BATAV IAHAV EN The Bataviahaven Lelystad is situated at the crossroads of the IJsselmeer and Markermeer near the Houtrib locks (190x18 metres) and offers therefore a unique logistic position. A more than interesting alternative to the busy port of Amsterdam. Only 45 minutes by car from Amsterdam, Bataviahaven offers spacious and easily accessible mooring places for passenger ships. It’s a young port with modern facilities and a beautiful architecture. Moored ships are accessible for both buses for passengers and freight cars of loaders. In the proximity of the Bataviahaven are several tourist destinations, some of them in walking distance. The port features a large and secure car park for long parking (€ 3.50 per day).

WITHIN REA CH Around the harbour are a large number of restaurants. Interesting destinations such as Amsterdam, Volendam, Marken, Volendam, Enkhuizen, Medemblik, Kampen, Zwolle and Friesland and the West Frisian Islands, are in short sailing time accessible from the Bataviahaven Lelystad. It makes this port a comfortable departure port and an ideal place for the arrival and departure of passengers. With the expansion of Lelystad Airport in 2018, the port is not only easily accessible across the water, by road and by public transport, but also by air. With the realization of the extended runway of Lelystad Airport, passengers fly from Europe destinations directly to Lelystad. The Bataviahaven is reachable in only 10-15 minutes by car from the airport.

LELYSTAD Lelystad is one of the youngest cities of The Netherlands and also the capital of the the Flevoland Province. The impoldering works for Lelystad began some time before the Eastern part of Flevoland was drained. The oldest part of the city, Lelystad Haven, was already constructed in 1950. Fifteen years later the foundations for the rest of the city were laid. And the first inhabitants of this part arrived in 1967. Thanks to this special history, the city of Lelystad is inseparably linked to water. With an area of 765 km² (189.035 acres), Lelystad is one of the biggest municipalities inside The Netherlands. Of that area, 45 km² (11.119 acres) consist of water. When visiting Lelystad you are actually moving at the former bottom of the sea: The city lies five metres below NAP. [1

ATTRACTIONS At the New Land museum you will discover all about how this biggest polder of Europe was created. Want some more history? Right next to the museum you’ll see the Batavia, an impressive reconstruction of the legendary VOC ship built in 1628. Or fly into the future, at the Aviodrome, an aviation theme park. It is located on the premises of Lelystad airport - an airport which will undergo drastic change not too far from here: As of 2018 it will become Schiphol’s alternate airport.

NEW FA CILITIES As of 1 October 2015, the new facilities such as electricity connections and three bulk drinking water pipes are ready. The Bataviahaven offers, in conjunction with a professional port service, good facilities for mooring for prolonged periods of time. Due to the presence of a professional bunker ship, also during the winter season, ships can take in fuel during their stay at Bataviahaven.

MAGNIFICENT NATURE A coastal area of seventeen kilometres length, five marinas with together more than three thousand moorings for sailing and motor yachts plus several beaches: Lelystad is truly a city of water sports. All year round water sport activities take place here. And besides water, also fantastic nature is abundant in and around the entire city. Take the famous Oostvaardersplassen, for instance. An area of 6000 hectares (14.826 acres). This is a unique, natural marshland featuring extensive lakes and wild grassland. Nature here follows its own ways, unhindered by humans. The internationally well-known nature reserve ‘De Oostvaardersplassen’ is open each day for hikers and for all those who love animals.

SHOPPING ELDORADO Heading for the Batavia haven you should definitely visit the Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet Centre there, too: Over 100 shops there offer a standard 30-70% discount - a real shopping Eldorado! Conclude your day with a wonderful dinner or an aperitif, at the Batavia haven Lelystad. The seven restaurants there offer you a great culinary variety to choose from.

[1] NAP = (Normal Amsterdam Level) is the level between average high tide and average low tide, and the standard to which all lows and highs in the country are measured.”

