Welcome to Bridgwater A community has existed here for more than 1,000 years and the many examples of fine architecture throughout the town reflect its prosperous past. Bridgwater War Memorial – Angel of Bridgwater Grade II Listed – Kings Square (as image). Why not combine a shopping trip with a visit to the Blake Museum, the Arts Centre or just a stroll around this fine town. Bridgwater’s location at the foot of the Quantock Hills and on the edge of the Somerset Levels makes it an ideal location for exploring all the countryside nearby. Bridgwater is world famous for its illuminated Guy Fawkes Carnival which takes place each November and lights up the town with music, movement and colour – stay after the procession and experience the squibbing spectacular which stretches down through the High Street – more info visit www.bridgwater carnival.org.uk. Another annual event is Bridgwater Fair (held on St Matthews field), which always starts on the last Wednesday of September for four days. Starting life as a livestock fair – the first day still is – but now has evolved into a spectacle of modern fairground rides and stalls – stretching the length of West Street. For more information email jan.richardson@show mensguildwestern.co.uk.

Bridgwater – The Home of Carnival UK, and every year the town’s carnival celebrations adds further credence to that belief. Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Concerts Monday, September 29, to Saturday, October 11, 2014, Bridgwater Town Hall These popular concerts have been an annual feature in Bridgwater since 1883, and are now seen as a curtain raiser to the eagerly anticipated procession in November. Over 3,500 tickets are available for the performances, where a cast of over 600 entertainers from 13 carnival clubs, dance troupes and front of curtain acts entertain an enthralled audience. Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Procession Saturday, November 1, 2014 2014 sees the 409th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot and the failed attempt of Guy Fawkes to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Ever since the conspirator was discovered by the guards of King James I on that cold November night, Bridgwater has celebrated his failure in its own unique way. Approximately 60 carnival carts, (as image) some as big as 100ft long, 16.5ft high and 11ft wide and lit by thousands of lights, wind their way through the centre of this historic town, creating an explosive atmosphere of

BTG_new.indd 11

light, sound and movement. Accompanying these carts are groups and individual masqueraders on foot, marching bands and majorettes, bringing their own carnival flavour to the festivities. The parade starts at 7pm and takes over two hours to pass any one viewing point on the two-and-a-half mile route, and the carnival is brought to a dramatic finale with an amazing firework display, in the middle of the town (the squibbing). On carnival day there will be a host of top class entertainment taking place in the town centre to keep

all of the family entertained. The build up to our carnival weekend starts at 7.30pm on Friday, October 31, 2014 with Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival’s ‘Grand Firework Display’ at St Matthew’s Field. This glittering fireworks display is again sponsored by Bridgwater Town Council, with a Halloween slant. SOMERSET BRICK AND TILE MUSEUM (as image) The museum is dedicated to the local industry of brick and tile-making, one of the many labour-intensive coal-based industries once found in Somerset. The core of the museum is the only remaining tile kiln in Bridgwater. It used to be one of six at the former Barham Brothers’ Yard at East Quay. It was last fired in 1965, the year the works closed. Demonstrated inside are the methods and processes involved in making the impressive variety of bricks, tiles, terracotta plaques and other wares that create the look of Somerset towns like

Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea and Glastonbury. The kiln is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, saved from dereliction in the 1990s when it became a museum, now run in partnership between Somerset Heritage Service, Somerset Work Preparation Services and Sedgemoor District Council. History of Bridgwater towards the west bank of the River Parrett. This area was less liable to flooding than the surrounding moors and formed a convenient site for a river crossing. Listed in the Domesday Book as an agricultural community know as Brugie, the town developed as a river port and commercial centre. A castle was built on the west bank of the River Parrett by William de Bruere, with construction starting in 1200 at the same time the town was granted borough status. By the 15th century the town had grown to about 300 houses and had become a thriving port. Large amounts of woollen cloth from Somerset were exported from Bridgwater. The town suffered badly in the English Civil War and was the scene of a major siege. In three days at the end of July 1645 Parliamentary artillery destroyed virtually SOMERSET HERITAGE CENTRE The Somerset Heritage Centre houses Somerset's archives, local studies library, Historic Environment Record, and archaeological and museum reserve collections, as well as the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society library and office. all of Bridgwater’s domestic and commercial buildings. The castle was subsequently destroyed by the Roundheads as a reprisal for the town’s resistance and the site lay derelict for almost a century. During the Civil War Robert Blake, Bridgwater’s most famous son, made his name serving under Popham for the Parliamentarians. Blake later became Cromwell’s General at Sea. Bridgwater’s cloth trade enjoyed a further boom in Studies Service, the Heritage Learning team, the Historic Environment Service, the Museums Service and the Victoria County History of Somerset. the early 18th century, but later declined as the industrial revolution moved activity towards cheap sources of power. As the importance of Bristol overshadowed the port of Bridgwater, the town fell into a period of decline. During the 19th century an increase in the manufacture of roofing tiles and bricks, and the growth of the railways, continued to shape Bridgwater. Housing developed eastwards towards the railway station and the brick and tile industry became one of the main employers in the town. The Somerset Brick and Tile Museum, in East Quay, is a reminder of an industry that was so important to Bridgwater. Find out more about the town’s history at the Blake Museum, 5 Blake Street, TA6 3NB or visit www.bridgwater blakemuseum.org.uk or 01278 456127. The Battle Room (Blake Museum )(as image). ridgwater Town Team are a group B of stakeholders

working together to deliver support to help encourage all new and existing businesses in Bridgwater Town Centre. Town centres are changing, as how and when we use them continues to evolve. Supermarkets, internet shopping and out-of-town retail means that businesses need to work harder to meet the needs of today’s value-minded consumers. Changes in local demographics and shift working affect the way the service and leisure sectors meet the needs of customers. Digital marketing and social media sit alongside more traditional marketing for new customers in all sectors of the business community. The team have, to date, secured funding for projects from the Government, Mary Portas Town Teams and Magnox. As funds allow, they will continue to deliver practical projects on the ground, while linking into the strategic longer

term plans for Bridgwater. Projects include the awarding of grants to improve shop fronts for both new and existing independent businesses in the town centre. Delivery of workshops, training and advice on a range of marketing, merchandising, business development and social media. Improved signage to guide footfall to all areas of the Town Centre. Development of the FREE Bridgwater Town Guide Mobile App, so locals and visitors really can

have the “the town centre at their finger tips”. The team support the expansion of the Bridgwater Castle Market. Now, every Friday in Fore Street from 9am until 3pm. Adding colour and vibrancy to the town centre more info 07764 156621. A range of events have been organised in the town centre to encourage the community to come and see what is on offer in the town centre. The team supports National and Professional Trade Association “shop local” events, such

as Love Your Market Fortnight held this year from May 14 to 28 and “Independents day” on July 4. The annual Christmas Light Switch on – Snowflakes and Shopping, will be held on Friday, November 21. This helps launch the Christmas trading season, and attracts visitors and locals to Bridgwater. All opportunities are taken to actively promote Bridgwater in the media and elsewhere. If you are a business that would like some help, or could offer support (financial or otherwise), the Bridgwater Town Team would love to hear from you.
