A HERO’S WELCOME THOUSANDS of residents joined schools, businesses and veterans from across Basildon to celebrate the homecoming of the Anglian Regiment in November.

Marching to celebrate the return of the regiment following their fourth and final tour of Afghanistan, thousands lined the town centre to show their support.

Cllr Tony, Ball, leader of Basildon Council said: “The homecoming event was a truly historic one for the town and one which will be remembered for many years.”

“It was an incredibly emotional day, tinged with sadness at the losses that the regiment has suffered.

But is also one which fills me with pride, and it was incredible to see so many people take time out to visit the town centre and show their support.”

Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Basildon Council, Cllr Geoff Williams added: “The Regiment’s homecoming to Basildon was a stirring event; they did us proud, and I think the thousands of folk in the Town Centre showed how much the Basildon community appreciates what our armed forces do for us. I found the whole event quite moving.”

BIG SWITCH ON SUCCESS

Basildon Mayor Mo Larkin and stars on stage at the Big Switch On

THOUSANDS of residents braved the weather at the end of November to enjoy a day of fun and festivities at the years Basildon BIG Switch On. Market stalls, fun fair rides, street entertainment and much more was on offer throughout the day, whilst a host of local entertainers joined BBC Essex breakfast host Ray Clark for a special roadshow running throughout the afternoon.

The day culminated with TOWIE stars Cara Kilbey and Billi Mucklow joining the Mayor of Basildon, Cllr Mo Larkin, and the stars of the Towngate Pan to flick the switch and light up the town.

Mayor’s Message from Cllr Mo Larkin Mayor of Basildon Borough Council What an eventful year we’ve had in 2012!

From the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the fantastic Olympic and Paralympic Games and now, just a few weeks ago, The Royal Anglian Regiment Homecoming March.

I was absolutely delighted and proud to join thousands of residents who came out to support over 300 troops and veterans as they marched through Basildon Town Centre, having just completed their fourth and final tour of duty in Afghanistan.

As the Mayor of Basildon and on the behalf of the civilian community, I signed a military covenant pledging mutual support between the Armed Forces, veterans and the wider community.

This covenant was also signed by Lieutenant Colonel Mick Aston MC of The Royal Anglian Regiment on behalf of the Armed Forces, and the Leader of the Council, Cllr Tony Ball, on behalf of the Basildon Renaissance Partnership.

These soldiers, past and present, are an inspiration to us Mayor Larkin at the Covenant signing all. (More about the homecoming march is on the front page and page 4 of this edition of the Borough Diary). this year’s pantomine at the Towngate Theatre. PITSEA REGENERATION SET TO START AS POOL CLOSES THE major redevelopment of Pitsea town centre is set to start following the closure of Pitsea swimming pool.

The transformation of the area will centre on a 75,000 square foot Morrison’s superstore, a new and improved 100 stall market, refurbished office blocks and new shops, along with improved public areas and landscaping.

The plans will create over 500 new jobs and safeguard many more.

Although Pitsea pool has closed, a shuttle bus to the Basildon Sporting Village and Wickford pool has been put in place with Basildon District Volunteer Carers (BDVC) as part of a detailed customer relocation strategy.

It runs five days a week with a special service running on Wednesdays for the over 50s.

Swimming lessons are being re-provided at Wickford pool and the Basildon Sporting Village and from January, it is intended that swimming lessons will also be available at the Basildon Lower Academy.

Cllr Malcolm Buckley, cabinet member for regeneration said: “This redevelopment will

create hundreds of jobs and safeguard hundreds more for a local community that has higher than average unemployment levels.”

Cllr Kevin Blake, cabinet member for leisure and arts, added: “Our relocation plans have been completed which I believe will minimise the disruption to the users of the pool when it closes.

I am obviously sad to see the pool close, but it will enable the important regeneration of the town to start that will create hundreds of jobs, add vitality and bring investment into Pitsea town centre.”

