Providing the first steps of a holistic learning experience by embracing the
Corvian Community School was founded in 2010 on a vision to fill a gap in the educational system and better reach children by providing an innovative educational experience. The public charter school broke ground on its fourth and final project: a new, out-of-ground elementary school designed to provide students in grades K-4 with the school’s signature hands-on learning experiences and growth opportunities.
A premium learning facility
Spanning 46,000 square feet across two stories, Corvian Elementary includes 24 state-of-the-art classrooms, an event/theatrical space, modern student and staff dining areas, a fully equipped media center and a pre-engineered gymnasium. The space was thoughtfully designed to maximize space for student learning while balancing out additional needs, including community-oriented spaces such as the multipurpose area and gymnasium, and administrative/faculty-focused areas. The new building includes several unique and mentally stimulating elements for children, including a dedicated visual arts classroom and a two-story atrium linked by a custom-built tree slide inspired by the school’s logo.

Beating the bell to expand a private charter school’s campus with the addition of a brandnew high school facility just in time for the school year
Established in Charlotte in 2010, Corvian Community School was founded to fill a gap in the educational system and better reach children by providing an innovative, private educational experience that melds the arts, health, and wellness, among other offerings. Just eight years after its founding, the school added a new 70,0000-square-foot stateof-the-art high school on its 10-acre campus, furthering its ability to impact and positively grow students’ minds in the community.
The 16-classroom high school represents a new model for learning, with unique amenities including a black-box theatre, innovation lab/ maker space, art studio with kiln, open concept learning seminar spaces, amphitheater-style grand stair, collaborative media space, and open ceilings throughout. These non-traditional amenities are part of Corvian’s mission to develop the whole child by addressing the needs of each student.

The project involved transforming an empty space behind the reception area into individual offices and a state-of-the-art crafting studio dedicated to 3D printing. The studio required two exhaust hoods to handle the burning plastic, and careful infection control measures were implemented to protect valuable computers and books in the adjacent library. The library itself was reimagined with a flexible swing space and classroom, maintaining functionality while still being in use by students. Despite the noise-sensitive environment, the team successfully executed selective demolition, installed fresh finishes, and made crucial safety upgrades—all while ensuring minimal disruption.
This renovation project faced a series of unique challenges, including the unexpected arrival of Hurricane Helene during construction. With no potable water available, the team had to come up with creative solutions to ensure the comfort and safety of everyone on-site, including water bottles and portable restrooms. The project had to be paused for two weeks, causing delays that spilled over into finals week for students, adding to the complexity of the work.

As Davidson College prepared to renovate its existing library, the need for a reliable and compliant storage solution became urgent. This project delivered three pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMBs), each carefully sized to stay below square footage thresholds that would trigger more complex permitting and fire safety codes. One building was designed to house temporary library and office space, while the other two were fully outfitted for shelf storage, serving as a secure home for the college’s book collection during the renovation and later transitioning into long-term ancillary storage.
To protect the integrity of early book transfers, a rental dehumidification system was brought in to ensure climate control was operational from day one. The team faced a tight timeline, with another project waiting on this one’s completion. Rain delays added pressure, but through close coordination with Patterson Pope, particularly around the installation of a specialized rail system, the team kept the schedule on track. The result is a flexible, code-compliant storage solution that meets Davidson’s immediate needs and supports its future growth.

Preserving a nearly 100-year-old church in Charlotte’s historic district
The seat of the Roman Catholic Church in Charlotte, The Cathedral of Saint Patrick is a nearly 100-year-old establishment located in the city’s historic district. In early 2023, Saint Patrick’s underwent significant renovations to update the interior of the church as well as some restorative infrastructure work to the exterior of the building to preserve it for the next 100 years.
The project team worked closely with church leadership to determine the original elements of the church that were to remain intact. The interior upfit included a complete plaster rebuild and minor demolition of existing walls and mechanical heaters to open the space. Aesthetically, special care was taken to preserve the look and feel of the original structure while giving the interior a much-needed refresh. New paint was added throughout, and new wood flooring was installed to match the existing floors. All work was completed without disturbing historic elements.

Spanning 85,000 square feet across five stories, the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center of Hope serves as the anchor of all campus activities. True to its name, this new space was thoughtfully designed to offer a multitude of amenities for all: a full, multi-use gymnasium with bleacher seating up to 100 to house church sporting activities; a welcoming hospitality suite for ministry groups; a state-of-the-art assembly hall that offers space for church events like youth gatherings, small concerts and community events; a plethora of breakout spaces, classrooms and offices; a community café; and an outdoor terrace with sweeping views of uptown Charlotte.
From the start, the project team faced a long list of logistical challenges - the main one being building such a large footprint on a tight site that sat so close to their existing buildings and adjacent to one of the city’s busiest intersections. The team met frequently to update logistics plans that continuously evolved to meet needs of both the church and the construction schedule, ensuring both could progress safely while keeping the rest of the campus operational with minimal disruptions to regular activities like worship services, daycare and weddings.

A new two-story, mixed-use addition to an existing church, thoughtfully designed to serve as both a flexible gathering space and a vibrant community life center for youth. This dynamic project features a welcoming coffee bar, creating an inviting space for church members and the surrounding community to connect.
Situated on a constrained construction site, meticulous planning was critical to minimize disruptions. With an active preschool operating on-site, the project team prioritized safety and accessibility, ensuring carpool operations continued smoothly throughout the build.
To stay within budget, value engineering strategies were utilized, such as optimizing material selection, refining design elements for cost efficiency, and collaborating closely with contractors to identify innovative solutions.
