A ARTE DA INCONFORMIDADE

A 14ª edição do Multiplicidade foi aberta em setembro de 2018, mês que começou com a tragédia que devastou o Museu Nacional, um dos maiores patrimônios de conhecimento do Brasil. Incêndio que destruiu não só a construção secular da Quinta da Boa Vista, mas que trouxe à tona, da pior maneira possível, a fundamental discussão sobre história/memória/construção de cidadania.

Nesse mesmo setembro, enquanto o Centro Cultural Oi Futuro era ocupado pelo Multiplicidade, um empreendimento imobiliário de proporções gigantescas crescia ao redor de nosso prédio, devendo mudar, para sempre, a paisagem dos bairros do Catete e do Flamengo. Dessa forma, o tema do festival – Espaços Utópicos – tornou-se mais pertinente do que nunca.

Entre as grandes atrações do Multiplicidade, estava a instalação Tape, criada especialmente para o Oi Futuro pelo coletivo Numen, sediado em Berlim. O penetrável, construído com fita adesiva, atraiu uma multidão de espectadores, alavancando a audiência do festival, que bateu recorde de público em 2018 e tornando a obra de arte uma das mais fotografadas do ano.

O Numen espalhou-se também pela sede do Instituto dos Arquitetos do Brasil RJ, criando um circuito de visitação entre os dois prédios vizinhos. Além do IAB-RJ, o Multiplicidade ocupou lugares da cidade ainda inexplorados pelo festival em sua história de sucesso, como a Sede das Cias e a Fundição Progresso (durante o Festival Colaboramerica) e o LabSonica, novo laboratório de experimentação artística do Oi Futuro.

A melhor característica do Multiplicidade sempre foi a inquietação. A vocação da curadoria, desde a origem, foi refletir o seu tempo. Discutir as cidades, o mundo e as possíveis utopias dos cidadãos, durante os 85 dias de programação, só fez reforçar a força da arte contemporânea no mundo conturbado de hoje. Pensar sobre lugares possíveis versus lugares desejados, com sons e imagens que reverberam para além da instantaneidade, só fez ajudar, a cada um de nós, a existir/resistir de um modo melhor.

THE ART OF NONCONFORMITY The 14th edition of Festival Multiplicidade opened in September 2018, the month that began with the tragedy that ravaged the National Museum of Brazil, one of the country’s greatest heritage sites. The fire destroyed not only the centuries-old construction of Quinta da Boa Vista, but also brought to the fore, in the worst possible way, a fundamental discussion on history/memory/construction of citizenship.

That same month, while the Oi Futuro Cultural Center was receiving Festival Multiplicidade, a gigantic real estate enterprise grew around our building, to forever change the face of the Catete and Flamengo neighbourhoods. Thus, the theme of the festival – Utopian Spaces – became more relevant than ever.

Among the great attractions of the festival was the installation Tape, created especially for Oi Futuro by the Berlin-based Numen collective. The penetrable, made with adhesive tape, attracted a great number of visitors and made the festival beat record audience ratings in 2018. Tape was one of the most photographed artworks of the year.

Numen also exhibited at the headquarters of the Institute of Architects of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro (IAB-RJ), creating a flow of visitors between the two neighbouring buildings. Besides IAB-RJ, Multiplicidade occupied two places of the city that had not yet been explored by the festival during its successful existence, like Sede das Cias and Fundição Progresso (during Festival Colaboramerica) and LabSonica, the new laboratory of artistic experimentation of Oi Futuro.

The greatest feature of Multiplicidade has always been its restlessness. The curators’ mission was from the beginning to reflect on their own times. Discussing the cities, the world and the possible utopias of its citizens, during the 85 days of the festival, has only reinforced the strength of contemporary art in today’s troubled world. Thinking about possible places versus desired places, with sounds and images that reverberated beyond their instantaneousness, has greatly helped each of us to exist/resist in a better way.

No meio da travessia, tinha uma pedra1. Pedra que demarcava territórios distintos e polarizados, negativos e positivos, com amor e ódio, com paz e guerra. De um lado o branco; de outro, o preto. A ausência e a soma de todas as cores, lado a lado, representando nossas afinidades, contrastes, correspondências e contradições. Se no meio do caminho tinha uma pedra, era preciso transpô-la. Era preciso caminhar. Era preciso atravessá-la. Era preciso ter resiliência para seguir adiante.

Tinha uma pedra no meio da travessia e o #MULTIPLICIDADE2018 apostou na projeção do espaço-tempo através da arte. Desde a Grécia Antiga, a busca por alternativas de sociedade perpassou a literatura e a arte, revelando outras narrativas: do distópico ao quimérico.

Depois de transpor-se para 2025 – num exercício futurístico de antevisão, ao completar em 2015 uma década continuada –, foi o tema ESPAÇOS UTÓPICOS que norteou nossas ações em 2018.

Em tempos incertos e de tons sombrios, nosso mote foi o RESISTIR e o EXISTIR como única saída [EXIT].

A força e visualidade destas palavras foram o motor, o catalisador desta edição, pois como bem apontou o poeta Torquato Neto nos anos 70, “as palavras não são armas inúteis”. Desde sua primeira edição, o MULTIPLICIDADE é atravessado pelas reminiscências das tecnologias do passado e pelo desejo das tecnologias futuras. Mas, no presente, o corpo humano ainda é o que está por trás de todas as invenções, tentando sempre RESISTIR e buscar novas formas de EXISTIR num cenário à deriva.

Ao longo de 14 anos, apresentamos obras que aspiram a um lugar melhor do que o aqui e o agora. Como de praxe, a programação sempre é extremamente variada, composta por artistas de diferentes horizontes e origens, e investiga como os escapes pela arte são plurais.

A escolha por repertórios híbridos e indisciplinados acompanha o MULTIPLICIDADE desde sua origem.

Por mais distintas que sejam suas linguagens, os trabalhos aqui reunidos são peças fundamentais num labirinto que tenta compor caminhos de utopia, insistência e romantismo poético.

Em 2018, com Iceberg, obra de Fernando Velázquez que se desdobrou numa impressão gráfica de grandes proporções e numa instalação VR, o espectador pode refletir

sobre essa montanha de gelo, e sobretudo sobre como ela se assemelha à nossa consciência, na medida em que só acessamos uma pequena parte desta, e outra fica submersa, oculta.

O octogenário Phill Niblock nos honrou com sua presença, apresentando Environment Series ao vivo, e com a participação especialíssima de Livio Tragtenberg.

Depois, tivemos a oportunidade única de apresentar seu grandioso The Movement of People Working, um cinema expandido que mostra o movimento coreográfico dos corpos de trabalhadores mundo afora, nos revelando não só imagens estonteantemente belas, como um mundo construído graças ao trabalho de muitas mãos juntas.

Muros desabam, bairros se transformam, cidades cedem à gentrificação. Cabe a nós reinventá-las, para que, através delas, possamos ressignificar paisagens imaginárias, em busca de futuros viáveis.

Foi com isso em mente que Pedro Varella concebeu suas ações no pátio. Uma forma encontrada para deslocar o olhar do espectador e questionar seu entorno e sua própria posição. Pedro propôs novas formas de ver, sempre remetendo ao passado.

O coletivo NUMEN permite ao espectador entrar em contato consigo mesmo e com tantos outros sentimentos. Tape é uma obra de camadas, literalmente, posto que era feita de muitas e muitas passadas de fita adesiva. E também, por muitas e muitas mãos. Uma equipe de 15 pessoas construiu a obra em dois sítios e 10 dias, usando 32 km de fita adesiva.

Deslocamento, pausa, afeto, desconexão. Essa escultura monumental com ares de casulo ou de útero permitiu ao visitante um hiato no dia a dia, vivenciar a coragem de penetrar em um ambiente que parecia frágil, e, uma vez ali dentro, experimentar o tranquilo prazer da suspensão. Fitas durex do nosso dia a dia que foram ressignificadas numa escultura penetrável que jovens de todas as idades puderam vivenciar, tirando-os do lugar de espectador passivo e contemplativo. Tape ganhou interesse especial das crianças, que se encantaram

com a descoberta de um espaço inédito. Arte e vida se confundindo de forma lúdica.

O MULTIPLICIDADE propôs ao público outras formas de pensar, estar e habitar o espaço comum. A saída que nos moveu não aponta necessariamente para fora. Há saídas possíveis por entre e para dentro.

Por fim, é importante lembrar que as saídas propostas por Espaços Utópicos, só se fazem possíveis graças a todxs que resistem juntos, livres e leves, pois ninguém larga a mão de ninguém.

In the middle of the road there was a stone.1 A stone that demarcated different and polarised territories, love and hate, war and peace.

On one side, white, on the other, black. The total absence and the mix of all colours, side by side, representing our affinities, contrasts, correspondences and contradictions. If in the middle of the road there was a stone, it was necessary to overcome it. It was necessary to walk. It was necessary to have resilience in order to keep going.

In the middle of the road there was a stone and #MULTIPLICIDADE2018 relied on the projection of space-time through art.

Since Ancient Greece, the search for alternatives for society permeates literature and art, revealing alternative narratives: from the dystopic to the chimerical. After imagining the year 2025 – in a futuristic exercise, completing a continuous decade in 2015 –, UTOPIAN SPACES was the theme that guided our actions in 2018.

