Bath-based Olympian Amy Williams MBE has been announced as the official ambassador of ReBalance Bath, a new wellness festival coming to Bath in February 2023.
Amy was a British gold medalist in the women’s Skeleton event at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, securing Great Britain’s first gold medal in an individual event for 30 years. Since retiring as an athlete in 2012, Amy has maintained an impressive profile through television presenting roles, public appearances and motivational speaking, most recently publishing a guide to success in her book, ‘Talent to Triumph’.
We sat down with Amy to ask her about her life in Bath...
What inspires you about living in Bath? I have lived in Bath for 34 years – almost my whole life. I love the small city feel, the countryside around Bath, and the stunning Georgian architecture. When the sun glows on the Bath stone, it’s magical. Tell us about your new book...
After winning my gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics, I knew I wanted to write a book to advise and encourage young athletes. It has top tips, lessons, interviews and practical tools to help athletes wanting to achieve the next level in their sport. It’s also relatable to working and business life, too!
What motivates you?
For me, it’s always been to see how good I could be. As an athlete, how far could
I push my body, how strong could I get, and how fast. It’s good to challenge yourself, however little or big that may be. What is your secret for a healthy life? Balance! Looking after yourself. Eating well, exercising, talking to friends and family, and having fun. There are always highs and lows that come along, but at the heart of it should be your wellness, fitness, and for me, my family.
Why are you involved in ReBalance Bath? I’m honoured to be asked to be involved in the festival. It brings all my favourite things together – Bath, fitness, health, wellness, and friends coming together. welcometobath.co.uk/rebalance-bath
Bath Carnival will be helping to celebrate the start of the festive season in Bath at the Bath BID’s Countdown to Christmas event. The Bath Carnival team have been holding free lantern-building workshops for young people to help light up the city on the evening of 17th November, and will also be bringing along a range of light-up costumed characters to ensure the city sparkles as the Bath Christmas Light Trail is switched on.
Bath Carnival is one of the highlights of the city’s annual event calendar, bringing colour and atmosphere to the city centre, and one of the key creatives behind the spectacular event is Hannah Southfield.
Lead Artist Hannah works alongside Festival Coordinator Stuart Matson and many other talented professional artists and volunteers to ensure Bath Carnival is both visually beautiful and inclusive.
Hannah is responsible for some of the Carnival’s most ambitious concepts, including the amazing Batari, a life-sized Asian elephant puppet operated by up to seven performers simultaneously.
Hannah is an extremely talented designer, maker, and artist with a quiet insistence on the quality and innovation that has become synonymous with the organisation.
Stuart, Hannah and their team of professionals at Bath Carnival promote engagement in the community by delivering hundreds of hours of creative activities, arts-based workshops and learning opportunities throughout the year. Their workshops offer vulnerable children and adults the opportunity to experience music, dance, theatre and costume-making, with everyone coming together in the summer to showcase their creations at Bath Carnival. bathcarnival.co.uk
Bath’s independent businesses offer choice, tradition and innovation, as well as a personal and passionate service. Indies create jobs and have a positive impact on the city’s economy, supporting local artists and designers, food producers and growers.
Supporting the businesses in your local area is a greener choice, and it has never been more important to show Bath’s independent entrepreneurs that you value everything they do.
There are so many great ways to show some love to the independent businesses you wouldn’t want to live without, and many of them don’t cost a penny! Our independent business directory makes it easier than ever before to remind yourself of old favourites, discover new treasures, plan your next indie trip to the city, and show your support on social media.
Here are five easy ways to support Bath’s independent businesses and show them that you care...
Christmas is a season for giving, so there’s never been a better time to explore Bath’s indies and find some unique and special presents for your loved ones.
Many businesses offer gift cards, which are ideal for those who are difficult to buy for, or you can let your loved ones pick their own perfect present with a Bath Gift Card, which is accepted at over 168 businesses in the city.
Be sure to follow your favourite indie brands on social media and engage with their content. By liking, commenting on, sharing or saving a post, you can help their posts to reach more potential customers.
