DON’T USE TOXIC FLUOROCARBONS WHEN THERE ARE SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES Our hats off to Norway, for taking the lead by legislating a prohibition on PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) in clothing from 2014. The debate on the need to use fluorocarbons for waterproofing outdoor clothing has gone on for a long time. Klättermusen started work on phasing out these toxins in 2004. We welcome the Norwegian courage and would like to provide some guidance and our views on the issue.

ALL OUR OTHER PRODUCTS ARE ENTIRELY

SINCE 2008. We started working on fluorocarbon-free products

FLUOROCARBON-FREE. Products that are dirt and water resistant

in 2004 and after four years of pressure, succeeded in convincing all our fabric suppliers to provide us with PFOA-free alternatives. However, we signed an agreement in which we promised no liability if the products contained traces of fluorocarbons, because they could not guarantee that the machines were completely cleaned between production for us and for others. Klättermusen was first on the market with a PFOA-free water proof jacket, Noatun, in 2007. Many suppliers claim that we are still the only brand who wants an alternative treatment for textiles – but now there will be more of us. The Norwegian government has taken a wise decision in prohibiting textile products that contain PFOA. Thank you Norway – stand proud and let’s hope that the EU and the rest of the world follow your good example. We are pleased to welcome our colleagues to the world of more sustainable production methods.

FACTS ABOUT FLUOROCARBONS AND PFOA

Fluorocarbons are similar to female sex hormones and lead to reduced fertility in all mammals. They are also extremely toxic to aquatic organisms. Men’s sperm counts have reduced by 50% since the 1950s, and these substances are a possible cause, but certainly not the only one. Studies have shown that the level of PFOA is increasing in our children. In other words, a new-born child/calf/ foal – whatever the species – has levels that are higher (up to 20 times more) than its mother.

Fluorocarbons can be called PFOS or PFOA (there are many more) and are not only used in the textile industry. In the textile industry, only products that need to be water and dirt repellent may contain fluorocarbons; they are not used in base and mid layers. PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonate) has 16 carbon atoms and is highly

toxic, is not biodegradable and is an endocrine disruptor. Its use in textiles has long been prohibited in the US and the EU. The more carbon atoms, the more toxic the fluorocarbon. PFOA (perfluorooctanic acid) has 8 carbon atoms. It is also

persistent, i.e. it is not biodegradable. The levels of it found in our blood are increasing, and PFOA is both an endocrine disruptor and carcinogenic. It is prohibited in Norway from 1 June 2014. C6 technology is also fluorocarbon-based but is significantly less

toxic and is not yet proven to be carcinogenic. However, it is an endocrine disruptor and affects the reproductive capacity of mammals.

Buy a colour that you love, because Brede will outlast all the current fashions. Due to their construction, the pockets are not totally waterproof. Use the specially constructed GPS/phone pocket for items that need to be kept totally dry. Very hardwearing, but not lightweight. This is a jacket for active people who aren’t scared of a snowstorm.

THE NAKED TRUTH

The Froste jacket should be combined with high cut salopettes in the winter. You will really feel what naked means when you roll up the back and open up all the ventilation zips – and that’s the truth. Very hardwearing, but not lightweight.

THE NAKED TRUTH

This is the shell garment for people who like to keep it lightweight, but who still want durable equipment with a long life. Skidbladner does not have a rigid wind funnel and is therefore not designed for expeditions to the North Pole or similar places.

Skidbladner is Frejas super light ship built from cobwebs and bird spittle. The ship can be folded up and kept in a pocket – even though it has enough space for 30 men.

THE NAKED TRUTH

Allgrön is a slim jacket with great fit. If you are on the large side, you should perhaps try a different jacket, or one size larger than normal. The jacket does not have a rigid wind funnel on the hood, so is not suitable for an expedition to somewhere really cold. Recycled polyester is not as durable as polyamide, but you do get a product with high ECO-index points.

Allgrön is an island that is owned by the giant, Fjölvar. It is very beautiful and it is said that the god Oden like to visit and seduce girls who are dazzled by his appearance.

THE NAKED TRUTH

The front pocket allows you to make full use of the area between the hip belt and shoulder harness when carrying a backpack. The lightweight, two-and-a-half layer material is not as strong as the material in the heavier Brede and Froste, thus life expectancy is shorter for the Ask jacket.

NAME STORY

Ask was the first man, and Embla was the first woman. They were created by Odin, Höner and Lodur by giving life to two trees, an ash (ask in Swedish) and an elm. They lived in Midgård and were probably very, very happy.

