED TOMATOES & SMOKY BREADCRUMBS SERVES 4

At this time of year, when you get to the end of a long school or work day, a quick plate of filling, silky, ribbony pasta doesn’t go amiss. My crew love this dish with its crunchy sprinkling of garlicky, smoky breadcrumbs. Using fresh lasagne sheets sliced into wide strips, which cook in no time, makes this meal super-quick to prepare – especially if you are using pre-made crumbs. I always make double the quantity of smoky breadcrumbs and keep the excess in an airtight jar in the fridge (they last for a week), along with a few packets of fresh pasta – very handy for spontaneous crowd-feeding.

INGREDIENTS 3 cups crusty, day-old bread, torn into chunks 1 clove garlic, crushed 3 sprigs flatleaf parsley, plus extra to garnish 1 rasher smoky bacon Olive oil, for drizzling over crumbs and frying 1½-2 cups cherry tomatoes or mixed small heirloom tomatoes (halve or quarter any large ones) 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 tsp raw sugar 400g fresh egg lasagne sheets Extra virgin olive oil, to finish Parmesan shavings (optional) 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C fanbake. Place bread, garlic, parsley and bacon in a food processor and pulse to coarse crumbs.

2 Spread crumbs on a lined baking sheet and

drizzle with 2-3 Tbsp oil. Bake for 5-10 minutes (stir once) until golden and crisp on top.

3 In a large frying pan, fry tomatoes in 2 Tbsp oil over medium heat until starting to soften and blister. Add balsamic and sugar and season to taste. Stir to dissolve sugar then remove pan from heat and set aside.

4 Cut pasta sheets into 2cm-wide ribbons.

Cook in salted, simmering water until al dente.

Drain, add to tomatoes and stir well to coat.

5 Quickly transfer pasta to platter and sprinkle a good handful of crumbs on top.

Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, grate over some parmesan, if desired, and garnish with a few torn parsley leaves. Serve with crusty bread and a green salad.

What garden style are you?

If it’s true that a person’s house says a lot about their personality, what do our gardens reveal about who we are? Gardens can be a sanctuary from the busy world or a party venue for entertaining friends or family. Some of us fill our gardens with plants, water and all things natural, while others prefer minimalist outdoor spaces where plants are the backdrop for man-made art and objects. Take a look at the five popular garden styles we’ve selected and see where your green heart lies.

GARDEN

PRODUCTIVE Vege, kitchen or edible gardens are very much on the rise with younger gardeners, but they never really went away with those over 60. Contemporary productive gardens look more attractive than the traditional types, with the emphasis less on orderly rows and more on diversity of plants, good design, high-quality materials and plenty of bee-attracting flowers. Well-known edible-garden designers include locals Xanthe White and Joanna Hamilton, as well as Australian Jamie Durie. + PROS: Food tastes better fresh from the garden; you know what’s been used to help grow the fruit and veges (ideally few or no chemicals); growing your own food is hugely satisfying; it doesn’t take a lot of space to grow edibles with good planning. + CONS: Can be frustrating as it takes skill to grow many fruit and veges without losing them to pests and diseases; good planning is essential for production all year round; can be labour intensive; productive gardens can look scruffy at certain times of the year.

FORMAL

The formal garden has been around for centuries and certainly isn’t fading from fashion any time soon. Formal gardens beautifully complement contemporary houses with their emphasis on architectural planting. Think hedges, screens and edging plants that soften but also reinforce the built forms. Formal gardens in the 21st century are less about box hedging and more about using natives and plants suited to their environments, albeit in a structured way. Two of the best known designers of contemporary formal gardens in this hemisphere are Australians Paul Bangay and Peter Fudge. ++PROS: Well-designed formal gardens have a harmonious, balanced look that appeals to the neat freak in many of us; they generally look good all year round and are low maintenance. ++CONS: The formal approach doesn’t allow for the happy accidents that nature sometimes presents us with, such as self-seeding flowers.

TRIVET

We created three differently shaped trivets which can be hung from a leather strap. Mark out your desired size and shape on a sheet of pegboard. Cut out with a circular saw or hand saw. Sand back the rough edges and paint with three coats of paint, letting it dry between coats.

Fold a strip of leather and super glue the ends to either side of your shape to make a loop. Glue a layer of grey felt underneath for another layer of heat protection.

IN TRAY

Draw a template onto your pegboard sheet.

We cut a base of 26cm x 35cm, and two sides of 5cm x 35cm (with a diagonal slant on one end), plus a back piece of 26cm x 5cm. Cut them out using a circular saw or hand saw. Sand the rough edges back and, using super glue or wood glue, stick the pieces together. When dry, sand off any bits of glue and paint three coats.

MOODBOARD

Measure out 68cm x 50cm on your sheet of pegboard (or any desired size). Cut with a skill-saw or hand saw. Cut 2 x 48cm pieces and 2 x 66cm pieces of half-round pine rods.

Sand the rough edges. Using wood glue or super glue, stick down the pine pieces to frame your pegboard. Glue on some wooden pegs where desired.

Cut with a jigsaw and sand the edges back. Paint three coats of desired paint, then when dry glue a circular piece of grey felt on the underside. To finish, edge the circles with leather cord using hot glue or super glue. You can also use this method for coasters – just make the circles smaller!
