Dear Friends,

15 October 2018

It is our honour and privilege to welcome you on behalf of all members of the committee to this special occasion once again.

This is our 30th year of celebration to worship goddess ‘Durga’, the Divine power for her blessings.

We gather every year at this auspicious time to worship mother ‘Durga’ with our families and friends to make this occasion a very enjoyable and special one. We also celebrate Lakshmi puja, Kali Puja and Saraswati puja.

You all have been very supportive of these events. Your presence and sincere cooperation will make the celebration a memorable one.

We celebrated the arrival of Bengali New Year (Nabobarsho) on 21st April with a variety of performances, which were very enjoyable and successful. We are looking forward to celebrating again next April.

We welcome The Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Steve Green to grace the occasion on 16 th October 2018.

Our sincere thanks go to all the members of the committee, the sponsors, the members of Milton Hall Group and the members of Elsecar Heritage Centre for their help and support.

As our maiden responsibility for this year’s brochure it is our great honour and pleasure to welcome you all to the Barnsley Durga Pujo.

Kashphool retains its name and ethos, but this year with even more gems from members and friends worldwide. We are sure you will enjoy leafing through this edition.

Such a venture is impossible without the support of our well-wishers and contributors, and to them we extend our sincere gratitude.

This year we have been inundated with articles from you all. This speaks highly of us as a recognised institution, but sadly due to various constraints we have not been able accommodate everyone. Our endeavour will remain to include these missed ones in the coming years.

As always, we have worked hard to put all the material together for you to enjoy but apologise in advance for any inadvertent errors of omissions or commissions.

My Summer Holiday 2018 Hello everyone, my name is Ruhika Deb and I am nine years old. I am writing to tell you about my summer holiday. But because it was longer than usual, I need to break it down into 3 parts.

Part 1: My Birthday It all started with my amazing birthday party which was on the day before my real birthday.

Can you guess what birthday party I had? No answers? Okay, it was a LASER ZONE party! Laser Zone is a game in which you have to shoot people with a laser gun who aren’t on your team and you also have to destroy ‘bases’. It was so much fun; I wish you had been there too!

It was just me and my school friends and two of my friends from school who had left UK and now live in India. They had come to visit us up here in England. What I did on my real birthday was just too amazing. We had gone to ‘Warner Brothers Studio-The Making of Harry Potter’ in Watford, London.

It was amazing to see how costumes were made and designed. I will never forget the ‘Prefects tap’. Every single row had different coloured water coming out! They gave the children this little book, which held clues to find all 12 of the golden ‘snitches’.

My birthday presents were super too. I got a Chocolate bar maker, Aqua Beads, a pack of pens and a notebook + rubbers. Best of all, though, were the gifts from my mum and dad, because they got me a replica of the ‘Time-turner necklace’ which Emma Watson herself used and a chocolate frog watch.

For those of you who don’t know what is a ‘chocolate frog’: it is a type of sweet invented by J.K. Rowling, which she wrote about in her books. I also had the ‘butter beer’ flavoured ice cream, which they make as big as your head!

Part 2: Isle of Wight After having a good night’s sleep, we caught the busy ferry to the Isle of Wight. There we stayed at a hotel called the Royal Hotel. It got it’s name from Queen Victoria herself, who visited the hotel when she visited Isle of Wight.

We had a wonderful stay because we went to lots of famous landmarks and beaches. I also had my share of fun- splashing in the pool and eating lots of ice cream. But all too soon the end drew near.

We had to board the ferry back to the dreary UK mainland.

Part 3: Spain Our hotel was close to Heathrow Airport. We checked in and had a pricey but delicious dinner.

I was really sad but excited while eating dinner, because I would be woken up in a couple of hours, as we needed to board our flight at 6am. It was a short but tiring 2 hours flight. Spain is 1 hour ahead in time than England. We had finally arrived in Madrid, Espanola! Although our little suitcase with the beautiful floral print (my favourite one!) had not made its journey over the shores. Ours wasn’t the only suitcase that didn’t arrive, though. Our Tour Manager’s went missing too! We waited and waited but still the luggage didn’t come! We finally reported to the luggage department and we were promised that our luggage will be delivered to our hotel by the end of that day. But it didn’t happen!! We were very stressed out. The next day we went to the airport ourselves and collected our luggage. ‘El Corte Ingles’ was the shop where we shopped for our essentials, when our luggage was still missing. ‘El Corte Ingles’ was a rather posh chain of shops. It was a difficult experience to shop there, because nobody spoke English. There were no price labels and you had to separately pay for products at every floor. Next day we visited the bull ring, which was built in Muslim style architecture and was decorated with ceramics and glass. We also visited the Royal Palace, Retiro gardens and famous squares and fountains of Madrid.

Following day we travelled by coach to Valencia. We visited the Oceanographic: Europe’s largest aquarium. Our favourite part was the glass tunnel which had loads of sharks, sting rays and shoals of fish floating around us. We did the city tour and visited the Valencia cathedral.

My Mum and Dad ate Paella (pronounced as paya) which had originated in Valencia. My Mum had a go on a ‘water bike’ (which she found tricky). Finally from there we travelled to Barcelona. It was my Mum’s birthday. It was a lovely surprise for her to find that the hotel guest team had left a small cake with a candle for her waiting in the hotel room!

The hotel was my favourite, because it was designed like a space orbital station! We visited the famous landmarks of Barcelona, eg: Park Guell, Sagrada Familia, Olympic stadium and Costa Brava beach. We watched a fast & furious flamenco show. On the last day of our trip we went to Montserrat, which is a beautiful mountainous area. It has the Santa Maria monastery, with the statue of black Madonna & child.

