Permanent homeless shelter to be operated by Lighthouse

A permanent homeless shelter should be open in North Battleford in November.

Friday an announcement at the former Reclaim Outreach Centre at 962-102nd Street drew community leaders and representatives of The Lighthouse of Saskatoon to welcome the program to the Battlefords.

In an emotional address, Mayor Ian Hamilton of North Battleford said, “I can’t tell you how passionate I am about what is happening here today.”

Referring to Battlefords Tribal Agency Chiefs Community Development Corporation, who stepped up with an eleventh-hour $275,000 grant, he emphasized the importance the new shelter’s supporters.

“There’s no way we want anyone to ever freeze to death because they have no access to shelter.”

Over the last several years, the Battlefords Indian and Metis Friendship Centre has been stretched to its capacity trying to operate temporary shelter during the winter months, for which Hamilton thanked the organization.

The new shelter will operate year round, 24 hours a day, as an extension of the Lighthouse Supported Living of Saskatoon.

He also thanked Don Toovey and Pastor Len Beaucage of the Reclaim Outreach Centre, whose work over several years to establish a homeless centre in the same building has shown the way.

Efforts by ROC to operate an evening emergency shelter began in 2011 and were nearly quashed when, in 2012, an important funding opportunity was denied by the federal government.

In fact, the Lighthouse had also found itself at the point where the project’s future was in limbo, and was put back on track with funding from BATC CDC. Neil Sasakamoose, BATC executive director, said the organization has always had at the back of its mind that it would be the backup if other options didn’t materialize.

BATC CDC had also been providing funding for the BIMC. “When this opportunity came up, the Lighthouse really worked for it,” he said.

“They didn’t give up.”

He said at the eleventh hour, things weren’t looking good and the board made a decision, saying, “That’s enough. This is a facility we need, this is support our people need.”

Sasakamoose noted on a visit to the Lighthouse in Saskatoon that many of the people being served there were First Nation.

She said she was thinking how cold it was that morning, and about those who don’t have shelter.

“I can go into my truck or my home. Many people can’t.”

She welcomed the support, as well as the shelter, the new centre will provide.

“Sometimes our people can’t look after their emotional and spiritual health.”

In addition to providing emergency shelter, the centre will provide support and resources to the homeless and people finding it had to retain permanent housing.

“We see this as a continuum from emergency shelter to more permanent long term assistance,” said Hamilton.

Initially, there will be about 36 beds available in two wards, one for women and one for men, as well as rooms for families. There will be a separate area for those who are intoxicated, although admission will be denied to highly intoxicated or violent individuals, in which case the RCMP will be called.

DeeAnn Mercier said a delegation from North Battleford visited their facility this spring, and the Lighthouse felt it would be able to provide some of the long-term supports needed in North Battleford, especially because there was community support.

“The community was asking for it, the community was going to invest in it.”

Temporary Foreign Workers program takes centre stage

Internationally, the arts and entertainment community has always thrived on a culture of open exchange of talent. But local arts and entertainment programming has been put at risk by recent reforms to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) that create red tape and drive up the cost.

Small arts and entertainment organizations are overwhelmed by having to jump through legal hoops and shell out $1,000 each time they need to bring in international talent.

The government allows foreign performing artists on “timelimited engagements” to bypass the lengthy and complicated TFW process. While comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who performed four shows in Calgary over two days, may be exempt from the paperwork and fees, it is impossible to tell from the government’s guidelines whether a foreign actor in Canada for six weeks of rehearsals and performances is also exempt.

How did the government decide who’s exempt and who’s not? Unfortunately, behind-the-scenes artists and production crew do not enjoy exemptions, even though they are critical to any production. While the guidelines clearly state that a guest conductor can enter the country relatively easily to work, in one recent example, a musical company was forced to apply three times and consult an immigration lawyer before it got the go-ahead to bring in a behind-the-scenes director from Europe for a few weeks. Similarly, when the Alberta Ballet wanted

to bring in a set builder on a short-term contract, they were subject to the same application process as a multi-national employer seeking to fill a longer-term position.

There is confusion across the country about why some TFWs are exempt and others aren’t. Fashion models entering Canada on short-term contracts, for example, are subject to the TFWP application process, unlike performing artists.

Not surprisingly, delays created by the additional paperwork are causing companies to take their photo-shoots elsewhere.

When deciding between a Canadian location and a foreign model, companies have told the media that they would rather risk losing the venue than the model. As a result, dozens of Canadians who could be employed on a photo-shoot are losing work, too.

The federal government says it put these restrictions in place to ensure Canadians were first in line for jobs. And, indeed, there have been reports of Canadian workers displaced by lower-paid TFWs in some service-sector jobs.

Ironically, the rules have had the opposite effect in the arts and entertainment industry, where the regulations erode the industry’s capacity to bring in world class artists and employ Canadians.

To cover the full cost of administering the program, the government introduced a fee for applying to bring in a TFW. It was set at $275, and then raised to $1,000. This is an onerous cost for a small arts organization, which must pay as much for a few days’ or weeks’ work as a multi-national company pays for a worker coming to Canada for a year or more.

Should such different circumstances cost the same amount

to administer?

Controls are required and costs are inevitable, but they should be proportional to the national interest. Providing more exemptions, fast-tracking applications and reducing the paperwork would be a huge relief for smaller organizations with limited resources. It makes sense to waive the application process when the actual duration of the work is short and reduce the application fee where the potential loss to the economy and Canadian cultural scene is greater than the $1,000 cost.

