Super Lap Battle USA is back at The Circuit of The Americas for the second time but what is Super Lap Battle USA. Super Lap Battle USA is the ultimate Time Attack Challenge. A Superbowlesque event in the racing calendar.

Super Lap Battle USA was devised to bring together the best racers in the world to compete against each other on common ground and prove once and for all, who was fastest. This year saw two Australian competitors entering, the Elusive Integra out of Melbourne driven

by Brett Dickie and Barton Mawar driving the Lyfe Motorports 350Z. Barton is usually found behind the wheel of the PR Technology Porsche, the RP968 at World Time Attack Championship.

achieved what some others considered to be the impossible dream for Time Attackers, that an enthusiast could race at one of only two FIA certified tracks in North America.

To lure the best racers in the world to compete in America, Jason Dienhart, Race Director of Super Lap Battle USA knew he needed a premier venue and an event with its own brand and following. Securing COTA for his event Jason

Super Lap Battle USA is now in its second year at COTA and 43 Battlers arrived to drive on the freshly resurfaced track, an honour indeed to be one of the first race series to do so.

Jason has plans for this event to be a truly international affair. Who wouldn’t want to tackle the wall, the Esses and the 1000+ metre straight.

Based just outside Austin Texas, Circuit of The Americas is a world class destination. It is the first purpose built Formula 1™ facility in the United States and also hosts the MotoGP™, the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Summer Edition of ESPN’S X Games and many more events throughout the year. Founded in 2012 the 3.41mile circuit uses the natural geography of the area to produce an undulating track presenting challenges for all drivers, even those at the very pinnacle of their race series. This 20 turn masterpiece is set within 1500 acres and as well as being the premium race destination in the USA it doubles up as a music venue which has hosted some huge artists such as Nine Inch Nails, KISS, Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson.

With the success of last year’s inaugural Super Lap Battle COTA fresh in everyones’ minds, fans and drivers were anticipating an epic weekend of racing when the Time Attack paddock rolled in to Austin, Texas earlier this year.

The Circuit of The America’s was the hallowed battle ground for the highly anticipated Super Lap Battle showdown of the USA’s finest Time Attack drivers.

Top competitors from around the country descended on this little corner of Texas to assert

10

their authority on the freshly resurfaced track.

Ryan Schimsk set himself up as one of the battlers to beat clocking the fastest RWD lap and the fastest time of the weekend in his Performance Motorsport Porsche GT3.

He was a full 2 seconds ahead of the competition completing a scorching lap of 2.15.020. Switching from his 2019 AWD entry Ryan shaved a full 8 seconds off his lap however, he was unable to repeat last year’s fastest lap of 02.07.181 posted by the Lyfe Motorsports/ Yokohama Nissan GTR of Cole

Powelson. Lyfe Motorsports were plagued by technical problems this year leaving a duo of local racers to take the two top spots. They were not alone in suffering technical or mechanical failures. The nature of the series means cars run on the very edge of their capabilities in a bid to clock the fastest lap.

Texan Feras Qartoumy capitalised on home advantage to win the Limited Class and smash the class lap record, while the Vibrant Performance / PZ Tuning RSX, driven by William AuYeung finished third in the same class, breaking its FWD record.

Vibrant Performance | PZ Tuning RSX took the FWD lap record on the day The Qar Optics Racing Chevrolet Corvette Z06 of Feras Qartoumy took the RWD lap record with a time of 02.17.142 as well as the class win, giving him a well deserved second place overall. Feras took the class win in 2019 as well but managed to take nearly 1.5 seconds off his lap time this year.

JC Meynet took second place in Limited Class in the MTAGA Subaru WRX STI with a 02.18.590 also netting the AWD record for the day and third place overall. JC took a staggering 3.1 seconds off his 2019 Super Lap Battle time where he piloted his WRX STI to fourth place in Limited Class with a 02.21.752.

Feras Qartoumy in his Z06 took a class win and second place overall.

The Street Class win was taken by Jackie Ding & Alex Li in the PhD Racing A90 Toyota Supra with a Class RWD record time of 02.22.508.

PhD Racing fielded S2000’s in the 2019 Super Lap Battle but swapping to the A90 this year saw their lap times tumble by 8 seconds.

