From the Executive Director

A

S THE 2019-20 ACADEMIC YEAR drew to a close, we were barely four months into COVID-19, and like everyone else, we were bracing for the rigors – and uncertainties – that lay ahead.

And yet, even in those early days of the pandemic, we embraced an unflappable, “we-can-do-this” attitude, taking unpredictability in stride and steadfastly supporting Darden’s mission to deliver transformative learning experiences and groundbreaking research.

So, when considered in its totality, 2019-20 was a period of remarkable achievement and growth for the Batten Institute.

Following a tumultuous period of rescinded offers and truncated internships, the Batten Institute supported 45 subsidized summer MBA internships with startups and early-stage ventures.

Amid the uncertainty of last year’s MBA admissions cycle, we awarded 13 MBA scholarships in entrepreneurship, innovation and technology through our prestigious Batten Scholars Program.

Following a competitive selection process attracting 34 applications, we invited 16 high-potential venture teams to participate in our six-month, intensive venture program, delivered entirely in a virtual format.

With renewed vigor, we relaunched our network of industry experts and seasoned entrepreneurs, to support Darden students working on entrepreneurial projects and new ventures.

Through our Faculty Research Grants Program, we provided funding for six new scholarly projects in 2019-20, addressing cutting-edge issues in entrepreneurship, innovation and technology.

A leading academic publication, Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal, devoted the entirety of its spring issue to effectuation, a theory of entrepreneurship pioneered by Professor and Batten Faculty Fellow Saras D. Sarasvathy.

The Batten team produced 28 Darden Ideas to Action articles and podcasts to highlight lessons from faculty research and thought leadership.

Just as Darden made a major pivot to online delivery, we similarly transitioned all Batten-led programs to be virtual following the onset of COVID-19, resulting in 15 new online webinars or events.

Batten Institute programs rely on the contributions of many, and we are grateful to the faculty, staff, alumni and friends who have given so generously of their time and talent to make them successful.

We are proud to be part of such an extraordinary community during this harrowing time. There has likely never been a greater need for responsible leadership, and this is surely why we all remain so deeply committed to Darden.

The Batten Institute supports the Journal of Business Venturing, the premier scholarly journal devoted to entrepreneurship and innovation. JBV is ranked by the Social Science Citation Index as one of the world’s most influential management journals. From 1995 to 2009, Professor Sankaran “Venkat” Venkataraman served as editor-in-chief. The current managing editor is Batten-sponsored Darden researcher Sarasa Subramony.

Awards Can Business Save the Earth? (Stanford University Press, 2018), authored by Professor Michael Lenox and Aaron Chatterji, received the Bronze Medal in the 2020 Axiom Business Book Awards for the Philanthropy/Nonprofit/Sustainability category.

Professor Saras D. Sarasvathy received the 2019 Legacy Impact Award from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers in Stockholm, Sweden, which recognized her trailblazing research on the nature of entrepreneurial expertise.

Research

Effectuation Pioneer Receives Global Legacy Impact Award University of Virginia Darden School of Business Professor Saras D. Sarasvathy received the Legacy Impact Award from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC) at the organization’s annual conference in Stockholm in September of 2019 for her research on effectuation, a framework for thought and action used by expert entrepreneurs to build successful ventures. Sarasvathy is the sixth person in the GCEC’s history to receive the Legacy Impact Award.

The five principles of effectuation,

first described in Sarasvathy’s seminal 2001 paper, “Causation and Effectuation: Toward a Theoretical Shift from Economic Inevitability to Entrepreneurial Contingency,” proved to be enormously empowering to a generation of entrepreneurs, providing easy-to-understand tools to navigate the uncertainty of the venture creation environment.

Today, a range of business leaders and entrepreneurs credit Sarasvathy with providing them with the intellectual underpinning to found and grow thriving enterprises.

The research also took hold in academia, spurring a thriving sector of entrepreneurial study across the world, with dedicated effectuation courses of study at universities and incubators from Denmark to Pakistan.

