leaps in internet connectivity happening all across the country, but we still have a ways to go. Considering how critical fast, reliable internet access is to our economy, our communities and our lives, we must keep pushing to ensure Canadians from coast-to-coast-tocoast are well connected.”

CIRA developed Canada’s Internet Factbook through an online survey conducted by The Strategic Counsel.

The purpose of CIRA’s research is to identify trends in Canadian internet use. A total of n=2,050 adult Canadian internet users (18+) were surveyed in March 2019, and the sample is proportionate-topopulation for age, province and gender.

Atoskewin Success Centre celebrates

Continued from Page 1 Economy. The concept was for it to be a one-stop shop to help Indigenous people bridge gaps in education and training, so they can be placed into jobs.

The centre soon relocated to share space with the band offices of the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs on 104th Street.

Recently BATC moved to a new location, opening the door to allowing the Atoskewin Success Centre to expand its presence to the entire building.

Renovations were completed Monday. On Tuesday, the centre held its grand opening event.

The celebrations included food and entertainment, a tour of the facility, children’s activities, and an education and training information fair inside.

The centre also held an “I.D. blitz” taking applications for treaty cards,

health cards, birth certificates and social insurance numbers.

Trina Albert, from Sweetgrass First Nation, is one of the directors for Employment and Training.

Albert said BATC and its seven member First Nations backed the renovation project financially, with a view to “make our services better to be delivered for our people.”

Albert said the centre has come a long way to where it is now. Continuing to be important will be its employment and training aspect. Many clients come to Atoskewin Success Centre without having completed Grade 12. Others may not have driver’s licences or proper job certifications. Making sure clients get needed certifications is a key role for the centre.

We make sure that once you get your tickets [and] you’re employed, we keep track of you for six months after, so that you’re getting everything. Everyone has struggles, so if they miss a step on the way going to better their lives, we’re here to help them get back on track.”

Available supports include elders and counsellors, who are there to “make sure every area is covered, so they feel good about themselves when they walk out that door.”

There is an IT program familiarizing people in tech support including Excel and PowerPoint.

Also popular are social work classes, which count towards a degree, and there are other educational programs, as well.

There are some unique features to the expanded facility. One is the inclusion of a family centre to provide daycare services for those clients taking programming at the centre.

“The clients that we provide service to often struggle or are challenged with childcare,” said Kimberly Night, Kiwewin Family Centre coordinator.

She explained clients might make it halfway through the program and then be forced to drop out due to childcare issues.

The family centre was created on the advice of elders. It provides daycare, learning and other activities for children in a traditional Indigenous setting, and is designed to help Indigenous clients to stay in their classes.

Right outside is a natural-space play area, which will be used by the centre

year-round for their landbased learning, including activities such as cooking.

On Tuesday it was put to good use as bannock was being cooked during the noon-hour celebrations.

Also new is a spa and salon, run by Success Centre clients. The idea is for clients to use the service to feel better about themselves and boost their selfconfidence.

The initial decision to move the Atoskewin Success Centre to BATC’s 104th Street location a few years ago made sense, said Night, because “we had all of this building but we didn’t utilize it all.”

The building had formerly housed the RCMP detachment in North Battleford. Even during the time that BATC had offices in the buildings, evidence of its former use as a “cop shop” was noticeable.

Night said her workspace was actually the detachment’s “drunk tank” in its previous life.

It took a team effort to transform the look of the interior to become the Atoskewin Success Centre’s new quarters in the past several months.

Labour for the construction was not hard to find, as the Success Centre turned to their own students with construction training.

“It’s actually our clients that built the centre,” said Night.

The centre is looking forward to settling in at its expanded quarters with enhanced services to help their clients complete a successful journey into the world of work.

“We’ve come a very long way,” said Albert.

“If we can help one client leave with something, we did our job.”

Newspaper readership is no urban legend

You’ve heard of urban legends, right? Like the lady who had a spider bite that turned into a nest of eggs that hatched under her skin, or the tale of the kid that died from drinking cola after swallowing Pop Rocks.

How about this one: “Nobody reads newspapers anymore.”

Like many urban legends, everybody’s heard it, and some people assume it must be true because they’ve heard it often enough.

Well, like Pop Rocks kid and spider-egg woman, it just isn’t so.

The debunker in this case is 2019 Newspapers 24/7 study, conducted by News Media Canada, the national organization representing more than 1,100 daily and community news media outlets across the country.

This study, the seventh annual one, was conducted in February 2019 across all provinces, in English and French and consists of 800 online interviews. It was designed to explore how Canadians read daily and community newspaper content, on different platforms and at different times during the day.

Since the first study back in 2012, there have been shifts in reading by platform but one thing has not changed: Canadians continue to access newspaper content across all the various platforms.

In 2012, 85 per cent of Canadians reported that they read newspapers on any platform, over the course of a week and in 2019 that number has climbed to 88 per cent.

This year’s report also found that 83 per cent of newspaper readers are accessing at least some of their newspaper content online.

But that’s not replacing print readership, it’s supplementing it: the study found more than half of readers access newspaper content from both print and online sources.

The study found that readers from all demographics use multiple platforms – print, desktop/laptop computer, phone and tablet – to access newspaper content. Most print reading happens early in the day, while digital reading is more consistent from morning to night.

Which brings us to the other urban legend: millenials don’t read news. The research specifically looked at the newspaper reading habits of younger Canadians, and found that 88 per cent of millennials (those born between 1982 and 1999) read newspapers weekly – the same percentage as the overall population. The difference with this generation is how they access newspaper content – primarily through their mobile phones, and when they read – they peak early in the morning and are more consistent throughout the day, while Boomers peak in both the morning and again after dinner when reading news content.

And again, just because millennials read mostly on their phones doesn’t mean they’re not reading print as well. The study found more than half of all millennial newspaper readers also read news in print – from 57 per cent of all phone readers to 66 per cent of all tablet readers.

highest percentage of readership throughout the day across all platforms, again peaking in the morning and after dinner.

“Both print and digital newspaper sources play a unique and distinct role in the lives of Canadians,” says Claude Heimann, the president of Totum Research, which conducted the study. “Readers start their day with the comprehensive and in-depth reporting of a print newspaper, and stay up-to-date on breaking news with digital as the day progresses.”

Indigenous oral history has now suggested it was not Wandering Spirit at all who was hanged, but someone who volunteered to take his place.

The story she reiterates about Wandering Spirit (Kahpaypamahchakwayo) is likely that of pure fiction given rise by emotions and the embellishment of oral history over time. I heard a version of this story many years ago, only it was a very old and sick Indian that traded places with Wandering Spirit at the last moment because he was soon to die from some disease. This story says that Wandering Spirit escaped to the United States and changed his name to Iron Stump.

This account can be debunked as the eight prisoners were in shackles at all times and only had them removed immediately before they ascended the scaffold. The latest version is that his brother-in-law took his place. I noticed that this brother-in-law has no name, but I am sure there soon will be one. Could this new version in today’s terminology be classed as some sort of conspiracy theory? Another attempt to rewrite history?