If the fee cannot be waived altogether, a sliding scale fee structure could ease the financial barrier for those wishing to employ a truly temporary, temporary foreign worker. For example, when a foreign worker is needed for less than six months, the fee could be $250, or when the worker is to be hired for six months to a year, a $500 fee could be charged.

If the arts and entertainment community can’t attract the best international talent because of rigid TFWP rules, it’s Canada’s cultural scene that loses.

The changes were made in June to fix some big problems with the existing TFWP. The government has been clear it will not make further changes until after the next election.

The arts and entertainment community can’t wait that long.

Let’s loosen these inflexible rules before they do permanent harm.

Smoke alarms double survival rates Dear Editor An important fire safety program is in place in communities across Saskatchewan throughout Fire Prevention Week Oct. 5-11, 2014, and extending over the entire month. I am writing to make all parents aware of the initiative and how they can help.

Fire departments are working with teachers to educate children about the importance of properly functioning and installed smoke alarms. Watch for the “Test and Replace Your Smoke Alarm” homework kit in your child’s backpack, which includes a home fire escape plan and “Test and Replace” fire safety checklist. The packages are designed to work in tandem with the website www.safeathome.ca/testandreplace.

It is critical to know that working smoke alarms installed correctly throughout your home double the chances of surviving a catastrophic house fire.

To ensure your families safety from fire, you must test your smoke alarms monthly to confirm they are in proper working order. Smoke alarm batteries must be replaced with fresh ones at least once per year. Also, smoke alarms do not last forever. If your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old it must be replaced. Outdated alarms might not provide the protection you count on. Some new models feature 10-year lithium batteries that never need to be changed and last the full life of the alarm.

Please be fire safe and test and replace your smoke alarms this Fire Prevention Week.

United Way Month launched

October is United Way Month and representatives from Battlefords United Way were at City Hall Wednesday morning to officially launch their campaign for 2014.

They were on hand to raise the flag at City Hall and to provide details on some of the activities coming up to raise money this year.

Their fundraising events and activities start Oct. 11 with the Downtown BID 5K Turkey Run, starting at

10:30am in front of the Food Bank, with any cash donations going to the Battlefords United Way. Oct. 16 will include lunch at the Battlefords Co-op as part of Co-op Week Oct. 13-17.

On Monday, Oct. 20 Dr. Jean Clinton will be in the community to speak on family issues at McKitrick School at 6:15pm, as well as from 2 to 4pm as part of an Early Childhood Professionals Workshop.

Oct. 20-24 is Jeans Week where people can wear jeans to show their support for the

United Way. The month wraps up with Coffee on the Run Oct. 30 along with Innovation Credit Union and Tim Hortons.

According to chair Brendon Boothman, October is traditionally their biggest month for fundraising for the organization, which raises funds that go to various worthwhile causes and organizations in the community. The goal is to raise $25,000 from business and $15,000 from residential, and whatever else that can be raised on top of that from the other events.

Graffiti victim left frustrated

Graffiti artists are on the loose again, and the latest victim has cried foul over the policies in place at City Hall to deal with it.

A local resident called the News-Optimist to complain about his experience after his fence was tagged for the second time in the past four months, he said.

He received a summons to clean it off, but said he talked to City Hall requesting an extension of a couple more days to deal with the graffiti issue on his own.

What ended up happening, he said, was that the graffiti was cleaned up by the City’s crews over the long weekend instead.

The resident expressed frustration over the prospect of being billed for the cleanup, but said he had even more of an issue with graffiti on cement and power poles that was not cleaned up by the City at the same time. The individual also expressed frustration with rules requiring residents to clean up in the first place.

“They’re making criminals out of us and that’s b-----t,” the caller said. He questioned why it was “okay for the graffiti-artists to do the graffiti and not okay for us to leave it.”

The News-Optimist went down to the neighborhood to see the situation for ourselves last Monday afternoon. While there was not a lot of graffiti found, there was a black graffiti tag on one power pole in the back alley of 113th Street as well as red markings on a slab

of concrete on 11th Avenue and 113th Street.

In speaking to the News-Optimist on Wednesday, city manager Jim Puffalt said the individual’s concerns were known to the City and would be addressed.

Puffalt admitted the individual’s request for an extension did not get to bylaw enforcement as it should have, and indicated the individual will not be liable for the work that was done by the City. Puffalt also indicated the City would look into and address the graffiti on the cement slab and elsewhere.

Beyond that, the City manager was sympathetic to the concerns raised and pledged to look at some changes to the way the City deals with the graffiti issue.

The complainant’s experience “raised a whole bunch of questions where we need to look at a graffiti program and see if we could do something different,” said Puffalt.

He said North Battleford is looking at what other cities in Saskatchewan are doing on the issue.

“We are looking at the graffiti program to see if there are some modifications that could be made to it,” said Puffalt.

While changes could be coming, Puffalt made it known the need was still there for programs to clean up graffiti as soon as it shows up in the community.

“It’s really kind of that broken window syndrome – people see graffiti and it tends to increase the amount of graffiti,” said Puffalt. “If we don’t do something about it, it gives the impression that the City or the people don’t care about their property.”

“Aggressive driving is quite common for us to see,” said Sgt. Colin Glas with the Regina Police Service. “In one recent incident, we pulled over a driver going 149 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.”