Throughout our trip we bought a few special mementos which includes: a display fan, a jewel topped pencil, a play fan for me, fridge magnets and a piece of jewellery for my mum.

One India, Equal in Love: Journey from denial to freedom Subhajit Basu “I am what I am, so take me as I am.”

--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Homosexuality is not a crime in India anymore, and it is not a mental disorder. On Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, the Supreme Court decriminalised the act of consensual sex between individuals identifying as “homosexuals”. This long-awaited judgment is a testament to the work of activists and lawyers in India who have shown that law can affirm human rights and equality.

The judgment went beyond empowering a historically marginalised community. The Honourable Judges of the Supreme Court of India quoted Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, philosophy, and of course, they referred to the Constitution. This is a progressive and decisive verdict from the Supreme Court. I hope it is the beginning of a more equal and inclusive society in India. After last year’s “privacy judgment,”1 in which the Supreme Court ruled that the right to privacy is a fundamental right and that sexual orientation is “an essential component of identity,” this is one of the most significant judgments in history.

However, the journey was not easy. India first dealt with homosexuality by not dealing with it. On July 2, 2009, the High Court of Delhi ended more than a century of discriminatory treatment against people because of their sexual orientation by declaring the application of significant elements of Section 377 of the India Penal Code (IPC) unconstitutional in the case of Naz Foundation v. Government of NCT of Delhi and Others. The court concluded that consensual sexual acts of adults in private should not be criminalised. The constitutional protection of dignity requires us to acknowledge the value and worth of all individuals as members of our society. Section 377 is a relic of the British legal system based on Victorian morality. The Naz Foundation submitted that Section 377 violated the fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 15, 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India.

Four years later, sitting in appeal, the Supreme Court of India reversed the High Court’s decision, and then dismissed an application for review (Suresh Kumar Koushal v. Naz Foundation). On Dec. 11, 2013, a two-judge Supreme Court Bench of Justices G. S. Singhvi and S. J. Mukhopadhaya held that IPC 377 ‘does not suffer from the vice of unconstitutionality and

In 2017, in a major verdict, the Supreme Court ruled that the right to privacy is a fundamental right and sexual orientation, the court said, is ‘an essential component of identity’ and that the rights of queer people are ‘founded on Constitutional doctrine.’

the declaration made by the Division Bench of the High court is legally unsustainable’ and passed the issue to Parliament. Ordinarily, it might be a generation or so before the Court would be persuaded to reconsider its judgment. However, unique among constitutional and apex courts, the Indian Supreme Court has created something called the “curative jurisdiction”, which allows proceedings to continue even after the dismissal of a review and for the Court to overturn its own decisions in certain rare and limited circumstances.

Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code is colonial-era legislation that has been used to ‘persecute, blackmail, arrest and terrorise sexual minorities’ in India since the inception of the Code, more than 150 years ago. Section 377 has its origins in a 16th-century law passed by Henry VIII and the British Parliament, which made the crime of buggery committed with mankind or beast a felony. In 1828 the British Parliament criminalised sodomy to make it a capital offence, applicable to British India. The first draft of an Indian anti-sodomy law came in 1837, as part of the Draft Penal Code prepared by the first Indian Law Commission formed in 1834. Clause 361 and 362 of the Code dealt with Unnatural Offences, 37 defined the offences as touching any person or animal to gratify unnatural lust. With Thomas Babington Macaulay heading the Commission, the final language of the Section replaced this idea of unnatural touch with the equally vague ‘carnal intercourse against the order of nature.’2 It is this definition that has survived in the Penal Code to date. However, what is the “order of nature”? The state cannot decide the boundaries between what is permissible or not.

Sexual orientation is one of many biological phenomena that are natural and inherent in an individual and controlled by neurological and biological factors. The science of sexuality has theorised that an individual has little or no control regarding to whom he or she is attracted.

Any discrimination by one’s sexual orientation would entail a violation of the fundamental right of freedom of expression.

Section 377 violates the rights and principles enshrined in the Constitution of India. It is irrational and arbitrary and fails to recognise the concept of identity, the core of which is selfdetermination. The very existence of such a law was proof of discrimination based on sexual orientation. Also significant was the court’s discussion on constitutional morality. In responding to arguments about whether popular morality was justification for restriction of fundamental rights, the Court answered in the negative.

Hence, this judgment is about Constitutional morality and privacy, but, most importantly, equality. The judges acknowledged the struggle of individuals and stated that the freedom to

choose was at the core of liberty and confirmed the rights of the LGBT community under the constitution. The Chief Justice said that individuals strengthen society and the constitution must evolve to include everyone. ‘The view of majoritarianism is constitutionally untenable.

Our Constitution is a dynamic document. The primary objective of the constitution—inclusive society and dynamic society’. We must strive to protect the dignity of every individual.

Without the right to dignity, every other right would be rendered meaningless. A landmark decision by the Indian Supreme Court cannot end age-old prejudices and discrimination by itself. It is time for the Indian Parliament to conduct a wide-ranging review of the existing legal framework, repeal discriminatory laws, and address other gaps in the law that prevent LGBT individuals from fully exercising their rights. It is also a question of changing “mindset”.

Swami Vivekananda, India and the World Professor Srikanta Chatterjee Introduction This year, 2018, marks the sesquicentennial of a conference, known as the Parliament of Religions, which was held in Chicago in September 1893. A young unknown Hindu monk from India attended the conference and, in a brief and impromptu speech, asserted the eternal values of religious tolerance and universalism of the Hindu religion and the Hindu way of life.

