MoneySense skewers NB again as a place to live

North Battleford, Sask.

Once again, MoneySense doesn’t think much of North Battleford as a place to live.

The online personal finance magazine published its annual ranking of Canada’s Best Places to Live Wednesday. Out of 415 communities in Canada, North Battleford finished a dismal 333rd in 2018.

It is the exact same overall finish as last year.

According to MoneySense’s methodology, North Battleford’s top features are low taxes, home affordability and health accessibility.

But the rest of the categories dragged down North Battleford’s score.

The methodology used by MoneySense also considers factors such as demographics, the commute,

weather, amenities, culture and community, wealth and economy and crime.

North Battleford also did not fare well in the regional categories. Among cities in the prairie provinces (Saskatchewan and Manitoba), North Battleford finished 19th out of 22. Among Saskatchewan cities alone, North Battleford was second from the bottom, ahead only of Yorkton.

The best city in the prairie region to live, according to MoneySense, is still Weyburn. This is the second year in a row Weyburn topped the region, but it did slip down in the national ranking to 33rd overall.

Saskatoon finished second among prairie cities and 60th nationwide.

Overall, Oakville, Ont. was named the best place to live in all of Canada, with Ottawa second.

Lisa Hornung: Everybody has a STORY Plaid and ponytail

Local vocalist Lisa Hornung said she hasn’t counted the number of times she’s sung Handel’s Messiah in front of audiences, estimating it’s been in the hundreds.

But she isn’t exactly sure.

Why she hasn’t kept track, Hornung said, is “maybe because truly deep down, I’m a plaid and ponytail girl.”

After a performance, rather than tallying, Hornung said her thought process is “Ooof, I got through that. Now I’m going to go see my kids or walk my dog.”

Hornung has sung classical music across the United States and Europe.

She has settled in North Battleford, where she grew up, with husband John and twin children James and Larissa. Hornung said her family is supportive of her singing.

In addition to North Battleford, Hornung also grew up on different First Nations, including Moosomin First Nation.

Her father worked with Indian and Northern Affairs. Hornung moved to North Battleford when she was in Grade 3.

Hornung attended school at St. Mary, Holy Family (which used to be St. John’s) and Convent of the Child Jesus for high school.

Hornung said she comes from a musical family: her great-grandfather was a

renowned violin maker, her grandfather played the violin and her dad plays the accordion. Church music was important, too. She remembers singing Little Rabbit Foo Foo at a Christmas concert.

At the age of 12, Hornung was getting ready to sing. An aunt, Bernadette Fanner, suggested taking lessons.

“I was devastated,” Hornung said. “To a 12-year-old that meant you were no good.”

After realizing the comment was a compliment rather than an insult, Hornung began taking lessons with local vocal teacher Edith Scott.

The University of Saskatchewan followed, and Hornung earned a Bachelor of Music degree in voice performance. She also trained with Richard Best at Southern Illinois University and in Italy. With the help of a grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, Hornung also spent a year travelling and working with coaches, teachers, singers and accompanists, which she described as “a great way to do professional development.”

and sings professionally, particularly Handel’s Messiah, the piece with its famous hallejuah chorus, her favourite orchestral work.

Hornung has performed the piece with a number of different groups over the years, including with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, with whom she collaborates once or twice a year.

“Oratorio singing is kind of a niche that isn’t easy to get into, but that I was very fortunate to and my voice fits well,” Hornung said.

Hornung is a contralto, “the lowest of the lady’s voices.” She said contralto voices take a long time to develop.

Hornung said having “a career as I did, starting from such a young age, was a real blessing and not common particularly for this colour of voice.”

The nice side, Hornung said, is that a contralto voice lasts a long time.

Hornung said her voice now is coming into its own.

Another genre of music in which she’s interested is the Negro spiritual. The music is often lumped in with gospel or jazz, although gospel and jazz often derive from original spirituals.

Hornung said her favourite person to do any kind of folk or spiritual music with is Gary Gansauge.

“He gets it at a level that is so intimate for the music,” Hornung said.

“It’s like one instrument when we get to work together.”

School for Solo Voice

Another of Hornung’s projects is the Summer School for Solo Voice, which has been in existence for 21 years. According to research by Mark Turner, executive director of Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the program is the first like it in the country.

Hornung said everyone can participate and the school brings a lot of people to the Battlefords. Outof-towners stay with billet families, which, Hornung said, are generous.

Participants attend a number of different sessions, perform in choirs, and attend classes with performers and experts. Other classes explore the aging voice, vocal techniques, posture, room acoustics and performance anxiety.

business side of musical performance. Recitals take place throughout the week.