Wandering Spirit was the well-known war chief for Chief Big Bear. It is unlikely he was mistaken for someone else. Many people knew him well, especially W.B. Cameron, a survivor of the Frog Lake Massacre, in which Wandering Spirit played an integral part.

Then we saw regulations saying that any current coal-fired coal generating unit in the country, upon turning 50 years old, needed to be either retired or replaced with a carbon capture system that reduced its emissions to that (or below) a combined cycle natural gas-fired power plant. (Remember this point, it’s key, going forward).

Unfortunately, no other coal-fired power generator in Canada, including SaskPower, decided to implement carbon capture and storage on any other unit in the country, despite the fact that, now, five years later, they’ve pretty much figured out the bugs of carbon capture. The current thinking is they can build the next one for 67 per cent less, per tonne, compared to Boundary Dam Unit 3, if implemented at Shand Power Station.

Boundary Dam Units 4 and 5 will be shut down, despite this.

The federal Conservative government brought in the 50-year rule. The federal Liberal government brought in new regulations saying all conventional coal-fired power generation (without carbon capture and storage), must shut down by 2030 (remember that date, too.)

So we, here in Saskatchewan, and in Alberta, must do something in a big way to replace our reliance on

coal for baseload power, and get it done in what is now 10.5 years.

To this end, SaskPower’s president and CEO Mike Marsh has been talking about the economics of natural gas, whose prices have been extremely low during the intervening decade. It makes it really hard to go forward with new coal investment when natural gas is so price competitive. Indeed, in recent years, there are times in various places on the continent where gas is, for brief times, actually negatively priced. As in, the producer had to pay someone to take it. That’s beyond free.

A little less than a decade ago, Northland Power built a $700 million combined cycle natural gas plant at North Battleford that generates 260 megawatts for SaskPower.

The Crown corporation will soon be in the process of firing up operation its 350 megawatt Chinook Power Station at Swift Current, costing for $680 million. These plants went up incredibly quickly and easily, compared to almost any other alternative source of baseload power, be it coal, hydro or nuclear. It’s easy to see why the announced Moose Jaw plant is next on the horizon. I would expect the future could see a plant just outside Regina, and another in northeast Saskatchewan, too. As long as you are close to a pipeline and a bit of water, they’re easy-peasy, and with about half the emissions from coal.

But what is happening now? The federal Liberal government is implement-

ing regulations, initially published in the Saskatchewan Gazette Dec. 12, 2018, that says new natural gasfired combined cycle plants that fire up after 2021 will be subject to the carbon tax after 2030.

Wait, what?

Wasn’t combined cycle natural gas supposed to be the better alternative to coal?

And let’s be real here: the 2021 date might as well be now. It takes several years to design and build a plant. If a plant has not already scratched dirt before today, there’s no way in hell it will be ready before a 2021 deadline.

That effectively means that all future combined cycle natural gas plants are subject to the carbon tax. The ever-increasing carbon tax. Or, as Premier Scott Moe likes to quote his SaskPower Minister Dustin Duncan, “A Justin Trudeau, Ralph Goodale, Liberal Party of Canada, job-killing, soul-sucking, unconstitutional, supported by the Saskatchewan NDP carbon tax!”

Saskatchewan has precious little left in the ability to build new, major hydro plants. To make hydro power, you need a) elevation, b) lots of water, c) all the above. Saskatchewan has d.) none of the above.

If we decided, today, to build a large scale, twounit nuclear power plant at 1,000 megawatts each, there is no way on Earth they would be complete and generating by 2030. It would be easier to hook up to Marvin the Martian’s flying saucer’s Illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator than get a nuke plant up in that time. And even then, would any of these projects, either nuclear power or space modulators, be able to get through a Bill C-69 impact assessment before my 12-year-old son is a senior citizen?

So what, pray tell, are we supposed to use for baseload power generation in Saskatchewan after 2030? Is this the federal government’s way of forcing us to buy large scale hydro power from Manitoba? If so, will that part of, oh, I don’t know, a national energy corridor? What alternative will we have?

Better herd up your unicorns and start feeding them navy beans, because the only way we’re going to be able to power this province without incurring mammoth carbon taxation will be with unicorn farts, by the gigawatt.

The adjudicators were Paul and Pauline Sayers of Viewpoint Photographic Design. In addition to their duties as judges, they also took the time to discuss each photograph entered in the competition, and reviewed the strengths and areas for improvement. Oil spill art featured at the Chapel Gallery

Friday marked the official launch of a long-awaited exhibition based on one of the most impactful environmental disasters ever to hit the Battlefords.

The 2016 Husky oil spill into the North Saskatchewan River caused millions upon millions of dollars in damage and serious disruption to the water supply of North Battleford and other communities.

Now, the art community has responded with various works in the exhibition As Long as the River Flows: An Art Response to the North Saskatchewan River Oil Catastrophe.

The exhibition is cocurated by Leah Garven of The Chapel Gallery and Jesse Campbell of the Mann Art Gallery in Prince Albert. The Chapel Gallery held their exhibition reception event Friday evening with a number of artists taking part.

The effort has been years in the making. A few months after the oil spill took place in July 2016, a call went out from the Chapel Gallery for submissions of artwork including from mixed media, film, literary and emerging artists.

submissions, organizers persisted with the concept and ultimately received submissions from about 20 participants. The works featured in the exhibition include a wide range of paintings, poems and sculptures, including several submissions from new “emerging” artists.

Among those responding to the call for submissions was Saskatoon multimedia artist Monique Martin, mainly because of her own interest in environmental topics.

She had three pieces

on display in North Battleford. One of her works was called “Now and Forever,” and featured a set of möbius bands with Saskatchewan fish printed on them using ink and used motor oil.

“When I first printed it they looked pretty crisp and everything was neat and clean, but then the oil kept moving and moving, and every time it’s exhibited it changes slightly, because the oil keeps moving on the paper.”

Ash Lascelle memorial fund sends kids to camp

Five “Hope Kids” are heading to Ranger Lake Bible Camp this summer as a result of a memorial fund set up in memory of Ash Lascelle.

The fund is called the B4C Ash Lascelle HOPE Ranger Lake Bible Camp HOPE Memorial Fund. It is set up in memory of Ash Lascelle who passed away in January of 2018 at age 15.

The word “hope” is used because one of Ash’s friends had made up a number of car decals in his memory with the word “hope.”

Ranger Lake was a special place for Ash during his life.

“My son Ash used to come to Ranger Lake all the time with one of his friends, and they loved it,” said Ash’s mom Michele Lascelle.

He attended camp each summer and took part in the swimming and water sports and sing-alongs there.

The memorial fund was set up initially using funds that were left in Ash’s bank account.

“We weren’t sure what to do with it, so with the help of Deb McNabb from Bridges for Children and the Living Faith Chapel, we made a memorial fund.”

the dreams of local kids to attend summer camp.