That traffic stop ended with a Criminal Code charge of dangerous driving, but it could have been so much worse.

“We see it far too often, where people have no concern for other road users, they’re tailgating, passing vehicles on the right, zipping in between different lanes of travel,” said Sgt. Glas. “In all reality, they’re not getting to their destination faster, all they’re doing is creating more road hazards for other drivers. People need to drive with common courtesy, and remember that the slower the speed, the more time you have to react to a threat.”

ing is the traffic safety spotlight for the month of October. Police across the province will be on the lookout for violations such as: • speeding; • driving too fast for road conditions; • running red lights; • not stopping at stop signs; • stunting; • racing; • passing to the right on a highway.

In 2013, preliminary statistics suggest aggressive driving contributed to more than 11,000 collisions in Saskatchewan, resulting in 63 deaths and 4,112 injuries.

With a number of work zones still active in the province, police will also be watching for drivers speeding through work zones.

Work zone speed limits and rules vary by municipality. In highway work zones, drivers must slow to 60 km/h. Whether it’s a highway or municipal work zone, drivers should slow down and follow the directions of work zone signs and flag persons at all times.

Mercier said the project will continue to be something that can only work with community support, from getting contractors in a timely manner, then looking to hire staff and continue fundraising.

“It is in some sense a bittersweet thing that we have to open a homeless shelter,” said Mercier, “but yet it’s also a symbol of hope, that we value our neighbours and our friends, that these people matter and that dignity and respect is something everybody deserves.”

The area where ROC currently has its worship area will be virtually untouched, he said. Part of the purchase agreement is that they will continue to use it for services on Sunday evenings. During the week it will be used mainly as a common area served by the door in that area during the daytime.

At night, the entrance further to the west will be used and will open to a reception area.

There will be a nearby holding area where people who may pose a risk to those in the dorms can be contained.

Smoke reported – but no fire Staff Once again, Fire Prevention Week produced its share of excitement.

The good news is that while emergency crews were sent off into active duty again during the week they promot-

ed fire safety, on this instance there was no fire to report – just smoke and fumes from work done in a building.

Fire crews responded to an alarm at 8:33pm on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11403 Railway Avenue in North Battleford, where the fire alarms acti-

vated due to workmen in the building.

Fire department responded with one pumper and four firefighters, but while there was smoke, fumes and dust from the workmen, there was no fire. No damage or injuries were reported.

The recent cabinet changes have given Battlefords MLA Herb Cox some new responsibilities.

Cox is the new government whip in the legislature.

He was appointed to the role

by Premier Brad Wall last week.

Cox now has responsibility for making sure government MLAs are in the legislature during session.

He explained his duties include keeping track of those MLAs who might need to be absent from the legislature to tend to business in their constituency or, in the case of the cabinet, ministerialrelated functions.

“They co-ordinate those absences through my office, basically now, through the whip’s office, and that’s how you ensure attendance during session,” he told the NewsOptimist this week The role also includes helping co-ordinate management of the session with respect to speeches, and slotting people into the various spots, he said.

It’s a role that “basically allows you to become part of the leadership and management team for the caucus and the party.”

The position is one more step up in responsibility for Cox, who has now relinquished his position as chair of the Crowns and Central Agencies Committee. He remains a provincial delegate to the Pacific North West Economic Region and retains his position on the board for Crown Investments Corporation, as well as on the Caucus Management Committee and New Ideas Committee.

In a statement Premier Wall said Ottenbreit will be a strong member of cabinet.

“This portfolio is about listening to and understanding the concerns of rural communities, patients and health care providers,” said Wall.

“I know Greg will be a tireless worker when it comes to meeting with those individuals and bringing their health care concerns to the cabinet table.”

The Battlefords MLA expects a smooth transition and made clear government priorities remain the same.

“We’re going to maintain what our focus has been.

We’re going to continue on our growth agenda, and continue on handling the chal-

lenges of growth,” said Cox, who added the “challenges of growth are better than the challenges of decline.”

He was planning to head to Regina this week to learn more details of his new role and responsibilities.

Cox also looks ahead with interest to the arrival of Christine Tell, provincial minister of Corrections and Policing, for a noon speech at Caleb Village hosted by the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce Monday, Oct. 6.

“I’m really looking forward to that and hearing about some of the initiatives being worked on at the provincial government level, and can hopefully impact us in the Battlefords as well,” said Cox, who said he had been working on those initiatives for some time now.

After that, the fall session of the legislature is not far off, with the first day back being Oct. 22.

Staff Cocaine was seized during the search of a house on the 2100 block of 102nd Crescent in North Battleford Wednesday.

The Battlefords RCMP General Investigative Sections with assistance from the Battlefords Municipal Detachment executed a search warrant, which resulted in

the seizure of 47 grams of cocaine and other drug related evidence.

Two people have been charged in relation to the incident. 43-year-old Shel-

Initial investigation has revealed that there was a gathering at the same residence on the Moosomin First

Maidstone Husky Gas Station sometime between 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1 and 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2.

The suspects proceeded to break the locks on the tanks. Approximately 200 litres of diesel and 100 litres of gasoline were stolen. The approximate amount incurred was $400.