State-of-the-art swimming facilities at the Sporting Village

COUNCIL’S CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH BASILDON Council has “met the challenges of the current financial climate”, according to the Audit Commission.

The Audit Commission, appointed as the council’s external auditor, issued a report that stated the council’s accounts were of a “high standard”.

The auditor also noted the council had sound arrangements to secure economy, efficiency and effectiveness in its use of resources.

The feedback has been welcomed by the council as public finances continue to face ever increasing scrutiny.

Cllr Stuart Sullivan, cabinet member for resources, said: “This clean bill of health for our accounts illustrates how seriously we’ve taken the challenge to improve our efficiency across the organisation.

“There has never been a more important time to deliver value for money for local tax payers and this report proves that we are doing that.

“It also recognises that significant savings have been made to date and we will endeavour to continue along the same path in 2013/14.”

Bala Mahendran, chief executive of Basildon Council, added: “Delivering value for money is essential if we are to deliver on our promise of creating opportunity for local people. This report confirms we are doing that and is very good news.

“Overall, I am very pleased with the feedback. I would like to take this opportunity to echo the Auditor’s comments by thanking finance staff and senior management and the Audit and Risk Committee for their hard work in assisting with this audit.”

Locations marked with a G can also be used for the disposal of green waste.

The Crunch Service is not suitable for paints, oils or other waste liquids.

Artists impressions of the Basildon Town Centre College

EXCITING plans for a £30 million new college building in the heart of Basildon have been submitted to Basildon Council by South Essex College, with local students, staff and businesses coming out in support of the plans.

The move is part of the college’s strategy to relocate all of its campuses into the town centre, and is part of wider regeneration plans that will see the market relocate to St. Martin’s Square and a direct link built from the college to the train station.

If the application is approved, the aim would be to open the new college by September 2015 which could cater for up to 2000 students, over double the current number in Basildon.

David Roskilly, Cycles UK, based in Market Square said: “The relocated college could help Cycles UK as lots more people on our

doorstep would know about us, which would be good for business.

Our clientele would appreciate the improved environment so if the proposed new college looks and feels better, then it has got to be a good thing.”

Deputy chief executive of South Essex College, Anthony McGarel, said: “This move is about raising the expectations of young people and being visible enough in the town centre that they can see, and get really excited about, what their future could be.”

Cllr Malcolm Buckley, cabinet member for regeneration, added: “This would be a vital catalyst to help us with our ambitious plans to regenerate Basildon town centre.

“This would improve the learning experience and drive up standards for young people and also create a vibrant new space in the town centre that will boost the local economy.”

BUSINESSES AND STUDENTS BACK PLANS FOR COLLEGE MOVE WITH an estimated increase of £1.2m spending in Basildon, the creation of indirect jobs, plus improved security in the town centre, a number of Basildon business leaders have expressed their support for the redevelopment as a catalyst for wider regeneration in the town centre.

Denise Rossiter, chief executive at Essex Chambers of Commerce commented: “We are pleased to support the plans.

“Its location will greatly aid the regeneration of the town centre and it will give young people and the wider community access to state of the art educational facilities providing

a curriculum that meets the needs of students and businesses.”

Paul Rolison, chief executive of YellowSpring plc said: “This move has many benefits including: improved access for students; greater commercial activity within the town centre from students and staff presence; continued enhancement of the town centre environment; and improvement in the attractiveness of Basildon for students and employers.”

Students have also backed the plans with Ethan Thomas, 18, a public services student from Stanford-le-Hope, saying: “Moving the

Basildon Campus into the town centre seems like a better idea as transport here is not convenient.

“At the moment we have to wait ten minutes to catch a bus into the town centre as it is quite a trek to the shops or the nearest cash machine.”

Melanie Westwood, 47 an NVQ 3 hairdressing student from Billericay, said: “It will be easily accessed for youngsters who don’t drive as at the moment it is a long walk for most people.

It will also be nice to be in a modern building and should influence people to come into education.”

