What textiles can we accept? Textiles include everything from clothes to shoes and home furnishings. Examples of the household textiles that we can accept for re-use or recycling in your green box collection or at our Recycling Centres include:

All items we collect will be sorted locally and those that are in re-usable, good condition will be sold in the UK or exported for re-use. Even worn out clothes that cannot be re-used will either be broken down and recycled to make things such as industrial rags, speakers and insulation, or used as energy from waste so these are still valuable too.
•W e can accept all of the items above in any condition, but they must be clean and dry, not dirty. • Worn out clothes, a holey sock, a T shirt with a stain, or a pair of ripped jeans is fine. These items can be recycled and made into new things instead of going to landfill. If in doubt, put it out!

Please put your items in a plastic bag in your green box to keep them dry – we can’t re-use mouldy or wet material. Put them out on a dry day if possible.

The benefits of re-use and recycling • By using your green box collection or our Recycling Centres to donate your
textiles you can be sure that none of them will end up in landfill. Some textiles in landfill may not biodegrade while those that do create harmful gases which potentially damage the Earth’s atmosphere.
•W e send your textiles to Bristol Textile Recyclers where they are carefully examined by hand to decide which are re-usable before being sorted into over 160 different categories. Re-usable textiles are either re-used in the UK or exported for re-use in Eastern Europe, central Africa or Pakistan. This gives local people access to good quality, affordable used clothing and textiles where new clothing and textiles may be inaccessible or unaffordable.