The monk was Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), a leading figure of the Indian renaissance of the 19th century. His message had a profound effect at the conference itself and he emerged as a towering figure and a much sought-after speaker in America.

Swamiji is rightly regarded as one of the builders of modern India. Although Vivekananda’s reputation is principally that of a philosopher and spiritual leader, his influence pervades many other aspects of India’s national life, as this essay addresses briefly below.

India’s Long History: a Perspective The advent of British rule, which started in Bengal in 1757, brought a degree of social and political stability to India after a long time. Over the next century, the British turned India into a single administrative unit. A consequence of immense significance which British rule had brought to India had been its imperceptible influence on the minds and hearts of India’s intelligentsia. The ideas of European Enlightenment were like a breath of fresh air to the stale and fossilised social and cultural environment of the country. As British rule in India started in Bengal, with Calcutta as the capital, it was the Bengali elite who first experienced this transition. What has come to be known as the Indian Renaissance started in Bengal in the second half of the 18th century and gathered momentum through the 19th century. Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772-1833) is regarded as the pioneering figure of this new age. The untiring zeal with which the Raja pursued his mission to modernise Bengal inspired a large number of young people to follow up on the works he had initiated in different fields of human endeavour. The 19th century saw the emergence of a whole galaxy of brilliant leaders whose works and messages gradually spread to the rest of India, and the old social order started to change noticeably.

India’s Cultural Resurgence The changes alluded to above involved both an acceptance of the European ideas and also asserting belief in many of India’s own age-old philosophical, religious and cultural traditions.

The evident scientific and technological superiority of the 19th century Europe had caused Indians to feel a sense of inferiority. The work of the Christian missionaries in particular made the Hindu practice of idolatry and its many attendant rituals look distinctly out of place in a

‘modern’ society. Although conversion from Hinduism to Christianity was never large-scale, the Hindus’ pride in their heritage did suffer a set-back. While the advances in the fields of language, literature, science, education and social reform achieved under the leadership of the renaissance stalwarts from Ram Mohun Roy to Rabindarnath Tagore were impressive, the Hindu religious and spiritual practices continued to face criticism as being outmoded and superstitious. To re-assert her rich spiritual and philosophical heritage India needed a champion who was proud of that heritage, without being conceited; one who had the intellectual conviction and ability to explain it to those who debunked it both within India and outside. In the person of Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) India found that champion.

Vivekananda’s Early Life Swami Vivekananda’s real name was Narendranath Datta or Naren for short. He was born into a well-to-do professional family of north Calcutta on 12th January 1963. His father, Biswanath Datta, was a successful lawyer and a liberal, progressive man in his social and religious outlook. His mother, Bhuvaneswari Devi, was a pious woman of strong personality.

Narendranath had wide intellectual interests and an alert mind. He studied widely in history, philosophy, religion, literature and other subjects. He trained in Indian classical music and was a good singer. From his childhood, Naren had a prodigious memory, and could learn and remember a subject easily and quickly. He had a good physique and was a capable athlete.

He was always critical of social and religious practices such as caste distinction and untouchability. He wanted to be guided only by reason and proof. Naren attended the Metropolitan Institution, a school founded by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

After completing school, Naren joined the Scottish Church College (then called the General Assembly’s Institution) and graduated with a BA degree in 1884. His favourite subject was history, but he was very widely read in Western philosophy and logic and the history of the European nations. He took a particular liking for John Stuart Mill and Herbert Spencer and regarded himself as an agnostic He even took a course in western medicine to understand the working of the nervous system and its relation with the spinal cord. This helped him later in life to explain the physical and psychic aspects of Yoga in a scientific manner. He was however on a spiritual quest to understand life and its purpose.

Naren’s Spiritual Quest and his Meeting with Shri Ramakrishna His dislike for the ritual-based orthodoxy of the traditional Hinduism led him to join the Brahmo movement, which was a splinter group from mainstream Hinduism, led by such eminent Calcutta personalities as Kesub Chandra Sen and Devendra Nath Tagore. The Brahmo Samaj, as this movement came to be called, was opposed to idolatry. It espoused monotheism in line with the teachings of the Upanishads, the ancient Hindu philosophical texts. Naren was curious about the idea of god, and wanted to know if anyone had personally experienced god.

He asked some of the senior Brahmo Samajists if they had “seen god”, but their answers did not satisfy him. He continued seeking the truth in an unhappy state of mind.

Meanwhile, a simple man of faith - a priest at a temple in Dakhsineswar, near Calcutta, named Shri Ramakrishna (1836-1886), had been attracting attention because of his unorthodox manner of practising religion and his rejection of ritualistic practices. An English professor of Naren’s college, William Hastie, mentioned Ramakrishna’s name while discussing Wordsworth’s nature-mysticism. Hastie observed that such mystical experiences can be gained through deep meditation, adding that he considered Ramakrishna, whom he had met, to be one who had achieved such a state through concentration and pure living.

Naren’s first meeting with Ramakrishna was at the home of Surendra Nath Mitra, a wealthy and influential Calcutta figure, who invited Naren to sing for his guests at his home. The guests included Ramakrishna. This was in November 1881 when Naren was just 18 years old.

Ramakrishna exchanged a few words with Naren and eagerly invited him to visit Dakshineswar. Naren’s first impression of Ramakrishna was one of scepticism and confusion; but he could not ignore the simple priest of Dakshineswar.