‘GET RECYCLING’ COMPETITION BASILDON Council has launched a recycling competition aimed at highlighting the everyday materials people can recycle, and encouraging residents to get recycling.

The competition is part of a drive to up the recycling rate to 55% by April 2013.

Residents are being asked to tweet or post to Facebook photos of them recycling a certain item to be entered into a prize draw to win a £25 High Street voucher.

Council officers will also be visiting a road within the borough each week – on recycling day. A resident will then be chosen at random within that road – and if they have the item of the week in their

recycling, they will win a voucher.

Each week the item will change and the competition will run until Christmas.

Cllr John Dornan, cabinet member for environment said: “Our residents have done fantastically well over recent years and we now recycle well over 50% of all our household waste. However we can always do more and this competition is aimed at highlighting everyday items that can be recycled.

“We want everyone to get recycling – whether they have never recycled before, or whether they start to recycle something they were previously unaware they could recycle.”

Estimated that up to twelve thousand people attended the event, the march was the first time the regiment have exercised their right to march, after being granted the ‘Freedom of the Borough’ in 2011.

Major Guy Foden, Officer Commanding C (Essex) Company said: “It was great to see the support of the people of Basildon, which is really appreciated by our soldiers and their families.

“We have been all over East Anglia carrying out homecoming parades and it is particularly meaningful for C (Essex) Company to receive a uniquely Essex reception in Basildon.

“Afghanistan was a challenging tour but we made huge strides delivering security and transferring responsibility to Afghan security forces. It was heartening that, when I had a final meeting with village elders at the end of our six month tour, they thanked us for our work to prevent insurgents from bringing violence into their communities.”

The Borough Diary asked members of the crowd waiting to watch the Royal Anglian Regiment march through Basildon what they thought of the occasion.

Pat Rose, 82, of Huntsmead, Billericay, said: “It’s a Pat Rose

great honour and I’m so proud of all the forces and to be able to march with the eagle is wonderful.

“My daughter and grand-daughter are both in the armed forces so this is a particularly special event to witness.”

Lewis Roberts, 27, of Ravendale, Kingswood, said: (Wearing scouts uniform) It’s very important that as many people as possible come Lewis Roberts out to support the troops.

“As a scout I recognise the importance of public service and the good example these soldiers can set.”

Kristina Penny, 33, of Farm Road, Canvey, said: (face painted) “I’ve come here today to support my younger brother who is marching Kristina Penny with the Anglians.

“I think it’s great that the parade is coming through Basildon and my children can be here to wave flags in support of their uncle.”

YOUNG PEOPLE’S ALCOHOL FORUM

YOUNG people across the borough will learn more about the negative effects of alcohol next month as part of the Basildon Young People’s Alcohol Conference.

The Basildon Community Safety Partnership (CSP) has invited youngsters aged 13 to 14 from local schools to attend the interactive conference which will include real life scenarios from the emergency services, workshops relating to health effects, personal safety, risky

behaviours, alcohol content and licensing.

There will also be the opportunity for the young people to visit the SOS bus and the community wheels vehicle safety simulator and use their creative skills to design a recipe for a mocktail (non alcoholic cocktail).

Young people will also be asked to identify alcohol related issues in their local area and put together some proposals on how they can tackle the problems. There will be a small amount of funding for the

groups to bid for so that they can deliver their projects over the next year.

Cllr Malcolm Buckley, cabinet member with responsibility for community safety, said: “There are a small but significant number of young people who are drinking harmfully, putting both themselves and others at risk.

“This conference will allow the CSP to take a proactive approach in informing our young people about the dangers of alcohol.”

YOUNGSTERS LEARN HOW TO BE GOOD CITIZENS

LOCAL youngsters have been taking part in a five-week programme to teach them how to become good neighbours.

The Junior Warden Scheme, run by Basildon Council’s community wardens, is currently taking place in Briscoe School and Fairhouse School. Wardens are spending one afternoon a week working with ten-year-olds to teach them about anti-

social behaviour, littering, responsible dog ownership and fire safety.

