Are last weekend's results a guide to the Premier League season ahead?

O

NE week into an 18-round season it may seem ridiculous to be making calls on the fortunes of the 20 competing sides in 2017.

opener have gone on to feature in the Premier League finals series, while 68 per cent of women's winners have qualified for the top-five a few months later.

But if recent Premier League basketball history is any kind of guide a large number of the teams who celebrated first-up victories and sit in the top five after one round will be fighting it out for the two premierships at the end of the season.

The numbers show just 15 men's outfits and 16 women's have bounced back from a loss in their season-opener to reach the finals over the past decade.

Since 2007, season-opening performances have provided a fairly strong indication of how a year will pan out for each side.

In the men's competition 70 per cent of the sides who have prevailed in their season-

Last year four of the five sides to reach the men's and women's major rounds started the season with a bang.

Woodville's men were able to recover from a seasonopening loss against Norwood to replace round one winner North Adelaide in the top-five by the end of the season.

While in the women's competition grand finalist West Adelaide started with a loss against North Adelaide.

The Bearcats ousted Sturt – which started 3-0 – in the opening top-five of the season as the Sabres crashed to sixth following a slow finish.

On two occasions – the women in 2013 and men in 2010 – the five winners of season-openers made the finals.

It is a long season, but if history repeats itself sitting 1-0 right now is a lot better than being 0-1.

NORTH Adelaide will look to bounce back from a heartbreaking one-point loss at Woodville when it faces reigning premier Norwood in its home-opener at Hillcrest.

The Rockets are staring at their first 0-2 start since 2012 after failing to take advantage of a bright start against the Warriors at St. Clair.

North raced out of the gates and later reeled Woodville in before the hosts sealed a thrilling win on their final possession.

The Rockets impressed in a 17-point victory over 2016 finalists Woodville on the road last weekend.

Recruit Alex Starling was a standout for North, receiving Player of the Week honours after racking up a gamehigh 32-points along with 19 rebounds.

Returning Aric Miller added 14 points as the Rockets made a solid start.

But last season - when North

won its opening three games before going on to finish seventh – is proof a fast start can count for nothing.

Norwood is coming off a loss to Forestville in its first outing under new coach Kevin Brooks.

The Flames fell away in the second half, but imports Ahmad Starks (22 points and Jerrell Sanders (21 points) showed they will be a formidable force in 2017.

SOUTH Adelaide can improve to 2-0 when it faces rival Southern Tigers in the second round of Premier League action.

The Panthers opened 2017 with victory over Central Districts, overcoming a slow start to ease to a 15-point win.

Teonna Campbell produced a stunning first-up performance, sinking 22 points and recording 12 rebounds, while Danita Goodwin had 15 rebounds along with nine points.

The Tigers – without a number of the faces that helped them to a droughtbreaking premiership last season – were no match for Sturt in a grand final rematch last weekend.

Southern went down by 20 points after trailing by eight at half-time.

New additions Anthony Drmic (17 points), Michael Nwelue (10 points and 13 rebounds)

and Robert Linton (16 points) all showed signs of filling the gaps left by off-season departures, but it is clear the Tigers need time.

South Adelaide pose a threat this weekend after recording a morale-boosting victory over Central Districts in round one.

Shane Boal topped the scoring with 28 points and import point guard Eian Davis recorded 25 points and seven assists in the 35-point win.

WOODVILLE will aim to build on its thrilling one-point victory over North Adelaide last weekend when it visits West Adelaide.

The Warriors held off the Rockets in a frantic finish to start the season on a high.

It was an impressive victory for a side that finished well outside of the top-five last season and on the night trailed by up to 20 points.

The Warriors were lethal from outside the three-point line, making 10 of 21 shots.

They come up against rivals West Adelaide at perhaps the worst time.

The Bearcats slumped to an upset defeat at the hands of Eastern Mavericks in round one.

West struggled to quell the impact of Alex Wilson and will be looking to bounce back strongly against Woodville.

