CELEBRATE

Time to Party! The capital city hosts plenty of festivals, parades and special events … and you’re invited to all of them!

Special Events

Zippity Zoo Fest (April 2) at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo always attracts a crowd, as does the annual Baton Rouge Blues Festival (April 23-24); and the Pearl Harbor Remembrance (December 7) at the USS Kidd Memorial downtown.

Parades

In Baton Rouge, we love a parade, starting with our exciting Carnival Season that sees Mardi Gras parades rolling through several areas, including downtown and the Southdowns neighborhood; and the popular Wearin’ of the Green St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Shamrock Run (March 19) in the Garden District. And be sure to bring the family to the Halloween and Christmas parades!

Festivals

Many of Baton Rouge’s popular festivals and celebrations are back on the calendar, including the annual 4th of July celebration; and Rural Life Christmas (December) at the Rural Life Museum, to name a few.

SIGHTSEE

New Orleans New Orleans is just about 80 miles down Interstate 10. Tour the French Quarter, stroll along the Riverwalk, enjoy café au lait and beignets at Café du Monde, dine at great restaurants, visit the St. Louis Cathedral, and browse the shops and outdoor artist offerings surrounding the Vieux Carre.

Daytrip Destinations The Capital City is filled with unique attractions, but if you find yourself with extra time on your hands, here are some daytrip destinations “just down the road.” Pick a parish.

East Feliciana In the rolling hills just north of Baton Rouge in East Feliciana Parish, Barn Hill Preserve is a must-visit zoological facility that promotes animal education and conservation. Get a hands-on educational experience with exotic animals and guided encounter tours. (Don’t miss the special sloth visits or swimming with Asian small-clawed otters.) It’s a wonderful experience sure to create lasting memories. Visit barnhillpreserve.com.

18

West Feliciana St. Francisville is the place where John James Audubon was inspired to write his treasured series Birds of America. So be sure to check out the birds, trails, flora and fauna in this beautiful region. This charming town is also the site of the Myrtles Plantation, often called the Most Haunted House in America—antebellum splendor linked to a ghostly past. Plan your adventure at explorewestfeliciana.com.

Lafayette Less than an hour away is the city of Lafayette, set in the middle of Cajun country and home to a unique culture of music, food, and crafts. Stroll downtown and pop into one of many live music venues, have lunch at the Blue Dog Café, take a swamp tour, and on your way home, pick up some specialty sausages, boudin, or smoked tasso.

West Baton Rouge Take a drive across the bridge to the West Baton Rouge Museum, the only museum in the nation to feature the history of sugar agriculture from the antebellum period (18301860) through Reconstruction (18701880) and into the 1960s, all set on the same plantation, Allendale. Visit westbatonrougemuseum.org.

Louisiana is the only state in the country divided into parishes rather than counties. It’s a remnant of a bygone era when Louisiana was mostly Roman Catholic under the reign of both France and Spain, and its territories generally coincided with church parishes. In 1807, the term was officially adopted.

HISTORY

Jambalaya Capital of the World IN 1967 this term was only an inspiration in the mind of Steve Juneau to promote the city of Gonzales. A native of Avoyelles, Juneau was impressed with the jambalaya prepared by area cooks and thought this would be a great way to promote the city. The idea was presented to the Gonzales Lions Club and the annual Jambalaya Festival was born. As the idea spread across Ascension Parish, many nonprofit civic groups and fraternal organizations were invited to get involved. The

festival would be used as a vehicle to raise money for community projects. What began as an inspiration had become too big for any one group to take on independently. An executive committee was formed and Juneau was elected as the first president of the newly formed Jambalaya Festival Association. On June 10, 1968, John J. McKeithen, then Governor of Louisiana, proclaimed Gonzales, Louisiana as the “Jambalaya Capital of the World.”