Cheryl Brown, principal neighbourhood nuisance officer, said: “The children have been really receptive to these sessions and have been learning about some really important issues such as what makes a good member of the community, what anti-social behaviour is and the impact it has on the community.

“We’ve also had some excellent guest speakers from Essex Fire and Rescue Service and the graffiti and recycling teams to talk to the pupils about different issues. It’s really encouraging to see the children taking an interest in becoming good citizens.”

The community wardens will start the programme in three more local schools in the New Year.

Improvements made in St Martin’s ward SIX months in to the St Martin’s Community Safety Action Zone (CSAZ) and there have already been a number of improvements to the area.

Following concerns raised by residents at the monthly street meetings and regular estate walkabouts, the Basildon Community Safety Partnership (CSP) has carried out a number of projects to address local issues.

Offenders carrying out unpaid community work through the Community Payback project have been cutting back some of the shrubbery and picking up litter in the area.

The council’s cleansing team has also cut back and tidied up the bushes in the area as well as re-painted the bollards and posts by Stacey’s Corner parade of shops.

In addition, leaks in the canopy were repaired and the paving underneath were jet washed.

The CSP also ran a Halloween Activity afternoon for youngsters to keep them entertained during the school holiday and make them aware of what anti-social behaviour is and what could happen if they commit it.

One concern highlighted by residents was that the bench opposite the post office at Stacey’s Corner shops was being used by drug dealers as a place to meet. Basildon Council has now removed the bench.

Residents also reported that the public phone boxes outside the parade of shops were being used to organise drug deals. A bar on incoming calls has now been put in place so that officers can monitor the situation.

• If you’re going on holiday over the festive period, ask a friend, relative or neighbour to keep an eye on your house.

• Don’t leave presents in full view on the back seat when out shopping. These can be tempting to thieves. Lock them away out of sight in the boot.

• Never leave your keys in the ignition whilst your vehicle is unattended, even for a few minutes whilst defrosting the windows.

• NEVER drink and drive

• Make sure all valuable property is marked. You can get a property marking kit from your local police station • Register bike frame numbers, mobile phone IMEI numbers and other identifying details on ‘Immobilise’ - the free, national property registration scheme (www.immobilise.com) • Make it difficult for criminals to operate - do not buy stolen property

BASILDON Council has hailed a major European conference, which it hosted, as a major success.

As a founder member of the European New Towns and Pilot Cities Platform (ENTP), Basildon Council hosted the annual general assembly in Basildon in October.

Cllr Tony Ball, leader of Basildon Council and vice president of the ENTP, said: “Myself and the council’s chief executive Bala Mahendran have been absolutely delighted with the general assembly and there are a number of lessons we will take away from the conference.

“We were particularly interested to exchange ideas on how best to go about developing trade links with

nations such as India and China where Basildon has particular interest.

“Secondly, the key to new towns creating opportunity is effective partnership between public and private sectors that have the community at their heart.

“Thirdly, the importance of education and skills opportunities for the local economy.

Bala Mahendran, the council’s chief executive, added: “Clearly Basildon has a huge amount to share as well as learn from the other member cities and towns.

It was also very clear when speaking to delegates that in Basildon we punch above our weight. I think we have a lot to be proud of.”

ANTI HATE CRIME PROJECT LAUNCHED

BASILDON borough has been commended crime head on as it launched its antihate crime campaign with a hate crime awareness conference.

The September conference was attended by nearly 100 local agency representatives including the police, NHS, fire service, neighbouring councils, businesses, community organisations as well as local residents, with the aim of producing a multi- agency approach to tackling hate crime in the borough.

It was also used to launch the borough’s own third party reporting sites which allows residents to report instances of hate crime without having to go directly to the police.

