People of Faith - A vision to serve
Many of the key leaders and contributors responsible for the establishment of Faith Lutheran College still remain in the Barossa today. As Faith celebrates the milestone of 30 years there is much to celebrate and many of the pioneers nurse and happily re-tell fond memories of an exciting and vibrant time when the school commenced from humble beginnings in temporary facilities in the car park of St John’s Lutheran Church in Tanunda. Some of these pioneers included Ken Semmler - the chair of the original governing body; Brian Eckermann - the founding principal; Mike Leske and Dennis Canute – two of the first teachers. When Gavan Cramer (who retired as principal at the end of 2014) raised the idea of commissioning a history to be published as part of Faith’s 30th birthday celebrations, an opportunity existed to capture the memories and experiences of the pioneers. Richard Hauser, an educational historian and former Lutheran teacher and principal, was commissioned to document the College’s history. Richard spent considerable time in 2014 visiting the College, learning about the Faith community and doing research from College archives. Most valuable to the author, however, was interviewing the people who had been major players in the Faith story for more than thirty years. He found that this was where the heart of the College’s history was to be found, in the visions and aspirations of its community, the people of Faith. The author was thoroughly impressed with what he discovered. First, there were the passionate locals who had worked countless hours volunteering their services and expertise to make
the College became a reality. There were stories of attending meetings, donating money and goods, providing machinery and labour at working bees, opening homes for fund-raising, visiting congregations to promote the cause and praying openly for the dream to come to life. Apart from generous volunteers, there were also the teachers and other staff who came to serve at Faith. They were an impressive team, idealistic and committed to a dream of establishing a quality secondary school with an ethos based on Christian beliefs and permeated

by values like care and service. They worked tirelessly, did more than was required of them and had a lot of fun along the way. They inspired one another and the synergy they created became larger than the sum of their talents. The College became an intoxicating place to work, long before it introduced its wine programme! And most importantly, there were the students and their families. Good families make good schools and this soon became evident at Faith. From its open locker system to its ambience
of cheerful goodwill, a positive learning environment and climate of creativity, a special educational institution was born. History now reveals that many Faith College graduates have progressed to achieve wonderful outcomes for themselves, their families and their communities - many of them harbouring the faith and values which had been nurtured throughout their time at the College. ‘ The People of Faith’, which will be launched as part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations, records the history of Faith Lutheran College through the stories of its people. It is an inspiring and compelling read.

People of Faith...Care at its best Since the inception of Faith Lutheran Secondary School, equal importance has been placed on academic achievement and learning, as well as ensuring the wellbeing of each and every student as they progress through their academic and life journey. Faith Lutheran College has always been committed to caring for the inner needs of students as they experience social, psychological and emotional challenges, and it is this commitment to caring for all members of the community that sets Faith apart. At the very heart of the College is a deep spirituality. A spirituality based on the Christian belief that we are connected to a loving and living God. A God who cares, understands, forgives and works to build, restore and develop loving relationships. It is on the basis of this belief that the College works with students and their families to face difficulties, listen to concerns, provide support and build a strong and vibrant community where people can experience grace, love and a sense of peace and belonging. ‘Care at its best’ does not however mean
dealing only with the painful and negative. It also means continually working to build on the richness that comes from living in community. Faith Lutheran College embraces the challenge to positively impact the lives of students and families. It is evidenced through the unique and widely acclaimed Village care approach, the provision of a full time Director of Wellbeing and the appointment of a qualified student Counsellor who is accessible to students throughout the day. The staff of Faith are committed to building tomorrow’s leaders who are able to successfully navigate their way through a variety of challenges. The College team believe that offering students opportunities to involve themselves in a number of programmes, both in and out of school time; will assist them in becoming global citizens who have a deep care, compassion and respect for others. Innovative programmes offered by the College include ‘Unearth’ (Music based resiliency programme), Butterfly Effect for girls, Wellness Coaching for boys, Driver
Awareness Days (RYDA) for senior students, ‘gratitude’ units during Village Care Group sessions, Mental Health/Wellbeing days, Digital Citizen awareness days with guests including Sonya Ryan of the Carly Ryan Foundation, and values discussions within small group settings. The College recognises that an important aspect of being a ‘College with a heart’ involves engaging parents and assisting them in their primary role as caregivers. A range of speakers are regularly invited into the College to discuss issues of significance such as Mental Health, ‘Party Safe’, Cyber awareness and digital footprints. Faith Lutheran College is committed to being a ‘College with a heart’, caring for the inner struggles, challenges and pressures that adolescent students face. The well developed and extensive programme offered at the College is clear evidence of the commitment that staff have to creating a unique South Australian education institution which recognises the indisputable link between wellbeing and learning.