DRY ISLA NDS With the reclamation of the land, the islands Urk and Schokland where suddenly left high and dry; marooned islands in a dry landscape and quite unique anywhere in the world. Today Urk is a dynamic traditional fishing village. Worldwide Schokland is recognised as a symbol of the Dutch perennial struggle against water and was the first Dutch monument to be awarded a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

NEW NATURE

Flevoland; the largest land reclamation project anywhere on the planet! New land featuring modern architecture, nature areas and irresistible attractions. Explore the ‘sea bottom’ and discover the former islands of Urk and Schokland, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Take a stroll in Horsterwold, the largest deciduous forest in Western Europe. Or be awe inspired by the Netherlands’ biggest wetlands area, the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve. Just 20 minutes from Amsterdam and an amazing 6 meters below sea level; with its myriad of exciting opportunities any visit to Flevoland is an unforgettable experience.

U N IQUE H ISTORY AT EVERY TURN Flevoland is a land apart from the rest of the Netherlands. You are after all quite literally walking on what was once the sea bed. Engineer Cornelis Lely was eventually immortalised in folklore when he presented his schemes, ideas and dreams for reclaiming land from what was once known as the Zuiderzee, a immense shallow bay. The largest land reclamation project of all times was born: the Zuiderzee project. In 1924 thousands of workers descended upon the area to begin the massive backbreaking task of turning sea into usable land. The result became known as Flevoland, the world’s largest polder. A unique landscape came into being where previously there had only been brackish water; land an astonishing six meters below sea level. Even today, the exposed seabed yields all manner of objects each with their own history to tell, even shipwrecks. Flevoland is one of the largest “dry” ship graveyards in the world. 435 wrecks were found, along with almost 33,000 objects, dating from 1200 to 1900.

The new land offered opportunities for the creation of various new natural zones. One good example in Flevoland is the Oostvaardersplassen, the Netherlands’ largest wetland nature reserve. Then there is the Horsterwold, the most extensive continuous deciduous forest in Western Europe, where you can come across grazing herds of Konik horses. You can also enjoy the outdoor life in the Waterloopbos hiking area, where you can trek from the Delta Works to the harbours of Vlissingen and Lagos. This nature area also features scale models of over thirty large water management projects from all parts of the world. With its 2000 hectares of tulip fields, Flevoland is the largest tulip bulb growing region in the Netherlands. And if you fancy the ultimate full-on breathtaking experience of colour; visit in spring.

ATTRACTIONS FOR THE YOUNGER VISITOR AND GROWNUPS ALIKE How Flevoland’s existence came into being and its history, built upon the passionate conviction and determination of some singular minded pioneers, can also be experienced at a number of exclusive attractions. The ‘Orchideeën Hoeve’, a tropical flora and fauna paradise, the astonishing story of the land reclamation project as narrated by the Nieuw Land Heritage Centre or a shopping trip to Batavia Stad Amsterdam Fashion Outlet with its’ beautiful historical architecture, are just some of the exciting places to discover and enjoy for the young and not so young.

NEW A RT A ND A RCHITECTURE Flevoland’s towns and landscape showcases some revolutionary urban developments along with fascinating landscape art. The towns of Lelystad and Almere provide striking and at times astonishing examples of modern architecture by the likes of the internationally lauded Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. The areas architectural ambitions are more than complemented by the numerous impressive landscape artworks you will also come across. Indeed it is doubtful you will meet such a concentration of such works anywhere else in the world.

FLEVOLAND SURROUNDED BY WATER The former Zuiderzee still surrounds the reclaimed land in the form of large lakes and beautiful waterways; absolutely superb for water sports. The waters of the Markermeer and IJsselmeer to the north can still be as rough and angry as the former Zuiderzee’s reputation. However circling the east of Flevoland lies the more tranquil Randmeren or Bordering Lakes. Lelystad offers excellent mooring facilities for river cruises. visitflevoland.nl/groups