This product is more hardwearing than lightweight, but if you are an active person who’s not scared of a snowstorm, then this is the garment for you. Freke is not very comfortable without long johns underneath. It is designed more for the rough mountains than for après ski, but you will have a unique appearance at the bar.

This “deposit” value is up to €20, which will act as an incentive to return the product for recycling. No deposits will be returned on older products, those that do not have a deposit label. However, we will accept them for recycling in an environmentallyfriendly manner. THE SHOPS HAVE A KEY ROLE in getting the

recycling programme to work. The consumer takes a worn-out Klättermusen product to the shop and has the deposit returned in the shape of a credit voucher – money that can be used to buy new Klättermusen equipment.

The salesperson cuts off the centre of the deposit label that is sewn into the old product and places it in an envelope. The shop sends the labels it has collected to Klättermusen and receives a credit on the next invoice. Klättermusen’s representative collects the recycling products when they visit the shop and takes it back to our facilities.

Our rECOver recycling programme includes the following materials: polyamide, polyester, polypropylene and metal. Klättermusen is one of the first manufacturers of outdoor equipment in the world to recycle polyamide and polypropylene.

Klättermusen’s Merino wool comes from approximately five sheep stations in New Zealand, which are able to provide very fine micron wool. The wool is scoured and carded in China and then spun and knitted in Auckland NZ before being sewn into fantastically soft and comfortable garments. Wool is a great material with natural antibacterial properties, which means you won’t smell as bad as you would after a week in the mountains in synthetic underwear. It’s biodegradable and comes from a renewable source. Wearing wool feels good both for the mind and body.

Is Merino a new breed of sheep? Merino is not a new breed of sheep; in fact, the Merino is thought to be the oldest sheep breed in the world, having evolved from several wild species. How many are there? Merino sheep account for approximately 5% of all sheep in New Zealand. That makes 3.3 million Merino sheep, of which 97% are on the South Island. When did they arrive in New Zealand? In 1773 Captain James Cook brought two Merino sheep to New Zealand from South Africa on his second voyage. Unfortunately his Noah’s Ark attempt to establish a breed from two sheep alone did not succeed. They took a bite of a poisonous plant and died. Isn’t wool itchy? Well, for sure it can be. Wool fiber have scales, like fish! They have to be removed in order to make the fibre soft and non itchy. Shearing = shaving the sheep. This is done once a year between August and November, leaving enough time for the sheep to grow some more wool before the cold winter months. Scouring = washing the wool and removing the lanolin.

Top = after the fibre has been scoured and carded, the fibre is combed to remove short fibres before it is transformed into a long white sliver of combed, clean fibre that is very soft to the touch. That sliver is the top. Micron = or micrometre (mc), is the measurement used to express the diameter of the wool fibre. The lower the micron, the finer the fibre, and thus less sticky. Huntaway = a New Zealand breed of sheep dog, which works sheep by barking loudly and for a long time.

This is an extremely advanced pack, but it is very easy to adjust. The floating V-Free Flex™ shoulder harness may feel a little tight and stiff at first, but the system really starts to show its strengths after only a few kilometres on the trail. Mimer has a showerproof zip, but the seams are not taped so it is not fully waterproof. The outside stretch pocket should not be used for sensitive electronics in the rain. There is a simple laptop compartment inside, but it does not offer the same level of protection as Gnå.

We are looking for the difficult combination of function and durability, and work with our suppliers to have recycled and recyclable fibres in as many materials as possible. Our aim is that all our products will one day be recyclable and that as many as possible will have bluesign® approved components. We have succeeded with some, but there is still some left to go.

Dyed cotton always bleeds a little when it is worn and washed, particularly dark colours. This means the garment will eventually have a slightly faded appearance, like jeans. Cotton is biodegradable. fabric is a blend with MFR 8 that is made from 76% densely woven organic cotton mixed with 24% recycled polyester. The waterproofing is PFOA-free. The fabric is strong and weighs 202 g/m2. THE HIRSUTUM

