Welcome to this new digital edition of your Mercedes-Benz magazine. Rest assured the content inside offers the same great features along with the most dynamic imagery we have ever produced for your enjoyment.

There is only one place to start this year and that is with the all-new A-Class, that redefines the segment upon which its incoming rivals will be hard pressed to compete. At the heart of this now class leading vehicle is Mercedes-Benz User Experience or MBUX for short. This is an entirely new way to interact with your Mercedes-Benz alongside a touch screen, steering control and console touchpad. MBUX has been developed amongst the brightest minds in Stuttgart and Silicone Valley which is pioneering the way for a readily usable voice assistant in passenger vehicles, allowing the user to control numerous vehicle functions with a simple voice command. The interaction is not one way, with the car providing feedback to you as it learns your habits and patterns to offer a driving experience that is tailored to you.

We also profile another one of the manufacturers most popular models of recent years, the face-lifted C-Class in Saloon, Estate, Cabriolet and CoupĂŠ variants.

Detractors may say that not much has changed but rest assured, it feels very different to its predecessor with a 10.25-inch screen dominating the cockpit.

The real difference is in the drive where the new C 180 joins the C 200 as an exciting entry level featuring the same 154bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine taken from the SLC. Diesel engines will include C 200 d and C 220 d with a more powerful C 300 d joining the range later this year, as will a C 300 petrol taken from the existing C-Class CoupĂŠ.

No matter what time of year we have a promotional diary that is always full, this issue reviews some of our latest events where our teams have taken some of our most popular models out to meet the public.

When Mercedes-Benz launched the current A-Class in 2012 it set a new standard for the premium compact class. With the introduction of the all-new A-Class, a new benchmark has now been set.

The all-new A-Class is just like you, recognising each driver’s unique preferences and style. The all-new A-Class is the launch platform for the new MBUX infotainment system that puts User Experience (UX) at the forefront of its functionality. A unique feature of this system is its ability to learn, due to artificial intelligence. MBUX can be individualised and adapted to suit the user. Just like a smartphone, you can set up a personal profile for each individual driver. The next time you get in the car, it knows what to do straight away.

The climate control, ambient lighting, seat position, music, display style and many more functions can all be set to just the way you like them. The mood feature can be set, where MBUX learns your habits. For example, if you make a phone call to your partner after work, MBUX will suggest the number to call and ask if you want to call it.

Thanks to natural speech recognition in MBUX, the voice control assistant obeys virtually every command, recognising nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation when compared to conventional voice control systems in cars that only respond to fixed commands. For example, asking MBUX, “Will the sun be shining

as easily understood as “Do I need sunglasses tomorrow in Norwich?”.

The interior has a greatly enhanced feeling of spaciousness with better all-round visibility.

The luggage compartment behind the rear seats is more suitable for family and recreational use, and has a capacity of 370 litres – 29 litres more than the preceding model. The loading aperture is 20 cm wider than before and the luggage compartment floor is 11.5 cm longer.

The all-new A-Class

The new A-Class is available with the choice in 3 trim levels, Sport, SE and AMG Line with the AMG Line being offered on 18-inch wheels and sharper, more aggressive looks. At launch there will be three four-cylinder engines to choose from; the introductory A 180 and A 200 features a petrol 1.4-litre unit delivering 160bhp with the A 200 offering cylinder deactivation. The more powerful A 250 uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine, offering 221bhp. As the performance leader of the launch

range, it is claimed to have a 0-62mph time of 6.2 seconds and a governed 155mph top speed.

The sole diesel choice from launch is the A 180 d, which uses a redeveloped 1.5-litre unit, now delivering 114bhp, with significantly increased refinement. The manufacturer continues to push boundaries in styling upon which the all-new A-Class features class-leading aero dynamics with a drag coefficient of 0.25, that is extremely impressive for a hatchback.

Announced back at February’s Geneva Motor Show the popular C-Class has unveiled a recent refresh to its Saloon and Estate variants with the Coupé and Cabriolet models following soon after with a reveal at the New York Motor Show. The most successful model series from Mercedes-Benz is entering its fifth year in production with extensive modifications. The design of the exterior and interior benefits from a stylish makeover and an electronic architecture that is completely new.

The customer benefits from a user experience with an optional digital instrument display. The assistance systems have now

progressed to the level of those found in the S‑Class range.