Anyone can donate to the fund, which is run through Bridges for Children and Living Faith Cha-

pel. The cost to send one Hope kid to camp is $330.

It should be noted any amount will be accepted.

According to the Living Faith Chapel’s web-

site, Bridges for Children is a program for children under the age of 12 who are having contact with the RCMP. It uses what is described as a familycentred, team-based and strength-focused process called “wraparound” to help families meet their needs and challenges.

One child is selected through Bridges for Children to benefit from the memorial fund. That child is then able to select a “special someone” to go with them, be it a friend or cousin or someone else, “because that was the deal with Ash, you always bring a friend,” Michele said.

Last year more than $1,300 was raised, which was enough to send four

kids to Ranger Lake Bible Camp for a week. The 2018 Hope ambassadors were Sheanna and Tori, both Grade 4 students from Connaught, and Dezminn and Sundance, both cousins in Grade 5 in McKitrick.

This year they are sending five kids who are this year’s Hope ambassadors.

Teanna and Raye Anne who are Grade 5 from Connaught, Arielle who is Grade 4, and Dezminn and Sundance from McKitrick who are going back for a second year.

Teanna, Raye Anne and Arielle were there for the first week, while Dezminn and Sundance were preparing to go for the second week.

Michele reports that the kids’ participation last year had been lifechanging, with improved performance in the classroom. Both Dezminn and Sundance were excited to return to Ranger Lake for a second year.

Bernie Eiswirth

Bernie Eiswirth was born in Regina, June 4, 1955. He began playing baseball at the age of eight years, advancing through mosquito, beaver, bantam and midget divisions until he graduated from high school at 17. Bernie was primarily a pitcher and first baseman. Bernie was a sought after pitching prospect for Regina teams entering provincial tournaments.

Following one year of university, he began a 27year career in the Regina Police Service, retiring with the rank of sergeant in 2001. He then accepted the position as executive officer with the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Services, remaining in that position today.

Bernie obtained his level 2 coaching certificate. Following high school, Tanner Brotzel, Gary’s son, went to college, and played for his college team. To play competitive summer baseball, Tanner had to travel outside of Regina to play in the Western Major Baseball League. This prompted Bernie and Gary to assemble a board of directors, raise finances and successfully put a community-owned team on the field for the 2005 season.

The Regina Red Sox, first established in 1942, were reborn.

The Western Canadian Baseball League is a summer collegiate league consisting of 12 teams located in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Its roots stem back Etta and Bernie Meisner.

Between 1993 and 2004 Gary was involved with both his children’s sports activities. Tanner was in baseball while Gary played competitive softball himself until 2004, having been a player on numerous provincial and Western Canadian Softball Championship teams.

Throughout his son’s minor baseball career, Gary coached, teamed up with Bernie Eiswirth, who also had a son playing baseball team with Tanner.

Following high school, both sons went on to college and playing baseball with their respective college team. In order to play competitive summer baseball, both sons had to travel out of Regina

Dick Horrell took closest to the pin on number eight, while Harry Zamonsky won the Co-op car wash by making the longest putt on number nine. Gary and Bernie saw an untapped market for local players attending college to come back and play summer baseball. Gary and Bernie assembled a board of directors, raised finances and put together a community-owned team on the field in 2005.

Gary coached the Regina White Sox AAA mosquito, peewee, bantam and midget divisions between 1995 and 2003. His peewee team won the 1998 provincial championship.

Other team achievements include the 2010 and 2014 Western Major Baseball League Eastern Division Championships and the 2011 and 2012 WMBL League Championships.

His midget team was the provincial runner up and attended the Western Canadian championships in Kelowna, B.C. in 2003, and his team was the WMBL runner-up in 2008. Gary was a guest coach for the bantam championships in Windsor, Ont., in 2000.

OBITUARIES ETCHEVERRY: Mr. Maurice Etcheverry passed away peacefully with family by his side Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Battlefords Union Hospital at the age of 72 years. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, June 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Vital Roman Catholic Church in Battleford, SK, with Reverend Father Cuong Luong as celebrant. Interment was held at the City Cemetery. HECK: It is with profound sadness that the family of Braxton Heck announce his sudden passing at home in the early morning of June 13th, 2019. He was born May 31st, 2009 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Braxton was born deaf or lost his hearing during his first year of life.

This did not hinder him in the slightest as he was a rambunctious youngster who overcame this obstacle. Prior to Braxton’s third birthday he received Cochlear Implants and despite the challenges of keeping processors on a toddler, he quickly realized the incredible gift of hearing that technology had provided him.

Braxton had a love for life, greeted each day with a mischievous smile and a twinkle in his eye and was always eager to help with any task. He loved the outdoors, was an excellent swimmer and was very creative as he enjoyed making things and drawing.

Braxton looked forward to the weekends when he and his family would visit Grandma and Grandpa Rafuse at the farm. He enjoyed riding the quad, gopher hunting, looking for deer sheds, boating and fishing with his Dad. He had an undeniable love for his big brother Zachary whom he looked up to and idolized.

Braxton was the second of Mom’s babies and only she was allowed to do certain things for him. He had an extremely close bond with his Grandpa (Pa) and Grandma Heck who provided care for him and his brother since infancy while his parents worked. Braxton enjoyed going to the movies with Pa and Grandma and was always eager to go with Pa on errands around town, swimming or to their many excursions to the Dollar Store. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPARC Program (Saskatchewan Pediatric Auditory Rehabilitation Centre, Rm 21 Ellis Hall, Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK S7N 0W8 Attention: Lynn Brewster. Norma grew up on the farm near Reward and married Matthew in October 1953. They started raising a family and farming in Reward. Norma was an enthusiastic curler and loved to play softball as well. Norma was a lifelong member of The Catholic Women’s League. They moved to Battleford in 1972 and she started working at the Marian Press. Norma loved to host family get-togethers and she was an excellent cook. Matthew and Norma moved into Luther Heights in Saskatoon in 2009. With loving family at her side, Norma passed peacefully on July 5, 2019 at Samaritan Place Long Term Care Facility. Lawrence enjoyed hunting at his family moose cabin in the fall, travelling to Texas in the winter but most of all he enjoyed spending summers at his and Pat’s cabin on Lac LaRonge. He loved entertaining friends and family at the cabin and he was especially famous for his fish fries. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. OBITUARIES SKOW: It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Skow, at Leduc, Alberta (formerly from North Battleford, Saskatchewan) at the age of 89. Edward will be lovingly remembered by his wife Elsie (married 67 years), daughter Myrle (Tony), son Gregory (Jamie), son Darcy (Dana) and his 7 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren. Edward grew up on a farm in Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan with his parents Charles and Viva Skow. He met his wife Elsie Kahl at a church dance in Medstead, Saskatchewan where he was playing in the orchestra. They married in April of 1952.