Many local businesses and organizations help keep the cost of attending the school low, Hornung said.

One instructor Hornung brings is Dr. Rick GoreHickman, a head and neck specialist and surgeon.

“Singers can’t actually see their instrument, so to be able to see what’s happening and understand is so invaluable,” Hornung said.

“If you listen to yourself on a recording,” Hornung said, “what we hear inside our head is different from what we hear outside of our head.”

“If we sing to satisfy what we’re hearing inside of our head, it’s not going to satisfy the audience,” Hornung said, adding singing to satisfy what one hears in one’s head results in singing with bad technique.

Hornung has had to get used to singing properly, which she said made her voice sound thinner.

An Ephemeral Art

Music is an ephemeral art, and music’s nuance and detail often happen at a level for performers that audiences don’t always understand or catch onto.

Relationships between performers are important, too.

About Gansauge, Hornung said “he is so intuitive with his music that I don’t think [the audience] understands why they’re so moved.”

A song’s sheet music is the same for any performance, but performers and the live experience makes each performance unique. “[Music is] always being created in that moment,” Hornung said, “so

whatever grouping you have — different people in an orchestra, a different person at the piano, a different person at the podium conducting … different life experiences — they all affect how the music is going to come out, and that’s one of the things that is the most terrifying and the most exciting and the most fulfilling about music.”

Live is Better

Hornung maintains while recorded music is “wonderful,” experiencing it live is better.

“I often will say to people, if you can pay $20 for a CD, and listen to it thousands of times, or pay twice that or more to go see someone live, what are you going to be thrilled about?”

Hornung said the latter.

“Why? Because there is that creation happening at the moment that will never be the same.

“There is something so thrilling about being part of the magic creation at that moment and at that time,” Hornung said.

The exciting and attractive experience of live music, Hornung said, explains “why people will pay $250 to see The Eagles instead of 99 cents on iTunes, and they will tell you it was worth it because it did something, because they were there as part of that time that will never happen again.”

A Vibrant Arts Scene

Hornung said the Battlefords arts scene is unique, be it dance, drama, classical singing or piano, jazz groups, bands, visual arts and photography. The level of talent is impressive, she said, as is the level of support.

“I think it gets overlooked from outside,” Hornung said, “but I

think part of that is because within our own community, people don’t realize that it’s unusual and special.”

“I think they’re coming to understand that more and more over the years,” Hornung said, adding artists have a responsibility to make people more culturally aware.

“Toronto maybe has this much talent and phenomenal teaching and this many great groups, but Toronto is an import city.”

“We grow them here.”

Hornung said she’s been offered money to move the school elsewhere, but she’s always refused and insisted on keeping the school in the community.

Teaching keeps her in good shape, she said. A gratifying part of her career is watching members of the Community Youth Choir grow up, then help the younger members.

The life of a performer can be a stressful one, and Hornung said she’s heard that performance anxiety can be higher than that of a jet pilot’s.

“If you’re not prepared, it’s very frightening,” Hornung said. “Any performance for me, I get nervous about, but I honestly believe being nervous means you really care.”

In the fall, Hornung said she’s putting on a local concert with Gary Gansauge.

Hornung said she’s very proud of the Battlefords and Saskatchewan.

“People think it’s a bigger deal to sing in Saskatoon or New York, that’s never been the case for me,” Hornung said. “I get just as nervous, probably more so, here because I know everybody and I want to give just as much, if not more.”

The drive-in is alive and well in BC

My annual summer vacation to the Okanagan region of British Columbia included something different this year.

This year we took a trip to the drive-in! Yes, my family, including my two nieces, hit the road to Enderby, B.C. for a night watching a movie at the Starlight Drive-In. This was the first time I had been to a drive-in movie at an actual drivein in years — not counting these one-night outdoor movies that have turned up in North Battleford the last few years. The last time I’d been to a real drive-in movie theatre must have been in the early 1980s near Saskatoon, so I was really looking forward to going to a drive-in again. I was not disappointed.

The movie we saw was The Incredibles 2, a Disney-PIXAR production. I can definitely recommend this movie to those of you with families. My nieces were still raving about it

when they got home.

While this movie claims to be a “Disney” release, it really does seem more like a “Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera” production. Like the “Cars” series before it and the “Incredibles” movies clearly take their inspiration from Saturday morning cartoons.

As prime example of that, there was a scene where the kids watch an episode of Jonny Quest on the television. From what I’ve read, director Brad Bird was a big fan of Jonny Quest, so he wanted to pay tribute to that TV show.

Good stuff.

