Edam Bull riding event draws 20 entries By Brenda Pollard Correspondent
Receiving the eighth annual Edam Indoor Rodeo amateur bull rider buckle from Laura Martin is Evan Matchee of Cochin.
This little mutton buster came well prepared with goggles along with the helmet.
The eighth annual amateur bull riding was held Aug. 20, with the CCA indoor rodeo following Aug. 21 and 22. Lisa Blaquiere sang the national anthem while Laura Martin rode a gelding raised from the first Saskatchewan foal crop by herself and her late husband, Bruce. The community lost “Rancher” in December 2014. Laura and Bruce — Painted River Ranch — have been sponsors of the amateur bull riding for the past eight years. Henri Blaquiere and Lisa Blaquiere were the announcers for the evening. Of the 20 riders, only eight managed to stick to the bulls that they pulled. Making it into the short go were Cale Sims of Meota, Cody Hirshe of Whitkow, Evan Matchee of Cochin, Layne Jacobson of St. Walburg, Jesse Smith of North Battleford, Kenyon LaClare of Baljennie, Jamie Maynard of Lloydminster and Nick Petelas of Montreal, Que. Of these eight, four stuck it out and Evan Matchee was the winner of the Painted River Ranch buckle. During the half-time show, the young buckaroos took on the mutton. bull riders of the area. This year there were 12 mutton busters. These little riders were Kaden Black from Whitkow, Maya Macnab from Lloydminster, Vayda McDonald from Edam, Logan Gervais from Turtleford, Jasmin LaClare from Lashburn, Bryar Carr from Vawn, Jaxon Ray from Meota, Kellen Headrick from Unity, Taysia Nasby from Spruce Lake, Riley Bresky from Turtleford, Kiptyn Troesch from Edam and Denver Butterfield from St. Walburg. All of these little ones were winners for even giving it a shot. Winner of the 50/50 draw for the evening was Bob Cole of Edam taking home $575. A bridal shower was held Aug. 3 for August bride-elect, Taimarra Hamel. The basement of the Catholic church was decorated in the bride’s colours of black and pink. The centrepiece was made by her aunt, Mary Anne Corbeil. Hostess Barb Blaquiere introduced the head table: the bride; maid of honour, Shyla Hamel, sister of the bride; bridesmaid, Renee Collins, friend of the bride; and Laurie Hamel, mother of the

bride. Following a couple of games and advice to help the young couple with their marriage, the gifts were opened. Taimarra thanked the ladies for attending and for all the well wishes and invited them all to the wedding. Taimarra married Scott Theisen of the Meota and North Battleford area Aug. 15 in the same church her parents were married in, the Edam Catholic Church. They will be making their home on their acreage in the Edam/ Vawn area where Taimarra works for Hilltop Ventures and Scott works for RacKen. Congratulations to you both and may you have a long and happy marriage. A bridal shower for September bride-elect, Janine Bellanger, was held Aug. 29 at the Legion at 2 p.m. Following a few games, the bride was presented with gifts from the ladies of the community. Seated at the head table with Janine were: her matron of honour, Vicky Dyck, aunt of the bride; Joan Bellanger, mother of the bride; and Rose Matthews, grandmother of the bride. Janine is the daughter of Frank and Joan Bellanger of Edam and will be marrying Nathan Tebay, son of Jim and Sue Tebay of Big Fork, Mont. The happy couple will exchange vows Sept. 19 in Polson, Mont. Janine and Nathan will be making their

Harvest is underway. As one travels about the countryside, there are a few fields that have been harvested, in other fields swathing has been done and in others swathing or straight combining is underway. If the fine weather continues, more combines and swathers will be seen working and harvest will be completed early. Visiting with Lois Pike recently was Doreen Angus of Victoria, B.C., and her daughter Marg Logan of Prince Rupert, B.C. They had quite a trip sightseeing and visiting. Besides visiting in Saskatchewan, they began their trip driving to Portland, Ore. to visit friends and to enjoy the scenery. While here, they were guests at Lois’s cabin at Loon Lake for a few days. A wonderful time was had with some members of Lois’s family coming to visit each day. Following their visit with Lois and family, Doreen and Marg went on to Porcupine Plain to take part in the Logan family reunion. The Pike family was well represented at the
orest Bank Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony held at the Alex Dillabough Centre in North Battleford Aug. 15. Eighteen inductees were honoured. Among the teams inducted was Standard Hill. Kim Gerbig accepted the plaque on their behalf. The Pike family had the biggest showing at the induction ceremony. Although nothing was said in the article about the involvement of those inductees, members of the Pike family certainly did their share in making baseball a memorable part of sports in Waseca, Maidstone, Standard Hill and other areas. They played, coached, umped, kept score and took care of the young people in the junior teams. Many of them played for Standard Hill and, as time went on, played for Standard Hill Old Timers. A few still play with the Standard Hill team when the old timers have a tournament each year

somewhere in the province. Congratulations to the Pikes and the Standard Hill team. Helena Pike spent the weekend of Aug. 21 in Saskatoon, the guest of her grandson, Mark Oddan, his wife, Tracy, and their sons, Carter and Lincoln. Besides enjoying the visit, she attended Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, which this year featured the plays Othello and Much Ado About Nothing. This is always a very interesting event. On reading the article on the Cey Clydesdales in the Aug. 27 Northwest Farmer Rancher, I noted that the Ceys hired professional trainers Brian and Colleen Coleman of Didsbury, Alta. They trained Cey horses for both the Olds show and the Calgary Stampede and for the Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 world show to be held in London, Ont. Brian and Colleen are well known in the world of horses, Brian being a champion teamster who judges draft horses all over the world. Colleen is the daughter of Maureen (Pike) Bexson, formerly of this district. Gully Gus says, “When money speaks, the truth keeps silent!”