Keynote speaker, Maqsood Ahmad, director for inclusion and equalities at NHS Midland and East, and ex-advisor to the Home Secretary during the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, commended the council for putting hate crime on the local agenda something, he said, many authorities are not doing: “Hate crime is not just about race as disabled, gay and transgendered people are all subjected to it.

“Not many authorities are putting it on the agenda so well done to Basildon Council for proactively tackling hate crime before it becomes a big problem in the borough.”

Cabinet member for community, Cllr Terri Sargent, also attended the conference. She said: “Thanks to the work of Basildon Council and its partners, the borough’s hate crime figures are comparable with national figures, however we can not become complacent.”

KENT VIEW ROAD SALE HALTED Basildon Council is reviewing the sale of Kent View Road recreation ground as it considers a detailed business plan produced by a group of local residents.

Vange Community Group have made a proposal to lease the recreation ground and associated buildings and turn it into a minisports area.

The plans are now being scrutinised by council officers to ensure they can be delivered.

Cllr Tony Ball, leader of the council, said: “These proposals would give the local

The golf course will be marketed through a single tender process with separate lots – this will allow bidders to tender for the operation of the Golf Course on its own, for the second lot for an associated development option on its own, or for both together.

“Any financial viability business models for the separate lots will be heavily scrutinised and evaluated as part of the procurement process.”

CHRISTMAS RECYCLING COLLECTIONS IT MAY be a little early for mince pies and tinsel but it is never too soon to be thinking about all the extra recycling material Christmas can bring.

In the coming weeks Basildon Council will be sending out leaflets to all households across the borough with useful information about recycling collections in the run up to, and following Christmas.

Basildon Council will keep running all recycling services throughout the Christmas period and collection crews will be working hard to keep disruptions to a minimum.

This will give every household the opportunity to recycle more than ever.

The leaflet will also contain information about how collections will change following bank holidays, and a collection calendar for 2013.

The leaflets will be delivered over a four-week period, which will make sure everyone has them well in advance.

If you have not received your leaflet by December 14 please email recycling@basildon.gov.uk and one will be sent to you.

The leaflets also contain textile stickers so you can place all of your old clothes and shoes in a pink bag, affix a textile sticker and place this out for collection, to make sure your textiles are recycled.

COUNCIL AWARDS £8,800 GRANTS TO LOCAL GROUPS BASILDON Council has awarded £8,800 to five community groups as part of its grants programme.

The programme awards up to £2,000 to charities and voluntary groups in the borough who deliver projects that benefit residents.

Made up of volunteers, the Basildon Operatic Society was awarded £2,000 to put on a performance of their version of the hit film and musical, Annie, and to help in its drive to encourage more residents to take up volunteering.

The Basildon, Wickford and Billericay Gang Show was awarded £2,000 to encourage young people from across the whole borough to get involved in the performing arts, while the Basildon District Scout

Association was awarded £2,000 to help improve its kitchen facilities to benefit all users of their Clayburn Circle Headquarters.

The Berry Boy’s Boxing Club was also awarded £2,000 to purchase new equipment to encourage more mixed membership, and Essex Media Workshop was awarded £800 to assist it in providing training for people with disabilities.

Cabinet member for community services, Cllr Terri Sargent, said: “As the council seeks to create opportunity for local people, our annual grants programme makes such a positive contribution in helping our voluntary sector groups provide worthwhile volunteering opportunities for residents of all

ages and abilities.

“The funding also helps to support local organisations provide cultural and educational activities for our residents to explore during their free time.”

There is one more round in 2012/13 financial year for charitable community and voluntary groups to apply for grants of up to £2,000. The closing date for applications is Friday 11 January 2013.

Police & Crime Commissioners election result NICHOLAS Kenneth Alston has been elected as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex.

As no candidate received more than half of all the first preference votes cast in the 15 November election, the counting of the second preference votes was also held.

Nick Alston received a total of 62,350 votes while

Mick Thwaites , who remained in the contest after the count of the first perference votes, received a total of 58,664 votes.