A few months later, Naren’s cousin Ram Chandra Datta took him and a couple of other friends to Dakhineswar. Ramakrishna was ecstatic to see Naren, took him aside and told him that he had been missing Naren badly ever since their first meeting. Naren was, again, not sure how to take this strange man; his immediate reaction to such behaviour was one of bewilderment!

But, later, this is how he recollected his experience: He [Ramakrishna] used the most simple language, and I thought ‘Can this man be a great teacher’? - crept near to him and asked him the question which I had been asking others all my life: ‘Do you believe in God, Sir?’ ‘Yes’, he replied. ‘Can you prove it, Sir?’ ‘Yes’. ‘How?’ ‘Because I see him just as I see you here, only in a much intenser sense’. For the first time, I found a man who dared to say that he saw God, that religion was a reality to be felt, to be sensed. …… When I saw this man, all scepticism was brushed aside.

While Naren was fascinated to watch Ramakrishna’s ability to enter into different states of consciousness and to induce others, including Naren himself, into them, his rational mind could not accept Ramakrishna’s worship of the idol of goddess (Mother) Kali. However, he continued visiting Ramakrishna, and learning from him.

In 1884 both Kesab Chandra Sen and Naren’s father Biswanath Datta died within a month of each other. Naren experienced the most serious spiritual crisis, and decided to renounce the material life and follow the path of religious life, with Ramakrishna as his Master. By then he had observed the idol-worshipping priest proclaiming with complete conviction, ‘যত মত, তত পথ’ (as many pathways to god as there are faiths), the affirmation of non-sectarian belief which satisfied Naren’s rational mind.

Ramakrishna himself died of throat cancer in 1886. Vivekananda had received many spiritual and psychic gifts in the form of extraordinary experiences from his Master. He was ready to explore his own ideas in the contemporary context of his motherland in a state of material destitution and spiritual confusion.

Narendra Reconciles Reason with Religion So, what was to be the aim of Naren’s religious pursuit? Was its purpose to be his personal salvation? Naren had never been a believer in rituals or blind observance of some practices.

He would insist on being guided always by rational judgement. How could he reconcile reason with religion? Again, he found the answer in the words of his Master that ‘religion did not work on empty stomach’. The main point of Ramakrishna’s teaching was that ‘the service to man was service to god’. This accorded fully with Vivekananda’s rational and practical mind, and he was ready to preach it to the world, and to put it into practice.

The misery and wretchedness of his countrymen made Naren determined to practise religion that helped deal with these practical problems. “I do not believe in a God or religion which cannot wipe the widow’s tears or bring a piece of bread to the orphan’s mouth”, he observed.

He found the answer to his quest for such a religion in the philosophy of Vedanta, which is one of the six Indian philosophical systems. Vedanta, based on the monotheistic idea of Brahma, the supreme godhead, teaches that religion is the manifestation of the Divinity already in man. It proclaims that atman, the Absolute Soul, is the only ultimate reality in the metaphysical sense. Since all objects are manifestations of god, serving fellow men, especially the poor, was the Vedantic way to practise religion for Naren. He called it ‘Practical Vedanta’.

After Ramakrishna’s death, the small group of his direct disciples had gathered to form a kind of a movement that was later to spread across India and the world to spread the Master’s teachings, and, more importantly to serve humanity in need. Several of the young disciples took the monastic vows and assumed monastic names (ending with ‘ananda’ or bliss). All this was achieved under Naren’s informal leadership, but he himself had not adopted a monastic name at this stage. The monks then set off on extended pilgrimages visiting the Hindu holy places all over India and living the monastic life. Naren too was travelling, usually alone, but sometimes with some of the other monks, using various assumed monastic names to hide his worldly identity. It was in 1892 that he came to assume his monastic name Vivekananda (one who has the bliss of spiritual discrimination), and Swami as the title. This name was apparently suggested by the Raja of Khetri, one of his major benefactors in Rajastan. His travels from the southern tip of India to the high Himalayas helped Vivekananda to perceive at first hand the enormity of India’s social, economic and religious problems. It also helped him to chart the future path or the mission of the movement he was to lead.

Swami Vivekananda in the West In September 1893, a Parliament of Religions was being held in Chicago. Although most of its participants were Christians of different denominations, there were several Asian delegates representing some of the Eastern religions. Vivekananda (Swamiji) arrived in Chicago uninvited and penniless, but through a series of happy coincidences, he was able not only to attend the Parliament but also to speak. He started his speech with the words “Sisters and Brothers of America”. This seemed to capture the spirit of the religious gathering, and it received a long and enthusiastic applaud. The Swami spoke a number of times on themes such as “The Essence of the Hindu Religion” and “Religion Not the Crying Need of India”. He summarised Hinduism’s basic teachings in a manner that was at once elegant and intelligible.

He also mounted a spirited attack on the Western tendencies to distort Indian religious and social practices. He proudly asserted the “tradition of tolerance and universal acceptance” of the Hindu religion; recalled its history of granting asylum to the persecuted minorities such as the followers of the Zoroastrian faith and also the Israelites who had “come to Southern India in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny”.

His dignified and inspired presence in the ochre garb of a sannyasin, his oratory in perfect English and his message asserting the essential similarity of all religions made him an instant celebrity. He chastised the Christian missionary’s relentless mocking of Hindu idolatry by reminding them that “every man in Christian countries has a huge cathedral on his head, and on top of that a book”. “The range of idols, he pointed out, is from wood and stone to Jesus and Buddha”. He proclaimed with conviction that there was divinity in all men, that the Vedantist saw “no difference between ant and angel; that every worm was the brother of the Nazarene”. And yet, this Swami was equally assertive in saying that “India’s true need was not an alien religion, but food, medicine and financial assistance to cope with her massive problems”.

