AFTER THE HISTORIC flooding that devastated our community in August, the silver lining was the way people stepped up, came together, and gave of their time and treasure to help those in need. Our community showed both resilience and character. Of course, we all know that many of our charities and nonprofits operate yearround to serve in similar ways. We don’t want to forget about these wonderful organizations. On Nov. 15, Americans celebrated National Philanthropy Day. The Association of Fundraising Professionals of Greater Baton Rouge hosted a luncheon at the Renaissance Hotel to celebrate and honor local philanthropists. inRegister magazine, which features charitable events and philanthropic leaders throughout the year, was proud to be a presenting sponsor for this event. The 2016 honorees are featured on page 9. We salute them and all of those individuals and companies in the Capital Region who give generously to help others and build our community. The end of the year is a time when many will traditionally make donation decisions for the year—or budget for the next year. This unique publication concept of a “giving guide” can be helpful to you, our readers, as you or your company plan your own philanthropy.

As shown so clearly in August, Louisiana has always been about the goodness and kindness of neighbors, friends and family—who help others in time of crisis or just with everyday needs. We are there for one another. Much of that help comes from the many nonprofits, charities and institutions of learning supported by the generosity of donors and volunteers—like you. THE ENORMITY of the August flooding has significantly altered our community and the way it looks today, but that change doesn’t have to be for the worse. statewide network of pediatric excellence. The new hospital will help us further support community pediatricians throughout the state and provide specialty care in outreach clinics in Monroe, Gonzales, Hammond and Lafayette. THE YEAR 2016 has certainly been one for the history books. While our community mourned the loss of a community member and three police officers, we were hit with a 1,000-year flood that impacted every one of us in some way. Thousands lost their homes and continue to be displaced while we begin to rebuild. In the midst of this strife, when it may have been easier to give up, we have seen our friends and neighbors rise to the occasion to support one another and begin to rebuild. Together. It has never been more apparent that our community is stronger when we join together than it has been over the last few months. At Capital Area United Way, we know that we can achieve more for our community when we work together as one community, one people. We have been fortunate enough to serve the Capital Region for the last 91 years, and we have always invested your donations in programs that are making a difference for the people who live here. This year, we implemented a new way of doing business that allows us to achieve more, help local individuals and families in a more meaningful way and truly puts people in a position to recognize and achieve their full potential.

We accomplish this by investing donated resources in programs and partnerships that have significant impact within our community focusing on five areas: education, income stability, health, basic needs and communitylevel strategies. This new way of doing business is called Community Impact, and it is driven by you—our community. Our goal is to move the needle by creating a ripple of real change that not only touches lives today, but impacts the future of our community for generations to come. INTRODUCTION

PHILANTHROPY IS “the love of humankind,” and National Philanthropy Day® is the day that thousands of people around the world come together to both put that word into action and to recognize the change that word has brought to our communities. In short, NPD is a celebration of philanthropy— giving, volunteering and charitable engagement—that highlights the accomplishments, large and small, that philanthropy—and all those involved in the philanthropic process—brings to our society. National Philanthropy Day® is both an official day and a grassroots movement to increase public interest and awareness of the importance of philanthropy, as well as knowledge on giving, volunteering and engagement at the charitable level. Every year since 1986 when President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day®, communities have celebrated by hosting events to recognize the activities of donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders and corporations engaged in philanthropy. While many people show interest in giving or getting involved, they often need a reminder about nonprofit needs and need to be inspired by stories of success. NPD spurs action by providing ways for people to connect with causes and each other—so they can be inspired by what others are doing and create their own ideas for philanthropic engagement. The Association of Fundraising Professionals is founder of the NPD movement, and we work with organizations that support philanthropy and charitable engagement. Since its inception in 1960, AFP has been helping nonprofits and charities and supporting fundraising efforts around the world that have generated more than $1 trillion. The Greater Baton Rouge Chapter of AFP has been in existence since 1989. Through the commitment of the AFP members, the chapter is flourishing today with more than 120 members serving in nonprofit development fields. 8

MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center’s mission is inspired by the vision of St. Francis of Assisi and in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to God’s people, especially those most in need. Our Lady of the Lake Foundation is a nonprofit organization established to preserve the vision and quality of health services at the medical center. Proceeds from all fundraising activities help to begin new programs, purchase stateof-the-art equipment and enhance the scope of services.

SERVICE AREA Our primary service area is the nineparish Capital Region. Additionally, our 24/7 transport team can transfer critically ill children from across Louisiana, Mississippi and East Texas who need specialized care not available in their hometowns.

GIVING DONATIONS SUPPORT Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital Capital Campaign to build a freestanding children’s hospital, which will open its doors by summer of 2019. This new hospital will serve all children of Louisiana. 70 percent of the children we serve are on Medicaid or have no insurance. We do not

MANY PEOPLE DO not realize that just one dollar can provide food for four meals. There are a number of opportunities available for individuals and businesses to support our fight against hunger through charitable giving to your Food Bank. • • • • • • • •

YOUR FOOD BANK simply could not operate without the continued support of so many volunteers around our community. Last year, 2,160 volunteers gave more than 26,280 hours of volunteer time. Before the August flooding, your Food Bank had already surpassed the number of volunteers from all of 2015. APRIL IS CHILD Abuse Prevention Month, and we promote awareness through our Pinwheels for Prevention campaign. In 2016 we planted Pinwheel gardens at the State Capitol and Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge, as well as other locations in New Orleans, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Houma, Thibodaux and Hammond. We distributed more than 21,500 Pinwheels to schools, hospitals, pediatricians’ offices, private businesses, Child Advocacy Centers and CASA centers. Kappa Delta’s national philanthropy is Prevent Child Abuse America, and every year the LSU Kappa Delta Chapter hosts a jambalaya sale during

the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Baton Rouge. Save the Date: A fun family event is coming Saturday, March 25, 2017!

