In 2013-14 we recycled and treated nearly 75% of the waste we collected from your homes, but the amount of rubbish we collected in your black sacks is increasing – about a quarter of this is food waste. Collecting and sending your rubbish to landfill or specialised treatment is much more expensive than recycling it. You pay for this in your Council tax, so if everyone reduced, recycled and composted even more we could save money to use for other important council services. It costs us around:
Food waste recycling Use your food waste bin for ALL cooked or uncooked food waste. Do not put food waste in your black sack. This will stop birds and animals attacking your rubbish for food. Keep your smaller caddy in your kitchen to collect your food waste and keep your larger food waste bin outside. Your food waste will be made into compost to use on farmland and used to make renewable energy.

• Rinse both containers regularly. • Lock your outside bin by pulling the handle forward to keep out animals and birds.

How to put out your recycling and rubbish on collection day

We collect your recycling and rubbish on the same day of the week but with different vehicles. All collections are weekly except garden waste which is fortnightly. We collect as normal on all bank holidays except over Christmas and New Year. You must: • Put out your containers by 7am on your collection day but not before 8pm on the previous night. • Put out your containers at the front edge of your property where they can be seen easily by our crews. • Bring your emptied containers back in on your collection day. You can be fined for leaving your rubbish and/or recycling out at the wrong time or place or if it is not contained in appropriate containers and is causing a mess. Green box recycling
Shoes – Any condition, tie together in pairs and place in a plastic bag to keep dry.
Please sort the different materials in your box to ensure we recycle the correct things, help our crews to sort faster and reduce traffic congestion. If you have space at home, you could order an extra free green box - use your new one to mix your cans and plastics together and put all other recycling in the other box.

Mixed paper – Including envelopes and greeting cards. You don’t need to remove staples or windows from envelopes.

Mixed glass bottles and jars – Rinse but no need to remove labels. Small appliances – Any small electrical with a plug or batteries that will fit into a carrier bag. Place bag next to your green box. Clothes – Including towels, sheets, and curtains in any condition but they must be clean - place in a plastic bag to keep dry.
Engine oil – Must be in a sealed engine oil container placed next to your green box.
Mobile phones – Include charger if possible.

• No black plastic such as food trays and bags. • No film such as cling film, bags, bubble wrap and cellophane. • No crisp packets. • No polystyrene. • No hard non packaging plastic such as plant pots, toys and washing up bowls. • No plastic used to contain medicine or chemicals used in the garden.
Green box recycling
Household plastic packaging – Bottles, pots, tubs and trays. Rinse, put tops back on and squash to save space on our vehicles. It is ok to mix cans and plastic together in your box.
Car batteries – Place next to green box.
Batteries – All household types. Place together in a small bag at the top of your box.
Foil – Wash and squash. Cans, tins and aerosols – Rinse and squash cans but no need to remove labels.
Spectacles – Include case if possible.

Blue bag recycling
Rubbish collection
You must use your weekly collection only for things you can’t recycle. Do not put food waste in your rubbish. It is your responsibility to make sure your rubbish is securely contained to help keep our streets clean.

Please use your blue bag for • Cardboard • Brown paper • Food and drink cartons (Tetra Paks) You must flatten, fold or cut your cardboard so it fits into your blue bag (no bigger than 45cm square) so it fits onto our vehicles. If it won’t fit your blue bag we can’t collect on our vehicle.
• Use strong plastic sacks, and tie them to help prevent animals and birds ripping them open. • Wrap anything sharp (like broken glass) in newspaper to keep our crews safe.

We can collect larger household items such as furniture and fridges from the outside of your house for a charge. We offer discounted rates for those on certain benefits and to students. Prices are on our website or contact Council Connect. If your item is still in good condition please consider donating to charities or using reuse websites such as www.freecycle.org or www.ilovefreegle.org
Rubbish collection
• Use black plastic sacks or tied carrier bags to contain your rubbish for collection. • Or use a normal dustbin to store your sacks and put out your bin on collection day. • Don’t overfill your sacks so we can lift them without splitting.