Following the Parliament, he was so much in demand that Swamiji spent over two years lecturing at various places across the United States, interrupting his travels in America for a trip to England in 1895. His lectures on Vedanta and on religion generally were equally wellreceived in England. He gathered some disciples too, among them was Margaret Noble, the future Sister Nivedita who devoted herself to the task of helping the poor in India as part of the Ramakrishna movement. The Swami visited England a second time when returning to India in 1896. On this trip, he visited several other countries in Europe.

In 1896, Swamiji addressed a group of graduating Philosophy students of Harvard University.

The University authorities were so impressed by his lecture and his answers to the questions which his listeners raised that they offered him Professorship of Eastern Philosophy. He declined the offer because paid work was not for him, a sannyasin. A similar offer from the Columbia University was also declined for the same reason. During his stay in the USA, he was able to found the Vedantic Society of New York as non-sectarian organisation for preaching and practising the principles of Vedanta and applying them to other religions. A similar

organisation was also founded in England. These have since developed into larger bodies, with branches in other parts of the America and Britain.

Vivekananda’s messages for India Vivekananda himself learnt a lot from his travels in the West, and returned to India to tell his compatriots to “sit at their feet and learn their arts and industries”. He castigated them for their bigotry and their backward thinking. “Go back to your Upanishads, the shining, the strengthening, the bright philosophy; and part from these mysterious things, all these weakening things”. He mocked the narrow-minded attitude of his fellow Hindus “our religion is in the kitchen, our God is the cooking-pot, and our religion is “don’t touch me, I am holy”.

His messages to India were those of self-reliance, individual search and effort, and compassion for the poor and the down-trodden. Above all, he preached fearlessness. “If there is a sin in the world, it is weakness; avoid all weakness, it is sin it is death”, he told his countrymen.

This year, 2018, marks the sesquicentennial of Swami Vivekananda’s celebrated address at the Chicago gathering of the leaders and representatives of different religions. As an unknown young man from a religion which had long suffered indignity, Swamiji left a lasting impression with his brief and impromptu address outlining the message of religious tolerance and universalism.

Bengali vs. British: the Best of Both Worlds

Identity is distinctly individual and those of us growing up in a dual heritage household form our own by bringing the east to the west. However, there are different levels of integration amongst the population. Some of us embrace both Bangali and British culture while others limit themselves to one or the other. The conventional upbringing may involve growing up in areas containing larger populations of Indians, seeking similar friends and engaging in only traditional activities. Although it is not forbidden to engage in other activities, some who have grown up in this way often find that culture mixed ideas are a peculiar concept that take time to adjust to. On the other end of the spectrum, there are the ‘coconuts’ who are brown by race but white by behaviour, stripping themselves of our heritage. I am proud to be brought up in the category where my parents have helped me establish a delicate balance between both my cultures.

Growing up in a dual heritage household was very eye opening for me, as my parents are both Indian born and bred, while I am born and brought up here, so naturally their way of speaking English is different to mine. My parents always encouraged me to develop both Bangla and English since childhood. Ma conversed with me in English and Baba in Bangla, so interchanging between the two languages became second nature. My innate Bengali nature gave rise to my first word being ‘Baba’ and from this, I progressed. As I grew older, my parents and I established a symbiotic relationship of language teaching. Once my English was established through watching TV, reading, practicing at school and speaking with my parents, they taught me higher-level Bangla phrases and vocabulary. In return, I began to teach them the correct diction of English, which I had picked up from the world around me, so that they would be able to speak correctly to their colleagues. Another contributing factor to learning both languages simultaneously were our annual trips to India and here, I made a point of only speaking Bangla. A rather droll aspect of being a bilingual child is the confusion of my school friends. To their utter bewilderment, whilst in their presence, I always chattered in a fluent stream of Bangla to my parents. It was rather entertaining to watch their faces scrunch up and display their thought of ‘is she saying something bad about me?’

Despite going to a school where all my friends, teachers and the majority of students were white, I had a positive schooling experience and did not face racism issues. Everyone I knew embraced my culture as much as I do- to the point where many of my friends also adopted the use of my daak naam, Treya. They loved me in saris as much as in jeans and numerous times, my friends pressed me to invite them to my future wedding, so that they too can don our attire. My teachers greatly appreciated Bollywood movies and as much as we discussed Hollywood, the last 10 mins of music class was always devoted to conversations about Bollywood. Halfway through high school, my friends developed a taste for our songs. There were occasions where teachers walked in on us crashing to the floor, having jumped from the tables on which we had been dancing to Sheila ki Jawani- apparently ‘the best song’ my friends had heard at the time. It occurred again when we began driving too; on group trips in a car, Kala Chasma was often on repeat by popular vote, while we made the outward journey and on the return we’d be rapping to Drake or Kanye. Thus a delicate balance between the two

cultures was kept. On the other hand, many of my Kolkata friends act more western and shred themselves of many of their Bangali values, thus being the ‘coconuts’ in my life. Their longing to live a western life, similar to us is a cause for astonishment upon seeing me come from the UK, complete with Bangali values, mannerisms and attire. My Indian friends here are a pleasant mix of coconuts and ‘browns’. While some of my Kolkata friends seem to think I am ‘more Bangali’ than they are, my British friends enjoy their ‘temporary conversion’ to my culture whilst with me.