Crusaders lose late against undefeated Delisle Rebels Crusaders exchanged scoreless drives, John Paul II started a drive from midfield with seven minutes left to play. Schmidt, who took over for Wasmuth at quarterback, found Loeppky wide open on the right side of the field for a 33-yard gain. Stynsky kept the ball on the ground, but was unable to pick up the third-down conversion.

However, the Rebels were given a penalty, setting up the Crusaders with a first down from the Rebels’ goal line.

John Paul II was stopped when they tried running up the middle on first and second down. On their third and final attempt, Schmidt pitched the ball to Stynsky who ran the ball on the right for the score.

Rebels quarterback James Shirley rushed for a go-ahead touchdown with 2:12 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Delisle a 29-16 win over the John Paul II Crusaders in their final home game Thursday night.

Delisle tacked on a touchdown with under a minute left to stay undefeated with a 13-point win.

“We were right there with the top team in our conference,” said Crusaders coach Bruce Yockey. “I’m proud of the way we played today.”

It was a tight, defensive game for the first half in cold, windy conditions. Neither team were able to get anything going offensively as the defences held them in check for the first quarter.

On a drive that started with a minute left in the first quarter, Delisle broke the deadlock with seven minutes left in the first half. The Rebels kept the ball on the ground for the majority of the drive as Sam Michnik and Reid Dubkowski combined for 61 yards of rushing, setting Delisle up at the Crusaders’ five-yard line. Shirley capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to Dubkowski for a 7-0 lead.

The Crusaders responded on their next drive, which started with great field position after a penalty on the kickoff. Tailback Jacob Stynsky and quarterback Tyler Wasmuth ran the ball for most of the drive.

Then, Wasmuth found Riley

Loeppky for 16 yards to get the Crusaders into the red zone. Stynsky finished off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run. Wasmuth connected with Jared Schmidt for a successful two-point conversion and an 8-7 lead.

A turnover on the ensuing kickoff set up the Crusaders with great field position.

Dubkowski returned the ball to the Crusaders’ 45-yard line before Stynsky ripped the ball away from him. However, John Paul II was unable to capitalize. A poor snap resulted in the ball rolling past Wasmuth, who dove for the ball and collided with Jake

Middleton on the ground, who recovered the ball for the Rebels. Wasmuth was shaken up on the play. He left the game and did not return.

In the second half, the strong defensive play continued. Late in the third quarter, the Rebels took the lead again. After Shirley found Joshua Kemp for 26 yards, the Rebels returned to the ground game as Michnik and Dubkowski marched the team down the field. A penalty set up the Rebels on the goal line where Shirley plunged into the end zone for a 15-8 lead.

On the second attempt, Schmidt found Loeppky again for a successful conversion and a 16-15 lead with 3:12 to play.

Yockey said they did not lose anything in the passing game when Schmidt replaced the injured Wasmuth, but it puts players in unfamiliar positions.

“Jared has a good arm and throws the ball well. But what it does is, Jared’s a good fullback, a good two-back for us, and an excellent receiver.

And so we did kind of lose that possession receiver that made us put some guys into positions they aren’t totally familiar with all the time.”

Despite the loss, Yockey said there were many positives to take from the game, including the play of the defence.

“I thought our defence played really well. They did an excellent job making great plays, some good tackles.”

John Paul II (0-4) continues to search for their first win of the season when they play Thursday afternoon in Kindersley.

‘Renewed sense of optimism’ for Riders after loss to Stamps 14102MA00

It’s tough to tell exactly why Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Corey Chamblin was so furious after Friday’s 31-24 home loss to the Calgary Stampeders. That’s simply because he was very guarded and measured in his postgame comments as his club fell to 9-5 with four games remaining in the 2014 CFL regular season.

There’s plenty to be upset about, but there’s plenty to be encouraged by as well. The Roughriders’ offensive woes continued going into the Calgary game, one week after the team was shutout 24-0 in Edmonton for their first blanking in 28 years. Chamblin said he was going with his “gut” in starting rookie Seth Doege at quarterback, his first pro start. That move didn’t pay off, as the Texas Tech grad fired three first half interceptions and was replaced by sophomore Tino Sunseri.

Perhaps he was upset

about that.

The Riders were down 9-0 at halftime against Calgary on Friday and sunk to 24-0 in the third quarter. Quite frankly things were looking grim for the rest of the game at that point, and maybe even for the rest of this season, with injured quarterback Darian Durant helplessly looking on from the sidelines.

But somewhere along the way, the Rider offense caught a spark. Sunseri hooked up with rookie wideout Dan DePalma for a 66-yard catch-and-run touchdown late in the third

quarter which ended the Riders’ shutout streak at 103:48.

You likely saw the game, but the Riders went on a tear from that point on, tying the game 24-24. But with 4:00 remaining, they were facing a 3rd-and-2 situation at the Calgary 50-yard line. Despite having momentum on their side, Chamblin elected to yank his offense off the field and punt. The Stamps took over at their 25-yard line and marched the length of the field to score the winning points.

AAA Stars sweep weekend set in Yorkton against Maulers

The Battlefords AAA Stars swept both games played in Yorkton against the RawTec Maulers last weekend.

The Stars scored three unanswered goals to come from behind and beat the Maulers 3-2 Friday night.

Austin Shumanski opened the game’s scoring for Yorkton 1:38 into the first period when he beat Stars goaltender Brett Pongracz. Cole Keenleyside and Drayson Skulmoski picked up assists on the goal.

