His relevant, challenging and amusing talk takes a look at life in education today with advice on how to navigate potential challenges. He seeks to encourage a focus on what we’re good at rather than what we’re not and he provides invaluable advice on how to inflate ‘balloons of self belief’. BOOK HERE

Tim Jollands, Visiting Research Fellow, will introduce you to the basics of the letterpress printing process. Level: Beginner.

Learn to create and edit vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator CC. We’ll demonstrate a range of techniques for creating logos, graphics and working with typography. Previous experience of other Adobe CC applications (InDesign and Photoshop) is useful but not essential. Level: Beginner.

Learn the basics of document layout with Adobe InDesign CC. We will take you through setting up a document for print, creatively laying out pictures and text, plus some neat interactive features for PDF and EPUB production. Level: Beginner.

A few simple Photoshop skills will enable you to quickly improve and edit digital images. Starting with simple tweaks to exposure and focus, we’ll show you how to edit and manipulate your photographs. Level: Beginner.

Explore the history of our beautiful campus. Following on from our discoveries in SPA week 2018, we will be joined by BACAS (our friendly local archaeology society) in exploring some newly identified archaeological remains. We will be undertaking geophysics and topographical survey in an attempt to solve an archaeological mystery. No experience necessary. Please note this activity is weather dependent.

Behind the scenes of the Art and Design Collection Wed, 10:00 – 12:00 & 14:00 – 16:00, CC.SB.G.4 & T.01 Discover the history of the Bath Academy of Art (predecessor to BSAD) by spending an hour with the Art and Design Collection, examining prints, paintings and sculpture from the art school’s years at Corsham. The second hour will be a guided drawing session in Corsham Court’s Tower Studio – used by a series of artists throughout the 20th century. Please note that the Tower Studio (T.01) is accessible by stairs only. All materials supplied. Level: Beginner. Creating visual narratives and showcasing a story through a series of images. Students will also learn the basics of framing, composition and lighting techniques and editing in Adobe Lightroom. Level: Beginner.

Clay Forest: Come and play, make a tree from clay to place in our communal clay forest. We will be thinking through making, and discussing the importance of creativity in learning. No tools or complicated processes. All ideas are valued. What do trees mean to you - and to us all collectively? The finished trees will be fired to be part of a ceramic forest in the Forest of Imagination 2019.

The Crisis Game will parachute you into a senior national leadership role during a simulated international crisis. You and your colleagues will have to make rapid assessments and decisions under pressure. What could possibly go wrong? The event leader has extensive experience of running crisis games and was lead umpire for a Pentagon game in 2018. Level: Beginner.

Deep Listening® is a multifaceted mindfulness practice founded by composer Pauline Oliveros. It is especially focused on expanding one’s awareness of all forms of sound, and of how we can experience the world of sound. It also involves body energy work (Qigong), improvised sounding exercises, and dream-work. In other words, listening in body, listening in sound, and listening in dreams. Ron is a certified teacher of Deep Listening, having studied with Oliveros over a period of nine years. The workshop requires no previous experience, but only a willingness to open yourself to a new mindful, creative practice. Level: Beginner.

Explore how gaming and multiplatform media can be used to encourage people to engage with rural Bath. Prototype interactive media products (video, VR, website, social media) for Bathscape, using research ideas led by The Centre for Media Research. Work across a range of skill-sets, including: research, creative ideation, user experience design, and technical development. Level: Intermediate.

Dr Bike run by Bath Bike Workshop (Julian House) will be visiting the Newton Park campus you’ll find them near the bike stands at the front of Commons. Offering cyclists a free 30-minute health check of your bikes – service is offered on a first-come-first-served basis.

You’ve been studying too hard and fallen asleep in the library. When you awake, you are trapped inside and you need to get home to central Bath! Work with the group to find hidden clues and solve puzzles so you can escape before the last bus departs. Expect a mixture of library themed and cryptic clues. Level: Beginner.

Makaton is an internationally recognised sign language, which enables everyone to be able to communicate and have a voice. Makaton consists of a signing and symbol communication system, and can be adapted to any workplace or environment (e.g librarian, police, health professional, teacher, lawyer, social worker or working with refugees or those with English as an additional language). This workshop will introduce you to the foundations of Makaton, and give you the opportunity to learn some of the core signs and symbols. Makaton is an invaluable skill and promotes the voice and rights of all children and adults. Level: Beginner.

Boomtown have offered Bath Spa University a major theatrical venue and the chance to create Boomtown’s first University: ‘Ivory Towers Academy’. Meet with professionals from Boomtown, The Invisible Circus and the SWCTN Fellowship programme for five days to devise and playtest how the venue might work. We will explore how the existing narratives and aesthetics of Boomtown and BSU’s variety of disciplines can be applied to creating a new satirical immersive theatre game venue. Slow Flash Mob Wed, 10:00 – 12:00, Brunel Square (Bath Spa train station) Inspired by Joanna Wright’s exhibition #Getoutofyourcar as part of Fringe Arts Bath, dance and visual artist Jacqueline Anderson wants to make visible the pollution that Bath is succumbing to in movement form. Come along and join in a slow flash mob dance outside Brunel Square in front of Bath Spa Station. The purpose of the flash mob would be to draw attention to the invisible pollutants we can’t see, while everyone goes about their daily activities in Bath City Centre. This is an opportunity for individuals to take part in silent commentary of what impact vehicle pollution can have on people and our environment. Continuing from Spa Week 1 Inhabit ‘Inhabit’ is a Bath School of Art and Design collaborative opportunity that started during the first SPA Week in November 2018. The aim of the project is for students to creatively inhabit the University, possibly using physical spaces and other form of interventions within the institution. Following presentations and provocations in SPA Week 1, the collaborative student group will install their outputs in SPA Week 2. Their outputs will be public to all students and staff and everyone is encouraged to support and critique these outputs, creating an open feedback approach and crossdisciplinary dialogue.