Although all my friends welcome me anywhere and anytime, there is a marginal difference in ‘feeling at home’ in a fellow Bangali’s house as opposed to a British person’s house. My parents have taught me courtesies that still subconsciously exercise control over my P’s and Q’s with my friends’ families. Additionally, I have the typical bangali values instilled in me; such as seeking elders blessings upon arrival somewhere. With British gatherings, it’s eating controlled amounts while engaging in small talk whereas bangali gatherings involve aunties ushering everyone to have ‘ar ektu’ even after 5 huge courses, with rounds of roaring adda in between, followed by chai after dessert. British gathering endings are short and pleasant, whereas the typical bangali departure, taking over 1 hour involves ‘cholo, we’re leaving, pore dekha hobe’ only to be shouted over the racket multiple times but a little closer towards the exit with each repetition.

Throughout my life here, for four out of seven days in the week, my parents and I ate Bangali food, ranging from shorshe chingri, deem-er dalna and bangali chicken and aloo’r jhol to a range of vegetable preparations accompanied by rice or roti. This didn’t prevent me from having pancakes on Pancake Day. From Friday to Sunday, my mom cooked dishes from a variety of cuisines beyond English; i.e. Mexican, Chinese and Spanish but to name a few. In this way I was aware of all food and acquired rich taste buds. For this, I regularly reminded my friends and teachers that school pouring a jar of Patak’s sauce on chicken did not make the true Tikka masala that they raved over. Equally, they taught me the correct differences between Cottage, Shepherd’s and Admiral pies. Although Hindus don’t tend to eat beef, my parents were liberal with what I had but I still chose to go without beef. If beef was on the menu at school, my friends would come out with me and likewise, when food they wouldn’t eat was on the menu, I would accompany them into town for lunch. They marvelled at the fact that I could eat chicken curry with cutlery in school yet eat the same thing at home but with my hand. Moreover, the spice filled Bengali cuisine lets me handle a ‘hot’ Nandos without batting an eyelid, while my friends fight back tears brought on by Lemon and Herb, much to my amusement.

I am very fortunate to have been able to celebrate the festivals of both India and England through my upbringing. It meant that from birth, the dark autumn months were brightened

by Durga Puja annually and I grew to call Puja bari my second home. It also meant that I saw a decorated house and tree, for most of December and I would find presents underneath the

tree on Christmas day. I am fortunate that my parents met my now godparents on holiday.

They are English but they respect our heritage as much as we do theirs. My godfather had a small Christmas tree that had been passed down his family for generations. I was honoured 5 years ago when he extended his heritage to me by presenting that tree to me at Christmas, despite having many grandchildren of his own. I also am happy to have the ability to sing all carols at Christmas time yet chant our mantras while giving Anjali. In childhood my friends taught me certain Christmas traditions but when we were older, they listened in awe to tales of Puja and our vast number of gods and goddesses. In early spring, while I observe lent for 40 days, the festival of Holi occurs. It is intriguing how the concept of Holi has inspired the now worldwide events of colour run, which involves participants running 5km for charity whilst being splashed with colours every 1km. It demonstrates the profound effect of our culture on society. Contrastingly, Lent has enabled me to give up many of my favourite but unhealthy things such as ketchup, sausages and cakes, while teaching me the importance of perseverance. So from both cultures, there is a lesson to be learned. Late spring always brought the arrival of my dance school shows and Nababarsha. Every year, I immersed myself in simultaneously learning multiple ballet and modern routines while self- choreographing Indian dances to be performed. Bengali and British festivals share the same beauty in that they’re connected with a religious tale but the festivals are bound by laughter, colour and activity.

Being a British Indian enabled me to overcome cultural conflicts and unite them - keeping traditions alive and gently challenging those that are archaic. It is sustaining my heritage in a foreign land. It’s taking gifts from here to India but bringing back tubes of boroline for myself.

It’s being overly courteous to guests while shouting down the phone to relatives. It’s learning colonial history at home but the Tudors at school and telling Christian fables but recounting tales of Mahabharata. It’s the freedom wearing a long gown or a sari or whether I communicate in Bangla or English. It’s the option of both alcohol and lassi. It’s opulence in history, language, literature and ways of life. It’s vigour and flexibility, open-mindedness and tolerance. It’s being a global citizen from one place while retaining the culture of my roots. I am neither fully British, nor fully Indian but I can proudly say that I am a winning combination of the two because being British Indian is truly a blend of the best of both worlds.

From the puja kitchen: This year’s special - Achari chicken

Indrila Ghosal

Ingredients: Chicken with bones 750 grams (approx.. cut into 8 pieces) Bhavnagri chillies 250 gms Onion 3 medium Ginger garlic paste 1 tbsp Yogurt 1/2 cup Mustard seeds 1 tsp Fenugreek seeds 1/4 tsp Fennel seeds 1 tsp Black onion seeds 1/2 tsp Dry chilli 2-3 Coriander seeds 1/2 tsp Coriander powder 1 tbsp Turmeric 1/2 tsp Salt to taste Sugar 1/4 tsp Red chilli powder to taste Mustard oil Method Step 1 Coarsely grind Mustard seeds, Fenugreek seeds, fennel seeds, Black onion seeds, Dry chilly and Coriander seeds together and the Achari masala is ready. Keep aside.

Step 2 Slit the chillies and remove all the seeds (you can leave some seeds on to get the kick).

Step 3 Marinade the chicken and the chillies together with yogurt, 1/2 of the Achari masala, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, salt to taste and 1tbsp mustard oil and refrigerate it for at least 2 hours.

