Celebrating 13 years of Basingstoke Festival

Get ready to kick-off your summer as Basingstoke Festival returns for its 13th year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary the creation of the council.

This year we are celebrating everything that makes our borough so special - heritage, arts, culture, community and of course you - our fantastic audiences!

As always, we hope that this year’s programme will inspire, delight and encourage new audiences as well as existing festival goers to experience an array of street theatre, outdoor arts, circus, dance and music.

Fancy a historical ramble with the Basingstoke Heritage Society? Or perhaps you would like to channel your inner caveman and watch the incredible Motionhouse as they perform Henge. We like to think we’ve got something for all ages – from reminiscing about tea with Trigger’s Teabreak to journeying through time with local artist Sarah Thomas-Lane. Joli Vyann will even have you pondering the very nature of time itself as they dance on a seven-metre-high hourglass in their show, Timeless.

This year, we’re especially excited to extend the festival beyond the town centre. Take a trip out to some of the more rural parts of the borough and enjoy art in the most unusual of places. Use this guide to explore

what the whole borough has to offer for the duration of the festival.

We are delighted to be working once again in partnership with Village Hotel Basingstoke. Make sure you visit them in Basing View, just a short walk over the bridge from Eastrop Park. There is a pool, gym, 153

bedrooms, a buzzing pub and grill with a big screen for live sport as well as a V-Works co-working space. We are also delighted to be bringing you the Festival Hub again working in partnership with Festival Place.

Every effort is made to ensure the show locations and timings are correct within this brochure and on our website however please do check our Facebook Page for any last minute changes. All Basingstoke Festival shows are relaxed performances which means you can move around as needed.

BSL interpreters

For the first time, we will have BSL interpreters on each Saturday throughout the festival. Look at page six to see which route to follow to see the shows with BSL interpreters present.

Join the parade at Market Place as it moves up Church Street through the Top of the Town making its way down to the Amphitheatre at Festival Place.

Join Sarah and a host of performers as local community organisations, charities, schools and colleges join forces to take you back in time to the Basingstoke of the past.

Once the parade arrives at the Amphitheatre, internationally acclaimed Motionhouse will perform their joyous and exhilarating, Henge. Using dynamic parkour, pure athleticism, and fearless physicality, all set to the pounding beat of slap-skin drummers, Henge an awe-inspiring mix of circus and dance that pushes the limits.

Following Motionhouse, catch Covent Garden’s favourite street performers, Fit Up Productions with their show Risky Business! Jugglers from opposite sides of the world come together to create a circus show full of silly banter and spectacular tricks.

Join Jellyfish Theatre for the second year running at Basingstoke Festival.

Following the success of Wagon of Dreams last year, they are back with more inclusive storytelling fun for children.

Come and meet the dragon whisperer and fantastical dragons who live in the Dragon Wagon. A playful, inventive family show about friendship, food and dragons, set on a retro caravan. Packed with puppetry, music and laughter.

Tape That is a playful exploration of the world we live in. When challenges present themselves, just how many problems can be fixed with a few rolls of duct tape?

Watch this charming, light-hearted, non-verbal acrobatic duet as two performers construct a visual world using colourful tape, object manipulation and partner acrobatics. A simple roll of tape transforms from DJ decks to a spyglass and is stretched to create physical barriers and obstacles for the performers to navigate.

EXPLORER

This year, Basingstoke Festival is partnering with Deaf Explorer to showcase new works by two emerging artists. Through this collaboration, we aim to enrich our festival with diverse and innovative creations. Audience members are invited to offer feedback to the artists at the end of the shows to help inform the development of the pieces. Join us in celebrating the creativity and resilience of these artists as they unveil their new work right here in Basingstoke.

Irish Deaf performance artist and actor Paula Clarke, in collaboration with hearing writer and actor Charis McRoberts, is delighted to present The Wee Folk. This new accessible piece of outdoor theatre introduces children and families to a magical world of myth and legend. Join spirits of the forest Fiadh and Sion on an exciting adventure as they play tricks and tell tales about the wee folk of the wilderness. Knock, knock – who’s there? Whisper for a wish and they may grant it but

continue to pull down the trees and litter our earth and they may come after you!