We did not stay for the second half of the double feature, which was Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. We felt it might be too scary for the kids. Still, we had gotten our money’s worth.

The Starlight took me back to an earlier time, when drive-ins were all the rage throughout North America and doublefeatures were common at both indoor and outdoor cinemas.

The fact that we were outdoors gave us a chance to take part in some outdoor activities before the movie began. Other patrons had brought along Nerf footballs to toss to each other before the movie. My nieces brought their soccer ball and kicked it around in front of the big screen, reputed to be the biggest in North America.

According to their website, the screen is 6,000 square feet, and its dimensions are 50 by 120 feet.

For watching the movie, you had the opportunity to either sit outdoors in your lawn chairs or watch from inside your vehicle. The one difference from the old days is that you no longer have to roll down your windows to set up clunky speakers providing the audio, always an open invitation for mosquitoes. Here, you could hear the audio by way of an FM signal on your car radio.

From what I gather, the Starlight is packed every night it is open. It is not far from Vernon and Salmon Arm, and is within close

driving range of Kelowna and Kamloops, so it has a big population base to draw on.

This was the only drivein in the entire region, so if you live in Kelowna or Kamloops and want to see a drive-in movie, you hit the road for Enderby. That makes this drive-in not simply a movie venue but also a tourist attraction.

The other thing that helps is that Enderby is a small community, and the drive-in is its only movie venue. If you want to see a movie in Enderby, the place to go is the Starlight.

The main thing this venue has going for it is that there is a pent-up demand to watch movies outdoors. Everyone I talk to has fond memories of going to the drive-in, and there is a big nostalgia factor.

This particular venue played up their “retro” appeal, with retro Pepsi-Cola signs visible and especially cheesy drive-in intermission ads that were straight out of the 1960s. These ads urge you to go to the concession for drinks and

popcorn.

The bottom line for me is that it was simply fun to go watch a movie at a real, permanent drive-in again after so many years. I was reminded of why I like the movies in the first place.

In fact, I realize I’ve gotten jaded over the years from all the annoyances and stupid rules and regulations associated with indoor movie theatres. The drive-in experience has indoor theatres beat in several ways.

For one thing, you can actually use your mobile devices during the movie.

Here we are, living in a social media world where people are always using their cellphones to call each other, text each other, take selfies or look at Facebook or Twitter. Yet at traditional multiplexes, you’re always being told by management to shut the devices off. It’s annoying.

At the drive-in, you can use mobile devices any time, in the privacy of your vehicles, without fear of ticking off your fellow moviegoers or anyone in management. Just make

sure the screens aren’t too bright, and make sure you aren’t using your devices to take video of the movie.

Piracy is still a big crime.

Here’s another advantage. The drive-ins are a heck of a lot less crowded than your average multiplex. Having to fight lineups of people is always the worst part of going to a cinema. Then, once you get in, you then have to worry that you might accidentally kick the seat in the row in front of you.

At this drive-in, you don’t have any of that going on. Even on a busy evening, there was enough space to move around and stretch your legs. Plus, you get to enjoy the fresh air, instead of the stench of popcorn associated with indoor theatres.

One advantage driveins have been notorious for is young lovers can make out with each other in their vehicles during the movie.

That’s yet one more activity indoor cinemas would frown upon. They surely are the No-Fun League.

Saskatchewan owed more GTH explanations

Let us be clear it is a good thing the RCMP is not laying criminal charges in the Global Transportation Hub fiasco.

Certainly, it is a great thing for the Saskatchewan Party government, whose credibility would have taken a serious hit if it headed into the 2020 election under the cloud of criminal court cases.

But consider for a moment how bad such a circumstance would have been for democracy itself.

Such a scandal would have affected the political fortunes of the Sask. Party, as was the case for the Progressive Conservatives in the early 1990s after their own caucus communication fraud scandal that produced 16 criminal convictions of MLAs and staff.

Setting aside judgment whether the old PCs deserved this fate (they went into hiatus and most of their members converted to the newly formed Sask. Party), this scandal disrupted the political balance in the province for nearly two decades.

What was essentially a two-party system in Saskatchewan between the NDP left and the alternative, became a one-party system as that alternative transitioned from the PCs to the Liberals to the Sask. Party after the 1997 merger.

Of course, its far less likely even GTH criminal charges would have killed the mighty Sask. Party in the same way.

Nevertheless, had the RCMP found reason for charges, there can be no doubt that it would have taken an even greater political toll on the Sask. Party than this mess already has.

After two and half years and some 7,500 man-hours of RCMP investigation, we can be now confident that

That has to be a good thing.

But does that mean this whole sorry GTH affair is now over and we should never know what really happened?