The new-look C-Class combines emotionality with intelligence. The vehicle’s appearance is defined in particular by its front and the design of the headlamps and taillights. With the model facelift, the AMG Line features the diamond radiator grille as standard. The front bumpers have been redesigned across all model lines. These new designs render an even more expressive exterior and dynamic character.

The sporty interior exudes class, featuring flowing forms in a new interpretation of modern luxury.

The 3D real wood veneer in the centre console combines handcrafted character with a modern feel. The Multicontour Seat package is new; with this package, the side bolsters and lumbar support is individually adjusted by means of an electrically driven pneumatic pump. A massage effect in the lumbar area is provided by air chambers, which are inflated and deflated in a pulsing or wave-like motion when the function is activated.

Optional equipment that enhances all variants includes a new 12.3in high-definition digital instrument display offering three themes (Classic, Sport and Progressive), a revised

multi-function steering wheel with touchpad controls operates DISTRONIC and cruise control with controls directly on the steering wheel being another new feature and a touchpad controller. The infotainment system features a beautifully proportioned 10.25-inch freestanding infotainment display and can be operated via the touchpad with controller (with new haptic feedback) in the centre console or by means of LINGUATRONIC voice control.

The optional head-up display is now adjustable over an even wider range. KEYLESS-GO is now standard across the range.

The C-Class COMAND infotainment system has been upgraded to the same standard as that used by the recently

updated S-Class. However, it forgoes the touchscreen control and connectivity functions of the system found in the new A-Class. Borrowing further from the higher end Mercedes-Benz models, ‘Energising Comfort Control’; a system which uses the air-conditioning, perfumed scent, seat heating, ventilation and massage functions to improve driver well-being is an option that will ensure upon every drive you will reach your destination refreshed and energised. The C-Class also offers optional smartphone integration supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink, as well as a wireless charging pad.

It will also be offered with the new Remote Parking Pilot and Driving Assistance Package Plus system.

From launch, SE, Sport and AMG Line trims are offered with a choice from the C 200 and C 180 petrol variants, with the latter being, a new entry-level option featuring the same 154bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine taken from the SLC. Diesel engines will include C 200 d and C 220 d with A more

powerful C 300 d joining the range later this year, as will a C 300 petrol.

Both variants offer completely new engines. A new generation of fourcylinder petrol engines will be launched in the new C-Class. At the same time, these models are equipped with an additional

48-volt on-board network with a belt-driven starter/ alternator (EQ Boost). The combination of this 48-volt on-board network and EQ Boost creates the conditions for additional functions that help to reduce fuel consumption even further, while improving agility, comfort characteristics and offering near instant torque.

A legend updated.

The G-Class is made from a unique DNA. This all-new variant is built for extreme challenges and ready to create history. What will be immediately obvious is that the designers have kept the popular look and feel of the manufacturers longest-standing model.

The G-Class (also known as the G-Wagen) has been on sale in pretty much the same form since 1979. Enjoying its best year of registrations last year; and uniquely, more Mercedes-AMG G 63s are sold than any other versions, accounting for 65 per cent of UK sales in 2017.

Fans of the iconic G-Class design will be relieved that it keeps many of its most famous features. That includes the characteristic door handles, external door hinges and the spare wheel mounted on the rear door, however the

reversing camera is no longer blocked by the spare wheel being placed in a lower position.

The camera is waterproof allowing for it to be submerged. What has changed is that the new model is 53mm longer and 121mm wider, while the wheel arches and bumpers have been designed to look more like integral parts of the body.

The biggest updates come under the skin and in the cabin, although it’s a deliberate mix of modern twinned with vintage G-Class styling.

Despite all the technology, some details are carried over, such as the passenger grab handle and the chrome-trimmed switches for the differential locks, even the sound of the door closing has been retained alongside exterior faux door hinges to keep the unmistakable G-Class feeling.

Two customisable 12.3-inch high-res screens sit side-by-side on the dash, displaying a plethora of information to the driver, especially useful when navigating unforgiving terrain. As with other high-end models in the portfolio, a rotary controller and touchpad-style controls are used, meaning the new variant has a trim and comfort level of that similar to S-Class and E-Class making it stand out choice from its rivals.

Thanks to the increase in size, there’s more space inside the G-Class. The front and rear seats have increased shoulder room and elbow room, while legroom in the rear has grown by 150mm. The seats are designed to be more comfortable and practical, with individual folding rear seats, plus heated, cooled and massaging front seats are optional.

