This year we also took a look at our facilities to see if we could give our staff and our artists better venues to produce the top-quality work we do year after year.

Barrington Stage has had a very busy winter.

We renovated the Blatt Center, adding 26 seats to the St. Germain Theatre, a new entrance and an expanded stage. We also moved our administrative offices, costume shop and rehearsal spaces to the Wolfson Theatre Center - a marvelous, grand building in downtown Pittsfield. It was the generous gift of Jessie and Bernie Wolfson and we can’t thank them enough! And lastly, we have renovated our Octagon House, formerly our admin offices next to the Mainstage, and converted it into much needed staff housing. We are thrilled to be adding to the excitement in downtown Pittsfield with the renovation of our buildings. We are committed to making Pittsfield grow and prosper.

I thought it would be difficult to choose a winning season after last year’s tremendous successes, from American Son to The Pirates of Penzance to Broadway Bounty Hunter, but Julie Boyd has done it again and we have a sensational 2017 season planned for you.

We have two thrilling, award-winning musicals, two hysterically funny comedies, breathtaking psychological thrillers and a knock-out performance by BSC Associate Artist Jeff McCarthy…we will be laughing, crying, clapping – and maybe even hiding under our seats!

Barrington Stage also welcomes back Associate Artist Mark H. Dold as well as BSC favorites Elizabeth Stanley, Jane Pfitsch and Jay Armstrong Johnson.

Behind the scenes, Musical Director Darren Cohen will be celebrating his 20th year at BSC, Composer/Lyricist Bill Finn and Set Designer Brian Prather will be returning for their​14th seasons and the incomparable Renee Lutz, our Production Stage Manager, will be returning for her 22nd year! Our family of artists is very special to us as year after year they come back to share their talents.

Dear Barrington Stage Patron,

GET TO KNOW BARRINGTON STAGE COMPANY ABOUT THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JULIANNE BOYD (Artistic Director) co-founded the Barrington Stage Company in January 1995. She has directed many productions at BSC. In 2016 she directed two world premieres: Christopher Demos-Brown’s American Son, which won the Laurents-Hatcher Award for Best New Play of 2016 by an emerging playwright, and the musical Broadway Bounty Hunter by Joe Iconis, Jason SweetTooth Willims and Lance Rubin. Other productions include the world premieres of Mark St. Germain’s Dancing Lessons, Dr. Ruth, All The Way and Best of Enemies, and the critically acclaimed revival of Goldman and Sondheim’s Follies. In 1997 she directed BSC’s smash hit production of Cabaret, which won six Boston Theatre Critics Awards and transferred to the Hasty Pudding Theatre in Cambridge for an extended run.

Boyd conceived and directed the Broadway musical Eubie!, a show based on the music of Eubie Blake which starred Gregory Hines and garnered three Tony nominations. She also co-conceived and directed (with Joan Micklin Silver) the award-winning Off Broadway musical revue A…My Name Is Alice (Outer Critics’ Award) and its sequel A…My Name Is Still Alice. Over the past thirtyfive years she has worked extensively in New York and regional theatres.

In 2000 Ms. Boyd created the Playwright Mentoring Project, BSC's youth at-risk program that won the prestigious Coming Up Taller Award in 2007. This award, given by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, is the nation's highest honor for after school and out of school programming. In 2015 the Playwright Mentoring Project also won the Commonwealth Award for Creative Youth Development.

From 1992 to 1998 Ms. Boyd served as President of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, the national labor union representing professional directors and choreographers in the U.S. She holds a Ph.D. in Theatre History and Criticism from CUNY Graduate Center.

She and her husband Norman have three grown children.

BRANDEN HULDEEN (Artistic Producer) From 2008-2016, Branden was the New Works Director and Festival Producing Director at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre where he produced the Festival of New Musicals, managed the National Fund for New Musicals and Writers Residency Grants, and oversaw all of the New Works and Festival programs for NAMT, as well as consulted on, spoke about and advocated for new works development internationally. Prior to NAMT, Branden worked in education at TDF, house managed the Vineyard Theatre Off Broadway, and produced for NYU, SPF, NYMF and FringeNYC. BSC'S MISSION Co-founded in 1995 by Artistic Director Julianne Boyd, Barrington Stage Company (BSC) is a not-forprofit professional theatre company in the Berkshires (MA) with a three-fold mission: to produce topnotch, compelling work; to develop new plays and musicals; and to find fresh, bold ways of bringing new audiences into the theatre, especially young people.