Step 4 Dice the onions. In a non-stick pan add oil and fry the onion till it becomes transparent. Add a pinch of fenugreek seeds in between. Now add the marinated chicken and chillies, stir for few minuets and add the remaining achari masala powder, coriander powder, add salt to taste, chilli powder, and ginger garlic paste. Stir well in low flame. Now cover and pan with a lid and cook in low flame until the chicken becomes tender.

(Try to avoid using water but if it becomes too dry at the bottom then splash a little water) When the chicken is almost cooked add sugar and cook for another 2 minutes, mix well and drizzle some oil on top. Garnish with coriander leaves.

Flower of Bengal- ‘Kashful’, an eternal beauty of Durga Puja In India most talked and distinguished feature is its culture of celebration. Indians believe in mythology and its utmost power over mankind. Our mythology depicts good force in a shape of deity that curb all the evil force in the end. There are different culture arrangements even among the Indians. For example, people of west bengal have a different culture from Punjab, whereas there some basic unity of culture in Assam with West Bengal.To elaborate, you can recognize a Bengali person anywhere in this world in their dialects, creativity, beauty and above all their love for Durga Puja. Durga Puja is celebrated mainly in West Bengal, Assam and Tripura in India in the autumn season around the time end September to starting of October regarding the tithi of that particular year. All over India it is called as ‘Navratri’. But in these three states they call it Durga Puja. But in a word we can say where there is Bengali, DurgaPuja and its culture prevails.

Talking about Durga Puja, we must delineate the significance of ‘KashFul’ surrounding this auspicious festival. Kaash flower brings the news of coming of MaaDurga. It makes autumn more and more beautiful than ever.Bengalis depict ‘kashful’ in so many poetries, novel and even short stories. Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore sketched in his poetries, songs how flower ‘kaash’ brings in essence of durga puja in bengali life after a tiresome year. He expressed, “AjiSarataPrabhate/ KashFulerMadhuraGondhe...” He said how those who lives in abroad long for coming home. Satyajit Ray’s path breaking book as well film ‘PatherPanchali’ plotted around newly grown kaash that indicated the life of a two siblings Apu and Durga. For the movie India bagged Oscar for the first time. In this film Ray showed how new white cast of kaash change the atmosphere, its air. They are evidence of upcoming Durga.

Not only literature, flower kaash bears a strong mythological indication. Flower of Bengal is mark of upcoming Durga Puja. It is noteworthy that invoking of Maa Durga is incomplete without the arrival of the flower. In India this flower only grows in autumn and according to mythology for the first time in autumn season Lord Rama invoked Devi Durga to help him to destroy the evil Ravan and bring back Sita. This sudden and unexpected invocation of Devi Durga is termed as ‘Akal Bodhon’. Eventually this ‘Akal Bodhon’ became the ritual and every year people celebrate Puja.

As the autumns ends on a sad note with the departing of Devi Durga from the mundane world, the white cast of flower of Bengal disappear slowly. We wait for a new year, new beginning.

We long for kaash and think when will they come with all their beauteous form and swipe away all our stress, depression of the complete year and rejuvenate our soul with her white aura that actually symbolizes peace and love in our heart.

This longing of soul is never ending, love for land and its culture.

A stranger looking in on Puja festivities I have never been to this place before It was a big hall with a large double door Once inside it looked so dark and bare Everyone took on tasks with special care Chairs were placed in rows of about ten Then the dressing of the stage area began Red and gold curtains were hung all around Five sacred gods were placed on the ground For this procedure, shoes were removed Respect for the gods was fully approved When all was done amidst the flooded light The whole creation was a wonderful sight As the morning progressed, ladies placed flowers They also cut fruits, which went on for hours Some of the people were preparing the meal The cook in his kitchen with veggies to peel Most of the work done, when all was at ease Good Dr Rana brought out biscuits and teas Meanwhile in the kitchen dinner was cooking Families arrived with the tickets and booking The priest lit some candles, prayers and chanting Drums were being beaten to moaning and ranting The pans in the kitchen were getting quite hot I thought to myself, who will eat all this lot Back to the hall, more families filed into the room The room came alive to splendor far from gloom With the meals all set out in big pans on tables Plates at the ready, servers ready with their ladles A large queue had formed with all the hungry folk Coloured food, green, white, brown and like egg yolk All chopped and peeled mixed with herb and spice The coloured food on plates looked so very nice A table was prepared with jugs, cups and cold water They drank it down; mother, father, son and daughter Faster and faster the cups of cold water went down I thought at this rate they will surely dry out the town Then the food is taken away, the music and the drums play With the families seated or standing all around More prayers, more candles lit on the floor and ground When all is finished and the goodbyes are said They will soon go home to their house and bed In the back rooms work goes on till very late Cleaning, washing every pan, dish, tray and plate With the kindest, smiling people, I have ever met Say “come back tomorrow, it is not over for you yet�

Paradise Praslin Island, Seychelles by Arghojit Giri (Ron) I was so excited before travelling. I expected Seychelles to be gorgeous, beautiful and lovely.

The start was however disappointing as our flight got delayed due to technical problems.

Nevertheless, it was a good flight and I slept all throughout. I was finally relieved when we got the connecting flight to Praslin irrespective of the delay.

It was a short flight amongst a mesmerising beauty of nature. We stayed in a small chalet on the Grand Anse beach. I was so happy.

We took a long stroll on the beach through white powdery sand and gentle sea waves. We saw birds, fishes and coconut trees. We took photographs near the sea. It was fun.

Next day, we rented a car and drove through the mountainous part of the island. It was pretty but scary. Then, we reached the Ferry area which appeared to be a dreamland with green mountains kissing turquoise sea water, scenic green islands and unbelievable tranquillity. Next, we went to a river bridge which was spectacular with green river water amid extraordinary scenic surroundings.

