Penning your own album is a beautiful accomplishment. What’s your favorite aspect of being fully immersed in your own creations? Thank you! Obviously, nothing beats putting pen to paper and telling my story, but I like to be involved in every part of the creative process. From the songwriting and production to the mastering of the album and the artwork, I was there every step of the way. I worked on the artwork with a friend of mine, Jo’Lene Henry who made my first video.

In the manner of a riddle or a puzzle, like the manner of a game of consequences, these photographs paint a portrait in which the focus is not necessarily one that the eye perceives spontaneously. The intimate configuration of the portraits combined with broad framed scenes helps to dilute the subject in an apparent distance. The work puts us, through its theatricality, in a real position of spectator.

I

n today’s ever changing society,

millennials often get flack for a

certain media-obsessed lifestyle. We hear complaints of being glued to an iPhone, seeming self-involved, and preferring to communicate by emoji. But these same millennials are changing the world for the better by using their power to influence culture and inspire the generations below them. Millennials today continuously prove negative perceptions wrong. Whether in sports, fashion, entertainment, or truly any field, this young group is redefining what power is and how it is exercised. It is more than just influence on people, more than just wealth, more than just status. Power is the ability to reach new heights in whatever arena you choose, and redefine success -- take it to the next level and do something no one has ever done before. Power means being the best of the best, whether aiming to be the next Michael Jordan, the next Grace Coddington, or the next Meryl Streep. By redefining mass communication and disputing traditional structures, millennials are able to reach new heights and empower and influence those around them. No few words can truly

define power in 2016. It is a combination of many elements of success, and the way that success is harnessed. Social media influencers and fashion bloggers are a new generation of powerful men and women. This category did not even exist only a few short years ago‌ remember the days without Instagram or Snapchat? Neither do we. Celebrities can influence fashion and social perceptions, or make hundreds of thousands of dollars posting just one picture to Instagram because of the power and reach that they maintain. A celeb who immediately comes to mind in this realm of millennial social media is the infamous Kylie Jenner. Often her millions of followers see her posts on her new favorite waist trainer or detox tea, and buy right into it. Many fail to realize that Jenner is making a profit off of each of these posts because of her broad reach and fan base. In younger millennials, Snapchat is becoming the social media outlet of choice, and fans get to receive daily, almost constant contact that feels very personal and brings an element of connectedness that has never existed before. Celebrities use social media as a way to get closer to their 81

fans, but are also able to make money at the same time. While Kylie Jenner is a great example of a powerful woman in media, there are many who have created success from nothing. Fortunately, you don’t have to be born into the Kardashian family to gain this social media presence. In fact, the ability to build up your brand and your followers from scratch adds another element of success and power. In this sense, the millennial world is very much a meritocracy. Take Chiara Ferragni, for example, who started a fashion blog when she was 22 years old. Now, as the reigning queen of the fashion blogosphere, Ferragni’s brand has grown into something much bigger than her blog, The Blonde Salad. She has her own footwear line, has graced the covers of magazines including Lucky and Vogue España, and has collaborated with brands such as Christian Dior, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. Poised to become a

She proves that talent and hard work are the bones of becoming a success and influence. Two women who also burst on the fashion scene and became seemingly overnight superstars are Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel. Those names sound familiar? They are the designers of the obscenely popular “it” bag of last season, the Mansur Gavriel bucket bag. When they first debuted these coveted bags, they were just two friends with a shared design aesthetic. They were true to what they loved and ended up creating something that the rest of the world loved as well. This just goes to show that power and success is so much more than just a name or a label. It took Mansur and Gavriel hard work to get to where they are today, but confidence and belief in oneself can go a long way. 82

This sense of power, based on a loyal following, is something that is quite common for today’s society. Whether it be celebrities, actors, musicians, or entrepreneurs, having support and fans behind you is a huge aspect of power. The question is how these people harness this power and what they decide to do with it. Although he is certainly not a millennial, legend David Bowie is a perfect example of someone who used his power for good. He had the ability to nurture people’s minds, influence their well-being, and even shape them as human beings. We all saw how the world reacted to Bowie’s death, so there is no question as to the extent of his popularity, but also how loved he was by all. He influenced people to be different, be themselves, and gave many people great joy through his music. Even in death he had the power to achieve his first ever number one album. As we remember him, we remember the great influence that he has had on so many. Artists have the unique ability to influence their fans, and Bowie did so in such a positive way. He is a perfect example of someone who has inspired the generations below him.