HISTORY Barrington Stage Company is the fastest growing arts venue in Berkshire County, attracting more than 56,000 patrons each year. BSC continues to gain national recognition for its superior quality productions and comprehensive educational programming.

Barrington Stage has produced several award-winning plays and musicals, beginning in its inaugural year with The Diary of Anne Frank, which won the Elliot Norton/Boston Theatre Critics Award. In its third year, BSC won two Elliot Norton/Boston Theatre Critics Awards and four Outer Critics Awards for its smash hit production of Cabaret, which moved to Boston and played an extended run at the Hasty Pudding Theatre. Several other BSC productions, including Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill; Mack and Mabel; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; Follies; West Side Story; Freud’s Last Session; Sweeney Todd; Best of Enemies; Breaking the Code and On the Town have been named among the top 10 productions of the year in many area newspapers — leading The Boston Globe to laud BSC as “one of the jewels in the state’s crown.”

This past season Barrington Stage won 20 out of 25 Berkshire Theatre Awards, the first annual theatre awards in Berkshire County, with the majority of the awards going to Barrington’s productions of American Son, The Pirates of Penzance and Broadway Bounty Hunter.

AND THEN TO BROADWAY….

Barrington Stage gained national prominence in 2004 with the world premiere of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin. The musical, a runaway hit at Barrington Stage, later moved to Broadway and won two Tony Awards. In June 2013, BSC produced Leonard Bernstein, Comden, and Green’s On the Town, directed by John Rando and choreographed by Joshua Bergasse. It received across-the-board rave reviews, with Ben Brantley of The New York Times writing, “Normally, I wouldn’t tell citizens of the five boroughs to drive three hours to be told that New York is a helluva town. But this enchanted vision of a city that was—and of course never was— is worth catching…” A Broadway production opened in October of 2014 to rave reviews. The show received four Tony nominations, including Best Musical Revival.

The Boyd-Quinson Mainstage

A PERMANENT HOME In its first 11 years, BSC operated from rented space at the Consolati Performing Arts Center at Mount Everett High School in Sheffield, MA. BSC used a high school auditorium as their Mainstage space, and two cafeterias as makeshift theatres, one for their Stage 2 (where The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee premiered) and the other for their Youth Theatre. In July 2005, BSC purchased a 1912 vaudeville theatre in downtown Pittsfield and presented their first season in 2006 in the partially renovated space (with only the orchestra available for seating). By June 2007, BSC opened its doors to a completely renovated 520-seat, state-of-the art theatre now known as the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage.

In the spring of 2012, BSC purchased the former V.F.W. building in Pittsfield, three blocks from the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage. The building, now called the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center in honor of the BSC patrons who made the purchase of the building possible, houses the 136-seat St. Germain Stage and Mr. Finn’s Cabaret, a 99-seat cabaret space in the lower level of the building.

In the summer of 2016, Barrington Stage’s campus grew once again, with the acquisition of 122 North Street, now called the Wolfson Center, after BSC patrons Jessie and Bernie Wolfson, who made the purchase possible. In May of this year, BSC’s administrative offices, rehearsal rooms and costume shop moved to the Wolfson Center, giving Barrington a prime location in downtown Pittsfield.

BSC has become an integral part of downtown Pittsfield’s economic revitalization. In 2009 the Massachusetts Cultural Council presented a “Creative Community” Commonwealth Award to the City of Pittsfield in recognition of its efforts to boost the creative economy in Massachusetts.

Since its inception in 1995, Barrington Stage (BSC) has produced 28 new works, 16 of which have moved on to New York and major regional theatres around the country. BSC believes that new work is the heart and soul of theatre.

If theatre is to thrive and create meaningful and new experiences for audiences, then it is vital to support playwrights and their visions of the world we live in.

BSC’s New Works Initiative takes a two-pronged approach – PlayWorks, spearheaded by Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and Director of New Play Development Branden Huldeen, supports the creation of new plays while our acclaimed Musical Theatre Lab, overseen

by Tony Award-winning composer/lyricist William Finn and Artistic Director Julianne Boyd develops new musicals. In both of these programs, BSC seeks artists whose unique voices speak to our audiences with relevant new plays and musicals. BSC hopes our new work will ask questions of the world we live in – questions that may not have answers but will begin a dialogue between the artists and our audiences.