The Society for Effectual Action, an online portal for entrepreneurship educators to share research and teaching material, supports more than 400 educators.

Sarasvathy’s award-winning 2011 book, Effectual Entrepreneurship, has been translated into six languages.

Business Innovation and Climate Change Initiative Launched in May 2017, the Business Innovation and Climate Change Initiative informs dialogue on the role of innovation in addressing climate change.

Based on the work of Professor Michael Lenox and Batten Senior Research Associate Rebecca Duff, this multidimensional project seeks to engage a diverse set of stakeholders from business, nonprofit, government and academic arenas through: Research: exploring the opportunities to decarbonize key industry sectors by 2060 with the goal of limiting global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, avoiding significant disruptions to the global economy.

Stakeholder Discussions: bringing together senior

executives and decision makers from diverse industries to address issues related to climate change and identify opportunities to catalyze clean technology innovation and adoption.

Design@Darden Initiative

Effectual Thinking & Action Initiative

Design@Darden aims to enrich the global conversation and application of design thinking to business and society. Built upon the foundational design-thinking research of Professor Jeanne Liedtka, the Initiative supports courses, student clubs and experiences, faculty research and outreach through the Design@Darden website, among other venues. designatdarden.org

The Effectual Thinking & Action Initiative supports the dissemination of the groundbreaking form of entrepreneurial thinking known as effectuation, developed

by Professor Saras Sarasvathy. The Society for Effectual Action (SEA), spearheaded by Professor Saras Sarasvathy, is a global society advancing effectual action for entrepreneurs from all industries. effectuation.org

During the 2019–20 academic year, we supported 13 scholarships for members of the Class of 2021, a portion of more than $1.5 million for Darden MBAs in entrepreneurship, innovation and technology. In addition to direct support from the Batten Institute, other scholarships are awarded by the Darden School for MBAs with outstanding potential in entrepreneurial thinking and pursuits:

Kenneth Nahigian Memorial Scholarship

Three scholarships were awarded for a total of more than $100,000.

One scholarship was awarded in the amount of $21,000.

One scholarship was awarded in the amount of $14,000.

This scholarship was established in 1998 by alumni, faculty and friends of Darden and the family of Professor Lee Johnston. The scholarship honors one of Darden’s great professors who served students, executives and fellow faculty members for 33 years.

Professor Johnston was a founding faculty member of Darden; the first director of the doctoral program; and a professor of finance, small business and entrepreneurship courses. The scholarship is awarded to Second Year students with a special interest in entrepreneurship.

This scholarship was established in 1981 by family, alumni and friends of Ken Nahigian (MBA ’67) as a memorial. Nahigian served as class president at Darden and went on to become a highly successful and promising entrepreneur in real estate investment and management.

This scholarship is awarded to a Second Year Darden student who demonstrates outstanding entrepreneurial capabilities and promise of building a business career centering on those capabilities. Where possible, financial need will also be taken into account.

Established in 2000 by alumni of the Darden School in recognition of Professor Bill Sihler’s dedication to students and learning, up to four Sihler Scholarships will be made without regard to need to candidates accepted for admission to the MBA program whose academic record is above average and who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit.

William F. and Joyce A. Richmond Entrepreneurial Leadership Scholarship One scholarship was awarded for more than $22,000.

This scholarship was established in 2001 by William F. Richmond (MBA ’76). The scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence and an interest in entrepreneurship.

We support workshops that improve student performance in competitions, introduce students to new concepts, and afford students experiential learning opportunities in entrepreneurship, innovation and technology.

The following were offered in 2019–20: Startup Academy is a pre-matriculation program we host for all interested graduate students across the University of Virginia that introduces key business concepts such as design thinking, customer discovery, and hypothesis-driven experimentation. In 2019-20, registrants included more than 80 graduate students from Darden’s MBA and EMBA programs, the UVA School of Education, the UVA School of Data Science, the UVA School of Law and UVA’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.

