Title: Does being an ethnic minority pupil affect the educational achievement in a secondary school in North London?

1. Abstract This research paper aims at assessing if belonging to an ethnic minority group would affect BAME educational achievement in school in North London. External and internal factors are reviewed to explore the different causes of their underachievement. The focus has been on the external factor of material deprivation and official data have shown a big socioeconomic gap between the poor and the rich in the borough of Islington. The data show the alarming child deprivation in the borough, the highest in London and the 4th in England. I have shown that there is a difference in achievement within and between ethnic minority groups due to cultural views on education of their parents. As far as gender is concerned, girls achieve higher than boys. However, cultural views on gender seem to be an obstacle for girls in Asian families to reach further or higher education. Social class, gender, culture, linguistic abilities and socio-economic factors seem to make a difference in achievement between and within BAME groups. 2. Introduction