From an exciting new company who explore social issues through the thrills and spills of live performance, this colourful and uplifting show is not to be missed.

Join Joe Garbett Dance as they return to the Basingstoke Festival following their previous tennis table-inspired show Doubles. Help two happy hikers and dive into a lively dance adventure, where tents can dance and massive maps swamp the land. Filled with magical contact work and silly slapstick tricks, this playful piece invites you to follow your nose into a wriggly, giggly world.

Help Orchestra of Objects put together a new musical playground.

The Sound Garden is an installation of uniquely invented musical instruments - tooting, whistling, plinking, and parping gizmos inspired by a wasteland of unwanted industrial objects.

Orchestra of Objects offers a creative mix of fun to put smiles on faces and melodies in minds no matter what your age or musical experience. Everyone is welcome to explore making sounds, melodies and grooves.

Join Basingstoke’s local favourite environmentalist and storyteller Junk Jodie as she brings to life her new show Tree-TASTIC. Journey through the Amazon rainforest with her new friend Jenny Jaguar. Learn how we can protect the trees and preserve the animals’ homes, as well as the benefits that the Amazon rainforest has for the planet. This interactive storytelling show includes songs, dancing, and is designed to inspire you to create toys from junk and bring them to life with your imagination. It’s going to be Tree-TASTIC!

Join local artist Louise Hight for a fun-filled workshop to create a 3D dance sculpture. Have fun dressing the dancer by adding colourful ribbons to make it come alive. Then, get ready to unleash your inner artist and design your very own dance-themed masterpiece to take home! Local artist Louise Hight brings over 20 years of experience teaching art and design. With a passion for creativity, art and wellbeing, Louise loves sharing her skills and creating art with the community.

SPLAT! is a family friendly physical comedy about art. Two artists, one neat the other messy, attempt to cover the history of art with chaotic consequences. The two characters attempt to complete their masterpieces whilst antagonising each other in the process. They take a journey through the history of visual art, experiencing the techniques of the great masters and movements before eventually realising that to achieve anything they must embrace their opposites and work together.

The show explores themes of collaboration, play, dedication, spontaneity and letting go. The show features no language and is accessible for deaf audiences.

Familie is a compelling show that is both childishly delightful and powerfully symbolic. This highly choreographed piece syncopates to a driving industrial ambient soundtrack. The slinkies journey through the highs and lows of being a family, crescendoing to a pulsating finale. The show continues to mesmerise audiences around the world - a recent highlight being Tao Yuan Summer Children Festival in Taiwan in front of 5,000 people!

Serving Sounds is a multi-sensory sound installation that creates connection through music – a bar that serves bass rather than beer. The installation is an interactive work, playful and joyful.

You’ll find the ordinary items you’d usually expect to find, such as glasses, a lemon, the odd bit of change but at this bar, these items when touched will create a groove, a sound, strings, a snare, maybe a guitar, or synths if you like. It’s a dance party like no other, accept this one is on the street right in front of you.

Celebrating 20 years in Basingstoke, RB Music work as part of BMI to establish more opportunities for grass roots musicians to perform, as well as mentoring and support to developing acts.

Alongside the live performance is Anvil Arts’ ever popular Musication Station, inviting everyone to pick up an instrument and discover their creativity. Suitable for all ages and abilities, with professional musicians on hand to help you explore and experiment with a range of acoustic and instruments.

LIVE ART EXPERIENCE WITH EMILY ROSE

Visual Deaf Artist Emily Rose is coming to Basingstoke Festival to present a Live Art Experience engaging with the audience, playing with the art materials, and responding to sounds (music), visuals and texture. Welcoming the audience to join in the fun!

WHERE: Outside the Willis Museum, Market Place

A festival favourite returns again for 2024. Join local historian Debbie Reavell, from the Basingstoke Heritage Society, as she leads a historic walking tour through Basingstoke town centre.

Pop the dates in your diary for free family fun during the school holidays running across the Top of the Town and War Memorial Park from Love Basingstoke. Have a go at a new sporting activity, take part in some arts and crafts or try something totally different.