Despite all this, the big news is the development of a new platform, although still a classic ladder-frame construction.

Thanks to independent suspension, the car is more comfortable on the road and more capable off it; ground clearance and fording

depth, as well as the departure, approach and break-over angles, have all been increased too. The test bed for the G-Class is Schöckl mountain, Graz, where rigorous development of the G-Class takes place and is pushed to the limits. A new seal has been added to the door sills in every new G-Class stating ‘Schöckl Approved’ meaning this model is approved for the toughest of terrains.

For on-road driving, the G-Class has the familiar Dynamic Select system that allows the driver to choose between various driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual – to tailor the responses of the steering, throttle and transmission. Adaptive damping is also an option; it allows for a ‘G-Mode’ that promises improved off-road ability, and is activated automatically when the low-range gears are selected or one of the three differential locks is activated.

The stronger all-round performance will be helped by the fact that the new car is 170kg lighter than the old model, while the body is also stiffer, which helps to improve refinement and safety.

Smart just got smarter.

All electric smart models will belong to Daimler’s dedicated Electric Vehicle label EQ from now on as opposed to the previous Electric-Drive moniker. EQ stands for Electric Intelligence and is spearheading the manufacturers charge to have an electric variant in every model range by 2022. Daimler has used the EQ badge for the first time on its new smart fortwo and forfour special editions. Dubbed the smart fortwo and forfour EQ NightSky, the two fully electric hatchbacks are the first in Daimler’s EQ line-up, making their debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

the future and smart is no exception. In Geneva, the change was indicated with the NightSky edition for which the black lacquer is accented with EQ blue. Smart just got smarter

black finish, accented by what Daimler calls its “hallmark blue EQ paint finish,” or more accurately Pacific Blue.

Along with Brabus body panels, each smart EQ NightSky model comes with a unique set of 16inch Brabus wheels, and NightSky badging in the mirror triangle, as well as elsewhere throughout the cabin and on the exterior.

Alongside the new NightSky special edition, each smart EQ vehicle now features an optional fast-charging function that will allow the vehicle

to be recharged to 80 percent in just 40 minutes from completely empty. The range will have a companion mobile app that gives users access to services like charging times, locations, and battery life, among others.

The 22 kW on board charger for an electric smart will be an optional extra and being described as a “fast charging” option compared to plugging in at home or at work. The fastest way to charge your smart is by connecting it to a purpose-built wallbox using the supplied charging cable. Ideal for your garage, carport or company car park, a wallbox will charge the battery from 20-100% in just 3.5 hours. You can also charge your smart from any domestic power socket but it takes a little longer: 20-100% in around 6 hours.

You have probably noticed electric charging stations cropping up across the UK - from motorway services to supermarkets and public car parks. And they’re only going to become more commonplace as electric vehicles become more popular. Most of these charging stations support the Type 2 connector of your smart. Therefore, if your battery is running low, you will never have to look too far for a top-up.

A new digital companion, smart EQ Control is an app for your smartphone offering numerous “Connected Car” functions from viewing the remaining power left in your battery, predict driving range, charge status and a whole range of other information relating to your vehicle. You can also set the climate control while your smart is charging from the mains, so that your car is ready to go as soon as you are. Smart EQ Control is expected to be available before the end of 2018.

Over two scorching days in June, Mercedes-Benz of Norwich wowed onlookers at the Royal Norfolk Show with a selection of vehicles suited to the tastes of the crowds that attend the country’s biggest county show. Traditionally an agricultural and livestock show, the Royal Norfolk Show has grown into a show that celebrates the best of Norfolk as well as the surrounding areas with exhibitors travelling from far and wide to attend. Specialist foodstuffs sits alongside fashion, marine, retail and automotive industry’s making it a unique day out for visitors.

Mercedes-Benz of Norwich offered an exceptional automotive and retail experience for visitors comprising the latest technology and products which Stuttgart has to offer.

MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation is a function where the map display is enhanced with augmented reality. A live video image of the surrounding is taken with the aid of a front camera that is augmented with helpful navigation information such as arrows and directional information.

Inside our mobile store offered the latest merchandise, the ever popular Lewis Hamilton style caps, sat alongside other Mercedes items including AMG-Petronas inspired wears that always prove a hit with crowds. The racing simulator which was fiercely contested by staff prior to the event opening was a hit with visitors, bringing out the competitive edge amongst family and friends to see who was the quickest.