In uncertain and dark times, our motto was RESISTING and EXISTING as the only EXIT. The strength and visuality of these words were the motive, the catalyst of this edition, because, as poet Torquato Neto pointed out in the 1970s, “words are not useless weapons.” Since its first edition, MULTIPLICIDADE has been pervaded by memories of old technologies and by a desire for future ones. But, in the here-and-now, the human body is still behind all inventions, always trying to RESIST, seeking new ways to EXIST in a scenario of uncertainty.

Over the course of 14 years, we have always presented works that aspire to a better place than the here-and-now. As usual, the line-up is extremely varied, with artists of different fields and origins, investigating how plural are our ways out through art.

The choice of hybrid and undisciplined repertoires has been a constant in MULTIPLICIDADE since its inception. No matter how different their languages, the works 12

brought together here are fundamental pieces in a labyrinth that tries to build ways toward utopias, insistence and poetic romanticism.

In 2018, with Iceberg, a large graphic print and VR installation by Fernando Velazquez, the audience was able to think about that ice mountain, and above all about how it resembled our conscience, as we can only access a small part of it while most of it remains hidden.

The octogenarian Phill Niblock honoured us with his presence presenting his Environment Series live, with the very special participation of Livio Tragtenberg. We also had the unique opportunity to present The Movement of People Working, an expanded-cinema work that shows the choreographic movement of the bodies of workers around the world, revealing not only dazzling images, but also how our world is built through collective work.

Walls collapse, neighbourhoods are transformed, cities give way to gentrification. It is up to us to reinvent them, so that through them we are able to re-signify imaginary landscapes, in search of viable futures. It was with that in mind that Pedro Varella conceived his “actions in the courtyard.” The way he found to displace the spectator’s gaze and question his own surroundings and position.

The NUMEN collective allows viewers to get in touch with themselves and with many different feelings.Tape is literally a work of many layers, since it was made with many pieces of adhesive tape, by many hands. A team of 15 people built the work in two different places in 10 days, using 32 km of adhesive tape.

Displacement, pause, affection, disconnection. The monumental sculpture, similar to a cocoon or uterus, offered visitors a hiatus in their daily lives, an experience of courage as they penetrated a seemingly fragile environment and, once inside, experienced the calm pleasure of suspension. Adhesive tapes that

are part of our everyday lives were re-signified in a penetrable sculpture that young people of all ages could experience, allowing them to move away from the role of passive and contemplative spectators. Tape was particularly appealing to children, who were captivated by a new space. Art and life converging in a playful way.

MULTIPLICIDADE proposed to the public different ways of thinking, being and inhabiting common spaces. The exit that motivated us does not necessarily point outwards. There are possible exits in-between and inwards.

Finally, it is important to remember that the exits proposed by Utopian Spaces are only possible thanks to all those who resist together, with freedom and lightness, because no one lets go of anyone’s hand.

EXISTÊNCIA, RESISTÊNCIA E EXPANSÃO

Talvez o primeiro passo para o salto sobre o abismo seja acreditar que não existe apenas uma existência. Acreditar que somos múltiplas existências, que existimos simultaneamente em múltiplas dimensões da vida.

Existo aqui, na hora em que escrevo, existo aí, na hora em que você lê, existimos quando lembram de nós em qualquer lugar, existimos quando nosso nome é evocado por alguém. Existir para além do corpo que perece como pensamento radical de transformação de cada um e do mundo de cada um. Pensar que a existência não é apenas resistir às mortes (o mundo acaba todo dia), mas também existir muitas vezes, re-existir diariamente, como se pudéssemos nos refundar a todo instante. Ao fazermos da vida uma multiplicidade, a utopia se faz em cada gesto, em cada marca, em cada rastro, em cada dito como um som que ressoa infinitamente. A utopia, aqui, é o que cada um faz com sua vida.

Maneiras de existir.

Imaginemos que cada um dos atos que fazemos são um pequeno pedaço de durex. Aos poucos, sem percebermos, colamos um no outro, sem saber ao certo a forma que o dia a dia irá dar a essa prática. Sem controles prévios, porém sem abandonar um projeto mínimo – existir, todos os dias –, iniciamos uma espécie de estrutura cujas partes são frágeis, porém o todo ganha tônus imprevisto. Os atos do cotidiano constroem a rede de gestos, conversas, trabalhos, afetos, vitórias e derrotas, enquanto seguimos dobrando a aposta, mesmo que tudo aponte para um fim da linha. Existir, em algum momento, se torna essa estrutura coesa de durex, imensa, densa, trama de mínimos que produz uma arquitetura de máximos. Vivemos dentro e fora de nossa própria existência, de nossa própria arquitetura, habitamos essa utopia – viver é risco – e seguimos a construção coletiva de nós mesmos. Tal construção se dá ao entendermos que somos singulares justamente ao nos articularmos com as diferenças de mundos. Tijolo a tijolo, durex a durex, vidas entre vidas, construímos uma morada para nossas múltiplas existências – e para todas as outras existências que nos atravessam.

Não há nada fora daqui, dessa vida, que produza utopias. O desejo de outras realidades libertadoras, de outros tempos salvadores, deve ser aspirado para entendermos que precisamos ativá-los no agora. Tudo que transborda essa existência retorna como motor de superação do que atravessamos. Se o mundo maquínico do silício consome nossas vistas, também já fazemos dele uma posse transgressora na produção de novos sentidos. Realidades virtuais criam mais um espaço para existirmos expandidos, para fundarmos outras existências, reinventarmos o mundo através da máquina. Mergulhar em ondas cerebrais, passear pelas nossas sinapses, fazer do corpo um começo, não um fim. Ir além da carcaça exausta e dos olhos entupidos de imagem e produzir um dentro do dentro, cavar pra fora, fazer do deslocamento radical de espaços uma bússola 14

para se perder em novos mares – do passado, do presente e do futuro.

Existir em múltiplas frentes é ser, simultaneamente, arquivo e invenção.

Ser virtual e ser histórico, estar aqui e em todos os lugares possíveis de se imaginar. Se deslocar através de múltiplos corpos para entender que utopia não é fugir do que lhe cerca, mas sim radicalizar a fome do agora.

Assim, multiplicar existências, ampliar os laços se expandindo através de cada vínculo que se cria, absorver o tempo e o espaço contemporâneos para ir além deles, são gestos cujo resultado nos faz atravessar qualquer fim dos tempos. Nos permite a produção de contraespaços e contratempos. Perceber a simultaneidade da existência em muitos lugares e tempos distintos (novamente, arquivo e porvir) nos liberta do peso de um único mundo, de uma única possibilidade de vida, de uma única forma de viver. Há de se espalhar existências para criarmos os contradiscursos que momentos radicais nos exigem: como viver sem angústia de que tudo pode acabar de uma hora para outra? Talvez a saída (utópica, porém concreta) seja colar com persistência os pedaços de durex, continuar a acreditar que nenhum vendaval desmonta sua estrutura feita de forma tenaz e experimental. Se viver é risco, resistir é um exercício cotidiano. É preciso assumir a responsabilidade de ser também parte de outras arquiteturas, colaborando com a construção ordinária do mundo – o seu e o de todos.

Viver em multiplicidade faz do corpo a própria utopia. Não há lugar melhor para além do espaço que ocupamos, nem há um tempo mais puro cuja nossa existência concreta corrompa. Se utopias nos servem para aspirar mundos perfeitos, sabemos cada dia mais que só o uso político de nossas ideias transforma as possibilidades de desejar um corpo mais livre, mais prazeroso, mais inventivo, mais pleno. São nossas maneiras de existir, nossas escolhas – eis aí a política – que abrem os espaços utópicos do próprio corpo em movimento. Criar, amplificar, inventar, experimentar, verbos cuja existências produzem resistência, fazem do mundo que se fecha horizonte em expansão. Contra qualquer violência, uma sólida arquitetura de atos, desejos e potências, sempre irá resistir.

Tal arquitetura é indestrutível, pois é feita em rede, se expandindo através do espaço (topos) e do tempo (cronos).

Somos simultaneidades em rede, singulares por sermos justamente coletivos. Comunidades de diferenças que precisam, mais do que nunca, fazer do aqui e agora o desejo radical de existência, resistência e expansão. Da multiplicidade vivemos.

EXISTENCE, RESISTANCE AND EXPANSION

Perhaps the first step before jumping over the abyss is to believe that there is not just one existence. Believing that we are multiple existences, that we exist simultaneously in multiple dimensions of life. I exist in the here-and-now while I am writing, I exist there, while you read, we exist when others remember us anywhere, we exist when someone evokes our name. Existing beyond the body that perishes as a radical thought about the transformation of everyone and of everyone’s world. Thinking that existence is not only resisting to deaths (the world ends every day) but also existing many times, re-existing daily, as if we could re-found ourselves time and time again. By turning life into a multiplicity, utopia is made at every gesture, every mark, every trace, every saying, like a sound that resonates forever. Utopia, here, is what everyone does with their own lives. Ways of existing.