‘Community’ has always been a key ingredient of Barossa life. It should not be surprising then that the founders of Faith Lutheran School saw ‘community’ as an essential aspect of the vision for the school. Today, continuing to protect, nurture and further develop the sense of community that exists within the College remains a high priority. The sense of community spirit, care and respect within the College is tangible. It is without doubt one of the things that sets Faith apart. From the earliest days, Faith created a very unique system which would not only allow staff to manage and care for students but also develop a deep sense of community within the school. Students were organised into ‘Vertical Care Groups’ known as ‘Villages’. Each Village was named after one of the Barossa’s early village settlements and each group consisted of students from Year 8 through to Year 12. Today Village Care Groups are still in operation and certainly build a sense of togetherness, family and community. The founders of the College also had a clear vision that young people and staff had a responsibility to be a part of the local Barossa community and to actively contribute and ‘give back’ to the community. This belief was deeply founded in the Christian faith and Lutheran tradition. On this basis the decision was made that during Year 9 and Year 11, students would be timetabled to do community work in local schools, Crèches, private homes and Aged Care facilities. That programme, which broke new ground, is still working today. In quantitative terms it is not easy to define the educational value of asking students to step outside of their comfort zones and move away from the prescribed courses. The students themselves, however, are quick to
acknowledge the relevance and personal growth they find in being involved in the many facets of community work. With the continual development of the College site and particularly with the advent of the Barossa Arts and Convention Centre, the College had the opportunity to open itself to the wider Barossa community. To this day it is not unusual to see football, cricket, hockey, tennis and dance clubs utilising the College facilities. The changing nature of the world we live in means that in recent times Faith College has had to redefine the true meaning of the word ‘community’. While the College sits within the Barossa community it also plays an important role in being an active contributor in a global community. Since 2005, Faith College students have been part of biennial missions by SA Lutheran Schools to the Philippines, Cambodia and Indonesia to help build overseas communities. In that time roughly 200 SA students have headed overseas doing volunteer building work and close to $160,000 has been donated by them to pay for building materials. Recently, a Faith staff member was part of a teacher exchange with Triamudom Suksa School in Bangkok. Community education is now a global phenomenon. Faith Lutheran College is blessed to have advanced technological capacity and expertise within the College and as such students have almost immediate access to any community, experience or cultural norm across the globe. In essence, Faith Lutheran College is a community within itself, sits within and serves a community, and increasingly is a recognised contributor to the global community.

People of Faith…Celebrate through the Arts We are turning ‘Thirty something’ The great Christian academic and writer C.S.Lewis once said: ‘Thirty was so strange for me. I’ve really had to come to terms with the fact that I am now a walking and talking adult.” We are proud to say that this year, after making it through infancy, childhood, the teenage years and young adulthood, Faith reaches the mature age of thirty. Yes, it is our birthday and we would love you to come! We have, as Lewis reflected, become a ‘walking and talking adult’. What a milestone to celebrate with the Barossa Community and beyond; a celebration of the wonderful support the College has had over the years. And, like so many people do at important milestones, we want to look back as well as forward to our bright future and share that with our community. ‘Alumnite’ is Faith’s 30th Anniversary Concert. It is a celebration of the past, present and future of Faith and in particular the Performing Arts. It’s also our way of joining together with our community to celebrate with them. ‘Alumnite’ features a number of Faith old scholars who have excelled in their chosen fields. Together with them we will weave our way through a diverse selection of numbers, some of which reflect our rich tradition of performance at Faith and some which celebrate the achievements
of those on the stage. The evening will feature the talented Dan Koek, who has an impressive list of musical theatre credits to his name including recently starring as Jean Valjean in ‘Les Miserable’ in London’s West End. Dan has also just released his first album ‘High’. We are also privileged to have Eleanor Blythman who has carved out a career with a string of credits including a lead role with the Australian Opera and a stint in London’s West End production of ‘Phantom of the Opera’. They will lead a stellar cast of some of Faith’s brightest alumni, among them guitarist, Joel Zimmermann; singer/ songwriter, Sam Brittain; vocalist, Blake Parham; the talented Matt Launer; violinist, Nathan Elul; wonderful Robert Bell and Celeste Hueppauff, and a host of dancers, musicians and singers who have made their mark. Even more special is that they will share the stage with some of our current crop of amazingly talented students. You are all invited to come and join us for a fantastic evening of entertainment. You will be amazed, as we are, how much talent has passed through the College. It will be good to have them home, and who knows - you may even be witness to some future stars about whom you will be able to say: “I remember when I saw them in ‘Alumnite’.”

