To be in a room with the finest musicians, enjoying memorable performances. For that room to be intimate, atmospheric, welcoming... For it all to be in a beautiful location. To be left with a wonderful memory. These are the four things ENF offers year after year, and 2020 will be no different. Welcome to the 16th East Neuk Festival! Enjoyed it enormously. Excellent programmes and superb performers. A lovely atmosphere. Helpful and friendly staff. Audience comment, 2019

A lot more than a load of rubbish... Is there any more serious environmental issue in our time than ocean pollution? Unwelcome rubbish contaminates food chains and washes up on beaches everywhere, even along Fife’s lovely ‘golden fringe’ of sand. For this year’s Big Project, ENF joins forces with the Scottish Fisheries Museum, Plastic Free Anstruther and the Cellardyke Sea Queen Festivities to respond to the crisis, hopefully do some good, make some music and have a lot of fun.

Here’s the idea: 1

We clean up beaches along the Fife coast.

2

We turn some of the junk into wind and percussion instruments, led by veteran junk-instrument maker and music leader Graeme Leak

3

We put on a show! A massive FANTASTIC PLASTIC PARADE BAND (at least 100 people) performs on 4 JULY and joins Cellardyke’s Sea Queen Parade.

You can find full information and sign up to join in on the website at www.eastneukfestival.com/fppb, contact rufus@eastneukfestival.com or call the office on 033 022 11 093 but here are the key dates:

COMMUNITY BEACH CLEANS We ask community groups families, individuals to sign up to clean beaches on Saturday 9 May and all of the following week.

MAKE & PLAY WORKSHOPS Come along to one or all of Graeme’s workshops at the Scottish Fisheries museum, make instruments and learn some music for the parade. There are workshops on 20 June, 26 June and 27 June all at The Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther.

BIG REHEARSALS You don’t have to make an instrument to join in the parade band. Come to one or both of the BIG REHEARSALS and play with the FANTASTIC PLASTIC PARADE BAND in the parade. There will be plenty of spare instruments available. BIG REHEARSAL 1: SUN 28 JUNE, 2-4pm, East Neuk Centre BIG REHEARSAL 2: SAT 4 JULY 11am-1pm East Neuk Centre PARADE: SAT 4 JULY 1.30-3pm NB Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult at any of these sessions.

WEDNESDAY 1 JULY

CALIDORE QUARTET + YEOL EUM SON 7.30pm, Crail Church £25 / £15 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 110 mins including interval SCHULZ-EVLER Arabesque on “Beautiful Blue Danube” SKRYABIN Valse Op. 38 SIBELIUS Valse Triste, Op. 44 RAVEL Valses nobles et sentimentales DVOŘAK Piano Quintet in A, Op. 81 Pianist, Yeol Eum Son first came to us in 2018, earning a standing ovation. She dreams up appealingly imaginative, quirky programmes, like her waltz sequence here, where familiar favourites surround Skryabin’s glittering little gem. The Calidore Quartet joins her for Dvorak’s magnificent Piano Quintet, a treasure with one of the loveliest openings in all music.

BOHEMIAN WINDS 1 11.30am, Kilrenny Church £17 / £13 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 60 mins MOZART Fantasia KV. 608 REJCHA Quintet in Em, Op. 88 No. 1 JANÁČEK Mládí Belfiato Quintet Hailing from Prague, the Belfiato Quintet truly play as one and make a sound that is glorious. Music of their homeland is their passion and here they feature Rejcha alongside his contemporary, Mozart. They close with Janáček’s vibrant celebration of youth: Mládí. Sponsored by Hedley G Wright

LISTEN CLOSELY 1 2pm, Kilrenny Church £10 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 45 mins Calidore Quartet

The variety of dynamics was amazing but above all, so well communicated to the audience. She brought the music to us by drawing us in. We were very much part of her performance not mere spectators. A truly memorable concert. ENF Audience comment on Yeol Eum Son, 2018

Hearing musicians talking, sharing their ‘performers’ eye view’ of a piece of music and then playing it, can transform your enjoyment of that piece and make something unfamiliar hugely enjoyable. Here Calidore Quartet and Festival Director, Svend McEwan-Brown do just that with Essays by Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw.

"

Calidore Quartet is an ensemble as capable of whipping up storms as enchanting us with breathless moments of utter magic. The Scotsman, 2016

SHAW Entr’acte SCHUMANN Quartet in A, Op. 41 No. 3 BEETHOVEN Quartet in B flat major, Op. 130/133 ‘Grosse Fuge’

Thoughtful and intriguing as ever, Yeol Eum Son offers a sharp juxtaposition of Pärt’s tiny, minimal Variations for the Healing of Arinushka, and Beethoven’s amazing tour-de-force of invention, caprice, drama and majesty (his last work for solo piano, some claim it is his greatest).