Let us imagine that each of our actions is like a piece of adhesive tape. Gradually, without realising it, we stick one piece onto the other, without knowing exactly the shape that this practice will take as the days go by. Without previous controls, but without abandoning some planning – existing, every day – we begin to create a kind of structure whose parts are fragile but whose whole becomes unexpectedly strong. Everyday actions weave a network of gestures, conversations, works, affections, victories and defeats, while we continue doubling the bet, even if everything indicates an end of line. Existence, at some point, becomes this cohesive adhesive tape structure, immense, dense, a fabric of minimums that produces an architecture of maximums. We live inside and outside our own architecture, we inhabit this utopia – living is risky – and we go on with the collective construction of ourselves. This construction happens when we understand that we are only singular when we articulate ourselves with different worlds. Brick by brick, tape by tape, lives among lives, we build an abode for our multiple existences – and for all other existences that pass through us.

There is nothing out of here, out of this life, that produces utopias. The desire for other liberating realities, for other times of redemption, must be aspired in order for us to understand that we need to activate them now. Everything that flows over this existence returns as a motor for overcoming what happens to us. If the silicon machine world consumes our vision, we also turn it into a transgressive asset in the production of new meanings. Virtual realities create one more space to exist in an expanded state, to found other existences, to reinvent the world through the machine. Diving into brain waves, traveling through our synapses, turning the body into a beginning, not an end.

Going beyond the exhausted carcass and of the eyes overwhelmed by images and producing an inside of the inside. Digging outwards, turning the radical displacement of the spaces into a compass for getting lost in new seas – of past, present and future. Existing on multiple fronts is simultaneously being archive and invention. Being virtual and being historical, being here and in all possible places one can possibly imagine. Moving through multiple bodies to understand that utopia is not escaping what surrounds us, but radicalising today’s hunger.

Thus, multiplying existences, strengthening bonds by expanding oneself through every connection that is created, absorbing the contemporary time and space to go beyond them, are gestures whose result make us go through any end of times. It allows us to produce counter-spaces and counter-times.

Perceiving the simultaneity of existence in many different places and times (again, archive and future) frees us from the weight of a single world, of a single way of living. We need to spread existences around to create the counter-discourses that radical moments demand: how to live without fearing that everything can abruptly end? Perhaps the (utopian but concrete) way out is to persistently stick the pieces of adhesive tape together, to go on believing that no storm will dismantle its structure made in a tenacious and experimental way. If living is risky, resisting is an everyday practice. One must take responsi-

bility and be also part of other architectures, collaborating with the ordinary construction of the world – one’s own and everyone else’s.

Living in multiplicity makes the body itself a utopia. There is no better place other than the space we occupy, nor is there a purer time that can be corrupted by our concrete existence. If utopias serve us to aspire to perfect worlds, we are increasingly aware that only the political use of our ideas transforms the possibilities of desiring a freer, more pleasurable, more inventive and fuller body. Our ways of existing, our choices – hence politics – are what opens the utopian spaces of the moving body itself. Creating, amplifying, inventing, experimenting, verbs whose existence produces resistance, turns the world that closes itself into an expanding horizon.

Against any violence, a solid architecture of acts, desires, powers, will always resist. Such an architecture is indestructible because it is made in a network, expanding through space (topos) and time (chronos).

We are networked simultaneities, singular because we are collective. Communities of differences that need, more than ever, to turn the here-and-now into a radical desire for existence, resistance and expansion.

Multiplicity is life.

Tape é uma escultura colossal feita de fita adesiva. Sua construção é um processo de cocriação do Numen feito a muitas mãos com uma equipe de quinze voluntários. A obra adquire sua forma final graças a um esforço coletivo onde todos trabalham juntos, sem nunca largar a mão de ninguém.

Tape is colossal sculpture made of adhesive tape. It’s building is a process of co-creation between Numen and a team of fifteen volunteers. It aquires its final form thanks to many hands working together wihout ever letting go.

Partindo da provocação inicial de ocupar a grande vitrine do pátio do Centro Cultural Oi Futuro, as ações no pátio foram elaboradas no espaço de tempo de três semanas, reinventando-se à medida que surgiam novas restrições impostas pelo embate entre o Oi Futuro e seu novo vizinho: um grande empreendimento imobiliário com conclusão prevista para 2021.

As ações foram concebidas e apresentadas numa velocidade frenética típica dos processos nos quais o trabalho de arte é condicionado por “forças maiores”. A cada dia uma nova realidade foi imaginada, reagindo aos empecilhos institucionais, jurídicos, orçamentários e de cronograma. Para cada projeto, uma nova onda de questões: a fragilidade do processo artístico frente à força do capital; a impotência das instituições culturais face à especulação imobiliária; a ambiguidade entre função simbólica e função prática nos trabalhos de arte e arquitetura; a ignorância histórica que nos faz enterrar rios; as ressacas na praia do Flamengo, entre outros. Realidade, ficção, passado e presente se confundem, tecendo uma trama de ações que, juntas, constituem uma narrativa própria para a história desse embate.

Pedro Varella é arquiteto e artista. É sócio fundador do coletivo gru.a (grupo de arquitetos) e coautor do livro Rio metropolitano: guia para uma arquitetura, publicado em 2013. Em 2015 venceu o prêmio de arquitetura do Instituto Tomie Othake AkzoNobel com o projeto Cota 10.

ACTIONS IN THE PATIO From the challenge of occupying the large patio window at the Oi Futuro Cultural Centre, actions in the patio were created in three weeks and reinvented whenever new restrictions arose from the clash between Oi Futuro and its new neighbour: a major real estate project that will be finished by 2021.

The actions were conceived and presented at a frenetic speed, typical of processes in which a work of art is conditioned by “greater forces.” Every day a new reality was imagined, responding to institutional, legal, budgetary and schedule obstacles. For each project, a new torrent of issues: the fragility of the artistic process when faced with the power of capital; the powerlessness of cultural institutions against real estate speculation; the ambiguity between symbolic and practical function in works of art and in architectural projects; the historical ignorance that makes us bury entire rivers; the undertows of the Flamengo beach, among other issues. Reality, fiction, past and present are all entwined, weaving a web of actions that together form a conflictual story.

Pedro Varella is an architect and an artist. He is a founding partner of the collective gru.a (grupo de arquitetos) and the co-author of the book Rio metropolitano: guia para uma arquitetura, published in 2013. He won the 2015 Instituto Tomie Ohtake AkzoNobel Award with the project Cota 10.

Iceberg é um projeto multidisciplinar composto de um livro e uma exposição, com realidades AR e VR, artes gráficas e uma instalação interativa.

O iceberg é uma metáfora do embate do artista, entre vida e obra. Só vislumbramos um pequeno pedaço do iceberg. Da mesma forma acessamos apenas uma pequena parte de nossa consciência.

Em seu manifesto Iceberg Fernando afirma: “Nunca vi um iceberg, embora seja um”.

Iceberg is a multidiscplinary project that includes a book and un exhibition composed of VR and AR realities, graphic arts and an interactive installation.

The iceberg is a metaphor of the artist’s clash, between his life and his work. We only envision a small portion of the iceberg. In the same way, we only access a small part of our conscience.

In his Iceberg manifesto Fernando states: I have never seen an Iceberg, though I am one. “

No século XIX, os inventores performavam falas para platéias para explicar suas invenções. Em suas falas, Benedetti faz o mesmo expondo a vida e obra destes dois grandes homens.

O RITUAL DE NIBLOCK

A obra de Niblock é como um trem que avança sobre dois trilhos, o visual e o sonoro, ambos sempre juntos, criando uma experiência física, contínua, imponente, imensa, envolvente e hipnótica.

John F. Niblock trabalhava como operador de máquinas na fábrica da General Motors em Anderson, Indiana, e nos finais de semana assombrava as sessões dos antigos cinemas Paramount e Estate em Anderson, acompanhando com seu xilofone e percussão os clássicos do cinema mudo do início do século XX. Earl Niblock, seu filho, mais tarde também trabalhou na GM como engenheiro de fábrica. Como seu pai, ele também tocava piano, mesmo que fosse apenas um amador. Naqueles anos, Star Dust de Hoagy Camichael era um clássico popular. Alguns anos depois, em 1933, nasce Phill Niblock. Sua mãe, Thelma Sophie Smith, era dona de casa e apaixonada por numerologia. Earl, seu pai, seguia trabalhando na fábrica da GM. Na sua infância, Phill Niblock passava seu tempo entra a fábrica da General Motors, onde trabalhou em alguns verões, e os cinemas de Anderson. Na sua adolescência, era apaixonado por romances de mistério e faroeste, e descobre Dashiell Hammett, sua primeira grande influência, criando as bases para seu trabalho posterior, segundo ele. “A maneira como Hammett destilava suas ideias e ia direto ao ponto com suas frases, sem rodeios ou enfeites” 1. Mais tarde, começa a frequentar a Joe’s Record Shop, a loja de discos de Joe Pike, que familiarizou Niblock ao jazz. Pouco a pouco conhece a música de Duke Ellington, e assiste em 1948 a um concerto de Ellington no cinema Paramount em Anderson. Naquela época, Phill passava suas noites ouvindo às estações de rádio de Nova York com um rádio transistorizado que havia preparado para ouvir programas que atravessavam milhares de quilômetros até chegar em Indiana. Phill ficava acordado até tarde junto ao seu rádio e ouvia pela primeira vez shows de jazz na 52nd Street em lugares como Birdland, Royal Roost e músicos como Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie e seu adorado Duke Ellington. Em alguma dessas sessões, o jovem Phill começou a pensar em ir a Nova York, onde estavam seus heróis.