30th Anniversary 1985-2014
People of Faith...Living in the new world The modern day school is certainly a very different institution to that in which previous generations were educated. Today the focus of quality schooling is on preparing students to be global citizens, life-long learners and deep analytical thinkers. Modern educational institutions understand that each student learns differently and therefore there must be a much sharper focus on treating students as unique individuals and working with them collaboratively to help them be successful as learners and contributors. Faith Lutheran College has always placed great importance on developing each child, and as such, the College boasts a wonderful learning culture and outstanding academic performance. The College has a clear culture of care and respect and together the community shares the view that education is something to be valued and cherished. Faith is committed to ‘educating students for life’. Student academic performance at Faith has consistently been strong over the years as was evidenced again in 2014 with the College’s most recent graduates. The graduating class collectively gained 20 merit awards – an outstanding result by any measure. A third of the students in the graduating class achieved an ATAR score (University entrance score) of over 90 with over half of all students scoring an ATAR over 80. Alongside outstanding academic achievement, particularly for those students who desire to progress directly to the work force, Faith Lutheran College has established excellent partnerships with training providers with an emphasis on offering a broad range of industry relevant learning programmes and apprenticeships for Faith students. In this new modern education era, the learning environment at Faith Lutheran College also differs significantly from the educational institutions of the past. The learning that takes place and the facilities provided to students reflect a modern approach to education. An inquiry based curriculum takes advantage of teaching students not only knowledge but key skills required throughout life.

Academic rigour has always been and continues to be a key focus of the College. Facilities within the College are outstanding with many being described as ‘the best in the state’. State of the art and purpose-built learning facilities include the College’s Wine Education Centre, the recently opened Gladys Bartsch Music Suite, flexible learning spaces, and, of course, the Barossa Arts and Convention Centre. In addition to the academic curriculum, Faith Lutheran College places great importance on developing the ‘whole person’. As such, a wide range of enrichment programmes are offered across the College. These programmes include such things as ‘Peer Support’ and ‘Christian Studies’. These enrichment experiences offer students an opportunity to explore their beliefs and personal values and begin to form a ‘world view’ which will guide future living and service. These programmes also challenge students to consider ways in which they can contribute to the local, national and global community through service learning and servant leadership. In focusing on the whole child, Faith Lutheran College also supports student’s mental health and wellbeing. Apart from providing school based counsellors and support staff to assist students as they grow and mature, the College has recently investigated the ‘Positive Psychology’ movement as a way of further supporting the welfare of students. Faith Lutheran College is seen as a leader in technology. Over the past four years students have been using technology as a learning tool in each and every class. The iPad programme challenges, motivates and extends student thinking and is having a profound impact on the delivery of education. In many respects Faith Lutheran College has moved from simply teaching the three ‘Rs’ to now being intentionally focused on also teaching the three C’s… curating, collaborating and creating. Faith Lutheran College is committed to equipping students with 21st Century learning skills. Faith has a well-developed curriculum programme which provides the explicit teaching of Integrated Learning Skills (ILS). This programme is believed to have a measurable positive influence on student learning. Coupled with this, another exciting initiative involves students working in ‘flat classrooms’ whereby they work with students from other schools on collaborative projects. Recently, classes at the College worked with their sister exchange school in New York on a collaborative assignment culminating in the production of a video presentation as a part of the shared learning. This is global citizenship being lived out at Faith Lutheran College. The College is continually seeking to enrich the learning culture and provide support for students through technological innovation. The Faith Lutheran College ‘App’ provides diary, timetable and communication information to students and parents. Initiatives such as these combined with learning management computer based application tools continue to keep Faith at the cutting edge of eLearning. With professional, committed staff and a clear vision for the future, Faith Lutheran College is well placed to embrace the ‘brave new world’ of education as it serves students and prepares them to be global citizens – collaborators, contributors and life-long learners.

