Team Barossa members will be out in full force come January 25 for the Bupa Challenge Tour as cycling enthusiasts get the chance to tackle the same route as the pros. Among those to tackle the 127 kilometre trek from Modbury is Tanunda’s Guy Draper. “I am not in there to compete against other people, I will compete against myself and will ride with other Team Barossa people,” said Guy. “You get to gauge your ability by being out there with so many people.” Numbers for the annual event, held in conjunction with the Santos Tour Down Under, remain strong with many keen to embrace the opportunity. Ms Jodi Pfitzner, Event Manager, Bupa Challenge Tour said the response for the event was strong, particularly as people want to experience the Barossa and get involved. Guy expects the first part of the ride to be a challenge, particularly the climb through to One Tree Hill and onto Kersbrook. He said the key is to conserve the energy for the remainder of the course. Tanunda’s Tony Codrington has compiled a programme for Team Barossa members and others who are keen to ride the trek. Scheduled over 20 weeks, it has been designed to help riders build the distance and challenges. “This year we don’t have Checker Hill or Menglers Hill, the challenging sections in the past,” said Guy. “The key to the ride is to not get carried away as soon as you think you have got through the early stages.” Guy said wind directions and weather will also play a part for Bupa Challenge riders. “Ride at your pace, that’s an important thing,” said Guy. “A challenge like Bupa, it is easy to get S caught up in groups that come past you and start riding a little out of your comfort zone.” Hydration in the days leading up to the race in addition to carb loading and eating right, are among Guy’s tips for Bupa participants. Bupa Challenger riders will start at Modbury at 6.30 a.m., Kersbrook 7 a.m., Mount Pleasant 7.30 a.m. or undertake a 20 kilometre route from Nuriootpa at 11 a.m. S The finish arch will be at Murray Street, Tanunda with riders converging on Tanunda Oval once completed.