Em 1956, recém-graduado em economia, e sabendo que seria recrutado pelo exército, ele decide alistar-se voluntariamente, e é destinado à escola de Rádio Operadores em Fort Knox, onde, entre outras coisas, aprende o código Morse. Mais tarde, o enviam ao Alabama, onde comanda um regimento, já que era o único com alguma formação. Assim consegue permissões para viajar para a Europa. Aos 24 anos visita Paris, Frankfurt, Munique e Bruxelas. Em uma dessas viagens, Phill recorda ter visitado o Pavilhão Philips que Le Corbusier e Iannis Xenakis construíram na exposição universal de Bruxelas em 1958. Com música de Edgar Varèse e seu Poeme Electronique, o pavilhão é um mito da modernidade na segunda metade do século, ainda hoje considerado um ponto de referência para o desenvolvimento da música experimental e da composição no século XX. Phill se lembra de vagar pelos Parabolóides e Hiperbólicos do pavilhão escutando os sons espacializados de Varèse, e recorda o quanto isso o impressionou aos 25 anos de idade. Não há dúvida de que o trabalho de Varèse é importante, de uma forma ou de outra, para compreendermos o trabalho de Niblock.

Após sua passagem pela Europa, decide mudar-se para Nova York.

Em 1958, aterriza em Nova York e mora em uma residência na 49 th Street para estudos bíblicos, onde paga um aluguel irrisório e começa a frequentar concertos de Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bud Powell, Ben Webster e John Coltrane nos clubes mais importantes da época, como o Five Spot e o Half Note. Nos anos 60 tem vários empregos, como vendedor de enciclopédias e vendendo fundos de investimento no Empire State Building, onde entra em contato com Jerome Manill, que vendia equipamentos audiovisuais Hi-Fi. Esse é o primeiro contato que Phill tem com o universo audiovisual. Também conhece Bill Hollinger, que o contrata para trabalhar em sua empresa, Programme Teaching Aids, dedicada à venda de máquinas educativas. Trabalha também com BF Skinner e é nesse momento que começa a tirar fotos desses equipamentos para os catálogos da empresa. Em 1960 compra uma Beseler Topcon e começa a tirar fotos em suas visitas a clubes de jazz. Suas primeiras fotos foram de Ben Webster no Harlem. Seu chefe, Hollinger, dá a ele um quarto escuro e assim Niblock começa a trabalhar como fotógrafo profissional, fotografando seus heróis: Ben Webster, Duke Ellington Band, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldrige, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman e Rem Ramirez.

Logo consegue fotografar algumas sessões de gravação no famoso estúdio Columbia, onde poucos anos antes Miles Davis havia gravado seus clássicos, e onde Phill fotografa a última sessão de Ellington em 1961.

Nesse período, começa também a assistir concertos de música contemporânea. Niblock menciona especialmente um concerto que o marcou muito. Organizado por Max Polikoff em sua série Music in our Time no espaço YMHA da 92nd Street. No dia em que Morton Feldman estreava sua composição Durations, Niblock teve uma revelação: a música pode ser um fluxo contínuo, sem ritmo, sem melodia, com sons longos que nos transportam. Com essa experiência, Niblock sentiu que podia desenvolver essa ideia, que tinha essa liberdade de movimento e que Feldman, com sua composição, lhe dera permissão, liberdade e coragem para iniciar sua própria aventura.

Nos anos 60, Phill vai a clubes, exposições, concertos de música contemporânea, e mantém sua atividade como fotógrafo da cena de jazz novaiorquina. Por volta de 1965, começa a ter contato com a cena do Judson Dance Theater que entre 1962 e 1964 realiza na Memorial Judson Church, em Greenwich Village, uma série de eventos que marcam fortemente a cena artística da cidade naquele período, com artistas como Steven Paxton, Fred Herko, David Gordon, Yvonne Rainer, Lucinda Childs, Meredith Monk e Elaine Summers, com quem Phill teria mais contato, e com quem colaboraria em filmes e com quem fundaria mais tarde a Experimental Intermedia. Niblock colabora também com Yvonne Rainer, criando peças e documentando alguns de seus eventos. O intercâmbio com essa cena de coreógrafos, músicos e artistas da Judson é muito importante para o desenvolvimento de Niblock em um aspecto puramente coreográfico e como compositor.

Nesse período, Yvonne Rainer busca a essência da dança e do movimento, e começa a trabalhar com pessoas das ruas sem experiência prévia de dança, bailarinos não profissionais, nos quais busca o movimento natural e gestos essenciais, ideias inspiradas por Taylor e Laban, e que 100

encontram em Nova York um terreno muito fértil para experimentação.

As teorias de Rainer influenciam toda uma geração em Nova York, incluindo Niblock, que alguns anos mais tarde realiza sua obra prima, The Movement of People Working, em uma busca ainda mais radical por um corpo cada vez mais distante do processo artístico.

Outro evento que o marcou nesse período foi o encontro com o fotógrafo-cineasta Ralph Steiner, seu vizinho na 33rd Street, com quem mantém uma relação de intercâmbio profissional. Steiner é uma figura chave para entender o cinema experimental americano. Ele exemplifica a divisão entre o cinema documental clássico, Pare Lorentz, Paul Strand, e o trabalho da nova geração, como Stan Brakhage, Nathaniel Dorsky e Peter Hutton. Seu contato com Steiner é o ponto de referência essencial para compreendermos o trabalho de Niblock.

Em 1966 realiza sua primeira exposição na Underground, uma galeria de fotografia na 10th Street com sua última série em preto e branco, realizada entre 1960 e 1966. Niblock compra então sua primeira Bolex do dono da galeria e assim começa a trabalhar com ela realizando seus primeiros filmes, em um período muito produtivo em que Niblock se concentrou na ideia de realizar um filme por dia. Criou uma série de filmes que logo chamou de 6 Films, entre os quais está Morning (196669), em colaboração com Jean Claude Von Ittalie, seguido por peças clássicas, como Magic Sun (1966-69), um dos documentos mais radicais e interessantes jamais filmados sobre Sun Ra, com imagens feitas no 101

apartamento de Sun Ra na Segunda Avenida, usando uma lâmpada e refletor caseiro forrado com papel alumínio, durante em uma noite, e 200 pés de um filme de alta sensibilidade e forte contraste em preto e branco (Kodak 7203 stock Sander Black and White), material normalmente utilizado para créditos de filmes e que quando revelado em um banho de alta sensibilidade, dá a sensação de ter sido filmado em Saturno... Sun Ra e sua Arkestra improvisaram por algumas horas enquanto Phill os filmava.

Mais tarde, Phill escolheu faixas da discografia de Sun Ra para realizar a montagem final.

Alguns meses mais tarde, quando Niblock mostrou o filme a Sun Ra, ele comentou: “Você é mais louco do que eu” 2. Uma espécie de bênção que previa o quão visionário Niblock havia sido com seu filme.

Em 1966, também realiza um retrato de seu amigo Max Neuhaus, Max, com música do próprio Neuhaus, seguido pelos retratos do pintor Raúl Middelman, e da bailarina e coreógrafa Ann Danoff, Annie (1968), bem como um filme anômalo na carreira de Niblock, chamado Dog Track (1969) no qual Phill apresenta um texto de ficção de Bárbara Porte, retratando sua relação com um cão e usando imagens de experimentos cinematográficos daquele período.

O ano de 1968 foi importante para Niblock. Em abril ele decide alugar um loft no SOHO. Nesse período, o bairro, que ainda não era conhecido por esse nome, era um deserto de espaços industriais que, após a crise dos anos 50, estavam abandonados e começavam a ser transformados em estúdios. Assim começava um dos primeiros casos de gentrificação urbana, e ali nasce o que se tornaria a cena Downtown, de artistas que marcaram a cena artística de Nova York, como Trisha Brown, Gordon Matta-Clark, Laurie Anderson, Donal Judd, etc., muitos dos quais abriram espaços de arte, restaurantes e galerias.

Naquele período, o loft de Niblock ficava entre as ruas Grand e Centre, uma zona ainda inexplorada por artistas. Mas logo logo começam a chegar ilustres vizinhos na região.

The Kitchen era o o lugar onde as coisas aconteciam, então administrado por Stella e Woody Vasulka. Herman Nitsch apresentou no local o seu novo trabalho, e o sangue que usou na sua performance impregnou o espaço, impossibilitando a realização de um concerto que Niblock havia planejado. Para não precisar cancelar o evento, Phill decidiu realizá-lo em seu loft. Conta a lenda que esse foi o primeiro de muitos concertos realizado lá. Mais de 800 artistas já passaram pelo loft e suas séries se tornaram obrigatórias na cena internacional de música experimental.