There are so many independent businesses to discover in Bath. Make a list of indies you’ve never visited before and pledge to stop by this winter. Your visit will make a world of difference!
Independent businesses with small marketing budgets benefit enormously from word-of-mouth recommendations. If you have had a great experience, be sure to tell your friends or post an endorsement on social media.
The Totally Locally £5 concept is all about showing people how easy it is to support their local high streets. If everybody in Bath spent just £5 a week at the city’s independent businesses, an extra £17.3 million would be pumped into the local economy per year!
Tell us a bit about Honey Willow...
Named after our daughters Honey and Willow, we make meaningful jewellery that celebrates loved ones and life’s milestones. We have sold online for nearly 13 years and our website holds our full range of jewellery, much of which is made to order. We now have a shop on Pulteney Bridge, with a workshop opposite, where the team make our customers’ jewellery.
We fell in love with Bath 15 years ago. It’s a beautiful city, surrounded by countryside, with friendly, down-to-earth, creative people who love living here. I grew up in London, where a lot of people are just moving through. In Bath, everyone is happy to be here.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath... The lido has reopened at Cleveland Pools – a huge project which has been lovingly brought back to life by a team of local volunteers.
What do you do to spoil yourself?
I love going out for lunch or dinner with my husband or with friends. A favourite place for lunch is the Wheelwright Arms in Monkton Combe, and Walcot House is always a treat for lunch, dinner or cocktails.
Your top indie recommendation in Bath? Botanica Studios is the perfect destination for anyone with a house plant obsession!
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months?
Christmas in Bath is wonderful. Bath Christmas Market brings extra visitors and Bath’s independents put in a huge effort for both visitors and residents. We are excited for our second Christmas as a bricksand-mortar shop on Pulteney Bridge, and we can’t wait to get into the festive spirit with our customers.

Tell us a bit about Green Park Brasserie and Bath Pizza Co...
Green Park Brasserie is a steakhouse and jazz bar based in the old Green Park Railway Station in Bath city centre. We showcase outstanding local produce from Bath and the South West – think local steak, fish, burgers and ribs, as well as vegan and vegetarian dishes. Our buzzing atmosphere is added to with our live jazz, funk, soul and swing, which runs on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, year round. We also offer popular Sunday roast, brunch, and bottomless brunch menus. Established in 2016, Bath Pizza Co is the Brasserie’s younger sibling, located on the old station side terrace. It has a more casual feel, where you can watch your food being made in front of you, and the world going by, with two-for-£12 cocktails. Bath Pizza Co landed in the top three of the National Pizza Awards, and the businesses have recently been recommended in National Geographic Traveller Food, The Sunday Times and Culture Trip.
We’re a father-son team from Bath, who are passionate about adding to the city’s foodie scene. The Brasserie has been running for over 30 years, and Bath Pizza Co turns seven in spring 2023. Making Bath a fantastic place to live, work and visit is part of our mission – I believe that enjoying great food and drink in the company of those most important to you is one of life’s greatest pleasures. We’re fortunate that Bath has a strong tourism pull
and a local demographic of people who are serious about their food and drink. The city is thriving post-pandemic, and we’re proud to offer a unique setting and experience. I’m optimistic that this will continue in 2023.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath… There’s a newish deli in St James’s Square that has reopened – Sam’s Caffé – which offers a quiet getaway on the edge of town.
What do you do to spoil yourself? Enjoy many of Bath’s independent eateries: Chez Dominique, Hudson Steakhouse, and Chequers, to name a few.
Your top indie recommendation in Bath? We’re big fans of the friendly Taylor’s Bagels at the top of Walcot Street. The best coffee in Bath (probably!).
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months? When winter comes around, there’s something special about the crisp sunny mornings in the city centre and the air of anticipation building up to Christmas. Match day at the Recreation Ground around Christmas and new year often has an extra buzz to it. Further afield, walking in the countryside in the colder months, followed by a pub lunch and a roaring fire (The Packhorse in Southstoke or The Inn at Freshford), is a great way to enjoy the season.