The fabric is soft, silent and comfortable. It has high water resistance. Ventilation through the fabric is perfectly adequate, despite it being perceived as windproof. Klättermusen has its own brand, Cutan®. The material is available as Cutan® Super Stretch and Cutan® Stretch RP, where the RP stands for “recycled polyester”. Both types are waterproof three-layer fabrics with taped seams and good stretch qualities. We also have Cutan® Stretch, which is a twoand-a-half layer fabric of 100% polyamide, with Cutan® ripstop as reinforcement. consists of an inside layer in polyamide mesh, or net lining, a waterproof polyurethane membrane in the middle and an outer fabric of polyamide and stretch fibre. The fabric layers are laminated to work as a single fabric. The fabric is soft and flexible and has great stretch. It is available in two thicknesses, where the difference is in the outer fabric. CUTAN® SUPER STRETCH

has an inside fabric in polyester mesh, a waterproof polyester membrane in the middle and an outer fabric in 100% recycled polyester. The fabric layers are laminated to work as a single fabric. The fabric is 100% recyclable and is soft, flexible and stretchy, manufactured by Teijin® and ECO-circle® certified. CUTAN® STRETCH RP

is a two-and-a-half layer fabric in 100% polyamide, with a Polyurethane coating instead of a membrane. CUTAN® STRETCH

Cutan® Ripstop is a waterproof two-layer fabric with a weight of 73 g/m2. Membrane in polyurethane and outer fabric in polyamide that has been woven using a ripstop technique to increase tear resistance. PFOA-free. The membrane in all Cutan® fabrics is entirely free of PTFE and thus fluorocarbon-free. The waterproofing in the outer

fabrics in Cutan Super Strech®, Cutan Strech RP® and Cutan Strech® is PFOA-free. We now use C6 technology for waterproofing, but in the future we hope to find a completely fluorocarbon-free method for waterproofing our shell garments. All Cutan® fabrics have a water column that is measured at more than 20 metres and we have a standard of 5 metres for the tape. The fabrics’ RET value, or diffusion capacity, which describes how well the material allows through vapour and sweat, is 5–6 depending on the thickness of the outer fabric. The lower the value the better, and 5–6 is excellent. MFR MATERIALS

We have a range of materials that are included in the MFR (mass flow resistance) concept, i.e. materials that are not waterproof, but which are wind resistant and water repellent. The number after MFR states the resistance to airflow through the fabric. The higher the number, the more wind resistant it is. We measure from 0, which is no resistance, like naked skin, to 8, which is our highest value. A higher value than this is endless, i.e. a waterproof membrane, which does not allow through a measureable amount of air. is a MFR 8 fabric and is made from 100% organic cotton with fluorocarbon-free waterproofing. Our cotton is tightly woven and has long fibres. It is grown the south of the USA and is spun, woven and dyed in Switzerland. The cotton is GOTS* certified (Global Organic Textile Standard). We use two different weights; one is a little thinner at 205 g/m2, and is used for jackets, the other is thicker at 240 g/m2 and is used in pants. ETAPROOF®

This type of cotton fabric has exceptional properties and was used by the military during WWII. The fabric is soft, silent and comfortable. It has a high level of water resistance. Ventilation through the fabric is perfectly adequate, despite it being perceived as windproof.

is a material composed of 95% tough, recycled polyamide and 5% stretch fibres, with a weight of 275 g/m2. It is MFR 5 and has fluorocarbon-free waterproofing. OCULUS

It is specially developed for long climbing trips on which you need a hardwearing fabric for protection, without compromising stretch and wind resistance. The yarn is certified by Global Recycling Standard (GRS), which is a certification that ensures that the yarn has been manufactured from post-consumer waste, rather than industrial waste, and is made by Hyosung Corp. is a MFR 5 fabric and is made from 100% polyamide, with a weight of 47g/m2. It has PFOA-free waterproofing. It is a very light ripstop fabric with one-way stretch. It has light weight and great stretch qualities. LEVITEND

is a MFR 5 fabric and is made from 100% polyamide, with a weight of 73g/m2. It has PFOA-free waterproofing. The fabric has a mechanical stretch and is easier to recycle than fabrics blended with stretch fibres. LEVITEND FORTE

is a MFR 5 fabric and is made from 100% polypropylene, which is a very light, hollow fibre that absorbs almost no moisture. The fabric is certified by Cradle to Cradle (C2C). It melts at 160°C (320°F), which means that you have to be careful around open flames, so that no sparks hit the fabric. Clothes made from polypropylene should not be ironed. CAVEA

is a MFR 2 fabric and is made from 100% polypropylene, which is a very light, hollow fibre that absorbs almost no moisture. The fabric is a double weave with a brushed inside, giving it a soft woolly feel. It melts at 160°C (320°F), which means that you have to be careful around open flames, so that no sparks hit the fabric. Clothes made from polypropylene should not be ironed. CAVEA MOLLE

