Dear Baton Rouge Community,

It is with great excitement, gratitude, and pride that I welcome you to Explore EBR Schools — a journey into the heart of who we are and where we’re going together.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System is more than a collection of campuses. It is a dynamic, diverse, and determined community. Whether you’re a long-standing member of our school family or considering joining us for the first time, I want you to know that we have a place for you — in a district that is boldly reimagining what’s possible for every student, every family, and every neighborhood.

In this magazine, you’ll discover just how expansive and inclusive our offerings truly are. Our portfolio includes tuition-free, award-winning programs, dual enrollment opportunities, magnet, gifted and talented education, language immersion, career training, and early college pathways. But beyond the programs and accolades, what makes our system exceptional is our people: nearly 6,000 dedicated educators, leaders, and staff members who come to work each day with a single focus — supporting our students’ success.

As we prepare to launch a new school year filled with possibility and purpose, we believe the key to success lies in support. Behind every student, every thriving campus, and every inspired classroom is a network of care, guidance, and encouragement. That’s why our commitment this year is simple but powerful: to provide the kind of support that unlocks potential, removes barriers, and sets students and families up for success.

We’re moving boldly and intentionally. Our new districtwide instructional framework is designed to give teachers clarity and encourage creativity, while ensuring that every student receives highquality instruction and targeted support.

This year, you’ll hear us say it often: Dare to be Great. It’s not just a tagline — it’s our call to action. We’re challenging ourselves and our students to dream bigger, aim higher, and work together to make greatness real. Because when we dare to be great, we discover just how far we can go — together.

At the heart of this work is a singular belief: greatness lives within every student, every educator, and every school. Our job is to ignite it, nurture it, and watch it soar.

Whether through upgraded facilities, stronger academic plans, new communication strategies, or enhanced support services, every step we’re taking is meant to elevate your experience as a family in our beloved district.

Thank you for choosing EBR Schools. Thank you for your trust, your partnership, and your belief in what we can build. We can’t wait to welcome your family into a year filled with promise, progress, and the kind of support that makes greatness not just possible — but inevitable.

With appreciation,

TEACHERS OF THE YEAR C

CHRISTOPHER FRAZIER

ANGELLE CARTER

Q: What led you to teaching?

A: I originally aspired to be a computer animator for educational platforms like PBS. But after being introduced to teaching, I discovered a surprising passion for it. I found joy in connecting with students, fostering their creativity, and watching them grow. My love for writing, art, and technology has never been lost; instead, it has enriched my teaching approach. This unexpected journey revealed that teaching could be just as impactful and fulfilling as my original aspiration, allowing me to inspire the next generation in ways I had never imagined.

Q: What makes you passionate about teaching?

A: I love witnessing the transformation of my students as they grow and develop after leaving my elementary class. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see them apply the knowledge and skills they’ve gained, pursue their passions, and become confident individuals. Knowing that you’ve had a positive impact on their journey and contributed to their success makes the challenges of teaching worthwhile.

Q: How do you relax or unwind?

A: By walking through nature, which brings me joy and a sense of freedom. I love to immerse myself in designing, cooking, creative writing, and enjoying a good movie as well. I also enjoy challenging myself to learn new skills every month, keeping my passions fresh and exciting.

AMBER LACOUR

Q: How did you decide to become a teacher?

A: Teaching is actually my second career. I worked in the insurance industry and when a few coworkers discovered I had a degree in mathematics, they asked me to tutor their children. I did not discover how much I loved working with young people until I started tutoring those kids, so I took a leap of faith and found my calling.

Q: What is most rewarding about teaching?

A: Most students (and adults for that matter) are intimidated by math, so it’s challenging to help them overcome the obstacles they have about math. Watching my students grow and become unafraid of making mistakes leads to those “lightbulb” moments. Those are the moments I thrive on, and they bring me pure joy!

Q: What do you love to do when you’re not teaching?

A: Spending time with my husband, and our two children. My favorite hobby is cooking with my husband. We get to spend time together and share our creations with our kids. When I am alone, I love to read, put together puzzles, or listen to true crime podcasts.

CHRISTOPHER FRAZIER

Q: How did you decide to become a teacher?

A: During my student teaching experience, I developed a genuine passion for teaching and mentoring young string orchestra musicians. Teaching wasn’t something I originally envisioned for myself, but the creative side of me recognized that this path was both a calling and a purpose. It became clear that this was the right career choice—one where I could make a lasting impact.