Five minutes later, Yorkton struck again. Logan Casavant found the back of the net 6:30 into the first period with assists from Skulmoski and Brennan Watson to make it a 2-0 game.

With 7:20 to play in the first, the Stars cut the Maulers’ lead in half. Derek Frater put the puck past Yorkton goalie Carter Phair for his first goal of the year. Layne Young and Tyler Baier were given assists on the goal.

Before the end of the first, the Stars tied the game.

Young scored his first of the year, beating Phair with 2:32 to play. Frater and Brandon Lesko registered assists.

In the second period, the Stars took their first lead of the game 4:12 into the frame.

Kyle Salaway scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Kaelen Holt, putting the Stars up 3-2.

Pongracz took the Stars the rest of the way. He stopped all 12 shots faced in the third period to preserve the lead and give the Stars a 3-2 win.

Michael Statchuk scored 1:46 into overtime to give the Battlefords North Stars a 4-3 win over the Ice Wolves in La Ronge Friday night.

The North Stars have won four straight games.

Three of those four have come in overtime or a shootout.

The Ice Wolves got on the board early in the first period.

Jared Iron’s first goal of the season beat North Stars goaltender Spencer Tremblay.

Kyle Campbell and Cole Porter registered assists.

Jackson Bond responded with this first goal as a North Star five minutes later when he put the puck past La Ronge goalie Kris Joyce.

Assists were awarded to Jordan Townsend and Nick Fountain.

La Ronge regained their one-goal lead with 4:55 left to play in the opening frame.

Kelsey-Stern plunged into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown. Kelsey-Stern then found Brett McMurtry to convert on the two-point attempt to put Bedford Road up 8-7.

Later in the second, Shaefer put the Vikings in the lead. He rushed for an eight-yard touchdown, giving NBCHS a 14-8 lead at the half.

The Vikings put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Aimoe completed a five-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Legacy. After a failed conversion, the Vikings led 20-8.

In the fourth quarter, Kelsey-Stern closed the gap with a 54-yard touchdown run. The Redhawks converted their two-point attempt to make it a 20-15 game. However, the Vikings were able to hang on for the win.

The Vikings (1-3) are in action again Thursday night on the road when they take on the Evan Hardy Souls. Kickoff is 3 p.m. at Saskatoon Minor Football Field.

NBCHS returns home for their last game of the regular season Oct. 15 for a match up against the Mount Royal Mustangs. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Junior Vikings lost their second game of the season Sunday afternoon, dropping a 31-12 game to the Schoenhals Titans at Beaver Lions Stadium.

The Titans opened the scoring on their first offensive play. Adam LaBrash broke off a long run for the touchdown.

The Vikings responded with a touchdown on their next series. Quarterback Damon Dutton found Zach Wolfe on a long touchdown pass. However, they missed the two-point conversion attempt.

The Titans were driving in

the second quarter. Vikings defender Tyson Tuck ended the Titans’ drive with an interception in the end zone, keeping it a 7-6 game.

On the last play of the half, the Titans added to their lead.

Quarterback Josh Stobbe connected with LaBrash for the touchdown and a 14-6 lead.

In the second half, LaBrash showed a different aspect of his game when he kicked a field goal to put the Titans up 17-6. On another fieldgoal attempt near the end of the third quarter, the Titans bobbled the snap. LaBrash recovered and completed a

touchdown pass to Keagan White, putting the Titans up 24-6.

The Vikings cut the lead in half midway through the fourth quarter. Dutton found Presley Peterson for a long touchdown. After a missed two-point conversion, the Vikings trailed 24-12.

Late in the fourth, the Titans tacked on another touchdown to seal the 31-12 win.

The loss drops the Vikings to a record of 4-2.

They continue their schedule Wednesday night on the road against the Babineau Warriors. Kickoff is under the lights at 8:15 p.m

Delainey, North Stars shine at SJHL Showcase in Warman Submitted The Battlefords North Stars, like the rest of the teams in the SJHL, had a few days off between regular season games due to the SJHL Showcase in Warman.

The North Stars were well represented at the showcase, which had reportedly more than 70 scouts ranging from the SJHL, WHL, NCAA and NHL Central Scouting. The format included six teams of SJHL players (19 and 20

year olds, 17 and 18 year olds and 17 and 16 year olds) and, new this year, four teams made up of Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League players.

Reed Delainey, who has been off to a hot start this

season, had an impressive two days in Warman. He was just one of three SJHL players to record three points in two games. Delainey had a goal and two assists while playing with Team Orange, which was a perfect 2-0.

Delainey’s early season linemate Matt Saharchuk played with Team Blue and picked up two assists. Brady O’Sullivan, the third member of the top offensive line for the North Stars, was also at the showcase and had two as-

sists while playing with Team Blue. Regan Yew played one game and had two goals for Team Blue as a replacement player.

Matt Havens was on Delainey’s squad. Havens registered a goal and an assist in his two games. Brenden Heinrich and Kendall Fransoo each picked up an assist.

The North Stars also had strong showings from defencemen Jake Erickson, Michael Statchuk and Connor Sych and team

captain forward Ryne Keller.

First-year goaltender Ryan Rewerts also played in the showcase, splitting time in the Team Black net.

The showcase is a great opportunity to expose scouts from across North America to players in the SJHL and Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

The showcase was a key to former North Star Blake Young receiving a scholarship to the University of Minnesota Duluth last season.