n the flip side of things, we have two girls who have been in the spotlight since they were babies. Their road to success and influence was quite a different one, but also challenging. It’s very difficult to shake off people’s impressions and create a new identity. That is exactly what two twin sisters named Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen did. Formerly most famous for their role as Michelle in Full House, the sisters are now two of the most respected people in the fashion industry. Their line The Row was awarded Womenswear Designer of the Year not once but twice by the CFDA. How did Mary-Kate and Ashley, once two cutesy child stars, reinvent themselves to become fashion powerhouses exactly? Once again, we seem to circle back to the point that hard work really does pay off. In the fashion world, another brand with which everyone is obsessed is Balmain. Ever hear of the #BalmainArmy? What about #Balmaination? These are much more than just some promotional hashtags. n many cases, power stems from a different aspect of one’s life, whether it be an innate gift, as was the case with Kendrick Lamar, an instilled strong work ethic, or perhaps a difficult circumstance that becomes a motivator. This is certainly true for artist Marina Abramovic, who lived a violent, unloving childhood. At the age of 29, she was finally able to escape this life and begin her new life as an artist. She credits her artistic nature to her audience for giving her the encouragement and motivation that her family never did. This goes full circle in showing that, yes, Abramovic is powerful because she is a successful artist, but her fans are also powerful because they are the reason she keeps creating. The symbiotic relationship between the two can be true of any powerful person. Without support, fans, followers, their power is no longer as great. In 2016, women like Marina Abramovic maintain a stronger sense of power in society than ever. In every field, even male-dominated ones, women are succeeding and empowering others. One of the strongest movements that women today push for is to negate a sense of competition that we are often taught to feel towards each other. Actress and singer Zendaya is a young woman, only 19 years old, who has taken this idea and run with it. Last year, she was upset to discover that a magazine had photoshopped her waist and hips to make them look smaller. While many celebrities appreciate any photoshopping to improve their appearance, Zendaya immediately called out the magazine. She was upset that they would allow people to believe

that this body image was realistic when, in fact, it wasn’t even real. Her ability to use her power to promote a positive body image for other women is impressive, and hopefully will inspire others in positions of power to do the same. Of course, the expression of power by millennial women goes well beyond the entertainment and fashion worlds and is not limited to western societies. Millennials can claim responsibility for getting Barack Obama elected. The overthrow of the Egyptian government in 2011 is credited to the use of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube by hundreds of thousands of millennials. One woman who is a global power and a proponent of women is Malala Yousafzai. Yousafzai rose to prominence when she wrote

billionaire in the world. And, her creation of Theranos was a way to

create a cheaper, more personalized, and painless technology with quick results. In the future, perhaps this technology could be put to use in places where people would not have access to health care, and that is an admirable goal. In 2016, women are changing the definition of power and proving further the strength and ability that women of our time possess. Power is characterized as something slightly different to every person who embodies it. It can be defined by success in a certain field, whether it be Chiara Ferragni in the blogosphere, David Bowie in the music industry, or Elizabeth Holmes in health care. lliott Erwitt once said, “Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” Australian native, Thom Kerr, known for artfully conveying the bright, bold saturated-with-color world around him through his photography, spoke with me about his passion for photography and how it felt to shoot powerhouse celebrities like Tyra Banks, in our candid interview. In speaking with this jack-of-all-trades, Kerr shared the delicate balance that is his busy schedule. “I was the Australian editor of Black Magazine for the last five years, which was an incredible experience and a wonderful introduction to independent publishing.” Kerr stated. “The editors of Black inspire me with their authenticity and strength of character. However, I recently stepped down to embark upon a new journey creative 86

directing a beauty publication called Laud. (www.laudmagazine.com.au) Laud's point of difference is that it captures beauty focused editorial from a high fashion perspective.” he went on to say. So a new beginning?

In many ways, it feels like starting over again but this time building a publication where I have more artistic license with the content. It has been quite the challenge but we have had amazing agencies and brands come on board after one issue! So building the magazine over the last few months has meant that I have passed on many jobs so that I could focus on making sure the magazine was high

quality. At times, my personal life can be non-existent when it is busy, but on the other side, I have extraordinary experiences that move me deeply and keep me in a state of gratitude. And what does a typical day look like for a working photographer/editor such as yourself? I would say there are two types of typical days. Non-shoot days consist of waking up around 7am, usually checking my


email on my phone from bed. I eventually arise out of bed, jump in the shower and walk to my local coffee shop and get my iced latte. Then once I'm home with my coffee and breakfast snack, I launch into emails, phone calls, preproduction and retouching all day with breaks for lunch and dinner. I have only just started injecting long hour walks late at night before I go to bed where I will walk a few miles to help shake off the energy of the day. I will usually crash around midnight. On shoot days, I will be up early, straight into the shower, then checking all of my gear before I leave my apartment. I will usually save my morning coffee

until just before I arrive on studio or set. I will start playing music loudly and feel myself act out characters and turn into a weirdo on set. After the shoot once everything is packed up I will head home, usually dump gear and go treat myself to an amazing dinner. If I am really pumped about the shoot, I may look at the raw files before I go to dinner - but I try to give myself a bit of space so I can look at them with fresh eyes the following morning. 87

How has your style evolved over the years? I think for me it has always been a constant tap dance between what is expected of me commercially and what I want to explore artistically. I'm somebody who definitely came from the art world and stepped into the commercial fashion and celebrity side of photography. For a long time it was hard finding a balance between those worlds, often leaving me to feel quite conflicted. I think looking back now though, I learned a great

amount of discipline from collaborating with brands, artists and other creatives. I saw the world through their eyes and through understanding what their purpose or aim was, my perspective was liberated then expanded. In a way, it felt like developing a new skill set of solving problems and ticking boxes but delivering pictures in the most creative way possible. Being more technically proficient and goal orientated has meant that I can return to the eccentric part of myself with a newfound discipline. What was it like to work with the incredible powerhouse model Tyra Banks?