We are pleased to partner with PhD+ Startup, a seminar series about entrepreneurship and commercialization developed specifically for Ph.D. candidates and post-docs across the University of Virginia. The PhD+ Startup series is offered as part of PhD Plus, an initiative of the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs at UVA. Venture Capital Bootcamp The Venture Capital Bootcamp — which was held in January 2020 at UVA Darden DC Metro and the offices of Cooley LLC in Reston, Virginia, this year — is an annual two-day workshop for students who are interested in pursuing opportunities in venture capital and entrepreneurship and focuses on providing students with a basic understanding of early stage investing.

University of Virginia Entrepreneurship Cup The Batten Institute is a founding member of the pan-University team that develops and delivers the University of Virginia Entrepreneurship Cup (E-Cup), an annual competition that seeks to enrich the entrepreneurial community by encouraging students to pursue new ventures with the potential to address unmet needs and solve social and economic problems. The competition is open to any student in the UVA community from all 12 schools at the University.

The E-Cup is a series of events that occur across the academic year, consisting of the following three stages: Concept Competition: $25,000 in total awards

Students are encouraged to come up with out-of-the box ideas that could be translated into compelling projects.

Discovery Competition: $25,000 in total awards

Centered on the principles of effectuation with customer and product development, in this second stage of the competition, students demonstrate they have taken steps to “de-risk” their idea.

In the final phase of competition, students provide evidence of real customer and stakeholder demand and a vision for how the venture could become a sustainable business or nonprofit.

Darden Strategic Competition Initiative We also support student travel to attend strategic competitions in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation. In 2019–20, the institute sponsored 11 students to attend design, pitch and investment competitions across the U.S. prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team from Darden won second place in the annual Venture Capital Investment Competition hosted by the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler School of Business.

To help our students secure highly competitive and rare internship opportunities with early-stage ventures, we are proud to offer a unique pair of programs that provide support, selection, funding and mentorship for those committed to acquiring operational experience with a startup while they are at Darden.

Batten Technology Venture Fellowship

Batten Venture Internship Program

The Batten Technology Venture Fellows program offers Darden students an intensive, operational experience with early-stage technology ventures during a 10-week fellowship. The purpose of this program is to embed Darden MBAs in high-potential, high-growth ventures, giving them hands-on project experience; mentorship and coaching; a rich network of connections and contacts; and the inspiration to follow an entrepreneurial path after Darden.

This program provides Darden students the opportunity to pursue summer internships with startups. In addition, students may choose to work for search funds, recent grads conducting a search, or their portfolio companies.

Students gain the experience of working for a startup or closely held enterprise, and the ventures benefit from having access to talented Darden MBA students for the summer. To promote and support student involvement with these firms, Batten Institute provides a matching stipend to supplement a student’s summer salary, if the venture meets certain criteria.

The Psychology of Technology Institute partnered with the Batten Institute to convene the fourth annual New Directions in Research on the Psychology of Technology Conference. Professor Roshni Raveendhran led the conference, which brought together eminent scholars, industry experts and policymakers to reflect on critical challenges and unique opportunities emerging from technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making to promote better understanding of the human-technology relationship.

The Batten Institute co-sponsored the SEETA Conference with Duke Fuqua School of Business and the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School to educate, encourage and equip current students and recent MBA graduates in pursuit of the acquisition and operation of a small or mid-sized business.

ClimateCAP: The Global MBA Summit on Climate, Capital and Business 21–22 February 2020 Darden School of Business Organized by the Batten Institute through our Business and Climate Change Initiative, Darden hosted ClimateCAP, drawing more than 170 MBA students from 24 different business schools, as well as many Darden alumni and professors.

The aim of the event was to help MBAs gain a deeper understanding of how climate change is shaping industries and markets; where the biggest financial and operational risks lie; and what promising innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities are emerging. Batten Presents Created in response to the pandemic, Batten Presents is a new, virtual speaker series introduced in spring 2020 and hosted by the Batten Institute’s director of strategic initiatives, Robyn Swift. The series features industry leaders, experts and entrepreneurs who discuss their career paths, present-day roles, and perspectives on business. All Darden students were invited to attend each session, which included an interview and live Q&A. Select sessions were also available to UVA alumni.