Edward and Elsie moved to North Battleford and were blessed with three children and later were blessed with 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Edward pursued a career with the North Battleford City where he became the Foreman of the City Water Works Department. In his working career Edward also was a Fireman and he retired from Battlefords Regional Care Centre. Edward loved to square dance, play the drums and the guitar. He also loved to travel with his wife Elsie across Canada, United States and Europe. Edward loved to curl and play softball and most recently his days were spent volunteering at Salem Manor in Leduc, Alberta. A Celebration of Life will be held in the future. by Ken Baert and his daughter, Danika. The eulogy was presented by Mac Creech. The special music was “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and “How Great Thou Art” by saxophone soloist, Robin Cathro and was accompanied by Ann Campbell.

The special song was “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Grobin. The urn bearers were Ken Baert and Doug Baert. Donations in memory of Gerry may be made to the Lloydminster Rescue Squad or Charity of Choice. McCaw Funeral Service Ltd., of Lloydminster, Alberta administered the funeral arrangements.

OBITUARIES BOLDT, WERNER ISAAC Werner Isaac Boldt was born on November 27, 1926 at Waldheim, SK. He was the second son born to Isaac and Anna Boldt (nee Dick), who had just recently crossed the Atlantic Ocean to arrive in Canada. In 1928 the family moved to the Glenbush area to begin farming. Werner’s school years were spent at the one room school of Avery.

As with many other boys, recess was the favorite subject - softball in the summer with Werner as their pitcher. Farming was the way of life. Horses the source of power, hauling water from the lake, picking stones by hand, and milking cows. Werner spent countless hours walking behind the horse drawn harrows.

Church was a weekly part of growing up as the parents were concerned about the spiritual life of the children. As a teen, Werner accepted Jesus as his savior. On August 1st, 1943, he was baptized on the profession of his faith and joined the MB Church where he served in various capacities. Much later when the church had no pastor, Werner attended the Belbutte Full Gospel Church, where Floyd Berg became his pastor and personal friend. On October 15th, 1950 on a cold, wet, snowy day, Werner and Martha (Harder) walked down the isle of the old MB Church to begin married life as a couple and there were no attendants. In due time, 4 sons and one daughter arrived to bring joy and enriched his life. Horses were always an important part of his life and he enjoyed being part of a parade with show wagon and harness, volunteering at the Battleford’s Western Museum and a few wagon treks. Over the years Werner was involved in several serious accidents. The Lord graciously restored him and extended his earthly journey. Werner believed you needed the Lord’s blessings on the labor of your hands as Psalm 127:1 states: “Except the Lord, build the house, they labor in vain.” When the present MB Church was built, Werner was a part of the construction crew. The gravel needed to construct a full basement was all shoveled by hand. There were no power tools at the site, even for the sawing of the lumber.

Werner enjoyed the new life the grandchildren brought into the family. They still remember the occasional whisker rubs they received after he had caught them. Werner will be fondly remembered by his loving wife of 68 years, Martha and their children: Ray (Trudy) and their family: Jenelle (Scotty) Lepp, Stephanie, Steven (Angela); Burt and his family: Samantha, Cassandra; Barrie (Dian) and her children: Chad, Dee Jay (Chris Cobbe), Marcie (Greg) Hope; Leona (Don) Baerg and their family: Jenilee (Steve) Evans, Chris (Lierin) and 15 great grandchildren. Werner is also survived by his brother, Rudy (Lydia) Boldt of Abbottsford, BC, his sister, Helga Krahn and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Werner is predeceased by his parents, Isaac and Anna Boldt (nee Dick), his step-mother, Agnes Boldt (Stobbe), his son, Dorie, his brothers, Abe, Walter, Jake and his brother-in-law, Alvin Krahn.

Werner’s new journey begins without pain, endless beauty and joy. The Funeral Service was held Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 2:00 pm from the Medstead Community Hall, Medstead, SK with Pastor Floyd Berg and Pastor Monty Buhler officiating. Music ministry was provided by Marjorie Klassen and Cheyenne Orange. Wayne Boldt delivered the eulogy and tributes were given by Werner’s grandchildren. The pallbearers were Ray Boldt, Barrie Boldt, Steven Boldt, Burt Boldt, Chris Baerg and Chad Reitsma. Following the service, the family invited all in attendance for lunch and fellowship in the Community Hall.

Werner’s final resting place is in the Glenbush Mennonite Brethren Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to Canadian Food Grains Bank, P.O. Father Fafard fell on his face.” Cameron states: “Wandering Spirit feared that the ball and chain of which he complained would impede his progress to the Indian Nirvana. On a bright moonlight night soon after the executions I was shot at by an Assiniboine Indian as I came out of my house in Battleford. I expect he had observed me as one of the coroner’s jury.” Being on the coroner’s jury, I am sure Mr. Cameron would have noticed if anything was awry.

Cameron’s description of Wandering Spirit – “Perhaps it was because I came to know him so well and witnessed the ferocity of his wild, complex nature when roused, that Wandering Spirit has always filled the place in my memory among the many Indian chiefs I have met. An odd thing about him was his hair. Whereas the hair of the ordinary Indian is as straight as falling water, the plaits of the war chief, while long and black like any other Indian’s, stood about his head in thick curls, forming a somber background for his dark piercing eyes.

And those eyes! Shall I ever forget them? I can see them yet, in all their burning intensity, flashing here and there, seeing everything as though it were yesterday. His nose was long and straight, his mouth wide and lips thin and cruel. He had a prominent chin, deep sunken cheeks and features darkly bronzed and seemed about the and mouth with sharply-cut lines.” Does this sound like an individual who could be mistaken for someone else, especially by a person like Cameron, who knew him so well?

Cameron writes that he visited Wandering Spirit many times while he was awaiting justice in jail within the barracks of Fort Battleford. I doubt Cameron could have been fooled by such a switch, thus it is very unlikely that they hanged the wrong person.

Cameron refers many times in his book to the hanging of Wandering Spirit.

Patrick Gammie Laurie, editor of the Saskatchewan Herald, interviewed Wandering Spirit. Father Cochin converted Wandering Spirit to Christianity in the days leading up to his execution. I am quite sure both of these individuals knew exactly who Wandering Spirit was. Many people from Frog Lake likely attended the hangings. They, too, would have known the identity of Wandering Spirit.

There is no evidence to indicate that Wandering Spirit does not lie with his seven companions. The evidence is overwhelming that Wandering Spirit was the man who was hanged.

W.B Cameron was the author of Blood Red the Sun, a story he lived. He describes Thomas Quinn as “my brave friend.” I doubt if Cameron would have let Wandering Spirit get away with the murder of his friend.

I have no other comments on Rose Roger’s letter except to say she should read more about the history of Battleford. If she knew the crimes of the eight “warriors” buried on the hillside she may have a different opinion.

Oil spill art at the Chapel Gallery Continued from Page 8 as the möbius bands was meant to send a message about the “never-ending” environmental impact the oil has on animal and plant life.

“Once the oil enters the environment, it’s not leaving,” said Martin.

Another of Martin’s pieces was called “Collateral Damage” and featured an adding machine and rolls of tape with outlines of fish printed on them, illustrating the costs associated with the oil spill.