People of Faith...Pathways to the future

the e r ’ We am at te
In the era that we live, young people face incredible pressures to make subject selections and to choose potential career paths well in advance of completing their secondary education. Supporting students to make appropriate decisions, to help them consider all of their alternative options and to ensure a successful transition from school to further learning or work is something Faith Lutheran College does with distinction. Faith Lutheran College has long been recognised as a leader in helping students to plan for and design future pathways. Faith has always been committed to preparing and supporting the future pathways of its students. The College provides a dedicated Future Pathways Office with both a Careers Co-ordinator and a VET Coordinator to assist students to plan and achieve their post school pathways. The Careers office is a hub of activity which hosts: information sessions, meetings with students, parents, local businesses and private training providers. Career education and guidance is crucial in secondary schooling. The Future Pathways Office provides students with: Work Experience opportunities, University and TAFE presentations, attendance at University open days and Career expos, a scheduled Work Experience programme with the Adelaide and Monarto Zoo and the SA Police Office in Nuriootpa, gap year opportunities, Year 12 SATAC counselling, Year 10 VIQ counselling, scholarships, awards and Years 8 to 12 counselling. Also offered is a range of Parent Information evenings including a ‘Parent as Career Partners’ evening analysing the Year 10 Vocational Interest Questionnaire. As part of each student’s Personal Learning Plan (PLP), Mock Interview events are held for all Year 10 students where local businesses generously offer their time to support student learning. Students of the College are always well prepared to meet with perspective employers with a Personal Portfolio containing: their Resumes, Letters of
Application and a record of all their achievements. Although many College students progress to tertiary education at University or TAFE (approximately 85%) many also successfully enter apprenticeships, full or part-time employment, the Defence Force and other training providers. Faith Lutheran College strongly believes in providing students with a holistic career education to explore and pursue various pathways whilst achieving SACE and a competitive ATAR (university entrance score) through an extensive variety of subjects and alternative pathways. Alternative pathways include: Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses and School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs). Faith Lutheran College students over the years have undertaken School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships in: Agriculture, Automotive, Business, Carpentry, Electrotechnology, Hairdressing and Retail. The School Based Apprentices complete SACE and become fulltime apprentices after leaving school. Faith’s teachers deliver VET courses under an arrangement with TAFESA. Many VET courses are delivered at Faith and include: Certificate I in Agrifoods, Certificate I in Hospitality, Certificate II in Community Activities, Certificate II in Live Production and Services and units from Certificate II in Construction and Certificate III in Christian Ministry, which is timetabled and delivered on campus under the auspice of the Australian Centre for Advanced Studies. The College has established valuable partnerships with community organisations, which support the College’s VET programmes, such as: Greenock Uniting Church – Connections Coffee Shop, The REX Barossa Aquatics Fitness Centre, Barossa Arts and Convention Centre and Crossroads Family Learning Centre. In addition other VET courses are delivered at Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), where students are off campus one day per week to undertake Certificates in: Agriculture, Aged Care, Automotive, Business, Beauty Services, Children’s Services, Carpentry, Electrotechnology, Fitness,

Hospitality, Information, Digital Media and Technology, and Plumbing. All VET courses attract SACE credits, thus enabling students to study a variety of subjects throughout their schooling years whilst still achieving their SACE and obtaining an ATAR. The Future Pathway staff at the College support all students with regular counselling, mentoring and workplace visits. The College works closely with local businesses and industries and appreciates their continual support of our students. Work Placement and Work Experience play an integral part of vocational education and Faith students enjoy a wide variety of placements in the Barossa and across South Australia. These placements not only provide valuable insight and experience but can also lead to apprenticeships and employment.