"

Went to Crail church for the morning recital given by an extraordinary musician I travelled to see, Yeol Eum Son. It was a highlight for me... Fabulous venue, beautiful weather and intoxicating music. Book the same weather next year! Audience comment, 2018

"

Calidore Quartet scales the heights of the repertoire by playing Beethoven’s astounding thirteenth quartet. Nicknamed the “Grosse Fuge”, it is a breath-taking achievement by players and composer alike. They open with Entr’acte by New York-based Caroline Shaw, an ENF hit a few years ago, with its intriguing and moving music that gradually draws you into its lovely sound-world.

WIDE OPEN 1: OMAR PUENTE SEXTET 7.30pm, Anstruther Town Hall £14 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 110 mins including interval The Cuban violinist describes his latest work as “... a fusion of rhythms from Cuba, Brazil, Africa, Caribbean, Jazz…” Nigel Kennedy called Puente, “a true violin great”. We’re delighted to have him open our Wide Open series of roots, jazz and traditional music.

Benjamin Baker violin Diyang Mei viola Maxim Calver cello Welcome back to three outstanding retreatants who have been working this year with legendary cellist Valentin Erben who coaches them in Mozart’s late, sublime, Divertimento: an hour of unrivalled musical conversation.

LISTEN CLOSELY 2 2pm, Kilrenny Church £10 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 45 mins The Castalian Quartet and Festival Director, Svend McEwan-Brown invite you to listen closely to one of the most remarkable string quartets in a generation. Thomas Ades’ Arcadiana is playful, brilliant and complicated. The quartet and McEwanBrown put it under the microscope for you and then play it.

"

Belfiato Quintet In their second concert, Belfiato Quintet get romantic with a capital “R”. Rejcha was among the earliest Romantics, an adventurous, sparky spirit. Förster was among the last, writing euphonious, melodious music in the mid-20th century, not unlike his contemporary Richard Strauss. To sign off for this year, they have a cheeky miniature by Pärt. Sponsored by Hedley G Wright

PATRON RECEPTION 6pm in Crail: Invitations to follow Every year we host a reception to say thanks to our generous patrons. For more information on our patron scheme, please see the last pages of the brochure.

The real treat of the day came in a brilliant evening recital in Kilrenny Church by the excellent Castalian Quartet. Their unique style – a powerful individuality of sound matched by an instinctive singularity of musical intention – lit up every single moment... A terrific programme; amazing players. An evening of warmth, humour and high spirits from start-to-finish. The words, “last quartet” rarely suggest jokes and jollity, but both Haydn and Brahms offer them in abundance. Beethoven’s Op. 18 No. 2 was among his first quartets, and it is one of his sunniest.

WIDE OPEN 2: JULIAN BLISS SEPTET 7.30pm, Anstruther Town Hall £14 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 120 mins including interval Having wowed us with their Latin moves in 2017, the Julian Bliss Septet are back with a brand new show inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood. Expect classic hits given an exhilarating swing treatment by these superb jazzers.

PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION

WIDE OPEN 3: NORDIC SOUNDS

11.30am, Crail Church £17 / £13 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 60 mins

2pm, St Ayle Church £12 (£5 for 7-17 year olds). Approx. 60 mins

TCHAIKOVSKY The Seasons (excerpts) MUSSORGSKY Pictures at an Exhibition Llŷr Williams piano An all-Russian spectacular! Pictures at an Exhibition is the big beast here – The Great Gate of Kiev, Baba Yaga… Mussorgsky’s ‘paintings’ are vivid and expressive. Williams sets the scene for them with Tchaikovsky’s evocations of the changing year. It is a pleasure to welcome Llŷr Williams back for a pair of recitals this year. “…few could have expected his performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition to be so overwhelming. There wasn’t a finger out of place all evening, and the dramatic plotting was spot on…” The Guardian, 2009

PÄRT/BACH 1 2pm, Crail Church £12 (£5 for 7-17 year olds). Approx. 55 mins PÄRT Pari intervallo BACH Fantasia & Fugue in C minor BWV 537 PÄRT Trivium BACH Sei gegrüßet, Jesu gütig BWV 768 (chorale and variations) PÄRT Annum per annum Tom Wilkinson organ Arvo Pärt has been described as the Bach of our time, and as a deeply-spiritual musician whose music consoles, inspires and delights the widest of listenerships. His writing for organ is contemplative and beautifully still. Organist, Tom Wilkinson contrasts three of his works with major Bach masterpieces, creating a powerful juxtaposition of ancient and modern, minimal and Baroque.

A musical roam across the Nordic lands with David Chadwick and Marit Fält. He plays nyckelharpa, an enchanting traditional Swedish fiddle made to play tunes for dancing, or accompany hymns and songs; she’s an award winning performer and composer, and joins Chadwick on låtmandola (a kind of mandolin) to add extra exotic colour and harmony.