Both Cavea fabrics are easy to recycle with minimal energy consumption, and very little water is used in its manufacture; only 30 ml for one kilo of fabric. Currently available

waterproofing agents do not make this fabric more water repellent. We have therefore chosen not to give the fabric any special finishing treatment. is a MFR 2 fabric and is a blend of 70% polyamide, 20% polyester and 10% stretch fibres, with a weight of 180 g/m2 and fluorocarbon-free waterproofing. WindStretch® is a durable fabric with good wind resistance. We use it in our softshell garments when we need good stretch and a hardwearing surface. WINDSTRETCH®

OCULUS MOLLE LIGHT is

a MFR 2 fabric and is a blend of 95% recycled polyamide and 5% stretch fibres. The fabric is entirely fluorocarbon-free. It is soft and durable. The yarn is GRS certified, i.e. global recycling standard, which is a certification that ensures that the yarn has been manufactured from post-consumer waste, rather than industrial waste, and is made by Hyosung Corp. The fabric is not impregnated with waterproofing. is a MFR 0.9 fabric and is a blend of 11% Kevlar®, 11% stretch fibres, 18% Coolmax® and 60% polyamide. This fantastic material is a weighty 340 g/m2 and is designed to protect motorcyclists in crashes. It has everything: stretch, a soft inside and good wind resistance. We have chosen to reinforce some areas of our products to increase their durability. This may be on the shoulders for jackets or on the seat for pants. The materials below are never used in an entire garment, but there are other materials that are used for the whole of some products and as reinforcement on others, so the material descriptions are in another section.

Down 95/5 contains 95% goose down and 5% small feathers. Fill power 800+ (IDFB/US method) 750+ (EN 12131).

is a extremely hardwearing material made from Kevlar® polyamide, coated with polyurethane. SCHOELLER® KEPROTEC

is a unique surface treatment that Klättermusen has developed to improve durability. It is a coating that is applied to particularly vulnerable places such as shoulders or elbows, increasing wear resistance by up to five times. The Duracoat™ treatment is very soft and flexible and, because no extra seams or layers of fabric are required, durability improves without increasing the garment’s weight. Klättermusen has used Duracoat™ for many years and is now using it on increasing numbers of products. DURACOAT™

INSULATING MATERIALS

We fill our insulating garments so that they hold the air that keeps you warm. We use the following fills: is the optimal microfiber insulation. Ultrafine fibres are specially treated in a patented process and then combined to make an insulating core that is incredibly soft, light and water repellent. Primaloft® Eco contains 50% recycled fibres. It doesn’t absorb any water and is thus suitable for wet weather. PRIMALOFT® ECO

It is coated with TPU (polyurethane) and has a water column of at least 10 metres. The fabric is 100% flourocarbonfree. RETINA BASTA

is an amazingly robust fabric, 100% made from recycled polyamide, 420 denier nailhead. The raw materials are old fishing nets and carpets. No new oil has been used in the fabric during its manufacture. The yarn is GRS-certified (which guarantees that it is made from recycled material) and is made by Hyosung corp. It is coated with TPU (polyurethane) and has a water column of at least 10 metres. The fabric is 100% flourocarbonfree. RETINA FORTE

RETINA LIGHT is

a very light, thin fabric made from 100% recycled polyamide, 40 denier nailhead ripstop. The raw materials are old fishing nets and carpets. No new oil has been used in the fabric during its manufacture. The yarn is GRS-certified (which guarantees that it is made from recycled material) and is made by Hyosung corp. It is coated with silicone and has a water column of at least 3 metres. The fabric is 100% flourocarbonfree. ZIPS, BUCKLES, WEBBING, ETC.

It’s a certified waste product from the food industry, which means it is not plucked from live birds, and is of excellent quality.

Klättermusen always strives to use the best accessories in its products. This applies to everything from thread to webbing and whistles.

Good down quality is characterised by low weight, high loft and good compression, which is usually described using the concept of fill power. The higher the fill power, the better the quality and the more warmth. The finest down has 95% down and 5% small feathers, thus giving it high fill power. This means the jacket’s fill is very light and fluffy. Using a finer quality down with more fill power gives more heat per unit of weight. In other words, a light down jacket with fine down is just as warm as a heavier jacket of poorer quality. We use three different qualities. All of them are good. The reason that jackets with Etaproof® cotton as the outer fabric have 80/20 down is that a higher proportion of feathers are

NOTES

Most garments have binding bands at the sleeves and lower hems to avoid wear in vulnerable areas. The binding is either made from polyester or polyamide, depending on the fabric in the garment. We use only high quality YKK zips. Our plastic buckles are also of the highest quality. When we select them we prioritise long length of life and an ability to withstand freezing temperatures. We aim to have material of the same chemical origins in our garments and backpacks, so that our products are easier to recycle.