30th Anniversary 1985-2014
People of Faith... Fostering the traditions of the land Faith Lutheran Secondary School was developed on the site of a rundown vineyard, cleared in the early 1980’s under the Government driven Vine Pull Scheme. The founders of Faith, when planning the establishment of the school, were keen to have Agriculture as an essential component of the curriculum. From very humble beginnings, the Faith Agriculture faculty had the challenging task of not only establishing Agriculture as a viable option amongst the range of subjects offered but also developing facilities from scratch in order to be able to demonstrate and undertake relevant practical activities. From 1986 staff, parents and friends of the fledgling school gradually developed the necessary sheds, fences, yards, orchard and vineyard to enable the establishment of various farm enterprises such as sheep, meat goats, beef cattle, meat chickens, vines, wine, crops and pastures. Today Faith Lutheran College is respected and widely acknowledged as offering an exceptional Agriculture programme. Faith Lutheran College is one of very few schools to run two Year 12 Agriculture classes and currently has the largest cohort of Year 12 Agricultural Science students in South Australia. A highlight for the College came last year when Leah Zimmermann was the only student to achieve a Merit in 2014 for Agricultural Principles in South Australia. Currently nearly 40% of the College’s 674 students
are electing to study Agriculture, at various year levels, as part of their secondary education. A clear sign of the quality of the Agriculture programme on offer at Faith Lutheran College is the numerous graduates who have progressed into tertiary study in Agricultural Science, Oenology, Viticulture, Veterinary Science as well as a significant number entering the workforce in farm or rural related careers. In addition to this, Faith has also focussed on vocational education with students able to achieve a Certificate 1 in Agri-Food Operations by successfully completing units embedded in the Faith Agriculture Programme. Faith Agriculture has been an active exhibitor in the Royal Adelaide and local country shows. Over the years Faith has been particularly successful in the Open section at the Royal Adelaide Show in the Led Steer Competition. Since 1996 Faith has gained a total of 8 Grand Champion ribbons making it the most successful exhibitor in the Led Steer competition. Goats, Merino Wethers and poultry have also been exhibited with a good level of success. The willingness of top breeders to provide quality animals for Faith students to prepare and exhibit has greatly contributed to the success of the programme. Over the last 30 years Faith Lutheran College has developed a strong, vibrant and relevant Agriculture faculty.

People of Faith...Living Music Embracing digital technologies to enhance learning is a challenge but a challenge that the College has never been afraid to grasp. Faith supports this new era of music education through experiences in recording and sound production with a true 21st Century approach. The College offers a Certificate II in Live Production and offers opportunities for live sound reinforcement through major musical events and productions. In addition, many students choose to study Composing or Music Technology through to Year 12 and then progress to tertiary studies. Faith Lutheran College encourages students to explore significant opportunities for performance either as a soloist or part of a larger or small ensemble group. Over many years, groups have performed for community events, charities, Mount Gambier Jazz Festivals, Eisteddfods, Magnolia Fare and many other performances on request. Students gain valuable skills in confidence, performance and citizenship and, of course, build strong relationships within the community. All Instrumental teachers at the College are performers themselves and have extensive music industry experience. Students at the College have a unique opportunity to work with experienced performers willing to pass on their skills, knowledge and musicianship to students in an incredibly supportive environment. Faith Lutheran College boasts a dynamic, passionate and committed music staff who are focused on bringing the latest in music education into the curriculum. Music classrooms at Faith are vibrant and positive environments where students feel supported to try their best and take risks in performance, explore new ideas and creative thinking. Music plays a significant role in a student’s life at the College and prepares students for a future where music continues to play an important role in society and the lives of individuals.