That particular piece, along with “Now and Forever” and other works, had already been exhibited in New York City at the International Print Center

“It’s making its rounds, making people think about the value of the environment,” said Martin.

Another who answered the call for submissions was Laurie Blondeau. She is a project manager in her regular job in Saskatoon and new to the art scene, but she said she was encouraged to participate because of the exhibition’s call for emerging artists.

“They obviously wanted different perspectives and there is an opportunity,’ said Blondeau.

Blondeau said she has been “doing environmental art for a very long time and trying to express the impacts of different elements and things that we do to the Earth that really impact us health-wise and otherwise.”

Two watercolour pieces were on display. One was called “Wonder of It?” and featured a couple of children at a waterfall. If you look closely, one of them is outlined but not painted in.

A second watercolour was called “One by One,” in which two children are depicted climbing a rock.

This time, neither one is painted in.

The intent, Blondeau said, was that “our children could go missing in the future if we don’t take care of what we have today.”

“I wanted to display it in a way that was not in your face, but obvious,” Blondeau said.

Some local artists had sculptures on display. One was Heather Hochbaum of Battleford, who also works at the Chapel Gallery.

Hochbaum’s display was called “To Lose or Not to Lose.” This work built upon her background as a traditional quilter, but it included a three-dimensional aspect as well.

It featured a number of cubes put together with free-motion quilting on a sewing machine, and included natural colours and depictions of water, wildlife and green areas.

Look closer, though, and you will also see shiny black strips on the cubes – representing the oil in the river.

The idea was to show the impact petroleum products would have on the river if their consumption is not reduced.

“We have to smarten up and be more careful about how to use things,” Hochbaum said.

Hochbaum was motivated to take part because of the direct impact the spill had on the place she called home.

“It was such an impactful event for our communities, both in Battleford and North Battleford,” said Hochbaum.

She pointed to Battleford having to supply North Battleford with water during the crisis using a supply line across the river.

“You could see on the edge of the river the cleanup and those kind of things. It kind of drove it home that it was a major deal … It really hit home.

Oil spills are nasty things.”

Two other local artists taking part were Cliff and Sherron Burns. Cliff provided a couple of poems about the spill: one called

“Harbingers” and the other “Some Say It Will End in Fire.”

Sherron’s submission was a sculpture titled “Stranded.” The sculpture featured two amusing but forlorn-looking birds made from wooden shoehorns.

The birds were depicted as standing on a piece of wood that might have floated down the river during the spill.

“They seem to be looking out at the world around them with a certain amount of despair,” she said.

Sherron said that when the call first went out for submissions, her first thought was about the water and the creatures that live on the water, and that inspired her to come up with the creation.

She welcomes the exhibition as a way for artists to be able to “make a statement about our water and our environment and protecting Mother Earth.”

“I think that’s a really important role that artists play in society is helping us make sense of things that seem incomprehensible at times.”

Her husband Cliff echoed that sentiment.

“To me, the artists are on the very front line of activism. They’re the ones that have their fingers on the pulse, they’re the ones that sense the Zeitgeist.

Those are the people to go to if you want to know all the things to come.”

As Long as the River Flows will be on display at the Chapel Gallery until July 21. It is slated for the Mann Art Gallery in the summer of 2020.

Highlights during the evening were the more than $900,000 in net revenue received in 2018/19 compared to just less than $700,000 in the previous year. This revenue increase is attributed to the successful capital campaigns “We Don’t Want to Miss a Beat” which saw the installation of a new cardiac telemetry system to monitor heart conditions anywhere within BUH, and “We Want to…Catch It! Stop It! Treat It!” campaign to purchase a new mammography unit for medical imaging to detect breast cancer early.

The new, up-to-date cardiac telemetry system, the first like it in Saskatchewan, was installed in January. The new mammography unit is expected to be in place in 2020.

BUH Foundation also saw success with their “Leave a Legacy” program.

This program provides an opportunity to acknowledge a future bequest to be made to BUH Foundation and to celebrate the contribution today. In the 2018/19 fiscal year there were five new bequests made to BUH Foundation.

The Board of directors and staff are honoured to receive these bequests and grateful for the lasting impact these individuals have made on local healthcare.

BUH Foundation operates within the new Saskatchewan Health Authority. BUH Foundation has now gone through their first full year under this arrangement and is proud of the support they provide.

Every dollar raised by BUH Foundation stays in the community and continues to enrich patient care in our local area.

“It is an honour to be a part of BUH Foundation and work with many amazing, kind and giving

individuals. I am looking forward to another successful year, both in terms of fundraising plus growing and expanding ongoing projects and programs,” expressed Claudette McGuire, BUH Foundation executive firector.

As the meeting concluded, introductions were made of the new board of directors members and announcement of the new 2019/20 executive committee. Jay Crockett, 2018/19 chairperson completed his maximum three, two-year terms and had to step down as a member at this time.

New directors, Ms. Roni Zakresky, Ms. JoAnne Iverson and Dr. James Lawrence, were welcomed to their first two-year terms. The new executive committee of Chairperson Sue Pruden-McIvor, ViceChairperson Tim Sletten, Treasurer, Al White and Secretary Tracy Voigt were announced.

“I look forward to the challenge of serving as BUH Foundation Board of Directors Chairperson,” said Sue Pruden-McIvor.

“Healthcare is important to me and my family within the Battlefords. I am honoured to take on this role and look forward to serving our community to the best of my ability as we strive to provide enriched patient care for everyone.”

The board, staff and volunteers of BUH Foundation are already working towards the success of the 2019/20 fiscal year. The 4th Annual “On Air: for Healthcare” Radio-thon was held in May, the Wayne Pruden Memorial Golf Tournament was held in June and the $100,000 Cash Lottery is being planned for August.

Sovereignty used to belong to God When Ed, my old neighbour from Saskatchewan called last week, he wanted to know what I was doing. I told him that I was studying the sovereignty of God. He was quick to say that he thought God was no longer sovereign over many or much.

I suggested that it is a matter of perception.

Maybe folks forget about God unless they want to ask a favour of Him or blame Him. God is in control, but that doesn’t stop us from wanting absolute power for ourselves. We tend to have control issues wanting things done our way, which we think is the only right way there is.

God is supreme and worthy of our awe and honor. Ed said that I made God sound like a dictator as one who rules the way he wants. (Psalm 115:3) Earthly dictators and elected rulers may abuse their power and terrorize their citizens: but God

He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

God is, above all things and before all things.

He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and

the end. (Revelation 21:6) God created all things and holds all things together, both in heaven and on earth, both visible and invisible. (1 Colossians 1:16) There is no limit to the knowledge of God. (Romans 11:33) God knows all things past, present, and future.

God can do all things and

rules the universe and our personal lives, with His love that wants what is best for us and for all.

His love for us is balanced with his love for others.

He rules in love. His word promises that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him. (Romans 8:28) Ed said to me, “If you are going to preach on the sovereignty of God, it isn’t going to go well because people resent bosses, those that are in control.

People want to be their own bosses and their own authority. People want to exercise their free will.

