THIS IS BAST FIBRE

2023 PRODUCT BOOKLET

We need to move beyond the “do less harm” sustainability approach to a regenerative model that repairs the planet.
Bast Fibre Tech is a coordinated business ecosystem with a shared passion for natural fibre. With our innovative processing technology, we transform agricultural plants into sero™ technical natural fibre.
Together with our partners, we are using sero™ fibre to create the next generation of regenerative consumer products that go beyond sustainability and start doing good for the planet.
Successful in most climates, bast fibre crops require minimal inputs, work well in crop rotations, and build soil health.
After harvesting, raw fibre is removed intact from plant stems. The woody core, seed, and flower are separated for alternate uses.
Our proprietary processing technology cleans, individualizes, and softens the fibre to meet industry-specific requirements.
By integrating our technical natural fibres, our partners can design out plastic, creating next generation sustainable products.
Products designed for compostability eliminate waste while contributing to the next lifecycle in a soil-to-soil regenerative system.
This is hemp, a member of the bast fibre family of plants, which are packed with dense bundles of fibre in their stems. They regenerate soil, capture large amounts of carbon, and are ideal multipurpose
A cross section of the plant stem, our logo shows the bundles of bast fibre surrounding a hollow core.
It represents our natural starting point on a journey to a zero plastic waste future.
Our fibre enables daily-use products that go beyond waste reduction and work to regenerate our environment from the soil up.

1. Disperse seeds, sow, cultivate
2. Bind together, entwine, interweave
sero™ technical natural fibre is designed to meet the rigorous technical standards required by commercial fabric manufacturing. It is a replacement for synthetic fibre, made from highly efficient, renewable agricultural crops that are some of the best natural sources of fibre.
sero™ enables manufacturers to create consumer products with a circular, soil-to-soil lifecycle.
Beyond plant-based, sero™ is intact plant fibre, ideal for creating next generation sustainable consumer products.

sero™ technical natural fibre is the product of a farm-to-fibre ecosystem built around regenerative agricultural practices, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
Sourcing
Our raw fibre comes from regional partners selected for quality, consistency, and sustainability.
Cleaning
Plant glues are carefully removed, allowing for the separation, cleaning, and brightening of the fibres.
Individualizing
A series of mechanical processes work to individualize, soften, and standardize each fibre.
We monitor each step in our manufacturing process to ensure finished fibre meets customer requirements.
Grows well under reduced and no-till systems. This has been shown to prevent soil erosion and protect soil organic content. Requires less fertilizer, irrigation, and pesticides than many conventional crops. Breaks the cycle of diseases when used in rotation with established crops.
• Encourages a healthy and diverse microbiome.
• The retting process in the harvest of bast fibres stimulates microbial activity, returns nutrients to the soil, and increases soil organic carbon content.
• Shown to support pollinators, such as bees. Hemp produces large amounts of pollen late in the season when supplies are typically decreasing.
• Bast plants are some of the world’s most efficient CO2-to-biomass converters. For example, hemp has been shown to sequester 9-15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare within a 100 day growth cycle.
• High land use efficiency.
• Annual harvest mitigates grower risk and revitalizes local agricultural communities.
• Whole-plant utilization reduces waste while maximizing and diversifying economic returns.
We are building natural capital by working with nature, not against it.
At the bast company, we make our fibre from plants that capture carbon, rebuild soil, and grow with minimal inputs. Our production facilities are located in regions where fabric manufacturing and fibre-plant agriculture overlap, allowing us to operate a ‘grow-local, make-local, sell-local’ business model.
Sustainably managed forests alone cannot meet the demand for plastic fibre alternatives, and we simply cannot sacrifice our ancient forests and intact ecosystems.
Most products containing plastic fibre cannot be recycled and will never break down completely. This results in microplastics accumulating in landfills, oceans, soils, and eventually in our bodies.
So we need non-wood natural solutions on the path to a future with zero plastic waste. Our solution is sourcing fibre from sustainably managed agricultural land, easing the demand on our forests.
We are stewards of soil health at every stage in our process. Bast playing a significant role in the regenerative agriculture
As it breaks down, sero™ fibre replenishes soil, leaving behind beneficial organic matter and contributing to the next lifecycle.

Recycling alone cannot solve the plastic pollution crisis. Our natural fibre enables companies to design products with a circular lifecycle and zero plastic from inception.