Police and Crime Commissioners are accountable for how crime is tackled, aiming to cut crime and deliver an effective and efficient police service within their police area.

A RECENT consultation asking Pitsea residents what they think should be the priorities for the area has had a “fantastic response”.

Supported by Basildon Council and Basildon, Billericay and Wickford Council for Voluntary Services (BBWCVS), the survey was designed by the Heart of Pitsea Big Local steering group and were distributed to all local households and businesses in the area. The results will now be used to help identify how to spend the £1m Big Lottery money awarded to the area, which is situated within the boundary of Ashlyns, Rectory Road, Pitsea Road and High Road, Pitsea.

Cabinet member for community services, Cllr Terri Sargent, said: “There has been a fantastic response rate to the questionnaires sent to Pitsea residents in October, which shows that locals are really passionate about ensuring the funding is spent on projects that benefit the entire community.”

Chris Evans, Chief Officer of BBWCVS, said: “The £1m funding will be used on projects that deliver a long term benefit to the Pitsea area, so it is important that this time has been taken to ask residents how this funding can make the greatest impact.”

The new policy to offer tenants an introductory tenancy followed by a flexible tenancy will be rolled out from 1st April 2013 and will not affect current tenants or those eligible for sheltered accommodation.

Supported by Basildon Council, Basildon Twinning Association helps groups, organisations, families and individuals exchange ideas, arranges visits and competitions with people from across the three towns.

In 2012 the association helped organise and fund groups from New Campus College to attend a football tournament in Germany, members of the French Circle to visit Meaux and invited members of the Basildon Youth Council met with visiting

students from Heiligenhaus.

In July, sports stars from Basildon competed in an International Superstars event at The Sporting Village against visiting sports personalities from both Meaux and Heiligenhaus.

COUNTDOWN TO PANTO! THE countdown to Christmas is well underway with theatres across the country gearing up for pantomime season.

NEW COUNCIL TAX SUPPORT SCHEME MAJOR changes to council tax support are to be bought in from April, and the cabinet member in charge is encouraging residents to be prepared.

The Government is cutting £18 billion from the welfare budget and local councils are being handed responsibility for council tax benefit but with 12% less funding.

These costs have to be passed onto those receiving council tax benefit, but pensioners must not suffer any loss which means those affected will lose more than 12% of their benefit.

The average loss is set to be £2.95 per week per household, although some will lose less, and others

more. The changes will affect 11,400 people of autumn and received only 72 responses. working age.

Each year councils nationwide receive a high volume of applications for Single Person Discount.

However, some of these applications are not genuine and just like benefit cheats; these people are claiming reductions in their bills falsely.

Cllr Stuart Sullivan, cabinet member for resources, said: “People who take advantage of the system are taking advantage of genuine Tax payers and this can’t go on.

“We value our residents and understand they expect value for money in the service we provide. We

want to send them the message that we are doing all we can to stamp out fraud in the borough.”

During the council’s review of the single persons discount each case will be considered on its own merits. In some cases the mismatch may be due to someone moving out recently or if there is a carer resident.

In these cases, the records will be corrected on receipt of the information.

Those who choose not to declare the change will be put under investigation and their discount revoked if necessary.

When the Council Tax charge is set, the council takes into account the reduction in the amount due because of people claiming discounts or exemptions.

WICKFORD’S Continental Market has been hailed a huge success after hundreds of people attended.

Leader of Basildon Council, Cllr Tony Ball, thanked traders and residents for making the market another big success.

He said: “I attended with Mark Francois MP, and we were both impressed by the range of items on sale and the enthusiasm of those working on the stalls and hundreds of residents, young and old, who came along.

“This is the second time the market has been successful and I’m sure that it has again helped boost trade for existing traders in the town.”

Held in October and organised and funded by Basildon Council, residents had the chance to get their taste of the continent.