People want to have their own way, make their own choices, whether good or bad.”

I agreed with Ed that many people stumble over the idea that God is in total control. They get angry that a sovereign God doesn’t eliminate all evil and suffering. They refuse to believe that God can bring good out of evil and suffering. They want a God that they can explain entirely according to their own terms.

Evil and suffering are part of our human condition, we make wrong choices and sin. Sin is met with the goodness and love of our sovereign God. In the brokenness of suffering and evil from sin, Jesus provides help, hope, and the power to turn our bad choices around to His praise.

Wolseley’s Hotel – Built by Founder of Beaver Lumber Wolseley’s first hotel, a one-storey, wood-frame structure with a canvas top built in 1883, might have been a primitive affair, but William. D. Perley and Edwin. A. Banbury had big plans. Banbury, Wolseley’s first settler, arrived from Ontario in 1882.

Perley arrived that same year with his young family after being defeated in a provincial election in New Brunswick. Soon after they arrived, both men built several small businesses, one of which was the wood and canvas hotel.

founder, along with his brother, of the Beaver Lumber Company. His hotel provided him with the capital he needed to establish Banbury Bros. Lumber Company in the 1890s. A series of mergers and takeovers led to the formation of one large lumber company in 1906. A name was needed that had something to do with wood. Banbury came up with “Beaver” which remained the company’s name until 1999, when it was taken over by Home Hardware.

Perley was elected to the Northwest Territorial Council for Qu’Appelle in 1885. In 1887, he was the first elected MP for the riding of East Assiniboia.

After two years, Perley resigned to accept an appointment to the Senate in 1889. He served on the Senate until his death in 1909.

In the middle of the night on Oct. 5, 1923, a fire broke out in the basement of the Leland Hotel.

Within four hours, the hotel burned to the ground.

All 30 people inside the hotel at the time managed to escape with their lives. About half of them were guests – mainly commercial travellers; the rest were regular boarders and hotel staff. The proprietor of the Leland, Pearl Corbett (daughter of the Halls) and her four children, were

among the first to be rescued. Some of the hotel guests had to jump from the upper floors. Others lowered themselves from the windows of their rooms with ropes. One salesman crawled down the hall on his hands and knees, through the acrid smoke, only to fall down the stairs.

He managed to get out the front door with only a few bruises.

According to the Regina Morning Leader (Oct. 6, 1923), Frank Vincent, the postmaster for Wolseley who roomed on the hotel’s third floor, had the most spectacular escape.

“Overcome by smoke in his bedroom he could only be reached by a couple of ladders,” the newspaper recounted. “The upper

ladder was held from the top of the lower ladder by two men while the third assisted Mr. Vincent over the window sill and down the perilous upper ladder.”

None of the contents of the hotel was saved. People lost everything except the pajamas they were wearing as they escaped the blaze.

After the fire, the Corbetts and Grandma [Eliza] Hall bought the Empire Hotel and renamed it the Leland Hotel. This hotel was owned and operated

by Victor Hunter and family from 1971 until at least 2010. Today, Lucky Singh owns Wolseley’s old hotel where he serves East Indian food. Wolseley is 100 kilometres east of Regina on the Trans-Canada Highway.

It is one of the largest supporters of youth activities in the country. The Legion promotes Remembrance to the younger generation and works with schools to keep memories of fallen Veterans alive. The Legion also supports youth leadership programs – Cadets, Scouts, Guide and youth sports, most notably the Legion’s National Youth Track and field. Any Canadian citizen or citizen of an Allied nation 18 years of age or older is welcome to become a member of the Legion. Canada Day in Maidstone started with a wellattended breakfast at the Legion Hall.

The parade, organized

by Parade Marshal Bill Foster, was headed up by RCMP Cst. Hoffman. The North of the Gully 4-H Club entered the calves and horses they had raised. First place went to a float entered by the Town of Waseca.

Second place went to Aaron and Melissa Paton family in their 1949 restored Chevrolet 1-ton truck. Third prize went to CIBC members with replicas of children’s large size Lego blocks in all colors.

The slow antique tractor races organized by Richard Meynberg had 16 entries.

First place under 2 mph was won by Jim Sparks of Edgerton. Second place was Terry Box of Unity. Third place was Dewey Taylor of Paynton. Over 2 mph first place was Bill McLaren, second-place was Vince Gerlinski of Maidstone and third place was Albert Duhaime of Paynton.

In the lawn and tractor races, first place was Richard Meynberg of Maidstone, second place was Terry Box and third place was Brittney Chocker of Vermilion.

A new event this year was a pie-eating contest or-

ganized by Mark Telenga.

Contestants had to represent an organization in town. Winner was Kaitlynn Johnson for the Maidstone Library, second was Tylor Johnson for the late Nic Weston Children’s Memorial Fund.

The horseshoe tournament had 15 teams, organized by Bob Banks. A event was won by Clayton Klein and Rob Clark. Second event was won by Bob Banks and Mike Ballan.

The Girl Guides of Maidstone operated a dunk tank. Thank you to all who volunteered to be dunked.

Cathy Utri organized the face painting, which the children always enjoy.

Shelby Wakefield and Christine Carlson took visitors on tours of the buildings in the museum village.

The decorated bikes were judged by Cst. Hoffman. First place was Ariyanna Blanchette. Second place was Evelyn Telega.

Third place was Dima ElHalabi.

Children in different age categories competed in a variety of flat races, including the old-fashioned sack race.

The highlight of the afternoon was the threshing demonstration. Allen Hinde, owner of the Oliver Red River Special threshing machine explained how it worked. It was powered by a 1928 McCormick Deer-

ing 1530 tractor operated by owner Vince Gerlinsky.

Four volunteer bundle pitchers fed the machine. Wheat was threshed into a large barrel. Straw was used later in a straw scramble filled with candy for the children.

The museum members and volunteers provided hotdogs, hamburgers, ice cream and beverages during the day. Bingo, organized by Dorothy Schwartz, was played from 4 to 6 p.m.

Caller was Bev Stewart and money collectors were Dorothy Harmel and Sharon Ruud.

The two-day slo-pitch tournament was organized

by Chris Zerr with 14 teams entered. First place went to a Maidstone team named Puddles. Second place went to a team called Lost in the Sauce. Third went to a Maidstone team called Other.

The Silver Lake ball team ran the beer gardens, provided food and entertainment. Proceeds from this plus the pancake breakfast went to the late Nic Weston Children’s Memorial Fund.

The fun-filled day for all ages was topped off with a spectacular fireworks display at dusk.

As I was working at the events, I apologize if I missed naming all the volunteers who made this event successful.

On Monday, June 17, Holy Family School in North Battleford celebrated the grand opening of a new playground at their annual family barbecue night. The school community council served hotdogs and cake to the many who were in attendance. The school is grateful to the volunteers who took the time out of their busy lives to help build these two outstanding structures from the ground up, as well as Northland Power for their donation towards the lunches, and to the Kiwanis Club for their generous donation.