Enthusiast Class was well represented this year with double the entries of 2019. Jenson Little lead the class with a 02.28.484 in the TK Mitsubishi Evolution RS. Zachary Sober took second place with a 02.28.783 in the Sober Racing, Subaru WRX STI taking nearly 13 seconds off his 2019 Super Lap Battle time, clearly driver and car getting an upgrade.

JC Meynet’s MTAGA Subaru WRX STI took third overall on the day.

Super Lap Battle Team and some huge talent out on the track, taming what is a challenging and at times intimidating circuit.

Given the improvement we have seen in the last year we can’t help but think that our return in 2021 will see lap records tumble again. We particularly loved seeing the A90 Supra out on track and look forward to seeing them again next year with another year of development.

Formed in 2000, Pfitzner Performance Gearboxes (PPG) would argue that they are the No1 performance gearbox manufacturer in the world, given the list of accolades they have to their name.

Vaughn Gittin Junior completed the first full drift lap of the NĂźrburgring using a PPG transmission, the worlds first 300mph street car, a Ford GT by M2K

USA ran a full PPG gearset and Subaru Driver and Constructor championship titles have been held by PPG equipped racecars on pretty much every continent on the planet.

PPG gearsets are designed to drop into original casings to directly replace the internal workings of the standard gearbox,

PPG pride themselves on this compatibility. No modifications to the other drivetrain components are required, although given you are uprating your gearset we are guessing the rest of the drivetrain is far from stock. A sequential shift systems offers a definite advantage over standard H shift pattern gear shifts. When integrated with

modern 32-bit ECU’s, shifts can be executed in a frankly mind boggling 45ms, that’s F1 quick. We caught up with Dave Gammon, PPG’s Operations Director and he agreed to provide BattleAuto readers with a detailed technical breakdown of what goes into a PPG gearset. Over to you Dave.

FOCUS|TECHNICAL FEATURE SHIFTERSS

The sequential gear levers PPG supply are a billet Aluminium construction with over sized pivot bearings which allow precision low friction bearings to be incorporated in the design. We offer two versions of lever, actuation above and below the pivot. This gives the option to pull or push for up and downshifts, all dependent on the individual application and requirements. Reverse is catered for with a small ergonomic mountain bike derived lever system that

allows adjustment for each application.

Used and seen a lot in modern DCT cars today. The paddles in motorsport applications are used to shift or actuate the next gear,either up shift or downshift. This function is via a small switch mounted into the paddle assembly. When a signal is sent, the ECU reacts to its input and signals the gearbox to change gear. This function works to actuate the gear shift pneumatic cylinder mounted on the gearbox.

S E Q U E N T I A L A C T U AT O R S The sequential actuator is a key component of our sequential gear system.

Its contains our unique rotary position sensor (BLADE 360º) along with a lock out system for neutral and reverse selection.

This device is responsible for the transfer of motion in the system, in many PPG applications it converts a linear motion to a rotary motion. Its rather clever!

SEQUENTIAL BARREL The “Barrel” as it is referred to in the motorsport’s world, is the item that holds the gear selectors in place and transfers motion from the sequential actuator, to rotate and select gears. This rotation can

perform several actions at any time.

Typically, the selector forks follow a track system that allows the selectors to follow a path that in predefined around the barrel.

Air actuators are compact and low weight.

Air actuators produce very high force output from a very small physical size & weight. Actuators produce approximately 75Kg (750N) force when operated at 8.0bar (120psi). Pneumatic cylinders do not suffer reductions in force output when the temperature increases and require little additional thermal management

considerations. Pneumatic systems only place small requirements of kinetic energy from the vehicle's electrical system during the shift phase.

The air compressor requires minimal electrical power and current long term and consume less than 1amp per shift.

LOAD CELLS - STRAIN GAUGES

A load cell is a sensor that converts force (nm) into a voltage (volts). This allows the load cell to be optimised and calibrated for force input and voltage output. PPG supply load cells configured to operate for up shift and downshift operation, this means that the 0-5vdc output is split into half and the load cell is at its neutral/rest position at 2.5vdc allowing the ECU system to determine what is a pull (up) or push (down) on the gear lever. Sensors can be supplied for chassis supply voltages

5vdc-12vdc operations and various force ranges. The load cells we supply are optimised for a force range based on real time tests for the system purchased, so you can be assured the components will work exactly as advised in the field.