No. Not by a long shot.

Maybe the “judicial” inquiry now being demanded by the NDP is not needed.

One would think such legal matters (with the exception of civil suits that may still possibly emerge out of the myriad of pending land acquisition transaction lawsuits) have been dispensed with.

But consider all the other things the RCMP has likely discovered during its two and a half years of investigation— non-criminal matters of questionable ethics, conflict of interest and downright government incompetence — that the public deserves to know about but doesn’t yet know about.

Although the GTH anticipated $10 million in land sales in the 2017-18, it made no such sales that fiscal

year and only $231,000 in land leases.

Total GTH debt is now $40 million, including a $28-million loan from the Royal Bank of Canada.

Debt interest is now $845,000 — $200,000 more in 2017-18 than the $635,000 in the previous fiscal year.

And this supposed inland port actually has only 12 clients, many of which are government entities ordered to locate there.

Moreover, the GTH’s very existence has clearly impacted other costly decisions, namely, the routing of now $1.9-billion Regina by-pass that has become, arguably, an even bigger fiasco.

Now, Justice and GTH Minister Don Morgan is talking about unloading the whole mess.

“In retrospect, it’s probably not a business the government should have been involved in,” Morgan said.

But why did it become such a mess? The public is owed this explanation.

In fairness to the opposition’s own politically driven call for a “judicial inquiry,” it repeatedly demanded politicians and bureaucrats come to legislative committees to explain what went wrong.

Government MLAs blocked this each and every time, sometimes using the “under-investigation” excuse.

Well, there is no longer a police investigation to use as an excuse, and politicians should be required to explain their actions.

And we should have an in-depth provincial auditor forensic audit advancing her initial damning finding in a June 2016 report.

This would seem to be the very minimum that is now required.

Not everyone has enjoyed a happy home life It’s a wonderful blessing to have a happy home. To be able to turn from our struggles in this knock about world, and find love and companionship, sympathy and understanding, peace and security there. In 1822, American actor and dramatist John Howard Payne wrote a ballad that is still popular, Home, Sweet Home. The last line says, “There’s no place like home.”

But for some there’s a painful irony in those words. No place like it – thank goodness! Because their homes have become a place of stressful conflict and abuse, rejection and abandonment. Sadly, for some Christians, it is their faith in the Saviour that has made them unwanted and shunned. The Apostle Paul reports, “We both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless.” (I Cor. 4:11) It’s then the children of God rest themselves in the constancy of the Lord.

David the psalmist writes, “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me.” (Ps. 27:10) There’s also the assurance that one day we will be ushered into our heavenly home, where there will be, “no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There

shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev. 21:4) That is the subject of an unusual hymn called Jerusalem, My Happy Home. Joseph Bromehead (1747-1826), an Anglican clergyman, is credited with the present version that is found in our hymnals. But it was actually written around 1583, during the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth. The author of the original simply called himself “F.B.P.” We can’t be certain of his identity, but there was a Roman Catholic priest names Francis Baker Porter who was imprisoned in the cold and damp of the Tower of London.

It’s possible that there he began meditating on our heavenly home, and wrote about it.

The author allowed his imagination to roam freely. (For example, some lines of his song have King David as the leader of the heavenly choir!) But most of the lines used today are based on the description in the book of Revelation. (e.g.

Rev. 21:1-5) “Jerusalem, my happy home! / Name ever dear to me; / When shall my labours have an end, / In joy, and peace, and thee? / Why should I shrink at pain and woe? / Or feel at death dismay? / I’ve

Canaan’s goodly land in view, / And realms of endless day. / O Christ do Thou my soul prepare / For that bright home of love; / That I may see Thee and adore, / With all Thy saints above.”

Years ago, in a farmhouse in the eastern United States, a mother often rocked her little boy to sleep, while singing this hymn. But, while the boy was still young, his godly mother died. His fa-

ther was a hard man, and finally the resentful boy ran away to a large city in the area.

There, like the prodigal son, he fell in with wicked companions, and lived a wild life. At last, his excesses caught up with him and he was left, dying alone, in a common lodging house. There he was visited a number of times by a city missionary, but the young man refused to listen to the appeal to put his faith in Christ.

After visiting one day, discouraged by his failure, the missionary turned to the dingy window. Look-

ing heavenward, he began to sing, “Jerusalem, my happy home, name ever dear to me.” The effect on the dying man was electric. It brought back to his mind his early years at home, his mother’s love and his mother’s prayers.

“Oh, that hymn!” he cried. “I have not thought of it for years. How many times it called me home again, when I had gone out, resolved never to go back.” And he repented of his sinful ways, and put his faith in Christ. A mother’s hymn was used to save her wandering boy.