Nesse mesmo período, Phill realizou seu primeiro grande evento na Judson Memorial Church, definindo-o como teatro não-verbal com dança, música e filme no qual apresentou pela primeira vez ENVIRONMENTS (1968). A série mantém uma forte relação com a natureza e é influenciada pelo trabalho de Edgard Weston e Ralph Steiner, com imagens da natureza ou de paisagens filmadas durante viagens de moto no estado de Nova York. Nesse período, Phill realiza e filma trabalhos que estão sendo redescobertos apenas hoje, mais de 40 anos depois, apresentados em 2013 na retrospectiva com curadoria de Mathieu Copeland em Lausanne e logo seguido por um DVD de THIR (montagem de um filme de 43 minutos com material filmado em Environments 3 e 103

que publicado por Von Archives). THIR é um filme importante em sua carreira. Filmado perto das montanhas de Adirondack no norte do estado de Nova York, com uma Beaulieu 16mm, mostra imagens captadas com uma lente Zoom em dez lugares diferentes e em uma área de 100 polegadas, 250 cm2 de natureza quase microscópica de beleza sublime, gotas de água deslizando por folhas, abelhas coletando o néctar de flores desconhecidas, minúsculos suspiros de gelo que parecem dançar ao ritmo da música, reflexos na água que se tornam tipografias e símbolos de uma linguagem a ser decifrada. THIR é sem dúvida um dos trabalhos mais introspectivos de Niblock e onde a natureza tem protagonismo mais feroz, revelando a influência de Weston e Steiner e do movimento de fotógrafos americanos que ao longo da segunda metade do século trabalham para redescobrir a paisagem americana, novas vozes que conseguem reapaziguar e rever sua relação com a natureza.

Porém, um dos pontos mais importantes daquele evento de 1968 na Judson Church é que Phill decide finalmente criar sua própria música para suas imagens. Ele nos conta que a razão pela qual ele decidiu começar a compor foi sua difícil colaboração com Max Neuhaus, com quem estava criando as músicas para o primeiro evento da série e com quem teve problemas ao tentar realizar o que tinha em mente. Dessa frustração surge Niblock como compositor. Ele reconhece que Neuhaus é a razão pela qual começa a compor, a ideia de que ele mesmo podia criar suas próprias composições. Do mesmo modo com que começou a fotografar, Phill decide que vai controlar todo o processo criativo sem recorrer a colaborações cansativas.

No primeiro evento da série Environments, Niblock apresenta uma série de filmes com coreografias improvisadas de várias bailarinas: Ann Danoff, Barbara Lloyd (Dily) e Vernita Nemec, além de uma abertura com Meredith Monk estreando sua primeira peça musical, Organ for Judson Church, uma composição em que suas ideias começam a convergir para o que chama de sua música, suas ideias. Com este tema Niblock finalmente consegue encontrar algo pessoal, utilizando sua paixão por microtons e harmônicos...

Para compor a peça, utilizou a órgão da Judson Church para a criar os sobretons e os microtons com diferentes registros do órgão que estavam desafinados. Ele os gravou com seu Uher em duas faixas, e em seguida usou a gravação no concerto com Meredith Monk, que tocava o início da peça ao órgão e, logo que a gravação tomava conta, Monk voltava para a plateia. A segunda incluia música de Max Neuhaus, imagens de Niblock e improvisação de dança. Esse pode ser considerado o primeiro evento intermedia de Niblock. Em grande sintonia com seu tempo e com o contexto onde foi apresentado.

A série continua com CROSS COUNTRY / ENVIRONMENTS II (1970), na qual Niblock apresenta seu filme Cross Country, realizado em uma viagem de sete semanas pelos Estados Unidos, em que foi de Nova York a Seattle, da costa oeste a San Diego, e de volta a Nova York passando pelo Colorado e Kansas. Foram mais de 20.000 km capturados em um rolo de 50 minutos que na apresentação se alterna com slides tirados na mesma viagem, alternando imagens em movimento com imagens fixas.

Um ano depois, 100 MILE RADIUS/ENVIRONMENTS III (1971) é apresentado no Whitney Museum; com três enormes telas com projeções de imagens em 16mm filmadas em um raio de 100 milhas ao redor de Clinton, NY, os filmes são cortados e seguidos por slides tirados no mesmo contexto.

TEN HUNDRED INCH RADII/ENVIRONMENTS IV (1972) foi apresentado no Everson Museum of Art de Siracusa. Três projeções em 16mm foram realizadas nas montanhas de Adirondack e intercaladas com slides e improvisações coreográficas de bailarinas, incluindo Ann Danoff e Barbara Lloyd.

Sua série Environments sem dúvida estabeleceu as bases de seu trabalho, que de certa forma é o início de uma viagem que o levou a tornar-se sem dúvida o primeiro artista que trabalha com sons e imagens da maneira tão compacta. Mesmo que colaborações entre músicos, artistas, coreógrafos e cineastas fossem muito comuns naquela época, Niblock parece se tornar mais independente e sua voz de cineasta começa a se misturar com sua voz de compositor. Essas duas vozes levaram alguns anos para se tornar mais e mais compactas.

De certa forma, sempre tive a sensação de que a obra de Niblock é como um trem que avança sobre dois trilhos, o visual e o sonoro, ambos sempre juntos, criando uma experiência física, contínua, imponente, imensa, envolvente e hipnótica.

O período que começa depois de Environments em 1972-75 levará Phill a se afastar cada vez mais das colaborações e a começar a pensar na ideia de viajar para capturar imagens de pessoas trabalhando, uma maior radicalização das teorias de Rainer, buscando uma separação completa entre criador e sujeito e usando as imagens como testemunho único dessa criação, Niblock realiza uma viagem a algumas regiões de Nova York em busca desses gestos essenciais, talvez em busca de suas memórias de infância quando ele visitava seu pai na fábrica da General Motors em Anderson. Essas primeiras imagens, sem um fim narrativo, mas puramente contemplativo, e buscando afastar-se do que chama de artificialidade da dança, Niblock começa a apresentar essas imagens como acompanhamento para seus concertos, que começam a ser mais e mais reduzidos em termos de produção, afastando-se das grandes produções com coreógrafos, bailarinos e músicos. Isso permite que ele tenha total independência e reduz sua produção ao mínimo, o que também lhe permite viajar mais. Nesse período, trabalha como professor de fotografia e cinema em Staten Island e assim consegue financiar parte de suas viagens de verão, ou períodos sabáticos. Assim começa uma série de viagens que se estenderam de 1972 a 1991, a países como o México (73-74-75), Peru, Brasil (83-84), África do Sul, Canadá, China (86-87-88), Portugal, Hungria, Sumatra (1990), e que deram origem à sua obra prima, The Movement of People Working. Nessas viagens em que Phill filma pessoas trabalhando, sua máxima estética é registrar pessoas em movimento. Ele não está interessado nas pessoas em si, mas no puro ato do movimento de trabalho. Nesse ponto, afasta-se do documentário clássico onde há uma necessidade narrativa de conhecer esses personagens e de entrar em 106

contato com eles. O trabalho de Niblock é não-narrativo e sem edição. A montagem ocorre no momento da filmagem. Ele seleciona o ângulo e a distância da melhor maneira possível, aproximando a câmera até o ponto exato e realizando tomadas de 2 a 3 minutos de duração com um filme de 16mm (Kodak). Essas tomadas criam seu próprio ritmo abstrato que se relaciona com a música na qual as estruturas não são sincronizadas. A imagem é independente mas complementa suas composições. É então que Phill começa a realizar o que chama de evento intermedia, concertos nos quais apresenta seus filmes em várias telas, com suas composições que vão se tornando cada vez mais complexas e com mais projeções.

Não há razão política por trás dessa seleção, e embora a seleção desses locais já seja uma decisão política, o objetivo de Niblock nunca foi político. Seu trabalho é puramente estrutural, buscando desconstruir o ato do trabalho e reorganizar um corpo intermídia. Embora Niblock tenha uma sensibilidade cinematográfica, seu objetivo nunca o foi. Suas imagens equivalem à música, são a própria música. Ele não consegue vê-las como independentes. Assim compreendemos essa interrelação que ocorreu poucas vezes na cena artística da nova sensibilidade que nasce e se desenvolve a partir de John Cage em Nova York.

Phill talvez seja o primeiro artista intermídia, o primeiro verdadeiramente audiovisual. A imagem é relativa ao som e o som é relativo à imagem, como nunca antes havia ocorrido nas mãos de um criador.

Embora alguns cineastas tenham sido músicos, como no caso de Michael Snow, por exemplo, esses formações nunca foram intrínsecas ou se retroalimentaram como no caso de Niblock, Nam June Paik ou Yoko Ono nos anos 60 e também dos precursores da música visual e filmes sonoros dos anos 20, como Viking Eggeling, Oscar Fishinger ou Walter Ruttmann. Esses casos nunca foram tão independentes e foram sempre fruto de colaborações com outros músicos e mais relacionado à arte abstrata. Nesse sentido Niblock é estilisticamente único e, em um sentido puramente de conteúdo, seu trabalho é incomparável, surgindo como uma voz independente. Esse é um lado mais abstrato de Niblock que apenas encontra paralelo em Magic Sun, trabalho que realizou em 1968 sobre Sun Ra. Entre 1972 e 2013, Niblock foi onipresente na cena internacional, apresentando seu trabalho em Live Media em concertos ao redor do mundo. Embora esses sejam seus trabalhos mais conhecidos mundialmente, esse artigo não irá se aprofundar mais sobre eles.

THE NIBLOCK RITUAL

Niblock’s work is like a train that advances safely on two rails, image and sound, the two always side by side, creating a physical, continuous, imposing, immense, hypnotic and engaging experience.