PPG use exclusively KA Sensors for all load cell applications, custom calibrated and designed for each application in the PPG sequential gearbox range

FOCUS|TECHNICAL FEATURE ROTARY POSITION SENSOR

A sensor that allows a rotary movement to be converted to a voltage or PWM (Digital).

All rotary sensors however were not created equal. Pfitzner Performance Gearboxes have pioneered the usage of contactless rotary sensors in sequential gear systems, this allows the sensor to avoid reading any vibrations and the sensor itself has the ability to be configured and calibrated for any rotation cycle. The sensors high resolution enables the barrel and dog ring position to be monitored which in turn allows the ECU to characterise the positions in which to return power. If you know the position you can

decide the best point to remove and return power to the transmission. 5-wire sensor is 10-bit resolution and allows data capture at high frequencies, which yields real time benefits for ECU calibration and has full health check and configurable software. The sensors are hermetically sealed and are long term temperature and oil stable in operation allowing the sensors to be installed internally in PPG systems as they require zero service during their operational life. PPG use exclusively; Gill Blade 360 º Sensors – 10bit resolution contactless rotary position sensors.

DOG RINGS

You hear everyone talk about dog rings and wonder what exactly are they? Well in very simple terms they are the parts that move when you change gear between the two gears. They are the front line in making sure you get the next gear or not!

So they are pretty important for the operation of a gearbox, they determine how a gearbox gets a gear and also releases a gear. PPG have some very unique features that

other unscrupulous companies have tried to copy to their failure.

The way we design and heat treat our dog rings and dog gears sets us apart in so much; its not uncommon to hear of PPG gear systems having covered several years racing without any significant wear being visible. Synchro, or Synchromesh as its widely known. The dictionary definition is a device in a transmission system that automatically brings the gears being meshed to about the same speed of rotation before a shift occurs. Basically it stops the gearbox from crashing or smashing gears!

Our dog rings in our dog boxes replace the synchro systems in order to be stronger, with quicker engagement when shifted fast.

Did you know it is the synchro hub that moves when you change gears and not the gears themselves.

STRAIGHT CUT GEARS Straight cut tooth profiles in very simple terms is the angle of the gear tooth profile.

Straight cut is associated with strength and noise in terms of the profile. Not all gear sets are made with straight cut in motorsports however, helical cut which is

usually 12-20ยบ degrees from parallel is the norm for OEM gear systems. We at PPG use helical in a lot of systems so as to provide a quieter profile which in turn makes the cabin more accommodating for endurance and road-based cars

HELICAL CUT GEARS Helical cut tooth profiles are common in OEM applications inc DCT & DCT transmissions. The profile offers great contact area in larger gears and quiet operation for passenger comfort.

FOCUS|TECHNICAL FEATURE GEARBOX ECU - GCU The Gearbox ECU is a dedicated control system for gear shift parameters. Many motorsports ECU systems have integral GCU functionality to undertake the calibrations and controls in a single box solution.

In this scenario a GCU can interface with the engine ECU and undertake the closed loop functions of sequential lever and paddle-shift gear systems, thus making it possible to retain existing chassis ECU systems without the need to reprogram and rewire.

Many mid-market ECU systems do not have the ability to control closed loop gear functions, also paddle-shift controls are not covered.

FOCUS|TECHNICAL FEATURE MOTORSPORT WIRING HARNESSES When building a motorsport chassis or fast road car there is a requirement to integrate new sensors, gearboxes, & ECU systems. This is overcome via the use of a custom wiring harness.

Theses types of harness' can be a full chassis loom or what is called an 'overlay loom'. When we supply a sequential gear system we supply a 'overlay loom' that is a generic design that will allow the customer to integrate our gear system and our sensors into their application.

Motorsport wiring harness's use high quality connector and wiring, which offers increased performance in highly demanding environments containing heat, vibration and water.

A mechanical linkage between the accelerator pedal and throttle butterfly has always existed, be it a cable or rod linkage. With modern ECU systems, theses manual systems have been replaced by sophisticated electronic control modules, sensors and actuators performing the task operated via control signals.