As well as being a vibrant and thriving twenty-firstcentury city, Bath has history and heritage in its DNA. That’s why it’s the only city in the UK to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Archaeological evidence suggests there was human activity around the hot springs on which Bath is built as far back as 8,000 BC. Much later, in 863 BC, according to legend, Prince Bladud founded the city of Bath around the hot springs. Today, you can bathe in the same mineral-rich thermal springs that soothed the Romans 2,000 years ago at Thermae Bath Spa.
In July 2021, Bath, along with ten other historic spa towns, was inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, officially recognising the prominence and conservation of the city’s spa heritage and giving Bath its second UNESCO citation.
In February 2023, the city will be celebrating its wellness credentials with a new festival. ReBalance Bath will bring together venues, hotels, therapists and practitioners for a three-week celebration of wellness and the city’s connections to thermal waters. The festival will offer the perfect opportunity to rebalance, build resilience, and gear up to face challenges with confidence.
Taking place from 7th to 26th February, the ReBalance Bath programme will include plenty of free events and taster sessions, alongside luxury spa hotel packages and bookable activities.
The festival will be centred around the seven pillars of wellness – physical, mental, social, financial, spiritual, vocational and environmental – as well as offering themed days including Motivational Mondays, Water Wednesdays, Food Fridays and Soulful Sundays.
Bath-based Olympian Amy Williams MBE has been announced as the official ambassador of the festival, which has been organised by the Bath BID.
Event highlights will include:
■ Aquasana at Thermae Bath Spa
■ Laughter yoga with The Vitality Studio
■ Guided meditation and sound baths at The Soul Spa
■ Motivational talks with the Bath Rugby Foundation
■ Cold water therapy at Cleveland Pools
■ Teen yoga
■ Ocean film showings at Komedia Bath
■ A book talk with Amy Williams MBE at Topping & Company
■ ReBalance Bath marketplace at Apex City of Bath Hotel

Why Bath?
Where do I start? Bath is unique in its history and environment; the sense of community and mutual support here is fabulous. It’s big enough so there’s always something to do, and small enough to feel like you belong.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath... Yuup. This is a relatively new platform where you can book interesting and unusual local activities with Bath indies. I’ll definitely be heading to the website when I do my Christmas shopping!
What do you do to spoil yourself? Spend an hour (or two if I can) ‘floating’ in the pod at Results Body+Mind. Complete sensory stillness allows my creative brain to roam free. I always have my best ideas there!
Your top indie recommendation in Bath? You’ve got to love the Drawing Rooms. Tom’s passion and energy are infectious and he’s so supportive of indies in the city.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months?
There will be moment, I don’t know exactly when – maybe at Bath on Ice or during a quieter moment at Bath Christmas Market, maybe on the way to the panto or at my children’s Christmas carol concert – when that Christmas feeling sneaks in and fills my being. Just for a moment, the magic of the season is palpable, and I am a child again. That’s the moment I’m most looking forward to!

Marion Morris
“My favourite place in Bath is Parade Gardens – an oasis of peace in the middle of the usually bustling city. Parade Gardens enjoys a waterside location, with an interesting history, and architecture and statues within it.”
“I once worked in an office in Abbey Chambers, overlooking Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths. A fantastic outlook and location and the start of my love affair with the Abbey Churchyard. During the day, Abbey Churchyard is alive with the buzz of visitors to the city and the sounds of buskers’ music. After dark, Abbey Churchyard takes on a different, slightly
magical, character, with the torches around the Roman Baths reflecting the steam rising from the mineral waters and the Abbey illuminated by floodlighting.”
“One of my most favourite vistas in Bath is looking along the length of Great Pulteney Street, early in the morning when the sun has just risen, casting light and shadow along its length, when looking towards The Holburne Museum from Robert Adams’ Pulteney Bridge. It still manages to take my breath away.”
“My favourite thing to do in Bath is to explore lesser-known places off the main shopping route. I am still stunned by the buildings and views you get around each corner, and every season brings different light on the gorgeous stone. I also love to get a good view over the city, from Alexandra Park and on the Bath Skyline Walk.”