From the very beginning Music has played an important role at Faith Lutheran College. Music is more than just a performance; it is an experience that can often express more than words alone and connect on a deeply emotional level. From the humble beginnings of a small classroom for band rehearsing and instrumental tuition, the students’ experience now incorporates, choirs, jazz and symphonic ensembles, small chamber ensembles, concert bands and contemporary groups. The opportunities for students are exciting and the depth of the music programme is a testament to many years of development and tireless work. The music experience at Faith Lutheran College is not just about performing but building the right skills for a life-time of playing. Many students have progressed onto further tertiary studies in classical, jazz and contemporary performing or education. Other students have successfully transitioned into the music industry and are making significant impact in the Australian music scene. The newly constructed Gladys Bartsch Music Centre has been respectfully named after a person who had a lifetime of commitment and passion in music. At Faith, it is clear that the staff and students alike are carrying on that musical tradition through innovative programmes in music education and music experiences. One aspect of the curriculum now focuses on using new technologies to support classroom learning. Students are now able to compose, perform and record music in an on-site music recording studio. These rich experiences enable Faith music students to develop skills that are not just for today but also for the future. Differing from previous times, today’s music students have easy access to music technologies like iPad’s, computers and mobile devices. Film scores and symphonic pieces are now being created on mobile technology. Music has gone mobile!

Lobethal Lutheran School wishes Faith Lutheran College all the very best for their 30th Anniversary celebrations. We congratulate Faith on all their achievements and wish them well in the future. Lobethal Lutheran School is a feeder school to Faith Lutheran College
People of Faith … Working in the vines The Faith Lutheran College Agriculture Faculty has always been committed to undertaking rural enterprises relevant to the Barossa Valley. Viticulture has had a major emphasis in the Agriculture programme from the inception of the school. In the early 1990’s a one Hectare Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard was planted. This asset enabled students to gain experience pruning, establishing cover crops, monitoring for disease and determining fruit ripeness ready for harvest. The natural progression to include winemaking as part of the Agriculture programme (in 1993) resulted in small batches of red wine being made by students. With St. Hallett Wines owning a vineyard neighbouring the Faith property, a working relationship was developed with Head Winemaker and Faith parent, Stuart Blackwell who mentored the College’s Agriculture staff to develop their ability to oversee the winemaking process. Premium Eden Valley Shiraz was also donated to the school by parents Bruce and Lorna Doecke. This parcel of fruit enabled students to grow to a scale where a small number of barrels were produced. By 1995 the College gained a Grower Producer Licence and began marketing the wine under the Mengler View label. The Mengler View name was used as the Mengler Hill lookout is visible from Faith and from the lookout, the Faith Lutheran College property is clearly seen. Ironically, it was only after the wine project was named that it became evident that there was in fact a Mengler View Winery that operated in the late 1890’s. The winery was operated by the Mengler brothers, which was located near the house of the late Mrs Edna Marschall (nee Mengler). She was the last surviving member of the Mengler family in the Barossa. Over a fifteen year period she was a generous donor of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit to the Mengler View programme. Barossa Wine industry support was developed with
AP John Coopers who provided all barrel requisites and enabled students to work with quality oak. Vinpac International provided all dry-good requisites needed by the College for their programme. After a small number of vintages of students bottling the fruits of their labour, it was obvious that vacuum filling of bottles was required to attain a quality assured product with Vinpac taking on this role. Barossa Printmasters supported the school with the printing of all labels with graphic artist, Quentin Falkenberg helping students develop quality label designs which met legal requirements. The Barons of the Barossa as well as the Barossa Wine Show have provided funding to help purchase various winery equipment to give students an industry standard experience. The Wine Education centre, built in 2002, was only possible through the generous support of a number of local companies. Bob Ahrens who was Chairman of Ahrens Engineering, oversaw the project from start to finish. Peter Hueppauff donated numerous weeks of labour to gyprock clad the internal structure and Rogasch Windows donated all of the aluminium doors and windows for the structure. A number of Barossa growers generously donate fruit for College students to work with. This has enabled students to also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 2006 cold room facilities constructed in the winery enabled students to tackle the challenge of making white wines and a Rose. This was only possible with the support of parents who provided Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling fruit. St Hallett Wines, for a number of years, also donated a parcel of Semillon . Since 1995, Faith has certainly been blessed to have had generous community and corporate support to enable the youth of the Barossa to gain a relevant, hands on experience of the wine industry.