It was a scoreless third period. Tremblay stopped nine shots, while Joyce made 13 saves.

In the overtime period, Statchuk’s overtime winner was his second goal of the season. Townsend recorded his third assist of the night to set it up.

The North Stars registered

the only two shots on goal in the extra frame.

Tremblay made 34 saves while picking up his third win of the season. Joyce stopped 25 shots for his second loss of the year.

The North Stars (4-1-1-0) will attempt to keep their momentum going Tuesday night when they welcome the Kindersley Klippers (2-0-01) into the Civic Centre. It will be just the second home game for the North Stars in the first three weeks of the SJHL schedule.

Yah, that might be the reason why he was so ticked off. But in the final minute, the Riders held the Stampeders to a field goal and reasonably had a chance to win the game, but a penalty on that field goal gave Calgary a first down and quarterback Drew Tate promptly put it in the end zone to significantly hinder

the Riders’ chance at a comeback.

Lesson learned. But I have a tough time thinking Saskatchewan will make these errors in the playoffs and they’re just a week or two away from nailing down a berth as it is. They may not even have to win another game, given the pace at which B.C. and Winnipeg are losing games behind them.

A loss stinks, but I walked out of that energetic stadium Friday evening with a renewed sense of optimism around this football club. Depending on who you believe, Darian Durant may or may not be coming back this season, but at least we now know this team can score points without him. Sunseri seems to have found his mojo and, against any other CFL team, they’d probably win that game Friday night. If they want to win back-to-back Grey Cups, they’re going to have

to go through Calgary and Friday’s game served notice the Riders won’t fade away.

Chamblin can see it too, however the Riders’ sideline boss just wishes it was coming around a little more quickly.

They married and moved to the farm near Cut Knife, Saskatchewan, where she resided until her passing. Nursing then took a backseat to being a wife and raising a family. After a tragic farm accident resulting in Lloyd’s death, she married the loving man who stood by her side through thick and thin, right to her last breath, Michael Mason. Together they raised their five children, two boys and three girls. Alberta loved the Lord with all her heart and never hesitated to share that love with all she came in contact with.

She was very involved in helping with kids’ club and Sunday School at her church, right up until her final days. She was a prayer warrior and prayed for her kids, grandkids, family, and friends every day.

She loved to garden and for years had a big garden that she shared with everyone. She enjoyed travelling around the country to visit family and friends. Mike and Alberta took great pride in being a part of celebrating each birthday and anniversary of each child and grandchild. Alberta was predeceased by her first husband Lloyd McGill; father Reuben Bartman; sister Joyce Bartman; in-laws Orville and Hazel McGill, and Harry and Florence Mason. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 30 years, Michael Mason; son Neil (Brandi), daughter Marlene (Al), son Mervin (Sabrina), daughter Linda (Tim), daughter Dawn (Devin). Alberta loved her grandchildren: Jenessa (Cristopher), Dakota, Fawn, Eli, Ethan, Madison, and Mackenna. MCMILLAN: Irene McMillan (nee May), a former resident of North Battleford, Sask. and more recently of Victoria, BC passed peacefully in her sleep on September 5, 2014 at the age of 92. Left to hold her in their hearts are daughters Maylene and Marcia McMillan, grandsons Lucas and Beau Parker, and son-in-law Daniel Parker, all of Victoria. She was predeceased by her husband, Duncan McMillan, in 1985. Irene started her career as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse on the prairies and ended it as the VicePrincipal of Cairns School in North Battleford. Upon retirement she enjoyed winters in Yuma, Arizona and summers at the cottage at Jackfish Lake - often driving between the two on her own, well into her seventies. She moved to Victoria to be closer to her daughters and was a wonderful caring grandmother to her two grandsons.

Irene lived a full life and touched many with her compassion and generosity. She enjoyed baking and preserving, growing things, exercising, dancing, and golfing, and was ever ready to lend a hand to those in need. She was a hard worker who was always on the go yet managed to adapt to her final years of infirmity with grace and equanimity. Right to the end she could light up the room with her smile. Flo, and her twin brother Lawrence, were born into a farming family on July 17, 1927 in Battleford, SK, to Evison and Johanna Denton. She attended Red Pheasant (Bjelde Creek) School, leaving after the eighth grade, to help on the family farm.

Travelling by train to British Columbia in the late 40’s, Flo, with her two girlfriends, first stopped to pick berries in the Mt. Lehman area before proceeding to Port Alberni. In 1948 she started at the new Woodward’s store in the grocery department, making many lifelong friends. After marrying Ray in 1950, she stayed with Woodward’s until 1955, leaving to start her new career as mother and housewife, a role she cherished always. Her home was always open to neighbours, friends and family, beginning with Ray on Melrose Street, continuing on 11th Avenue, and the finally with Jack on Burde Street. Flo was considered a “second mother” to many – neighbours, relatives and friends of her own children – who came into her life. “Flo will be greatly missed and forever loved by her family and friends”. Wine and gratitude travel together in many cultures How is it that Made in China plastic Halloween paraphernalia can occupy stores in early September a month before Thanksgiving, two months before Halloween? I guess cobwebs, candies and grotesque costumes are an easier sell than a gratitudebased holiday. Let’s face it: the notion of thanksgiving is a bit of a commercial dud.

The advertising industry stokes and thrives on dissatisfaction – one never has enough, therefore you need this … and this … and this.