With the rising costs of education, TAF seeks to fulfill athletic scholarship needs that make a lasting impact on the education of student-

athletes and take the financial burden off of the athletic department. Additionally, philanthropic programs help sustain the tradition of a superior athletic program through the construction or preservation of facilities that provide revenue and recruiting tools or support student-athletes in training and in the classroom.

FUNDRAISING/EVENTS TAF ANNUALLY HOSTS a number of events that benefit LSU’s student-athletes and support organizations, including: Tigerama in support of the LSU Tiger Band and the President’s Cup Golf Tournament in support of the LSU Men’s and Women’s Golf teams. MISSION STATEMENT To set children on a solid path to healing and justice by providing traumainformed, efficient and coordinated child-focused services in the aftermath of abuse and violent crime.

SERVICE AREA The BRCAC serves all youthful victims (ages 3-18) of violent crimes in the greater Baton Rouge area, including East and West Baton Rouge, Iberville and Pointe Coupee parishes.

BRCAC IS SEEKING people with diverse gifts and talents to offer their time. Some examples of volunteer opportunities include: • peer mentoring and community outreach in schools and at events • maintenance and improvements to our safe space • outreach to families at other sites, such as hospitals, when abuse is reported • assisting with promotional events and workshops • providing legal assistance and advocacy • providing expressive and performing arts opportunities for children

The Baton Rouge Children’s Advocacy Center is the only entity offering the unique and full spectrum of services to children victimized by crime and their families at no cost. OUR SINGULAR GOAL is to provide adaptive bikes to children with spina bifida, cerebral palsy, Battens Disease, Charge Syndrome, Down Syndrome and chromosomal abnormalities of every description. These bikes help the children build critical core strength as well as confidence and inclusion. The foundation has provided over 200 bikes in the last nine years. These bikes range in cost from $800 to over $5,000. The demand for these bikes is endless. We currently have 300 children on our waiting list. Our immediate goal is to get each of these children riding their own adaptive bike as soon as possible.

100% OF ALL funds raised are used to purchase these adaptive bikes, which the foundation purchases at significant discount from the bike manufacturers. All donations are tax deductible. Once a child outgrows a bike, the foundation picks it up, cleans it up and gets the bike into the hands of another deserving child. The foundation then provides a new, larger bike to the first child to keep them riding. (We have bikes on their fourth child and many children on their second bike.)

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of MFF is to provide adaptive bikes to special needs children so that they can build critical core strength, boost confidence and nurture friendships, all of which help these children maximize their potential and participation in society.

SERVICE AREA MFF has a very strong presence in Baton Rouge and the surrounding area as well as throughout all of south Louisiana. Additionally, we have bikes placed in 27 states. Donors making contributions to MFF can identify a particular family, pediatric rehabilitation facility or city or state that they would like their gift to be directed towards.

WHAT STARTED OUT 9 years ago as a “Bikes for Christmas” project quickly turned into a yearround endeavor. All of our funding comes from individuals and corporations who are passionate about seeing these special children experience the right of passage of every child–riding their own bike. Groups including schools, health clubs, car dealerships, groups of friends, etc. have joined together to fund a bike for a child. Many bike presentations have been made at the place of business of the donor groups making for a very special charitable event. VOLUNTEERING/ GIVING MFF IS A family-managed, 100% volunteerbased organization that has no employees or payroll. We have volunteers that help with fundraising, bike assembly and delivery, videography and photography, etc.

SOME ADVENTUROUS SOULS do an extreme adventure to raise funding for the McLindon Family Foundation. They post their event on our sister Facebook page, The MFF Challenge, and spread the word of their adventure through social media to raise funds. Currently, we have a couple that are riding their recumbent bikes 5,500 miles across America! Our multidisciplinary treatment includes: physical, occupational, and speech and language therapy; medical, social and psychological services; educational therapy, assistive communication technology and intensive therapy. OPEN HEALTH CARE CLINIC’S 2017 fundraising goal is to raise the money to purchase and retrofit a Mobile Dental Unit to serve the entire East Baton Rouge Parish community. The campaign is called Open Wide and would provide preventive and diagnostic dental care for adults and children right here in our community. Dental services are a seriously unmet need among adults and pediatric patients here in Baton Rouge. Open Wide will bring these essential services to our neighbors right in our neighborhoods. East Baton Rouge’s low-income population faces particularly high barriers to accessing oral health care including provider shortages, lack of insurance coverage, transportation limitations and language barriers. Good oral health is more than just a cosmetic concern. Among children, dental problems are associated with poor self-image and feelings of worthlessness, as well as poor attendance at and performance in school. In adults, chronic oral infections are linked to a multitude of diseases including heart disease

and diabetes, while missing and malformed teeth prevent otherwise qualified candidates from finding work. In pregnant women, inadequate oral health care is associated with prematurity and low birth weight. Open Wide will help prevent these adverse health conditions by meeting our community where we live and work and play. And while OHCC is out in the community taking care of people’s smiles, we will offer health screenings for other acute and chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as providing essential vaccines and health literacy and educational opportunities to everyone who calls our community home. With your financial support, we can help give everyone in our community a brighter, whiter, healthier smile and the confidence to approach life’s challenges with their hearts and minds—and mouths—Open Wide.