In 2000 Barrington Stage began producing new plays with Suzanne Bradbeer’s Full Bloom but it wasn’t until 2003/2004 that our new works gained momentum with the world premieres of Mark St. Germain’s Ears On A Beatle, followed by his The God Committee in 2004, both of which moved Off Broadway.

In 2009, Mark St. Germain’s Freud’s Last Session secured our place in the development of new plays because of its tremendous success with both critics and audiences. It ran more than 10 weeks on BSC’s Stage 2, becoming the longest running play in BSC’s history. It later moved to New York where it played Off Broadway for more than two years.

MUSICAL THEATRE LAB BSC’s commitment to new work is also seen in the acclaimed Musical Theatre Lab (MTL). MTL was created after BSC workshopped and premiered William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2004). It was in response to musical theatre writers not having a home to develop their shows. As William Finn writes, “Musicals, when they are good, soar. But what seems effortless is only achieved through a painstaking, exacting developmental process...few people understand the complexity of the process because they don’t see the work being developed. They don’t see the talent of the unproduced.”

MTL is a place for young musical theatre writers to develop their work on all levels: from staged readings to workshops to full productions. Since its creation in 2006, 11 world premieres and 6 workshops of new musicals have been produced, and many have moved on to New York and around the country, most notably: • The critically acclaimed The Burnt Part Boys (2006), written by Nathan Tysen, Chris Miller and Marianne Elder, received a production at Playwrights Horizons in 2010.

• See Rock City and Other Destinations by Adam Mathias and Brad Alexander was produced in 2008 and later played at the Transport Group in NYC. • In 2010 BSC produced The Memory Show by Sarah Cooper and Zachary Redler, which was later seen at the Transport Group in 2013.

• The Black Suits by Joe Iconis and Robert Maddock received a workshop production at BSC in 2012 and received its world premiere at Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles.

• In 2013, Southern Comfort, written by Dan Collins and Julianne Wick Davis and starring Annette O’Toole and Jeff McCarthy, opened to rave reviews and transferred to the Public Theater in NYC in 2016.

• A Little More Alive (2015) by Nick Blaemire will soon be made into a movie.

• Plans are in the works for last season’s hit musical Broadway Bounty Hunter, written by Joe Iconis, Lance Rubin and Jason SweetTooth Williams to be produced Off Broadway in the 2018-2019 season.

COMMUNITY Barrington Stage, under Artistic Director Julianne Boyd, is in the forefront of creating new and significant community activities and events.

Most notably:

In 2016, Barrington Stage presented Christopher Demos Brown’s American Son, which was the impetus for a weekend symposium on race and bias. It also played to more than 2,000 high school students who participated in talk backs with the actors and creative staff.

In November 2016, Artistic Director Julianne Boyd was the first recipient of the Larry Murray Award, given by the Berkshire Theatre Critics Association to the individual whose work best advances the social and community issues in the Berkshires.

Barrington Stage is making a significant investment to the Pittsfield economy with its new 28,000 square foot Wolfson Theatre Center, that houses administrative offices, rehearsal studios, education classrooms, a costume shop and a box office. The Wolfson Theatre Center will be Barrington Stage’s fourth major investment in downtown Pittsfield. It will join the BoydQuinson Mainstage, the Octagon House and the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center.

BSC sells more than 56,000 tickets each year to nine stage productions and numerous concerts, cabarets and special events with over 285 performances in four venues in downtown Pittsfield.

BSC created the 10X10 New Play Festival and was one of the major forces in putting together the 10x10 Upstreet Arts Festival, which now draws more than 6,000 patrons to events in downtown Pittsfield each February.

COMMUNITY AND THE ECONOMY Did you know...

BSC has helped to revitalize downtown Pittsfield by creating a vibrant cultural district and drawing visitors who patronize local businesses.

BSC and our patrons spend $5 million annually in the Berkshires.

BSC has a local economic impact of more than $8.1 million annually.

BSC has invested approximately $7.5 million in capital projects since moving to Pittsfield in 2006.

BSC employs 20 full-time, year-round residents of Berkshire County with a total payroll of more than $850,000.

BSC hires more than 275 seasonal employees with a total payroll of more than $750,000.

A strong commitment to local youth is of paramount importance to all of us at BSC, as well as training the next generation of theatre artists.