Venture L(a)UNCH Meetup Venture L(a)UNCH, hosted by venture programs director, Jason Brewster, is a weekly lunch meetup for Darden student founders and faculty, funders, mentors and advisers. Participants are encouraged to present unmet needs related to their venture and to discuss how the group can help.

Venturing Projects (x) Through VP(x), the Batten Institute provides select Darden students and UVA alumni with enhanced support for developing ideas for new ventures. Darden students can pursue their own venture through an independent study format.

Support includes: • Proposal development assistance, including establishing meaningful learning objectives and measurable outcomes • Assistance selecting a faculty advisor • Regular milestone coaching and ongoing check-ins • Feedback on deliverables • Mentorship for validating, iterating and advancing the venture project, consistent with academic requirements

Venture Mentors and Advisers Program (vMAP) vMAP facilitates connections between industry experts and student entrepreneurs currently participating in our venture programs. The mentors and advisers volunteer to support students and early-stage startups by sharing their industry expertise, business knowledge, and other resources, as appropriate. The range of their backgrounds is extensive, covering industries such as biotech, big data and business analytics, artificial intelligence, clean and smart energy fintech, agriculture, product manufacturing, transportation, and retail.

VentureLab Goes Virtual

VentureLab Incubator shifted to an entirely virtual curriculum and coaching in the COVID-19 pandemic during summer 2020. The new approach featured a robust slate of instruction via video calls and online webinars with Darden faculty, including Professors Raul Chao, Damon DeVito, Yael Grushka-Cockayne, Saras Sarasvathy and June West, along with industry experts, such as Doug Lebda (EMBA ’14), founder and CEO of Lending Tree. In addition, for the first time, all speaker and workshop sessions were made freely available to current Darden students and alumni in order to complement their opportunities for lifelong learning.

VentureLab Incubator

Since its first cohort in 2000, VentureLab, an early-stage venture program, has provided nearly $1.5 million in grants to upwards of 275 companies, supporting nearly 450 founding team members. VentureLab welcomes applications from any team with at least one founder who is a current student, faculty, or staff member at UVA, including College at Wise, or is an alumnus/alumna from the past three years.

Catalyst Accelerator Catalyst is a long-format accelerator program, providing early-stage startups in Central Virginia with nine months of program support, including: $20,000 in grant funding, workspace, monthly programming, staff, a large network of founders and industry experts, and access to nearly $50,000 in additional resources.

Darden Partners Brittany Schmid and Katy Doar met while their husbands attended Darden and went on to found The Bunny Hive — a boutique social studio located in suburban Atlanta for parents and their children offering “grownup and me” classes designed for kids ages 0 to 3 years.

Rhoback, the line of stylish activewear owned and operated by Matt (MBA ’16) and Kristina Loftus (MBA ’17), has temporarily shifted much of its production from performance polo shirts, Q-Zip pullovers and performance T-shirts to face masks intended to stop the transmission of COVID-19.

2 UVA Darden Class of 2020 MBAs Working on At-Home Colon Cancer Screenings

Encouraged by Darden Professors Saras Sarasvathy and Damon DeVito, Saule Kassengaliyeva (MBA ’20) launched Piaz LLC, making and selling dumplings intended to pair perfectly with beer and tell the story of the culture from which they emerged.

For two years, Dr. Taison Bell (MBA ’20) and Timothy Harvey (MBA ’20) juggled the Darden Executive MBA program while getting their company, Owl Peak Labs, up and running. Its first product is an imaging pill that can scan a patient’s gastrointestinal tract for polyps or other early signs of colon cancer.

David Scharfman (MBA ’16) came on the show seeking a $500,000 investment for 5 percent of the equity in Just the Cheese, his company that produces bars that mimic the crunchy cheese from a grilled cheese sandwich that melts into the pan.