Trudie Crow, a resident from The Wick wrote in to thank the council for the “excellent continental market”. She wrote: “I am pleased it was held on a

The continental market in Wickford High Street saw professional market traders from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Holland, Poland and more, selling tasty food items such as Brittany biscuits, olives, Italian nougat, cheeses, sausages, tartiflette (a delicious cheese and potatoes dish from the Alps), charcuterie, freshly made crepes, fresh bread and croissants.

The market also offered a wide range of European products including hand bags and leather items, Marseille soaps, lavender, children’s toys and pashminas.

ALF DOVE AWARD FOR TENANT’S REP A BASILDON tenant representative has received the Alf Dove award.

Mayor Mo Larkin, presented the award to John McKay for his contribution to community services in October.

John’s friends and colleagues attended Lee Chaple North Community Centre to watch him receive his award.

Mandie Skeat, Basildon Council’s head of housing services, said: “John makes a real difference to his local community. He’s committed and proactive doing a lot of work

above and beyond the call of duty.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the Alf Dove award.”

John is widely recognised for his role in setting up the Lee Chapel North Holiday Club, strongly supported by his wife and family.

The Club, which is one of the mayor’s charities this year, provides activities for children during the school holidays and has recently launched the Diamond Club for the over 50’s.

More Winners at The Place!

TWO more lucky residents are celebrating after winning a free gym membership and a children’s party as part of The Place’s prize draw.

The prize draw was held in October as part of a promotion by the Pitsea multi-purpose community facility, and follows on from another prize draw held in May where three residents won free gym membership.

Karen Clarke of Nightingale Grove, Basildon won a free Fun Zone party including catering for her son, Chase, and up to 30 children, while Michelle Lewis of Steeplehall, Pitsea won a month’s free gym membership and a free induction.

Both ladies were thrilled!

Karen said: “This prize has really come at the right time with my son’s second birthday coming up soon. He’ll be able to invite all his friends to join us and celebrate at the Fun Zone’s soft play area!”

HOMES GET DEEP-CLEANED THE latest round of ‘Pride in your area’ days has been completed for the year, with 12,000 homes in 12 areas of the borough benefiting from a deep clean by Basildon Council’s operational teams.

Each area of around 1,000 properties received a doorstep collection of any large and bulky items which they needed to get rid of – completely free of charge.

Council operations staff also carried out graffiti removal, street sweeping and litter picking.

Cllr John Dornan, cabinet member for environment, said: “This is the third year that we

have run Pride in your area days and we have now covered 38,000 homes in that period.

“This year we collected over 120 tonnes of waste and recycling and worked to make a real difference to the areas we have been in.

“The council always aims to keep the streets clean, but by allocating extra resources to the Pride in your area days, we are able to go above and beyond – digging out overgrown alleyways and making sure that we are improving the cleanliness of neighbourhoods right across the borough.”

‘OPEN FOR BUSINESS’ THIS CHRISTMAS BASILDON Council’s offices will be open for business over much of the Christmas period to allow residents to access its services.

Most council offices (including the cashiers at the Basildon Centre, housing offices, and The Place, Pitsea Leisure Centre) will be closed from Tuesday 25 December to Wednesday 26 December, reopening with normal opening times on Thursday 27 December. Offices will also be closed on Tuesday 1 January and reopen on Wednesday 2 January 2013.

Barleylands Depot will close from 2.30pm on Monday 24 December, reopening with 9am to 3.30pm opening times on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 December.

It will also be open from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 December with 9am to 4pm opening times and will close at 2.30pm on Monday 31 December. Barleylands Depot will reopen on Wednesday 2 January with 9am to 3.30pm opening times, and from Thursday 3 January 2013 opening times will be as usual.

The Wickford Swimming Pool closes at 4pm on Monday 24 December and reopens on Thursday 27 December with normal opening times. The pool will again be closed at 4pm on Monday 31 December and will reopen as usual on Wednesday 2 January 2013.

YOUTH COUNCIL TO TACKLE BULLYING BULLYING, drug and substance abuse, and sexual health issues are the priorities Basildon Youth Council will be tackling over the next year.