To that end: BSC serves 70—80 underserved youth each year in our award-winning Playwright Mentoring Project (PMP). Over 1,500 students attend PMP performances. At the close of our six month PMP program each year, participants report decreases in risky behaviors and increases in school attendance and GPA. BSC provides subsidized tickets to local high school students to attend our fall show. We offer free, in-classroom, pre-show workshops for many of the students for the fall show.

BSC engages over 75 Berkshire County students who directly participate annually in Youth Theatre and KidsAct!. These performances are seen by more than 3,000 people.

BSC provides professional training for more than 50 students each year through our Musical Theatre Conservatory and Professional Internship Program.

DEPARTMENT HEADS & STAFF CAROL CHIAVETTA (Director of Marketing) joined Barrington Stage in October 2015. As CMO of Blue Man Productions, she managed Blue Man Production by developing and overseeing all marketing initiatives. Carol worked at Disney Theatrical where she worked on The Lion King, Aida, and Beauty and the Beast. Her work has encompassed many Broadway and Off Broadway companies and productions including but not limited to Manhattan Theatre Club where she worked to successfully launch Manhattan Theatre Club’s Biltmore Theatre, Baz Luhrmann’s La Boheme, Avenue Q and On the Town. Carol is happy to be in the Berkshires as Marketing Director for Barrington Stage Company.

MAGGIE LAMEE (General Manager) comes to Barrington Stage after 15 years as General Manager for Allied Integrated Marketing. Prior to that she was the Director of Finance for Global Health Strategies and General Manager for Jeffrey Finn Productions. Maggie was also the Lead Producer and General Manager for the Pump Boys and Dinettes Theatre in Branson, MO. She currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors of The Center School, a progressive elementary and middle school in Greenfield, MA. Maggie moved to Northampton, MA with her partner and daughter five years ago from NYC and is very happy to have a yard for gardening... her favorite pastime.

JOSEPH MARTIN (Director of Production and Operations) Joe comes to Barrington Stage Company after 18 seasons as Director of Production for Cleveland Play House. He also served as Production Manager at La Jolla Playhouse, Arizona Theatre Company, and Northwestern University. Before becoming a Production Manager, Joe worked as an Equity Stage Manager with the Denver Center Theatre Company, Sound Designer for Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, and Technical Director at the University of Notre Dame. As an educator, Tim has worked with the education programs at Cohoes Music Hall (NY), Warren Consolidated School of Performing Arts (MI), Arts Academy in the Woods (MI), STREB Action Lab’s SLAM (NY), Stagedoor Manor (NY), Granbury Opera House (TX), Little Theatre on the Square (IL), and The Co-op School (NY). A graduate of Michigan State University, he has also worked creatively as a writer, director, choreographer and performer all over the country.

EDUCATION MISSION The mission of BSC’s Education Department is to awaken the minds, imaginations and creative power of children and teenagers by providing opportunities for them to experience the joy of live theatre as performers, writers, technicians and audience members.

Every year, 7,000 young people engage in the education programs at BSC as participants and audience members. BSC offers more than 250 classes and professional development sessions, and employs 40-50 teaching artists per year. As an extension of BSC’s mission statement, our education programs are rooted in developing the artist's voice and imagination through positive creative outlets.

PLAYWRIGHT MENTORING PROJECT (PMP) The Playwright Mentoring Project (PMP) is an intensive, six-month, out-of-school activity that uses theatre as a catalyst to help underserved youth learn valuable life skills that can aid them in developing positive self-images. PMP is offered at no cost to the students, and no audition is required. Over the course of the program, teens create an original performance piece based on their own stories in a safe and confidential environment. Throughout the six months, students develop confidence, learn to express themselves and create a supportive community together.

BSC currently offers eight PMP groups: four in Pittsfield, three in North Adams and one courtmandated group where participation is a condition of probation and is overseen by the Juvenile Court of Berkshire County.

PMP groups meet once a week after school for a two-hour session. During these sessions, the artistic team guides the groups through a series of trust exercises, theatre games, storytelling and most importantly, conflict resolution activities. These lead to exercises in scene writing and improvisations that, with the assistance of a playwright mentor, develop into a completed script.

In March, groups begin meeting for longer sessions each week to rehearse their performance piece. The sessions culminate in early April with a series of performances at local high schools, social service agencies and Barrington Stage Company. Every performance is followed by a talk back session led by the PMP cast.

Our participants develop focus, discipline and strategies to tackle seemingly insurmountable problems. The conflict resolution skills introduced and reinforced by the program empower the young people to make positive, long-term life choices and to act as leaders among their peers.