John F. Niblock worked as a machine operator at the General Motors factory in Anderson, Indiana, and during the weekends he loomed the sessions of the old Paramount and Estate movie theatres, accompanying with his xylophone and percussion the classic silent movies of the early 20th century. His son Earl Niblock also worked at GM later as a floor engineer, like his father. He was also an amateur pianist. In those years, Star Dust, by Hoagy Carmichael was a popular classic. A few years later, in 1933, Phill Niblock was born. His mother, Thelma Sophie Smith was a housewife and passionate about numerology and Earl, his father, kept working at GM. During his childhood, Phill Niblock spent his time between the General Motors factory, where he worked in a few summer jobs, and the movie theatres in Anderson. In his teens he was very fond of mystery and western novels, and got in acquainted with the work of Dashiell Hammett, who, according to him, became his first great influence and laid the foundations for his later work, because of “the way Hammett distilled his ideas and wrote sentences that went straight to the point with no adornments or digressions.” Later, he started to frequent Joe’s Record Shop, a music shop owned by Joe Pike, who introduced Niblock to jazz music. Little by little, he came into contact with the music of Duke Ellington, and attended, in 1948, Ellington’s first concert at the Paramount in Anderson. At that time, Phill spent his nights listening to radio stations from New York with a transistor radio he had managed to prepare to listen to night programmes that crossed thousands of kilometres before reaching Indiana. Phill stayed up late at night to listen for the first time to the sounds coming from jazz venues on 52nd Street, places like Birdland, Royal Roost, people such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and his beloved Duke Ellington. In some of those sessions the young Phill began to think about travelling to New York, where all his heroes lived.

In 1956, right after receiving a degree in economics, and knowing that he had to get into the army, he decided to enrol voluntarily. He was sent to Fort Knox to the radio operators school where, among other things, he was taught the Morse Code. Later he was assigned a battalion in Alabama, where he commanded a regiment, since he was the only one who had an education. In this way, he was able to get permits and travel to Europe when he was 24, visiting Paris, Frankfurt, Munich and Brussels. During those trips, Phill recalls especially having visited the Phillips Pavilion built by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis at the Brussels World’s Fair in 1958. With Edgar Varèse’s Poeme Electronique, the pavilion became a symbol of modernity in 136

the second half of the century, and is still regarded as a point of reference for the development of experimental music and composition of the 20th century. Phill remembers wandering through the hyperbolic paraboloids while listening to Varèse’s spatialised sounds, and remembers how impressed he was at 25 years of age. Varèse’s work is no doubt important in one way or another to understand Niblock’s work and perhaps this encounter left a lasting impression on him.

After his stay in Europe, he decided to move to New York. In 1958, he landed in the city and lived in a Bible studies residence on 49th Street where he payed very low rent and started to attend concerts by Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bud Powell, Ben Webster, John Coltrane, at some of the most important clubs of that period, like the Five Spot or the Half Note. During the 1960s, he had many different jobs selling encyclopedias, and then selling investment funds in the Empire State Building, where he came in contact with Jerome Manill, who sold Hi-Fi audiovisual equipment. That was Phill’s first contact with the audiovisual universe. He then met Bill Hollinger, who hired him to work in his company, Programme Teaching Aids, which sold educational machines. He also worked with BF Skinner and started to take photographs of the machines for the company catalogues. In 1960, he bought a Beseler Topcon and started taking pictures in jazz clubs. His first photographs were of Ben Webster in Harlem.

His boss, Hollinger, gave him a dark room so he began to work as a professional photographer taking pictures of his heroes: Ben Webster, the Duke Ellington Band, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldrige, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman and Rem Ramirez.

He soon managed to take pictures of some recording sessions in the famous Columbia studio, where a few years earlier Miles Davis had recorded his classics, and where Phill photographed Ellington’s last session in 1961.

During this period he also began to attend concerts of contemporary classical music. Niblock especially mentions a concert that deeply impressed him; organised by Max Polikoff in his series, Music in our Time, held in the YMHA space on 92nd Street, when Morton Feldman presented Durations for first time. For Niblock, it was a revelation of how music can be a continuous flow, with no melody and long sustained frequencies. Niblock felt he could further develop that idea, that there was a freedom of movement and that Feldman, with his composition, had given him permission, freedom and courage to start his own adventure.

In the 1960s, Phill visited clubs, exhibitions and concerts of contemporary classical music, and maintained his activity as a photographer of the New York Jazz scene. Around 1965, he came in contact with the Judson Dance Theater, which organised a series of events that strongly marked the New York scene between 1962 and 1964, the Judson Church in Greenwich. The events had the participation of people such as Steven Paxton, Fred Herko, David Gordon, Yvonne Rainer, Lucinda Childs, Meredith Monk, and Elaine Summers, with whom Phill became well acquainted, and develop some film collaborations, later founding Experimental Intermedia. Niblock also collaborated with Yvonne Rainer, creating pieces and documenting some of her events. This exchange with choreographers, musicians and artists from the Judson Dance Theater was very important for Niblock’s development in a purely choreographic aspect and as a composer.

In that period, Yvonne Rainer was seeking the essence of dance, of movement, and began to work with people from the street with no previous experience in dance, non-professional dancers, seeking in them natural movements and essential gestures, ideas that came from Taylor and Laban, and that found in New York a very good ground for experimentation. Rainer’s theories in a way influenced an entire generation in New York, among which was Niblock, who surely began a few years later his masterpiece The Movement of People Working, in an even more radical search of a body increasingly detached from the artistic process.

Another event that marked him in that period was his contact with the photographer and filmmaker Ralph Steiner, his neighbour on 33rd Street. Steiner is a key figure to understand American experimental cinema, exemplifying the split between classic documentary film, Pare Lorentz, Paul Strand, and the work of the new generation, such as Stan Brakhage, Nathaniel Dorsky and Peter Hutton. Niblock’s relationship with Steiner is essential to understad his work.

In 1966, Niblock had his first exhibition at the Underground Gallery, a photography gallery on 10th Street. He showed his photographic work from 1960 to 1966, the black and white series. That was the last time he developed black-and-white photos. Niblock bought his first Bolex from the gallery owner and so he began to make his first films, during a very productive period in which he had the idea of shooting one film per day.

He made a film series he later called 6 Films, which includes Morning (1966-69), a collaboration with Jean Claude Von Ittalie and now-classic works such as Magic Sun* (1966-69), one of the most radical and interesting documents ever filmed about Sun Ra, shot in Sun Ra’s apartment on 2nd Avenue with a homemade lamp and reflector lined with aluminum foil, during one night, using 200 feet of a high sensitivity film stock and strong black and white contrast (Kodak 7203 stock Sander Black and white), normally used for credits and that when developed in a processing bath for highly sensitive film, gave the impression of having been filmed on Saturn… Sun Ra and his Arkestra improvised for a few hours while Phill operated the camera. Later, Phill chose tracks from Sun Ra’s discography for the final cut.

A few months later, when Niblock showed Sun Ra the film, he replied: “You are crazier than I am,” a kind of blessing, foreseeing how visionary Niblock’s film was.

In 1966, he also made a portrait of his friend Max Neuhaus; Max, with music by Neuhaus himself. The series includes the portraits of painter Raúl Middelman, and dancer and choreographer Ann Danoff, Annie (1968), as well as an anomalous film in Niblock’s career, Dog Track (1969), in which he presents a fictional text by Bárbara Porte describing her relationship with a dog, with images of her filmic deambulations during that period.

1968 was an important year for Niblock. In April he decided to rent a loft in the SOHO. In that period the SOHO was not yet known by that name and was an empty area full of industrial spaces that after the 1950s crisis were abandoned and started be used as artist’s studios. One of the first cases of urban centralisation began, and what was later to become the Downtown scene was born, with artists who marked the New York art scene, like Trisha Brown, Gordon Matta-Clark, Laurie Anderson, Donald Judd, etc., many of whom opened art spaces, restaurants and galleries.

In those times, Niblock’s loft was located between the Grand and Center streets, an area still unexplored by artists. Soon, illustrious neighbours began to move to places close to his studio.

In those years, The Kitchen was the place where everything happened. It was run by Stella and Woody Vasulka. Herman Nitsch was in New York and presented one of his new works there, and the blood he used for his performance made it impossible for Niblock to perform a concert he had organised. So, instead of cancelling the event, Phill decided to do it in his loft.

According to legend, that was the first concert he gave in his loft, and he has not stopped doing that every since. More than 800 artists have performed there and his events have become inevitable gatherings for International Experimental Music.

During that same period, Phill organised his first great event at the Judson Memorial Church, defined by Niblock as non-verbal theatre with dance, music and film where he presented for the first time a series he called ENVIRONMENTS (1968). The series has a strong connection with nature. It is influenced by the work of Edgard Weston and Ralph Steiner, with images of nature or landscapes that Niblock captured during his motorcycle trips through New York. During the same period, Phill made works that only now, 40 years later, are being rediscovered, presented in 2013 in a retrospective exhibition curated by Mathieu Copeland in Lausanne. It will be followed by a DVD edition of THIR (a 43-minute film with material shot during Environments 3 released by Von Archives) THIR is an important film in his career, shot near the Adirondack mountains in the north of the state of New York. Niblock set out to film with his Beaulieu 16mm movie camera the images he was able to capture with a Zoom lens in ten different places, and in an area of 100 inches (250 cm). Almost microscopic squares of sublime beauty, water drops flowing down leaves, bees sucking nectar from unknown flowers, tiny sighs of ice that seem to dance to the rhythm of the music, reflections in water that become typographies and symbols of a not-yet deciphered language.