They become our children in our heart. These four ladies are no exception.

Irene Greer and Sandra Walter, over the years, have taken many courses to become safe drivers.

They drove standard transmission buses through the gravel roads in all seasons to pick up children for school. In the winter, the roads were hard to drive through because they were covered in snow. The graders were not out to clean them a pathway. In the spring these ladies safely and cautiously drove on extremely soft grid roads.

Nowadays the graders are out more frequently to keep our grid roads in good condition, no matter what the seasons are.

Cheryl Klippenstein has been driving in both North Battleford and Battleford and Laurie Cunningham has been driving in the town of Battleford. They were lucky enough to have started with newer buses.

They were all automatics, with the newest technology. For our children’s protection, we have the child check system set up in the buses, so that “No Child is Left Behind,” and Zonar, so the bus can be found if it breaks down.

Sandra Walter has been driving for First Student Canada and Living Sky School Division. She is First Student’s second longest employee.

She learned to drive a school bus with a standard transmission, and she has driven the standards for more than half her career.

Walter has always been a spare driver for both bus companies. She has also been a spare for Prairie Bus. For 23 years, Walter would look forward to getting up in the mornings,

do her pre-trip inspection, then proudly and safely, take her students to school, teach in the classroom for the day, then take the students home after school. Plus, she has done many charters taking the students to sporting events. There, she would cheer on her group from Spiritwood.

Walter will miss driving the children to and from school every day. Luckily, she will still be a spare teacher and an educational assistant. She says she can’t give up on the children completely, so she will still be a spare teacher in Spiritwood for a few more years.

Irene Greer is one of the longest drivers at First Student Canada – 29 out of 32 years. Greer started 32 years ago driving a standard transmission school bus. She comments on how different the buses are now compared to how they were many years ago. Greer used to drive a 32-passenger bus, now she drives a 54-passenger.

Although the oldest bus is five years old, Irene prefers to drive the older bus.

Irene has been on two country runs. One run was only for a year. The other run was right in her community. She has been on that run ever since. The children that Greer used to drive to school now have children of their own. She has been driving some of the children to school for a few years. When you talk to her about the children that she has been transporting, you can see the gleam in her eye. She is a mother of seven, a grandmother of 15 and a great-grandmother of 19.

Greer has volunteered her time to her community in Beljennie for many years. She is still active in the ag society. She also loves to sew and helps

teach potential quilters to quilt. She belongs to a quilting group and has made many quilts.

Cheryl Klippinstein has worked for First Student Canada for 13 years. She was a stay at home mom who wanted to have a little extra spending money. She was able to take her own children on the bus with her.

After driving the bus for a while, she realized that this job also gave her a great feeling of being around children. Klippinstein has enjoyed getting up in the mornings and picking up the children. They would greet her with smiles all the time. She became very attached to the children.

It will be hard for her to give up her students, but she will always have the memories.

Klippinstein has always been a hard worker. She was very dedicated to her children – her own children as well as the children on her bus. In between her runs, she would work at her second job. She loves to sew in her spare time.

Laurie Cunningham has been driving a school bus now for 10 years.

Prior to this, she retired from Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management and moved to North Battleford 11 years ago. She needed something to fill her days, so she became a school bus driver. Cunningham has had a Battleford run ever since she has been with First Student. On Christmas and Easter, Laurie would decorate her bus for the festive season.

Her students would call her “Gramma Laurie.”

Cunningham was also a bus trainer for First Student. She says that she has trained about 40 people. In June she also received a Driver of the Month award.

Canada Day at the lake well enjoyed

The bicycle parade on July 1 was again a whopping success. The kids were all excited and had a good time as they rode the route. A drive through the village at the time made you proud to be Canadian as many homes and yards were decorated in red and white and lots of flags and balloons etc. The fireworks in the evening were outstandingly beautiful.

Whoever was in charge did a splendid job and we, the public, surely did enjoy the results. Also appreciated were the beer gardens and canteen on hand. It is great to have all these things in

a little village like we are and adds to the reasons we like living here.

Our beautiful green world is becoming a patchwork quilt with large yellow fields showing up everywhere. The rain most areas have received has been a boon to farmers and gardeners alike.

Beth Wynne and I made a trip to Spiritwood last week and were sorry to see the worms’ work south of Glaslyn that has taken place, leaving the forest with a dead look instead of a healthy green. We visited the museum in Spiritwood and found several family related items from our past.

Included was the teacher’s desk that used to be in Log Cabin School, north of Bapaume. The plaque reads “made by unknown” but I’m sure it was made by the late Charles Hare, father of the late Stanley and Allan Hare. The needlework papers that John Pearson’s mother subscribed to, before she was married, dated 1921, are lying on the sofa, addressed to Sarah Sigurdson. We also visited the graveyards at Spiritwood and Idylwild. It was a rewarding day.

The Paynton ferry is closed because of the high water.

Virgil and Vera Trytten’s daughter Tara and her husband Fraser, from Australia, are visiting for two weeks.

More than 100 ladies took part in Ladies’ Night on Wednesday, July 3, at the golf course in Meota, an amazing group.

Louise Cadrin from Vancouver visited family and friends in the area again last week, including her music teacher of many years ago, Junice Headley.

Duplicate bridge was played in the city July 2, with top scores by Margaret Dyck and Vern Iverson, Jane Groves and Gerry Craig, and Joeanne and Rudy Wiens. July 4 found another keen bunch with top scores by Vern Iverson and David Sharpe,

Gerry Craig and Catriona Winterholt and Mary Greenwald and Anna Marie Waldbillig.

The 22nd reunion of former Saskatchewan Safeway workers and associates, called Old Friends Golf Tournament, was held at Holiday Park in Saskatoon, July 6, with lunch and supper at the Granary.

Attending were Beth and Norm Wynne from Taber, Alta.,who spent some time here before going in.

Golf carts and other little mobile units are the subject of controversy as they use the streets in Meota. Their speed, their occupants, and where they travel all cause concerns.

The large number of big pontoon boats, speed boats and personal watercraft coming in are also a concern. It will be a miracle if the season runs out with no mishaps. The parking of

The two new cottages in Lakeview are both to the floor stage and progressing well.

The population of the village has increased two or threefold or more this week as every house has company and who knows how many are in the park campground as I’m sure its full.

Now they tell me that the storm Sunday morning was a real one, lots of thunder and lightning and a dump of rain, between half an inch and an inch.

News has just come from St. Paul, Alta., of the passing of Sharon (Charlebois) Hare. Sharon grew up in Spiritwood where her father Gerry had a butcher shop. Sharon and her husband Allan have two sons, Greg and Cory.

Borden students move on to new paths

Borden School held its graduation ceremony June 7, with the banquet catered by the Borden Lions.