MUSICAL THEATRE CONSERVATORY (MTC) The Musical Theatre Conservatory (MTC) is an intensive 10-week pre-professional program that offers serious theatre students training in the areas of performance, direction and choreography.

Students also have the opportunity to earn Equity points and train with top-level New York actors, directors and choreographers.

The program is limited to 20 outstanding pre-professionals (16 performance students, 3 Directing Assistants and 1 Choreography Assistant) and guarantees individualized instruction and mentoring.

Previous instruction and Master Class teachers have included Debra Jo Rupp (That 70’s Show), Marin Mazzie (Ragtime, Next to Normal), Jason Danieley (Candide, Curtains) Annie Golden (Hair, Orange is the New Black), Tony Yazbeck (On the Town, Gypsy) Pat McCorkle (Broadway Casting Director), and William Finn (Tony Award-winning composer/lyricist Falsettos), among others. Directing and Choreography students have the opportunity to assist directors and choreographers such as John Rando, Sheryl Kaller, Jenn Thompson, Julianne Boyd, Jeffrey Page and Leah C. Gardiner.

KidsAct! participants

KIDSACT! KidsAct! is BSC's acclaimed theatre program for children. As an extension of BSC's emphasis on supporting the creation of original work, KidsAct! gives young students the opportunity to experience the process of writing and performing their own script. Due to the popularity of KidsACT! in 2017, we added a new program, entitled KidsAct! Senior. KidsAct! Senior was created for youth 11-14 and helps them to grow their performing skills. The students work on developing a monologue and song that they can use for auditions. Performance skills become the focus and they take the next step towards professional theatre. KidsAct! Junior (ages 7-10) is a fun and playful environment, where students collaborate to create an original play with music. KidsAct! Jr. builds performance skills in a noncompetitive environment. KidsAct! not only develops theatre skills but also builds self-esteem, encourages collaboration, and helps awaken each child's creativity. Each session culminates in a public performance on the last day. Needbased scholarships are available.

PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Professional Internship Program offers college students and recent graduates handson experience in the day-to-day operation of a professional theatre season. Each summer, internships are offered in stage management, arts management and administration, box office, education, lighting, sound, painting, carpentry and many more departments. Interns also take professional development classes in a wide range of theatre subjects.

OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE AWARD-WINNING BSC received the 2015 Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Commonwealth Award for Creative Youth Development for its range of quality educational programs.

In 2007, BSC was awarded the Coming Up Taller Award from the President's Committee on the Arts & Humanities, the nation's highest honor for after-school programs in the arts and humanities.

YOUTH THEATRE Now in its 20 year, Youth Theatre is designed to extend the professionalism of our Mainstage to local youth. Under a professional director and choreographer, students mount a full-scale musical theatre production that is presented 7-8 times a week for a 3-week run. Cast members also have the opportunity to engage in numerous community outreach activities and take master classes with industry professionals. The Youth Theatre program teaches discipline, fosters collaboration, and provides an opportunity for Berkshire youth who are passionate about the arts to receive professional training and mentorship. th

STUDENT MATINEE/SCHOOL RESIDENCY PROGRAM In the fall, approximately 2,000 junior high and high school students have the opportunity to participate in a thematic in-school workshop with a teaching artist and then attend a play and talk back with the cast and creative team at Barrington Stage Company's Mainstage.

Teachers also receive study guides with information and in-class activities related to the play.

BSC provides subsidized tickets for high school students to attend our fall show. We also offer free in-classroom, pre-show workshops for many of the students. This year's play, Patrick Hamilton's Gaslight, deals with mind manipulation that displays a form of bullying that is relevant and topical to students today.

SUPPORT BSC Barrington Stage Company is a professional not-for-profit 501(c)(3) regional theatre serving an annual audience of more than 56,000 and producing plays, musicals and cabarets in four venues: Boyd-Quinson Mainstage, St. Germain Stage, Mr. Finn’s Cabaret and Youth Theatre at the Berkshire Museum.

Based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Barrington Stage is an integral part of the city’s economic revitalization, offering productions and educational programs, including our award-winning Playwright Mentoring Project for underserved youth.

A number of our exceptional productions have moved to New York while many others have played around the country and even internationally. Over the last 18 years, we have produced 28 world premieres and have given new, energized life to a wide-range of classic musicals and plays.