THIR is undoubtedly one of Niblock’s most introspective works, and where nature has the fiercest protagonism. In it, we see influences from Weston and Steiner and of the whole movement of American photographers that throughout the second half of the 20th century worked to rediscover the American landscape.

New voices that are able to reappease and review their relationship with nature.

But one of the most important points of the 1968 event at Judson Church was that Phill decided to finally create his own music for his images. He tells us that the reason he decided to start composing was his difficult collaboration with Max Neuhaus, which whom he had been creating music for the first event of the series, and with whom he seems to have had problems realising what he had in mind. From that frustration Niblock-as-a-composer is born. He recognises that Neuhaus is the reason for his beginning to compose, the idea that he could create his own compositions in the same way he began to take photographs. He decided he would control the entire creative process without having to resort to strenuous collaborations.

In the first event of the Environments series he presented some of his films, with improvised choreographies by several dancers: Ann Danoff, Barbara Lloyd (Dily) and Vernita Nemec, plus an opening with Meredith Monk performing Niblock’s Organ for Judson Church, the first composition in which his 137

ideas start to converge towards what he calls his music, his ideas. Niblock finally managed to find something personal, related with his passion for microtones and overtones...

To compose his piece, he used the Judson Church organ to create the overtones and microtones with the use of organ stops that were out of tune. He recorded two tracks with his Uher, and then used the recording for the concert with Meredith Monk, who played the beginning of the piece on the same organ and soon the recording took over while Monk sat back in the audience. The second part, with music by Max Neuhaus, more images by Niblock and dance improvisations can be considered Niblock’s first intermedia event. Very consistent with his time and with the context where it was presented.

The series continues with CROSS COUNTRY/ENVIRONMENTS II (1970), in which Niblock presents his film Cross Country, made during a 7-week trip across the United States, from New York to Seattle, from the west coast to San Diego and then through Colorado and Kansas back to New York.

More than 20,000 km were captured in a 50-minute reel, alternating with slides taken on the same trip, a combination of moving and still images.

One year later, 100 MILE RADIUS/ENVIRONMENTS III (1971) was presented at the Whitney Museum, with three huge screens and projections of 16mm images shot within a radius of 100 miles from Clinton-NY, the films were cut and followed by slides, always taken in that same context.

TEN HUNDRED INCH RADII/ENVIRONMENTS IV (1972) was presented at the Everson Museum of Art de Syracuse, three projections of 16mm films shot in the Adirondack mountains, interspersed with slides and choreographic improvisations by dancers like Ann Danoff and Barbara Lloyd.

His series of environments undoubtedly laid the foundation for his work, and that in a way was the beginning of a journey that made him the first artist to work with sound and images in such a compact way. Despite the fact tht in that period collaborations between musicians, artists, choreographers and filmmakers were very common, Niblock seems to have become independent and his voice as a filmmaker began to merge with his voice as a composer, these two voices took a few years to become more and more compact.

In a way, I have always had the feeling that Niblock’s work is like a train that advances safely on two rails: image and sound.

The two always side by side, creating a physical, continuous, imposing, immense, hypnotic and engaging experience.

The period beginning after the Environments in 1972-75 led Phill to increasingly move away from collaborations. He began to think about travelling in order to capture images of people working. A further radicalisation of Rainer’s theories, seeking to totally separate creator and subject. Using images as the only testimony of his creation, Niblock made a trip to some areas in New York in search of that essential gestuality, perhaps in search of those childhood memories where he visited his father in the General Motors factory in Anderson. These first images are purely contemplative, with no narrative intentions.

With them, Niblock saught to move away from what he calls the artificiality of dance, beginning to present them as accompaniment for his concerts, whose production was more and more reduced, avoiding big productions with choreographers, dancers and musicians. That gave him total independence 138

and reduced his production to a minimum, allowing him to be more independent and travel more often. During that period he worked as a photography and cinema teacher on Staten Island.

This way he managed to finance part of his trips, or sabbaticals, during the summer months. Thus began a series of trips from 1972 to 1991, in countries such as Mexico (1973, 1974, 1975), Peru, Brazil (1983, 1984), South Africa, Canada, China (1986, 1987, 1988) Portugal, Hungary, Sumatra (1990)… That is how he began the masterpiece for which he will be remembered: The Movement of People Working. In those trips, Phill filmed people working. His aesthetic principle was to find and capture images of people in motion. He was not interested in those people per se, but only as a pure act of work movement. Thus, he avoided the classic documentary where there is the narrative need of knowing the characters or getting in contact with them.

Niblock’s work is not narrative. The editing is done on camera: he chooses an angle and distance that will allow him to describe the movements in the best possible way, bringing the camera to the right position, and takes 2-to-3-minute shots with 16mm film stock (Kodak). The editing is done on camera and the rhythm is created by the takes. An abstract rhythm that is related to music whose structures are not well synchronised, and images are independent but complementary to the compositions. It was then that Phill started to perform what he would call intermedia events, concerts where he presents his films on several screens, together with his compositions, that become increasingly complex with more and more projections.

There is no political reason behind that choice, and although the choice of locations is already a political decision, Niblock never had a political agenda. His work is purely structural and, in that sense, seeks the deconstruction of the act of work and reorganisation of an intermedia body. Although Niblock has a filmic sensibility, he never had a cinematographic goal. His images serve music, they are music, he is unable to view them as independent. That is how we come to understand an interrelationship that has rarely occurred in the art scene and the new sensibility that emerged and developed from Cage onwards in New York.

Phill is perhaps the first intermedia artist, the first truly audiovisual one. Images are relative to sound, and sound is relative to images, as had never occurred before, although filmmakers have been musicians, like Michael Snow, for example, the two backgrounds have never been intrinsic. Or they feed back into one another as in the case of Nam June Paik or Yoko Ono, in the 1960s, and the precursors of visual music and sound films of the 1920s, such as Viking Eggeling, Oscar Fischinger or Walter Ruttmann, which were never really independent and always the result of collaborations with other musicians, in a field more strongly related to abstract art. In this sense, Niblock’s style and content are unique. His work is incomparable and emerges as an independent voice. In the period from 1971 to 1991, Phill released a series of albums that established him as a composer, although his position as a musician was that of a fugitive, since he never studied music and never played any instrument.

But his knowledge of the sonic bases and appreciation for pure sound and its phenomenology is in a way exemplary and his ideas in relation to drones, overtones and the creation of microtones is fundamental to understand the development of this kind of music, and also his images. Niblock defines his music as

“microtonal in essence, with tones layered very close to each other and played simultaneously, creating fields and patterns for overtones.”

By contextualising his work through his own vision of minimalism, Niblock affirms: “removing all that is superfluous from musical structures and working with a reduced part of this structure. That, for me, is the definition of minimalism.” 1 The Movement of People Working (1972-1991) is undoubtedly his greatest and probably best known work.

In the 1980s he realised a series of audiovisual works entitled Anecdotes from Childhood, a series of interviews with people in which they tell stories from their childhood, presented as an installation with several monitors together with slides with black-and-white abstract landscapes made with very sensitive film stock, creating a dichotomy... between the interviews and an abstract imaginary that transports us to incomprehensible images. They are almost like dream images. A more abstract side of Niblock whose only similar work is Magic Sun, a 1968 film about Sun Ra. From 1972 to 2013, Niblock has been omnipresent in the international scene, presenting live media works in many concerts around the world. Although those works have been presented all over the world, this article will not further address them.

Niblock’s work breaks all the structures on which classical cinematographic works are supposedly based: narration, edition, melody, rhythm and synchronicity. His work is like a sculpture, like a monolithic altar, like expanding blocks of physical perception. For me, Phill’s work is the first truly open audiovisual work, the first truly spatial sound experience that I have ever experienced. My first truly audiovisual journey.

Intermedia, cross media, whatever one may call it, Phill Niblock’s work contains everything that counts for me, everything that is essential. His work requires attention, patience, and finally, the ability to be enraptured . Phill Niblock’s music levitates in order to sedate our senses for a better understanding of ourselves and our attitudes. His work is a continuous progression, an invisible mental channel. Always unpredictable, his music serves as a guide to liberate our viscera. In other words, his work is a psychophysical experience. The images become a focal point and the music transports us further and further. His cinema presents a sensory vision in which both visual and sound fields overlap in time and space wih no clear synchronicity.

Niblock’s music can be compared with a waterfall in its intensity, its obsessiveness and detail, its solemn beauty. I always think the best way to describe Niblock’s music is by comparing it with the siren song of Homer’s Odyssey, an unidentified sound that touches us deeply and sink our ships into the depths of an ocean of perception. His music is possibly the most advanced form of music I know, a physiological music in which the spectator’s body is part of the compositional process, their thoracic capacity the receiver of 120 decibels of sound that the body has to process in order to completely feel them. His music is the maximum expression of music as an inflection point: the beginning of what we could call music of the future.

Phill’s images, for me, are unconditionally linked to his music.

They are stitched together in a natural and asynchronous way.

Images captured in 16mm film, long shots carefully composed to express the individual movements of workers, choreographers and dancers of the ballet of life, an eternal choreogra-

phy. Images captured in urban and rural peripheries around the world, of people in their work environments, men and women who use their hands and their bodies in an eternal work choreography, seemingly in tune with the universe of Niblock’s microtonal music. Those images are timeless, they could have been filmed today, in the 1960s or even in the distant past.