Thanksgiving assumes, for however brief a moment, gratitude-induced contentment.

It’s interesting how wine and gratitude seem to travel together in so many cultures. Someone’s life, some past event or circumstances, some present reunion of acquaintances, friends or family around a meal - all imply gratitude. This is why wine is at its best when it’s communal, when it invites others to share and participate in what we are thankful for.

Like other alcoholic beverages, wine is at its worst when it is used for escape and manipulation.

As well, feasting and gratitude often travel together.

There’s two turkey times per year in our home: Thanksgiving and Christmas. And while I enjoy the turkey (especially the darker meat), it’s really the other stuff on the plate that gets me salivating: the dressing, the vegetables,

the gravy, the salads. In our home, family get-togethers and celebrations like Thanksgiving deserve a nice bottle of wine.

Turkey is a challenge to pair with wine. More accurately, it’s really all the other food items that accompany the turkey that present the “wild card” to good pairing with wine: jellied and nutty salads, creamed turnips and curried beans, lentils, sage with apple dressing, and Aunt Doris’ pickled beets. Wow! How does any one wine dance with all that?!

So from my experience, here are some wine related tips for traditional turkey dinners and wine. First some cautions: - Generally, big, dense red wines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, etc.) are best paired with dense red meats, cheeses and thick cream sauces, not poultry.

- Cranberry and pickles are to wine, what kryptonite is to Superman – deadly.

Cranberry acidity and pickles’ vinegar will kill the most exquisite of wines. If they’re

on the plate make sure you have some bread or a fork full of potatoes or dressing before you have a swallow of wine.

Here are the kinds of wines that can work nicely: - Oaked Chardonnays (fermentation and/or maturing takes place in oak barrels) have a fruity and buttery quality - Bright ripe fruit of quality Rieslings with varying amounts of residual grape sweetness - Lighter, fruity reds like Pinot Noirs - Drier style Rosé wines - Drier style Sparkling wine, etc.

Torreon de Paredes Reserve Chardonnay – Chile ($16.95 – ID# 6615). I understand why wine writer, James Romanow (a.k.a. “Dr. Booze”) labelled this Chardonnay the best of a group of Chardonnays he tried.

Brothers, Alvaro and Javier Paredes are very determined in their pursuit of the best wine from the healthiest grapes. Older vines along with 8-10 months maturing in French oak barrels brings out beautiful creamy, vanilla and tropical fruit notes. Drift away with this one.

Destinea Sauvignon Blanc 2012 - France ($17.46 – ID#11758). I’m afraid I’m hooked on this white wine from the birthplace of the Sauvignon Blanc grape in the Loire Valley of France. The beautiful ripe citrus and floral notes along with its pinpoint

accurate crispness (otherwise known as totally balanced acidity) makes this wine much more refreshing and widely food friendly than its New Zealand counterparts, in my opinion. Poultry, pork, lake and seafood, goat cheese and as a starter drink before the meal.

Selbach Detzemer Maximiner Klosterlay Riesling Spatlese 2012/13 - Germany ($19.54 – ID# 6065). Winemaker: Johannes Selbach.

Don’t let the German description frighten you! – it locates where the grapes come from near the village of Detzem.

This wine has done more to turn Saskatchewan toward the rich, ripe honeyed fruit of mature, balanced Rieslings than almost any other wine.

Bring on the almost anything on the Thanksgiving dinner menu including poultry, ham, pork ribs, curries, vegetables and far-out sauces ……or just by itself.

Reduce the risk of foodborne illness during Thanksgiving

By Health Canada Food is an important part of many holiday celebrations.

You can help reduce the risk of foodborne illness for your family and friends by following some basic food safety tips.

Health Effects: The most common symptoms of food poisoning are stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. Most people recover completely from foodborne illness, but some groups are at greater risk of serious health effects, like kidney problems and even death. The groups at greater risk are young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

General Food Safety Tips: There are four basic steps you should always follow to help reduce the risk of foodborne illness: 1. Clean: Wash hands, contact surfaces (like kitchen counters) and utensils often to avoid the spread of bacteria.

2. Separate: Keep raw foods separate from cooked and ready-to-eat foods to avoid cross-contamination.

3. Cook: Use an instant-read digital thermometer and cook to these internal temperatures: • 85°C (185°F) for whole poultry • 74°C (165°F) for stuffing, casseroles, leftovers, egg dishes, ground turkey and ground chicken, including sausages containing poultry meat • 71°C (160°F) for pork chops, ribs and roasts, and for ground beef, ground pork and ground veal, including sausages • at least 63°C (145°F) for all whole muscle beef and veal cuts, like steaks and roasts 4. Chill: Keep cold foods cold. Bacteria can grow rapidly when food is allowed to sit in the so-called danger zone: between 4°C (40°F) and 60°C (140°F).

6:48 a.m. – Complaint of an unwanted person at an address on 110th Street. A man was intoxicated and the complainant wished for him to be picked up by police.

12:00 p.m. – Complaint of threats being made over Facebook. Investigation is ongoing.

12:28 p.m. – Complaint of a youth being bear sprayed outside a business on 110th Street while on lunch hour from school. Very little detail provided in regards to a possible suspect, direction of travel and so on. Members made extensive patrols, however results were negative.

Investigation is ongoing at this time.

1:35 p.m. – Complaint of three intoxicated men outside of the hospital harassing patients/clients. Members attended one of the three was intoxicated and arrested on outstanding warrants. The other two were told to move along.