There are several reasons why electronic throttle actuation is preferable to a conventional throttle cable: • Chassis ECU systems are able to control all of the throttle operation.

• The use of throttle actuation ensures that the engine only receives the correct amount of throttle opening for any give situation.

• Allows optimised start procedures for traction & launch control strategies.

• Closed loop gearbox shift management, throttle blipping, flat shift.

GLOBAL TIME

THE RIDGE MOTORS Global Time Attack made the journey to the Ever Green State for the first time and 37 drivers followed, looking for that one perfect lap.

Nestled on the edge of the Olympic National Park The Ridge Motorsport Park has been a thrilling circuit for drivers since the asphalt was laid in 2011. The circuit has 16 turns and over 300 ft of elevation changes over its 2.47 mile length. Add to that being 40ft wide to give you some extra space for when the brave pills exceed grip and you have a fantastic venue in a beautiful part of the country that we hope to see more of in the future.

This particular outing for the GTA tour yielded a stunning win with a car from Street Class taking the overall fastest lap with a 1.44.134, just under 2 seconds faster than its nearest rival. No it wasn’t the awesome MR2 of Apex Attack (we just loved the picture) it was the equally awesome RS Future X Koyorad NSX of Amir Bentatou. The pressure mounted on all the racers when the rain started to fall on the first day.

Racers needed to reset their thinking and work on building speed on their laps, the balance between driving for the fastest time and maintaining grip is a delicate one. Jared Floyd in his V6 powered S2000 spent the time chasing down the S2000 of Ben Williams, who eventually took the limited class win. Ben’s times were falling but his flow was cut short when the session was red flagged due to a car on fire.

The second day saw dryer track conditions and the racers were back on the attack.

This renewed vigour unfortunately cost Jared dearly when he lost engine power not long into a flying lap and had to return to the pits with a suspected bent valve.

That was the end of his racing.

Zhenyang Huang in his H Performance Porsche Cayman GT4 of managed a 1:49.763 and third in Limited Class Enthusiast class had 5 attackers this time around.Chris Reber in his REB3R, Ford Mustang GT took the class win with a 1:53.894, besting second place Adam Wood in this Wood Racing Subaru Impreza Outback S by 4 seconds. Ian Crane, Adam Harding and Matthew Bueler rounded out the class with times ranging from 1:59.908 to 2:11.550. .Street class was the best represented with 18 attackers taking to the track for the inaugural Global Time Attack event at The Ridge. As we mentioned before Amir Bentatou took not only the class win but the overall fastest time of the day.

The K20 turbo charged NSX is a fantastic build bristling with high end parts and we hope to have a full feature for you in a future issue. Johnny Hernandez took second place in class with his Lido Labs, Subaru WRX STI. Johnny also took third place overall on the day with a 1:46.240, faster than all the limited and unlimited class attackers save for one Tamer Ozkaraoglu. Street class was made up

of mainly Japanese marques with the high revving VTEC hero, Honda S2000 proving particularly popular. The fastest nonJapanese attacker in Street class was Zefeng Jing in his PM Racing, BMW M4, finding his perfect lap of 1:48.308. Our Favourite car, the Apex Attack MR2 of Mike Reed found ninth place in Street class.

Mike, a local guy had come to the circuit with a single minded goal of hitting a 1:52, following a new Ridge record being set recently in another 2GR MR2 at 1:53.4 by another local. Mike achieved his goal just 3 laps in with a 1:52.8. This time would have seen him take tenth place in Street Class, but on the second day after much hard charging Mike achieved his perfect lap at 1:52.262 taking ninth in class. Limited class saw 9 entries. Whilst being heavy with Japanese machinery again there was a particularly interesting build in the Double R Racing, Chevrolet S10 SCSB of Kevin Phillips. This LS swapped truck set a very respectable 1:57.608 and managed seventh in class.

Ben Williams Honda S2000 took the Limited Class win Ben Williams took the class win in his Rampage Fab, Honda S2000. Ben set the pace at 1:47.927 holding the Steckbauer Racing BMW M3 of Kevin Steckbauer at bay and achieving fourth overall on the day. The H Performance, Porsche Cayman GT4 of Zhenyang Huang just missed out on second place by a fraction of a second clocking a 1:49.763 vs Kevin’s 1:49.746, it really doesn’t get much closer than that, every fraction of a second counts.The Unlimited class win was taken by Tamer Ozkaraoglu in his ATA Racing, Dodge Viper GTA.

