Neville and Elizabeth Jaeschke have approximately 450 Dahlia plants, representing all 17 types, growing in their Tanunda backyard. So it’s safe to say they know more about these beautiful blooms, flowering from late January to the beginning of May, than the average gardener. Neville is the Vice President of the Dahlia Society of SA and Elizabeth is the
Vice President of the Barossa Valley Floral Design Club and they have been growing Dahlias ‘seriously’ for more than 30 years. The couple are now recognised as “A Grade Exhibitors” and hope to one day win the fiercely contested Dahlia Society Grand Champion. Keen for others to discover the joy in growing Dahlias, Neville and Elizabeth encouraged people to enter their blooms
into the Tanunda Show. “The Dahlia sections are among the cut flowers for the first time this year,” said Neville who said they have returned to how it was prior to the 1950s. The Jaeschkes grow their Dahlias under 50% white shade cloth, they keep the soil damp and covered in mulch. They also disbud to improve the size and quality of flowers.