I found her to be very warm and a pleasure to work with. She was wonderful to everyone on set and was invested in making sure I was happy with the pictures. On an interesting side note, the year I had taken up photography I had decided to convince my friend to enter Australia's Next Top Model. I remember waiting with her in line in the shopping center with at least 100 other girls. Subsequently she got on the show and was runner up for the season. At the time, we were just kids from Brisbane (Australia), so being on reality TV seemed like the biggest thing that was possible. So if I could tell a younger version of myself, that in a number of 89


years I would be photographing the woman who created the whole series it would seem so completely impossible. It was quite a moment to look through your lens and see Tyra “smizing� back at you. And for the record, her energy was fantastic as a model. FIERCE. And lastly, just for fun, whom do you look to for inspiration on Instagram? I try not to fall into the bad habit of gazing at people with beautiful bodies for too long! I am quite vain with my Instagram and usually check in to see how my own activity is performing as I use it as a vehicle to promote my work as opposed to my personal life. When I am surfing pictures, I love looking at other artists outside of photography to get inspiration. They remind me to be authentic and adventurous with the pictures I take. Your collages are innovative and colorful, what inspires your design aesthetic? I can find an inspiration in every simple day of my life – advertisements or a ticket from a bus. Is your art self-taught or was this path something you studied and pursued professionally through schooling? I studied at university but in a completely different specialization, so my experience in art & collages is spontaneous movement from my mind. 98

The spontaneity and creativity is definitely felt in your works. How much of a piece is about the integrated fashion? Versus being purely an art piece? What inspires your featured fashion piece choices? They are all about fashion, because the biggest inspiration for me is new collections, photo shoots and ads from the magazines. For me, it is more important to work with how I can transform a piece (bags, shoes, accessories) into something new and unusual.

We are all fond of social media, just look around the street or a cafe and you will see how many people use their gadgets instead of participate in conversations in real time. Today you are a popular fashion designer if you have many followers on social media. For me it doesn't matter - I think it is more important to concentrate on clothing and my designs, not popularity. We respect artists who work for the love of their passion projects. Lastly, what is next for you creatively? I have a number of projects in the works and soon I’m debuting my own exhibition of my handmade collages in an Art Gallery in Saint Petersburg. At least that is the powerful message celebrity barber, formal model, fashion stylist and Instagram star ‘Thrash’ wants to empower the youth of today with. Starting from a humble background in South Carolina he made it a point to always be well dressed and carry himself with a confident and well put together air. “I have always been a very well dressed person, so when I began modeling I used to style my own shoots. Eventually all of the photographers that I was working with started requesting me to style other shoots for them. That's how the idea came along to become a stylist even though I didn't really embrace it until I moved to LA,” Thrash admits. Now Thrash is helping his clients break out of the mold and embrace a whole new side of themselves. “When it comes to reinventing a client’s style the most passionate thing for me is to see a client step out of their comfort zone and embrace something new. Majority of people are not as comfortable with themselves as they portray to be so it makes

His unique and outside of the box approach to fashion and style, such as pulling from vintage to modern along with his positive messaging, has earned him Instagram fame. When I asked him about using his social media as a powerful platform to share empowering messages, he explained this very intentional choice, “My passion lies in influencing the young crowd that may have come from a similar background as myself and show them that there are other ways to become successful than what the typical stereotypes may be. I took the road less traveled and I want to be that channel of hope for them to feel that, if he can do it, I can do it too”. When it comes to how personal style can make an impact on an individual’s life and the world, Thrash says, “They say don't judge a book by its cover but in all actuality subconsciously we all do. Being well dressed, well mannered, and well educated will get you in more doors than you can ever imagine. People have always thought I was a lot more stable than I actually was because of the way I dressed and carried myself”. Thrash’s personal style is boldly and authentically his own. He has had many eras influence his unique look and shares that, “I have been influenced by so many things from different color palettes to different ethnic cultures. I would say the most influential thing would be the various ways that style changes over the years. Vintage styles speak to me the most because I feel that is when style was genuine. Not so many trends and fads, but actual functionality”. So what does genuine style, authentic confidence and boldness mean exactly to Thrash? He thinks, “it comes from a place where someone extends themselves to the world from a genuine place to feed off of and influence others. When someone does it strictly for a peacock purpose, it is not received as well as from someone who owns his or her own style and confidence. If you are genuine and consistent to yourself, others will admire that about you and tend to follow. Not necessarily because of your style, but because of your genuine characteristics.” Thrash’s message is powerful and cuts to the core…BE BOLDLY YOU.