Toasts at the banquet were given by Danika Pidwerbesky to the parents and coaches, to the bus drivers

by Kody Munkholm, to the staff by Colton Thiessen, overall appreciation by Ovidio O’Toole to Lions and Grade 11s. Brooke Brazeau was valedictorian.

silver stars, twisted black streamers and on one wall was a photo gallery. The north wall displayed the theme “A Sweet Ending to a New Beginning” in silver letters on a black background. MCs were Rachel Sutherland and Clayton Wiebe and, after O Canada, Principal Bro-

dy Morris introduced each grad as they entered the hall with their escorts and listed their achievements and what they planned for the future. Kody likes to act and sing, do karate and play soccer. Brooke was on SRC, did all sports, was in dance and is entering the nursing program.

Ovidio was in sports, SRC and dance club and plans to take welding at Sask Polytech. Danika was in all sports, SRC, dance club, worked with K and Grade 1 students and plans to enter kinesiology. Colton

was in track and field, does ranch roping, does volunteer work and plans to attend Lakeland Animal Science program. Brooke gave the valedictorian address citing new chapters in their lives, having learned valuable lessons at Borden that will help them in the future. She gave some lasting impressions of each of her classmates, who are all vastly different, but who have all worked together side by side. She thanked all the teachers, the secretary and all who have taught them. Guest speaker was past principal Mitch Luiten, who taught math and coached volleyball.

Luiten spoke of life being full of surprises. He had a great time with all five grads, with each one bringing something special to class. Borden School will be in your veins wherever you go, what you have learned here will carry you in to the future, and help you have the courage to be what you want to be, wishing them all the best for the future. 2018 grads Rachel

and Clayton gave some memories of the five grads from the years they attended school with them. A slideshow presentation of photos of each grad from baby to graduation was followed by the handing out of diplomas by Mr. Morris. After a short interval to re-arrange chairs, grads and escorts entered again for the Rose ceremony.

Each grad presented roses to family, then a dance and social time was held.

Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club members competed at the Saskatoon Prairieland Park 4-H regional show July 5 to 8. In team grooming on the 5th, the team of Abigail Roth and Justin Yasieniuk placed in the top eight in seniors. In judging on July 6 in seniors, Rachel Sutherland placed sixth overall and Colten Yasieniuk placed eighth overall, so they advance to provincial 4-H judging competition at Moosomin on Aug. 23 and 24. Other placings in senior judging were Courtney Yasieniuk ninth, Morgan Attrux 11th,

Justin Yasieniuk 12th. In intermediate, Cheyanne Roth placed ninth and in juniors Zayne Letkeman placed 10th. In the Junior Showcase of Arts, in cloverbuds, Caybri Letkeman was the only entry, and she placed first in baked goods (cookies), photographypeople, nature and other and second in crafts. In the yearling heifer classes on July 7, Justin was fifth in Angus No. 1, Hannah Remus was fourth in Charlolais, Courtney was fifth in Simmental No. 1, Jessica Attrux was fifth in Simmental No. 2. In two-yearold purebred cow and calf, Rachel was eighth, and in two-year-old commercial cow-calf Justin Yasieniuk was third, Cheyanne Roth fourth and Hanna Remus fifth. In three-year-old cow/calf Courtney Yasieniuk placed first (only entry). Prize money in each class was first -$50 with $5 increments down to sixth to 10th place at $15. Most members will be showing and selling their steers on July 8.

Kids are out of school, watch out for them

How are the lazy days of summer going in your life? Are you happy with the weather? The rains?

Your garden? Your vacation plans?

Unity was thankful that residents who experienced the tornado at the Murray Doell campground near Lac Des Isles on June 29 are all OK and that very few injuries resulted in this scary weather system that slammed into this Northern Saskatchewan lake resort. It’s been a good reminder to all of us to have an emergency plan in place and take cover quickly when bad weather hits.

Never underestimate bad weather.

Just a gentle reminder that even though school is out for the summer there are still kids in and around our school playgrounds so that we stay mindful of driving through these areas this summer. In addition to enthusiastic youngsters heading to our pool and outdoor rec venues on their bikes.

While activity is somewhat quieter this month in town, it doesn’t mean there isn’t anything for you and your family to do here.

You can go for a swim at the Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre. Check the town website or schedule at

the pool. Come for a game of ball hockey or hoop shooting at the Outdoor Rec Venue, lit until 10 p.m.

There are several choices of playgrounds to enjoy with the kids in our community and plenty of paved walking paths to go for a stroll or a roll/ride on. Watch a ball game at the diamonds as it is playoff time. Check posters around town or at the diamonds for the latest action. Take in a round of mini golf at Bluez. Check out the latest release movie on at 2nd Avenue Cinema, open every night of the week. Pickleball continues at the Unity Curling arena every Wednesday. Check out the museum, or unique shopping opportunities downtown.

Congratulations to U19 girls softball who earned bronze at their provincials in Saskatoon, the U16 girls who earned silver at their weather inhibited provincials in Regina and the U14 girls who won silver at their provincials in Saskatoon. U12 girl’s softball is off to Balgonie for their provincial event July 1214. Boy’s baseball is not 100 per cent finalized yet, however Unity will send

an 11U, 13U, 15U and 18U team to provincials across the province either July 1921 weekend or July 26-28 weekend. Senior cardinals will play their provincials Aug 9-11 weekend with league playoffs coming up with a next week start.

The community will also be rooting for the Team Blue members who have been selected by Softball Sask to officiate at upcoming Western Canadian and Canadian softball events this summer. A full list was in last week’s column as well as our local paper.

Local athletes, Abby Rutley and Reece Gilbert are fine tuning their final weeks of training before they head off to Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current in August to compete as part of Team Saskatchewan in softball (Abby) and triathalon (Reece). Watch your local paper and this column for updates, or you can follow the action on the Western Canada Games website.

The Unity golf course is always ready for golfers – open seven days a week to enjoy their wonderful ninehole grass green course.

Regular fun nights of golf on Tuesdays, often sponsored and providing a light meal. As well, men’s night continues on Wednesdays and congratulations to Martin Berg for sinking

The Unity Food Bank has put a call out to residents to remind them there is still need for products on their shelves and summer time shows a significant slowdown in donations.

Keep this valuable community service in supply when and where you can with non-perishable food items to help those around us that could use a hand up.

Second Avenue Theatre has some great releases

out this month so take in a summer movie with your family and friends with the added bonus of small town prices. The great new version of Aladdin just played and this week is the Pokemon movie and Men in Black with Toy Story 4 starting this Friday.

Don’t forget to bring your visitors to our local museum. It is a fabulous venue full of rich history and more than 1,400 artifacts to look at in 24 buildings. The museum committee work very hard to showcase Unity and area’s history in a way that is relevant and engaging. They appreciate your support of this fine facility.

Coffee row had plenty of weather to discuss after the Lac Des Isles tornado as some of the “rowers” knew campers that had been there and experienced what happened. Even though sporadic numbers at time due to summer vacation time, these folks still find time to enjoy a coffee and each other’s company while mulling over the weather, the growing season, the local sports scene, the Riders and the Jays as well as sharing their summer plans. So you see we keep busy here in Unity with wisdom, laughter and plenty of fun here in Unity with our friends on coffee row