West Adelaide – winners over Eastern Mavericks in round one – face a Woodville outfit coming off a disappointing loss to much-improved North Adelaide.

The Bearcats charged home in the second half against the Mavericks as imports Dee Oldham (29 points and 11 rebounds) and Harold Ridgeway (12 points and nine rebounds) started to find their groove.

Woodville, on the other hand, struggled to match the newlook Rockets.

The Warriors trailed by eight at quarter-time and fell further off the pace as the contest went on.

At one stage the margin blew out to 33 points as North dominated the boards.

Alex Maiorana topscored with 12 points.

Daniel Carlin collected 10 rebounds.

AFTER a stunning round one upset win over West Adelaide the Eastern Mavericks will head north aiming to go 2-0 against Central Districts.

The Mavericks, inspired

by WNBL star Alex Wilson, proved too strong for the Bearcats in a quality round one performance.

Wilson knocked down 32 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists.

The test for the Mavericks now is going on the road and stringing together consecutive wins.

Eastern should be confident ahead of facing a Lions side coming off a 15-point loss to South Adelaide.

Central started well but its young squad struggled to maintain the level needed for four quarters.

Alisha Carlin was her usual self for the Lions, draining 18 points.

The two sides combined for just four victories as they occupied the bottom-two spots on the ladder last year, and they started the new season on a low note.

The Lions were outplayed by South Adelaide – who finished above only Central and Eastern in 2016 – in a 105-70 loss at Marion.

Eastern led West Adelaide by nine points early in the third quarter before the Bearcats

came home strong to seal an opening-round victory.

There were positives for the Mavericks, with their bench players combining to score 39 of 73 points.

Lachlan Barker (17 points) and Devon McGee (14) led the charge.

Central was outgunned by South Adelaide on the road.

The Lions shot just 28 per cent from the field and drained one three-pointer on 25 shots.

TWO sides that fought it out in the middle of the table last season will go head-to-head when Forestville hosts Sturt.

Pleasingly for Sturt fans and officials it was a well-rounded team effort that got the Sabres over the line.

The Eagles finished clear of the Sabres in fifth last season but started 2017 with a loss to Norwood.

Hannah Richards (11 points and five rebounds), Hannah Stewart (11 points) and Amy Shaw (10 points and five rebounds) all featured heavily.

Sturt, which has the task of closing the gap on Forestville and the other top-five sides from 2016, started well in edging the Southern Tigers.

They can build on that result against a Forestville side coming off an impressive win of its own after downing perennial contenders Norwood.

Carter and Claybrin McMatch each impressed with 13 points.

Forestville showed it will again be around the mark by disposing of Norwood on the road.

The Eagles trailed by 11 at half-time before finishing strongly.

The Sabres shot well (46 per cent from the field) and outmuscled Southern under the basket on its way to a 20-point win.

Majok Deng inspired Forestville, scoring 28 points and pulling down 15 rebounds in a solid first-up appearance.

SABRES STUN TIGERS IN EPIC STURT 61 SOUTHERN TIGERS 59 A NAIL-BITING match saw Sturt edge past Southern on the opening night of the 2017 Premier League season, running away victors 61 to 59.

Foul trouble ultimately proved decisive for the away team as Sturt’s players were able to knock down their shots at the charity strike when it counted.

The clubs traded buckets for the majority of the match before the home side were able to muster a nine-point lead early in the second half.

Amy Shaw and Hannah Richards were a tall order for the Southern defence as the Sturt duo peppered the basket with numerous post moves underneath the basket.

Tracy York’s team was able to narrow the margin through the contribution of Molly McKendrick and Tara Dodson, tying the game with just minutes left on the clock.

Sarah Elsworthy was also crucial for the Sabres. Another season with the Adelaide Lightning showed certain dividends as the WNBL

Rookie of The Year runner-up was able to guide her team offensively during the final stages of the match.