These priorities were identified by the youth council following a month-long consultation with young people in September.

Bradley Davis, Chair of Basildon Youth Council said: “We carried out this consultation exercise, speaking to young people on the streets, and at schools and clubs to find out what is important to young people in the borough.

“Using the results of the consultation to decide what the youth council’s priorities should be for the next year will ensure our activities are relevant to what most concerns our younger residents.”

It is important to protect your home and your personal possession from incidents such as fire, burst pipes, storm damage and theft by purchasing buildings and contents insurance cover, and ensuring that the cover you purchase is adequate for your needs. If you are a tenant you may only need to purchase contents insurance cover, so check with your landlord.

Cabinet member for resources, Cllr Stuart Sullivan, said: “I urge all residents to ensure they have adequate insurance in place as, if

an incident occurs which results in a loss, you may find yourself losing out when it comes to replacing your items.

“Unfortunately, many people only find this out after the damage has been done.”

Buildings and contents insurance can be purchased through a variety of difference sources, such the internet, or alternatively you can appoint an insurance broker to provide you with advice and to assist you with purchasing the cover you require.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATED IN STYLE NEARLY 200 people celebrated International Black History Month in October with a free musical and dancing extravaganza at the Towngate Theatre.

Supported by Basildon Council, Aspire Essex, a local Basildon group, organised event which saw a fusion of story-telling, music, dance and food.

Spectators were treated to entertainment from local young people dancing to the popular Azonto dance, local poets, as well as the Gum Books Dancers.

One of the key speakers, Betty Makoni, is a multi-global award

winner, and is one of the first African women to be honoured by the United Nations. In 2011 she was named amongst the 150 women who shook the world by international current affairs magazine, Newsweek.

She said: “Basildon borough is once again celebrating International Black History Month as it gives people of all ethnicities and backgrounds the chance to celebrate and learn about the similarities and differences within the different cultures that make up our community.”

SPORTS PERSONALITY AWARD FOR MAX THE accolades for Max Whitlock have continued this month, with the Sporting Village gymnast winning the Active Essex Sports Personality of the Year.

Max, 19, who trains at the Sporting Village based South Essex Gymnastics Club, shot to fame this summer helping Team GB to two bronze medals. And his success has continued with the star winning the Sports Personality of the Year award at the special event held at the Colchester United Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The annual event rewarding sports across the county saw Max beat hockey star Chloe Rogers and shooting sensation James Huckle to the award. Meanwhile South Essex Gymnastics Head Coach Scott Hann came runner up in the Coach of the Year category.

Cllr Kevin Blake, cabinet member for leisure and arts at Basildon Council, said: “We have spoken about the Max Factor at the Sporting Village, he is a truly inspiration figure, and it’s fair to say that there has been a real surge in interest in gymnastics at the centre following his success at the games.

“This accolade is well deserved, but I think the whole event shows what a wealth of sporting talent we have in Essex.”

SPORTING VILLAGE SUCCESS CONTINUES THE BASILDON Sporting Village has seen an increase in usage in October it has been announced.

One of the highest performing centres in the Everyone Active group the village saw over 103,000 visitors in October compared to 91,600 in the same month in 2011.

Cllr Kevin Blake, Basildon Council cabinet member for leisure and arts, said: “The Sporting Village continues to build on its successes and the numbers using the centre really speak for themselves.

“We are seeing more people participating in sport, and since the Olympics the Sporting Village has really demonstrated that it is a centre which can be used both by the elite and those new to sport.

“However importantly the centre is also diversifying into other areas and hard to reach groups. Over the past few months we have seen some really popular projects such as the over 50s badminton, ‘get back into’ projects, and sessions aimed at physically and mentally disabled residents.”

The centre has also recently welcomed the Leopards Basketball team for the second season in Basildon, hosted England swimming trials and major cross country events.

The village has also increased the number of fitness classes available to meet the demand of additional customers.