They are archetypes, metaphors about men, speaking to all of us in a profound way, converting and transporting us. Their duration is perfect, as well as their framing. They are captured not as a document by rather as a choreographic gesture, like visual music. They are raw, with saturated colours. The sound seems to take place inside one’s head, while Niblock’s music penetrates one’s senses and begins its polyphonic hypnosis, making one’s body fall prey to a spell. The movement of People Working has greatly impacted our understanding of audiovisual language by expanding its very definitions. The films of the series invite us to reconsider our relationship with the world and examine our deepest interior, it tests our mental state, our ability to understand the world. Phill Niblock’s visual strategies have influenced new generations of filmmakers like me, who understood and saw his work as a manifesto, due to its surprising simplicity and purity, its radical openness and epic quality. The magic and beauty of these images emerge from their abstraction and concentration, from their internal capacity to inebriate us and transport us to another dimension, a different mental and physical state.

The only quality I respect in an artist is his or her ability to physically transport us through time. Art for me is a matter of travelling through time, a form of healing. Artists do that both physically and mentally. That’s exactly what Phill Niblock’s work does. It is not ethnographic or documentary, it is not a visual or musical environment, it is not a mere new compositional tool to captivate the spectator. Phill Niblock’s work is a ritual.

Carlos Casas is a filmmaker and artist whose practice encompasses film, sound and visual arts. Some references: Speech 2 was created based on improvisations by actor Rodrigo Bolzan in a rehearsal room; Speech 4 is an adaptation of a sequence of real public speeches by the former Minister of Justice of France, Christiane Taubira; Speeches 7 and 15 are original texts by Marcio Abreu written during the creation process of the play; Speeches 6 and 12 were collectively written, following a compositional criterium with spatially-arranged words, and turned into music by Felipe Storino; Speech 10 is an adaptation of a real public speech given at the UN by Pepe Mujica, former President of Uruguay.

by Pepe Mujica, former president of Uruguay. In the final part of his speech, he moves away from the microphones, starts to speak in Portuguese, approaches the audience, begins to read the Portuguese subtitles, stops reading and, together with the audience, reads silently the text until the end.

— Friends, I come from the South. At the conjunction of the Atlantic and the River Plate, my country is a gentle, temperate plain where livestock graze. Its history is one of ports, leather, salted beef, wool and meat.

There were dark decades of lances and horses until finally, with the outset of the twentieth century, we were at the forefront of social, education and governmental affairs.

Today, we have re-emerged in a globalized world, having learned from our pain. My personal story is that of a boy — because I once was a boy — who like others wanted to change his times and his world and dreamed of a free and classless society. My mistakes were in part the results of my era. Obviously I take responsibility for them, but sometimes I cry: “If only I had the strength that I had when we enjoyed such utopia!”

However, I do not look towards the past because what we have today was created from the fertile ashes of yesterday. On the contrary, I am not on this planet to settle scores or to reminisce.

I am greatly anguished by the future that I will not see, and to which I have committed myself. Yes, it is possible to have a world with more humanity, but perhaps today the main task is to save life.

But I am from the South and I have come from the South to this Assembly.

I share with the millions of poor compatriots in cities, in the jungles, in the plains, in the pampas and the canyons of Latin America the common motherland that we are creating. I also have the duty to fight for all on behalf of my motherland.

I have the duty to fight for tolerance for those who are different and with whom we have differences and disagreements.

We do not need tolerance for those with whom we agree.

Tolerance is the foundation of peaceful coexistence, understanding that we are all different in this world.

I fight against the illicit economy, drug trafficking, theft, fraud, corruption â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the contemporary scourges unleashed by an opposite set of values and by those who maintain that we are happier when we are richer, no matter by what means. We have sacrificed the old, immaterial gods and we are now occupying the temple of the Market God. This god organizes our economy, our politics, our habits and our lives, and even provides us with rates and credit cards and the illusion of happiness.

We are promised a life of spending and squandering; in fact, it is a countdown against nature and against future humankind. It is a civilization against simplicity, against sobriety, against all natural cycles.

Worse yet, it is a civilization against freedom, which requires time to experience human relationships and the most important things: love, friendship, adventure, solidarity and family.

We have destroyed the real jungles and sown anonymous cement jungles. We have tackled a sedentary lifestyle with walking, insomnia with pills, solitude with electronics. Can we be happy when we are so far from the human essence? We have to ask ourselves this question.

Politics, the eternal mother of all human endeavours, has remained shackled to the economy and to the marketplace. Going from one adventure to another, politics achieves little more than perpetuating itself, and as such it delegates its power and spends its time bewildered, fighting for the Government. Out of control, human history marches forward, buying and selling everything and innovating in order to negotiate what is, in a way, non-negotiable. Marketing exists for everything: cemeteries and funeral services, maternity wards, fathers, mothers, grandparents, uncles, secretaries, cars and vacations. Everything is business.

The average city dweller wanders between financial institutions and tedious office routines, sometimes moderated by air conditioning. He often dreams about vacations and freedom. He dreams about having the ability to pay his bills until one day his heart stops and he is gone.

Other such soldiers will fall prey to the jaws of the marketplace, sharing in material accumulation. The crisis really rests in the powerlessness of politics, which is incapable of understanding that humankind cannot and will not escape nationalism, which is practically etched into our DNA. Today, it is time to fight to prepare a world without borders. The globalized economy has no other driving force except that of the private interests of the very few, and each nation State seeks only to maintain its own stability. Today, the great task for our peoples and our humble way of seeing things becomes the be-all and end-all.

More clearly, the world is clamouring for global regulations that respect scientific achievements, which abound, but it is not science that governs the world.

Neither the large nation States nor transnational companies, not to mention the financial system, ought to govern the world of humanity.

Yes, lofty politics combined with scientific wisdom â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it must come from science.

The portents of revolution are present in our age as in no other in the history of humankind, yet our age does not have a conscious direction.

The greed that has been such a negative force and such a driver of history has also pushed forward the material, scientific and technical progress that has made our era and our time what it is and has enabled a phenomenal leap forward on many different fronts. At the same time, this very tool — the greed that pushed us to domesticate science and transform technology — is paradoxically pushing us over the edge into a shadowy abyss, towards an unknown fate, an era without history, and we are left without eyes to see or the collective intelligence to continue to colonize and transform ourselves.

Individual greed easily triumphs over our species’ greed. Let us be clear. What is the big picture of which we speak? It is the system of global life on Earth, including human life, with all the fragile balances that make it impossible for us to continue as we are. On the other hand — and this is less contentious and more obvious — in the West in particular, because we are indeed from the West, though we are also from the South, the republics arose to make the claim that men are equal, that no one is better than anyone else, and that Governments should represent the common good, justice and equity. Often, these republics become warped and fall into the habit of ignoring ordinary people, the man on the street, the common people.

In fact, that common man should be the central cause of the republic’s political struggle. Republican Governments should increasingly look like their respective peoples in the way they live and the way they deal with life.

The fact is that we tend to cultivate feudal anachronisms, spoiled affectations and hierarchical distinctions that undermine the best feature of republics — the fact that no one is better than anyone else.

Listen, my dear friends: every minute in the life of our planet, we spend two million dollars on military budgets around the world — two million dollars a minute on military budgets!

That process, from which we cannot escape, perpetuates hatred, fanaticism and distrust, fuels new wars and wastes fortunes. Thus, each wields arms commensurate with his size. And that is where we are today, because we can barely reason as individuals, let alone as a species.

We are not all equal. We cannot be equal in a world where some are strong and others weak. As a result, our world democracy is wounded.

In our heart of hearts we long to help humankind emerge from prehistory.

As long as we do not emerge from prehistory and retire war as a resort when politics fails, that is the long march and challenge we have ahead of us. We say that in full awareness; we are familiar with the loneliness of war.

At the same time, we must understand that the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s poor are not from Africa or Latin America; they are all part of humankind, and that means that we must help them to develop so they can lead decent lives. The necessary resources exist.

The entire material basis has changed and it has changed man. In our culture, we act as if nothing had happened. Instead of us controlling globalization, it controls us.

However, that is the paradox. With talent and collective work, with science, step by step humankind can make deserts green; humankind can bring agriculture to the seas; humankind can develop agriculture that lives with salt water. If the power of humankind is focused on what is essential, it is infinite.

Here we see the greatest sources of energy. What do we know about photosynthesis? Almost nothing. There is a great deal of energy in the world, if we work together to use it properly. It is possible to eliminate poverty from the planet.

It is possible to create stability. It will be possible for future generations, if they begin to reason as a species and not just as individuals.

But if those dreams are to come true, we will have to control ourselves or we will die. We will die because we are not capable of being at the level of the civilization that we have been developing with our efforts.

That is our dilemma. We should not spend our time merely correcting the consequences. Let us consider the deep-rooted causes, the civilization of waste, the present civilization that is stealing time from human life and wasting it on pointless matters. Let us remember that human life is a miracle. Consider that human life is a miracle, that we are alive as a result of a miracle, and that nothing is more important than life.

Our biological duty is, above all, to respect life, promote it, take care of it, reproduce it and understand that the species is our being.