1:39 p.m. – Complaint of shoplifting approximately $100 worth of baby formula from a grocery store. One woman arrested for theft and released for court.

5:31 p.m. – Complaint of windows being smashed out of vehicle at an address on 99th Street. No suspects.

Complainant left the address in the morning and returned to find the damage.

5:58 p.m. – Complaint of an intoxicated man outside the liquor store yelling at customers. Members attended and the man was arrested for breaching his court ordered conditions of no alcohol consumption. Lodged in cells until sober and released for court.

6:49 p.m. – Complaint of an assault at an address on 110th Street. Members attended and the suspect had left the address previous to police arriving. This matter is still under investigation.

7:33 p.m. – Complaint of assault at an address on St. Laurent Drive. Two intoxicated brothers were beating up a younger sober brother.

Members attended. One intoxicated brother was located and arrested for breaching court ordered conditions and assault. The other brother fled before police arrived. This investigation is ongoing.

9:05 p.m. – Complaint of break and enter into an address on 99th Street. The complainant advised that she left the residence for a

3:21 a.m. – Complaint of a few adult men banging on windows and yelling outside an address on 107th Street.

Members attended and no one was located at the address or in the area.

At the end of September 2014 a monument in McPhail Park, North Battleford, Saskatchewan was vandalized along with many of the trees.

The City of North Battleford and/or the RCMP are looking for the public’s assistance in solving this incident.

The exciting prospect of a return engagement Occasionally we may see an advertisement for a play or a musical group that says, “Back for a return engagement, by popular demand.”

The earlier performance was enjoyed by many, and they called for more. But some returns are welcomed, and others are not.

During the deadly and destructive conflict now known as the First World War, author H. G. Wells introduced the phrase, “the war to end war.”

It was used many times over the duration of the conflict, sometimes hopefully – would this war actually end all war? Other times cynically, mocking the idea that there could ever be a world with no conflicts. Reality struck war weary Europe two decades later with a second “war to end war.”

A return engagement the Bible speaks about frequently, with joyful anticipation, is the second coming of Christ. Jesus Himself told His followers: “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also..” (Jn. 14:3) And at the very moment of His ascension back into heaven, angelic messengers announced, “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

At His first coming, the purpose of the Lord Jesus was to suffer and die for our sins. “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Mk. 10:45; I Cor. 15:3) But the Scriptures teach that He will return, one day soon, to take up His earthly rule (Rev. 19:11-16). First came the work of redemption. Next will come the “return engagement,” and His messianic reign. First the cross, then the crown.

The two comings are prophesied in the Old Testament as well–both His reign (Isa. 9:6-7), and His death (Isa. 53:8-9). But that caused some real puzzlement. How could the Messiah die, and also reign forever? Some ancient rabbis concluded that there must be two Messiahs

coming –one to reign and one to die. The mystery is solved, now, by the resurrection of Christ.

That too was hinted at in the Old Testament. David says of Him, “Nor will You allow Your Holy One [a messianic title] to see corruption [in the grave].” (Ps. 16:10) After prophesying about Christ’s suffering and death (Isa. 53:3-9), and how He’d be “cut off from the land of the living,” Isaiah continues, “When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed [His spiritual offspring], He shall prolong His days ... He shall see the labour of His soul and be satisfied.” (vs. 10-11) Christians eagerly anticipate Christ’s return. We are “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us

the wrath to come.” (I Thess.

1:9-10) In 1957, a song on that theme was written by John Willard Peterson (1921-2006) Mr. Peterson is probably the most influential hymn writer of the latter part of the twentieth century. Certainly among the most prolific. By the time of his death, he had written well over a thousand songs,

both words and music, as well as 35 cantatas and musicals.

The present song says, “Marvelous message we bring, / Glorious carol we sing, / Wonderful word of the King: / Jesus is coming again! / Standing before Him at last, / Trial and trouble all past, / Crowns at His feet we will cast: / Jesus is coming again!”

Writing a prayer I love words. My fascination with them began as a child and to this day, playing with them, kicking sentences around and arranging the shape of articles into an intelligent and thought-provoking commentary delights me.

Looking back over the past two decades I am fascinated with the directions my words have taken. From researching and co-writing background material for investors to these short weekly pieces and a lot in between, I’ve learned a lot.

On the other hand, while reading the works of some of my writing heroes brings great enjoyment (you know who you are), I’ve noticed they provide a temptation to jealousy. “Oh, I’d like to write like…” crosses my mind,

demanding a quick prayer for resistance to the lure of envy and stirring a dogged determination to improve my skills. In all that, this has become increasingly clear to me - there are some things that simply can’t be expressed in words. Here are some of those situations: “Please pray for me, a family member has passed away.” Would you remember to pray for those affected by Ebola?” “I’ve lost my job and we might lose our home.” A

promise to pray can be quickly voiced but the commitment to actually remembering to do so requires much diligence.

Along with many other things he wrote, I love this quote by John Bunyan: “In prayer rather let your heart be without words than your words without heart.”

Prayer demands focus, communication and time; writing, like prayer, requires disciplined expression of matters concerning the heart.

Stephen Crotts put it this way: “God has editing rights over our prayers. He will…edit them, correct them, bring them in line with His will and then hand them back to us to be resubmitted.” “…one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray…’” (Luke 11:1)