In a game that could have gone either way Sturt were able to limit the Tigers from a threatening come-back.

Southern will come up against South Adelaide at Morphett Vale next week while Sturt will meet Forestville away from home.

FLAMES START DEFENCE WITH WIN NORWOOD 68 FORESTVILLE 61 After an even start in the first Premier League game at ARC Campbelltown, unsteady ball handling plagued Forestville at the end of the first quarter and the beginning minutes of the 2nd against the historically talented home side, Norwood Flames. Consistent defence from both ends kept the game close with Norwood capitalising from controlling possession time and good shot choices. With a late surge, the Flames turned opportunistic defence to a

Norwood held firm to a 50-41 lead as the 3rd quarter came to a close. The heart was there for Forestville but the collective play lacked discipline and control. Norwood only invited a lead change, but turnovers betrayed Forestville’s efforts.

Outside shooting from Samantha Defranscesco, the only other Eagle to score in double figures (14) besides the Lightning leader, provided enough Eagles support to keep

it within 7 with 4 minutes to go.

Just when the window opened for Forestville, poor free throw shooting shut the comeback down unceremoniously. Even a mis-timed foul from beyond the arc by Norwood didn’t see the Eagles soar, missing all three from line. So what was potentially a one point game turned a 4 point deficit to 7 as Jess Good made a fitting steal as the buzzer went off.

STURT CLAIMS GF REVENGE STURT SABRES 84 SOUTHERN TIGERS 64 STURT showed why they will be a title contender on Saturday evening as they defeated Southern 84-64.

The 2016 premiers matched it with the Sabres for the majority of the match but Sturt’s resilience shone through as some of their younger players led the way for the basketball club.

Jacob Rigoni dropped 15 points while 17-year-old Ben Carter provided valuable minutes for the home side as he also scored 13 points.

The Tigers started the night off how they would have liked Robert Linton had eight points alone in the first minutes of the game before Sturt were able to fight their way back into the match.

It wasn’t until Southern’s Anthony Drmic was ejected at three quarter time that Sturt were able to solidify their lead.

They increased their margin to double figures and were able to hold off Southern’s offence.

The noticeable absence of Adelaide 36er’s captain Mitch

Creek was evident while import Michael Nwelue found his rhythm too late in the match to have any damaging effect for the Tigers.

Big man Claybrin McMath and versatile forward Tim Klaosen steadied Sturt’s defence late in the night to ensure that the likes of Hamish Staude and Craig Catford were not able to find open shots as the Sabres got off to the perfect start.

Zachary Lovell had the hosts off to a brilliant start, burying an early triple to put his team on the front foot. The lead did not last though, as Oldham (29 points, 11 rebounds), laid down a substantial dunk and a three in quick succession to take his side to a 21-14

An impressive alley-oop finished by Oldham highlighted his presence, Eastern were beginning to show signs of consistency, but Lucas Valk (14 points) changed the outcome of the match with some brilliant three point shooting in the all-important championship quarter. The hosts desperately required a hero to get anything valuable from this game, and Lachlan Barker’s

four triples in the fourth term came close to influencing the result. But a lack of communication, coupled with untimely inexperience, proved to be the downfall of the Mt Barker outfit. A layup and one for Harold Ridgeway (12 points) sealed and stamped the result, with the favoured Bearcats proving too strong for a valiant Mavericks side, who showed plenty of fight.

Central Districts looked lively early, moving the ball with good pace but had too many errant passes to create any fluency.

At the other end of the court, new recruit Eian Davis, wowed the crowd with equal parts skill and showmanship- collecting the opening 7 points for South.

However, the Panthers were able to wrestle back the ascendency again through Davis and Boal, culminating in an alley-oop from Davis that

sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Boal (game-high 28 pts) and Davis (25 pts) were fantastic for South, stepping up when the game was in the balance early.

Davis’ game would have been especially pleasing for Al Green, as whilst he has the ability to do it all, he should be lauded for knowing when to give it off to his teammates.