DEATH AND THE MAIDEN 4pm, Kilrenny Church £17 / £13 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 65 mins SHAW Essays SCHUBERT Quartet in Dm, D. 810, ‘Death and the Maiden’ Calidore Quartet With his 14th quartet (completed by the age of 27) Schubert created a new kind of chamber music, immense in size, ideas and in the exceptional stamina it demands of its players. Turbulent, passionate and driven, it makes for a tempestuous experience. The Calidore Quartet was the inspiration for Shaw’s Essays, and it is they who perform this Scottish premiere.

WIDE OPEN 4: TAQASIM ENSEMBLE 4pm, Anstruther Town Hall £12 (£5 for 7-17 year olds). Approx. 70 mins The Taqasim Ensemble is led by Oud master Ahmed Mukhtar and play his music alongside traditional Arabic music. It is an eclectic line-up. Expect western and Middle-Eastern strings, Flamenco guitar and, of course, Oud. For this concert they draw on their most recent album, Visions of Iraq.

WIDE OPEN 6: MARTIN TAYLOR

8pm, Anstruther Town Hall £15 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 100 mins including interval

An hour in the company of Scottish harpist, singer and composer Esther Swift. She’s a traveller and a musical one-off who embraces her music roots – a love of jazz and classical music – and tempers them with inspirations from an eclectic array of world traditions.

PÄRT/BACH 2

Hot jazz-guitar from the master. Martin Taylor is widely considered to be the world’s foremost exponent of solo jazz and fingerstyle guitar-playing. On stage he wears his virtuosity lightly, matching it with an irresistible sense of humour.

7.30pm, Bowhouse £25 / £18 (£5 for 7-17 year olds). Approx. 120 mins including interval PÄRT Spiegel im Spiegel BACH Suite for Solo Cello No. 5, BWV. 1009 PÄRT Kanon Pokajanen The Tallis Scholars Peter Philips director Benjamin Baker violin Oliver Wass harp Diyang Mei viola A major event for ENF: performances of Arvo Pärt’s powerful Kanon Pokajanen (Canon of Repentance) are rare. The Tallis Scholars sing it for the first time here. Pärt’s very personal response to this ancient Orthodox text has a timeless quality. It echoes Byzantine and Russian choral traditions, and uses silence as powerfully as it does the voice. Before the interval, 3 exceptional young musicians play string-music by Pärt and Bach.

Many years ago, when I became involved in the tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church, I came across a text that made a profound impression on me… Since then I have often returned to these verses, slowly and arduously seeking to unfold their meaning… It took over two years to compose the Kanon pokajanen, and the time "we spent together" was extremely enriching. Arvo Pärt, 1998

Castalian Quartet Scottish Chamber Orchestra Daniel Blendulf conductor

Wass is a very special musician – he explores many sides of the Harp, from the spectacular fireworks of Falla and Posse to Britten’s touching gift to his friend, the legendary Welsh harpist, Ossian Ellis. John Cage’s only piece for solo harp is dreamy and quiet - it could almost be by Erik Satie.

Rarely do quartet and orchestra come together, but in our finale this year the Castalian Quartet and SCO join forces for two all-time favourites of string music. Conductor Daniel Blendulf frames them with works by the two ‘composers of the year’ for us here at ENF.

HAMMERKLAVIER 2pm, Crail Church £17 / £13 (£5 for 7-17 year olds) Approx. 80 mins with pause BEETHOVEN Sonata in Fm, Op. 57 'Appassionata' BEETHOVEN Sonata in B flat, Op. 106 'Hammerklavier' Llŷr Williams piano Williams’ longstanding relationship with Beethoven’s 32 Sonatas reached a new high last year with the release of his critically-acclaimed recordings of the complete cycle. His playing is characterised by profound intelligence, wit, honesty and power, and a thrilling tempestuousness. Here he picks out two sonatas just for us.

ENF ENDOWMENT The ENF Endowment is our bid to future-proof ENF and ensure that it continues to bring artists and audience together for special, unique experiences for many years to come. Quite simply, we believe the artists when they tell us that coming to ENF gives them the chance to play repertoire they don’t get to perform elsewhere, with artists they don’t meet elsewhere, or simply to refresh their way of doing things. They tell us we have one of the best, most attentive audiences anywhere. And we believe our audiences when they confirm that ENF’s friendly combination of excellence, internationalism, locale, intimacy and informality is what brings them back year after year. It is what makes us unique and we want it to continue. The ENF Endowment is a separate charity intended to create a fund that can support ENF’s work and enable it face future challenges. It has now reached more than £20,000 and grows every month. Our deep thanks to everyone who has made a gift to it. If you would like to contribute, or maybe think of making a legacy donation to the ENF or the ENF Endowment, please do contact ian@eastneukfestival.