Q: What makes you proud to be an educator?

A: The most rewarding aspect of teaching is witnessing my students grow, succeed, and pursue their own dreams— whether that means attending college, earning scholarships, becoming professional musicians, or even following in my footsteps to become band and orchestra directors. I’ve had the honor of seeing several of my former students rise to become educators themselves, now challenging and inspiring their own students just as they were once inspired in our program.

Q: What are your hobbies or special interests?

A: Spending quality time with my family, many of whom are also musicians … performing with my wife, listening to music with my son—especially jazz—and attending my daughter’s vocal performances. I also like gardening, composing music, cooking, and traveling whenever I have the opportunity.

BERNARD WILLIAMS

Q: When and why did you choose a career in education?

A: My passion for education developed before I became an educator. I saw that the inability to read increases the likelihood of incarceration, and I wanted to bring a change for students who looked like me. Education must be introduced at birth.

Q: What approach should be taken to educate students?

A: Students should be allowed to express their interests and should be taught social and emotional skills. Providing support and opportunities for students to explore their interests motivates students to invest in their learning.

Q: What do you envision for the future of education?

A: I hope that in the future, education will include more real-life applications in the curriculum.

KYLE FONTENETTE

Q: What makes Mayfair Lab such a special place to work?

A: Mayfair Lab has a strong and supportive community that includes our dedicated faculty, engaged parents, amazing students, and invested community stakeholders. This collaborative environment makes our school a positive and fun place to work.

Q: How do you feel about leading Mayfair Lab?

A: I feel incredibly lucky to have the honor of continuing to lead such a wonderful school. Mayfair Lab’s designation as a National Blue Ribbon school is a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our entire community.

Q: What are your hopes for the 2025–2026 school year?

A: I hope that Mayfair Lab continues to strengthen its sense of community and remains focused on helping all students grow both academically and socially.

JOHN HAYMAN

Q: Why are you passionate about education?

A: I’m passionate about education because it has the power to level the playing field and help children realize their true potential. It can truly open doors and change lives.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work?

A: There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a child learn a new concept or skill and then apply it in a meaningful way. Those moments of growth and discovery are why I do this work.

Q: What are your hopes for students in the upcoming school year?

A: My wish is that students take ownership of their education, set meaningful goals for their future, and stay motivated and determined to succeed throughout the year.

Early childhood education program lays the foundation for future success

As parents, we all want the best for our children — a strong start that will set them up for lifelong learning and achievement. This is what the East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s early childhood education program aims to provide.

Recognizing the critical importance of the formative early years, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System has made a concerted effort to deliver high-quality, comprehensive programming for children from infancy through pre-kindergarten.

“Our biggest push is to make sure that children enter kindergarten on level and on time,” says Shenoa Warren, executive director of the district’s Early Childhood office.

“We work closely with our partners, providing them with a robust curriculum, expert instruction, and a common assessment tool to track progress across all age groups.”

From infants to 3-year-olds to pre-K-4, the district’s program covers the full spectrum of early childhood development. Highly trained educators implement research-based teaching methods to foster cognitive, physical, social and emotional growth. Regular assessments monitor each child’s advancement, allowing teachers to tailor their approach and address any emerging needs.

For pre-K-4 students, EBR’s fullday program follows a typical school-day schedule, with meals and naptime built in. The results

speak for themselves. While pre-K is not mandatory, children enrolled in the East Baton Rouge program demonstrate marked improvements in kindergarten readiness. They enter the elementary grades with the skills, knowledge and confidence to thrive.

“We’ve seen firsthand how this program prepares children for longterm success,” says Crystal Allen, pre-K-4 director. “The academic foundation they build, coupled with the social-emotional support, gives them a tremendous advantage as they progress through school and beyond.”

According to the annual report cards released recently by the Louisiana Department of Education, the EBR Early Childhood Community Network (171 sites) improved overall from a 5.45 rating to a 5.60, maintaining its high-proficiency early childhood rating. The network increased more than half of its high-proficiency centers to an excellent rating. Additionally, most of the partner sites in the EBR Early Childhood Community Network moved into the high-proficient rating category.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s early childhood program is laying the groundwork for students to reach their full potential. With waived tuition for families who meet the eligibility requirements, the program aims to remove financial barriers and ensure equitable access to early childhood education.