Remembering what’s really important While strolling through our local farmers market, I noticed a lapel pin for sale. Here’s how it read: “Hi, I can’t remember your name either.” I immediately tossed a couple of dollars in the bucket and brought it home, intending to wear it every day.

I haven’t done that but I look at it regularly and console myself that I’m not the only one who forgets.

It’s really not that I forget the person or that I don’t recognize the face, it’s just that if they aren’t in their “usual

spot,” I have to mentally transfer them to my immediate presence.

One comforting thought is that I’m rarely stuck on identities for more than a few minutes, sometimes only hours, or at most, a day.

Just the tendency, however, makes me realize age truly is starting to creep up on me. More

importantly, however, is the keen understanding that I need to cultivate those things that really matter in my life. Names may temporarily elude me but, relationships with people continue to be an important and blessed part of my life.

Throughout Scripture we are reminded that God never forgets: “God remembered Noah,” says the writer of Genesis; “Remember His marvelous works” exhorts the writer of 1 Chronicles; “remember my chains, penned Paul, writing to those early Christians

from his prison cell; and Peter, in defending his faith before those who wanted him to stop proclaiming Jesus Christ, wrote “then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said ….”

There are times when we forget the goodness of the Lord but how comforting to know that He never forgets us! “[The Lord answered] “Can a woman forget her nursing child and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.”

Beneficial bugs, a boon in the garden Now summer is almost officially upon us, and most days there is more warmth in the air, there is also evidence of many buglike critters enjoying the sun.

The world of insects is fascinating, as, to the gardener, their life cycle, the colonies they live in and their ability to hunt for food all make them remarkable. Even the thought of those little critters walking across your garden in perspective must be like walking from Saskatoon to Regina or Edmonton depending on the size of your garden area.

Sometimes the response by gardeners to these critters is to squish or spray now and be rid of those ugly and damaging pests.

However, not all bugs/ insects are a danger to the plants in our gardens.

Some present a more neutral side, doing neither harm nor good, happily living their life in the garden world. Other critters are helpful to the gardener by feeding on insects that do harm to plants thus providing safe biological controls for some of the most common garden pests.

Nature is also a remarkable thing with creating a balance that stewards of the land constantly disrupt.

It is important for all gardeners and other stewards of the land to learn about the individual critter and

Beneficial insects (sometimes referred to as bio-control agents) are naturally occurring in nature or readily available to farmers, growers and others. They fall into two basic categories with some being predatory and some being more parasitic in nature. Some do a little “host feeding” of both the parasitic and predatory nature. Some of the common predacious beneficial creatures are beetles, wasps, mites and true bugs. The more parasitic beneficial creatures are often miniwasps and nematodes.

Introducing biological control can be effective but does not act like a pesticide solution. For instance if you have a fly problem, you can spray a multitude of products on these flies and effectively gain control for a while. However, the flies evolve quickly and often become immune to the chemical control agents, which in turn causes us to use more toxic products to

gain the same control.

A biological works by interrupting the life cycle of the problem critter, (in this case the fly) and over time gains control of the population. This is not an instant fix but takes some time to be effective. The predator or parasite grows in number in response to the host and then decreases in number as the host dies off. This is a somewhat similar scenario to the coyote and the rabbit, or many other examples in our ecosystem.

My introduction into the beneficial world occurred when I was an intensive livestock producer and created an ideal environment for many species of flies by providing livestock, bedding debris and my home landscape to aid them in living a happy life.

As I am less than enamored with flies, I strove to find a control measure that was sustainable but also economically feasible and effective.

in life is to source out the pupae of flies, and lay their eggs in those pupae. The parasitic wasp larvae develop, consume the fly and hatch into the adult form of a parasitic wasp and happily look for more fly pupae to procreate. Over time, what results with the correct level of application is no more flies. For me and countless others

who embrace this method of control, we now enjoy a much more pleasant outdoor experience even if we do keep critters.

There are many other beneficial bugs/insects in our outdoor living space.

In other parts of the world, the comeback is already happening. In China, drive-ins have been all the rage, with new outdoor theatres springing up over

the last decade. Clearly, the Chinese know a good thing when they see it.

Here in North Battleford, outdoor movie nights have been held north of the Frontier Centre in the past two years. They have always been a huge hit, with lineups of cars all the way down the street. Clearly, there is an audience for it here at home.

The downside in Canada is that the drive-in season is always going to be confined to warm-weather months, so there’s always going to be a limited amount of revenue to be made. Winters in Canada