Tamer also took second place on the day overall with a 1:46.098. Jeff Seehorn took second place in class with a 1:49.227 in his 6OC Rallysport Subaru WRX STI. Rocky Crocker and Pierre Tucholka rounded out the group with 1:51.032 and 2:01.355 respectively.

This beautiful and challenging circuit has proven to be a great venue for Global Time Attack. Jason Dienhart, Global Time Attack’s Race Director hopes they will be returning to the Ever Green state again next June or July, watch this space.

GLOBAL TIME ROAD ATL ANTA Global Time Attack came to the Michelin Raceway and records tumbled in an action packed GTA Round 2.

Sometimes things just flow, don’t they?

You hit all the green lights on the way to work, you get the right line at the market or you cross the train station concourse, intersecting the crowd perfectly. Imagine then threading together the perfect lap, braking later and harder, nailing every

apex and carrying more speed out of the corner and again and again. That is exactly what Eric Fleming did in his Fleming Racing Corvette Z06 when he set a new overall Limited class record for Road Atlanta of 1:25.868. Let’s put that into context. Last year’s fastest, Limited

class lap was 1:30.281 set by the R Stands for Race, Camaro ZL1 1LE of Scott Dollahite and Jason Dent. Fleming set his incredible time on the first session of the second day. This is only the second time he has raced with his new HorsePower Research engine, his first

race on his Samsonas Motorsport Transmission and, as if that wasn’t enough, he did it all on a road tyre, the Yokohama A052. Fleming believes there is more to come from the car but was understandably content with his time so parked up and enjoyed the rest of the racing.

Jackie Ding in his TA90 Supra took the Street Class win.

Derek Boyd was second overall on the day in his Halona Farms Racing, Mitsubishi Evolution X with a 1:27.584.

Boyd, who also took the Unlimited class win, competed in the only Evolution X on the day.

Coming in third, and taking the Street class win, was Jackie Ding in the PHD racing Toyota Supra TA90. Ding set a benchmark for others to aspire to when he beat last year’s best Street class time by 3.7 seconds, clocking a 1:27.923, a new overall Street class record. Ding has previously raced a Honda S2000, but judging by this sensational win he made the right choice changing platform.

The Enthusiast Class win was taken by Jonathan Wheeler in his TRP Racing, Nissan 370Z with a 1:42.529. Just under a second behind him Michael Whitehead piloted his MCW Racing Ford Focus ST to a 1:43.489. Third place was also taken by a Ford Focus, this time the JST

Performance RS driven by Dhruv Bhavsar, his perfect lap being 1:44.353.

Street class was dominated by Jackie Ding but his closest rival Amir Bentatou was only 1.2 seconds behind posting a 1:29.179. Amir’s RS Future X Koyorad NSX would have secured the class win with this time in 2019. Ryan Matthews rounded out the top three with a 1:31.030 in his After Dark Speed Chevrolet Corvette. Social Media favourites Sally McNulty (Snail Performance Sally) and Markos Mylonas’ Snail Performance / Borla Subaru WRX STI managed fifth in class with a 1:32.708, but unfortunately suffered engine failure later in the day.

The car loaded to the trailer but sounded very sick indeed.

Limited class was of course decimated by Eric Fleming. Fleming’s nearest rival in class was a glacial five seconds behind.

The JST Performance Ford Focus RS driven by Dhruv Bhavsar. second place in class, which was 2.9 seconds in front of third place man Jason Owens in his United Speed Racing Honda Civic Type R. Unlimited Class was taken by Boyd.

Second place was held by Alexander Gallardo in the CheckSix Garage Nissan 350Z with a 1:30.475 and Dan Kroll took third in his IAG Performance, Subaru WRX STI with a respectable 1:32.950.

Atlanta-based Check6 Garage are worth keeping an eye on. They clocked seconds in both the Limited and Unlimited classes. We hope to see this local outfit back here again next year on even better form, maybe taking a class win, or two!
