We need you to recycle as much as possible This will save the Council money to help protect frontline services as well as being better for the environment. You can do this by: 1. Making full use of your weekly recycling collection from home • Food bin for all your food waste (see page 3) • Green box for recycling 13 items plus small electrical items (see page 4 & 5) • Blue bag for recycling cardboard (see page 6) 2. Composting as much as you can at home, or using our fortnightly garden waste collection (for a charge). 3. Taking larger unwanted items such as furniture to one of our three Recycling Centres, or booking a bulky waste collection for a charge. 4. Using your weekly black sack rubbish collection for anything you cannot recycle.

How to put out your recycling and rubbish for collection. • We collect your recycling and rubbish on the same day of the week but with different vehicles. • All collections are weekly except garden waste which is fortnightly. • You must put out your containers at the front edge of your property by 7am on your collection day (or after 8pm the night before) where they can be easily seen by our crews. • Please bring all containers back in as soon as possible on your collection day.
• We collect as normal on all bank holidays except over Christmas and New Year. • You can be fined for leaving your rubbish and/or recycling out at the wrong time or place. If you need help putting out your recycling and rubbish please contact us to find out about assisted collections. Recycle more in your food waste collection
Please do not put food waste in your black sack but use your food waste bin for ALL cooked or uncooked food instead. This will stop birds and animals attacking your rubbish for food. Your food waste will be made into compost to use on farmland. Keep your smaller caddy in your kitchen to collect your food waste and keep your larger food waste bin outside. Your food waste caddy is easy to use 1. Line your caddy with a compostable liner (bag) or newspaper. Do not use plastic bags. 2. Put your food waste into your caddy. 3. Before it gets too full put it in your food waste bin outside. Rinse your bin regularly to prevent food from getting stuck. 4. Lock your bin by pulling the handle forward – this keeps out animals and birds. 5. Put your food waste bin out for collection on your weekly collection day.

Small electrical items We now collect any small electrical items with a plug or batteries. They must be able to fit in an average size plastic carrier bag. Place the bag next to your green box. Please donate any working electricals in reusable condition to charity if possible. Take larger items such as TV monitors to your Recycling Centre.
We want you to do this because • Grouping materials will help our crews sort faster and ensure we collect only the correct things to make for better quality recycling. • Squashing plastic packaging, cans and foil will save space on our vehicles and reduce the number of journeys we need to make. • Washing items makes it more pleasant for all to handle and reduces interest from animals. • Putting clothes and shoes in plastic bags in your green box keeps them dry and clean, and therefore more likely they can be reused (or recycled if not in good enough condition). • Putting household batteries together in a small bag at the top of your box stops them causing problems if they are loose. Did you know? • You don’t need to remove staples or windows from envelopes. • You don’t need to remove labels from jars, bottles or cans.

Yes please The easiest way to remember is if it is a plastic bottle, pot, tub or tray we can recycle it UNLESS IT IS BLACK.
No thanks • ANY black plastic such as food trays and bags. • No film such as cling film, bags, bubble wrap and cellophane. • No crisp packets. • No polystyrene. • No hard non packaging plastic such as plant pots, toys and washing up bowls. • No plastic used to contain medicine or chemicals used in the garden.
Green box recycling
Please group your materials in your green box to help our crews sort faster and ensure we recycle the correct things – to help you we suggest mixing cans and plastic together in one box. You could order another free green box to group other items such as paper and glass. Please contact us if you need a lid for your green box to prevent things from blowing away. Using a lid enables you to stack your boxes tidily.

Blue bag cardboard collection
Recycle more in your blue bag Yes please Please use your blue bag for • Cardboard • Brown paper • Food and drink cartons (Tetra Paks) You must flatten, fold or cut your cardboard so it fits into your blue bag (no bigger than 45cm square) so it fits into the container on our vehicles. If it won’t fit your blue bag we can’t collect on our vehicle.

We can collect larger household items such as furniture and fridges from the outside of your house for a charge. We offer discounted rates for those on certain benefits and to students. Prices are on our website or contact Council Connect. If your item is still in good condition please consider donating to charities or using reuse websites such as www.freecycle.org or www.ilovefreegle.org
Use this weekly collection only for things you can’t recycle. Use black sacks or carrier bags (tied) or a normal dustbin. If you live in a street where we have issued Council reusable rubbish bags please use these.
Please • Don’t overfill your sacks so we can lift them without splitting. • Use strong sacks so animals can’t get into them.
• Wrap anything sharp (like broken glass) first, in plenty of newspaper to keep our crews safe.