We spent the rest of the day at Baia St Anne and Cote d’Or beaches; both with “out of the world” beauty. Next day, we drove through Anse Boudin and Anse Possession on our way to Anse Lazio. It was a cute little sandy beach with lots of sun seekers and swimmers. We spent the afternoon at the golden coast (Cote d’Or) where I swam in crystal clear water alongside other teenagers. The day ended with breath-taking sunset at Grand Anse beach.

The next day started with colourful and musical birds sharing breakfast with us in the beachside veranda of the chalet. We then went to the jetty to catch the ferry on our way to La Digue island.

The ocean was rough, but the surroundings was picturesque.

Praslin was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life. I shall cherish my memorable moments in the island for many years to come.

র্লড়ত পারলাম না,

া​াঁটা ঘদড়ে উঠড়লা--মড়ন হড়লা কেন ওই নীল ক াড়খর দৃঘষ্ট আমার ঘপড়ঠ কলড়গ রড়েড়ে কেন ;

তাোতাঘে পা ালালাম,স্কু ড়লর সমে হড়ে এড়লা ;আজ কুোর জড়লই স্নান রড়ত হড়র্ !

ঠাঘির র্ া-ঝ া পাত্তা না ঘদড়ে নাড় -মুড়খ গুাঁড়জ স্কু ড়লর পড়ে হা​াঁটা ঘদলাম, টইটম্বুর খাড়লর উপর র্া​াঁড়শর সা​াঁড় া--এ জন অঘত সেপবড়ন তার সাইড় ল পার রড়ে, জড়ল এ ঝা​াঁ হা​াঁড়সর হুড়টাপুটি, ু ঘরপানা ইত�তিঃ কভড়স কর্োড়ে! আমার পে আর কশর্ হে না--আজ আর আমার স্কু ড়ল সমড়ে কপৌাঁোড়না হড়র্ না, োোর্ড়রর অঘনঘিত পে কতা নে,এড়তা সমড়ের ঘনঘিড়ত র্া​াঁধা জীর্ন ক্র, আজ পাড়ল কলখা ক্লাড়সর র্াইড়র নীলডাউন ! তাই অঘনঘেততাড় ই কর্ড়ে ঘনলাম--খাড়লর পার ধড়র কহাঁ ড়ট ড়লঘে,কভজা আাঁঠাড়লা মাটি টি ামড়ে ধরড়ে, কেন র্লড়ত াইড়ে "কেওনা ও পড়ে--ও পে ঘদ হীন,ঘদশাহীন "---ঘ ন্তু মড়নর মাড়ঝ কভড়স উঠড়ে নীল ক াড়খর দৃঘষ্ট,কেন আমন্ত্রে জানাড়ে নতু ন পড়ের,এই সাজাড়না-কগাোড়না র্�া-প া এ ড়িড়েঘমড় কভড়ঙ-গুাঁঘেড়ে অনে জীর্ড়নর আহ্বান, আঘম েু টড়ত শুরু রলাম, মুড়খ কভজা র্াতাড়সর স্পশব-- াদা মাখা টি আমার পা জঘেড়ে ধরড়ে,েুাঁ ড়ে সঘরড়ে ঘদলাম,আমার মড়ধে ঘ এ োোর্ড়রর সুর ? ক াড়খ কভড়স উঠড়লা িাগো েুাঁ ড়ে ো া খাঘল পা ---প্র ৃ ঘতর এ াে সৃঘষ্ট, নীল ক াড়খর দুেঘতড়ত হাঘরড়ে োওোর কনশা ! েু ড়ট েু ড়ট হা​াঁঘপড়ে কগঘে ---দূড়র াড়লা কমি ঘদক্ ক্রর্াড়ল ঘস্তর---র্াতাড়স জড়লর আভাস; কভজা শরীড়র কলড়ে োড় ঠান্ডা র্াতাড়সর ঘশেঘশোঘন,ধীড়র ধীড়র এঘগড়ে ললাম এ অঘনঘিত পড়ে ---োোর্ড়রর মড়তা ---এ নতু ন সূড়েবর স�াড়ন !! আমার ‘দিবস’নামা প্রসেনজিৎমিুমদার1

বে�কাল আেসলই প্রতিবারই মসন হয় িখনকার মি িীব্র বে� আর কই। িাতননা আমার অনুভূতিগুসলাই হয়ি িার িীব্রিা হাতরসয়সে। যাই হহাক,এই প্রিসে হেবরুয়ারী পড়সিই তি​িীয় েপ্তাসহর প্রতিটি তদন তবসেষ নাসম অতভতহি এবং পালন করা হয়। একিু গভীরভাসব ভাবসল বুজি আমাসদরও তেল হে​েব তদন, হয়ি হকাসনা নাম তেলনা, হকাসনা কযাসলন্টাসরর েীমায় তনর্াতরি ধ তেলনা, তকন্তু িা তেল, অিয� িীব্র ভাসব তেল। আমার বযজিগি তকেু অতভজ্ঞিা এখনকার িথাকতথি তদনযাপসনর হপ্রতিসি হরাম�ন করার ইচ্চা ে�রণ করসি পারলাম না। অবসেসষ তলসখই হেললামসেরকম তকেু অতভজ্ঞিার মাইলসটান। আমার কাসে িীবসনর হেই েব হরামাঞ্চকর, স্মরণীয়, ূ গু শ্বােুদ্ধকর এবং বুসকর মসর্য অশ্বসমর্ হ াড়া হোিার তকেু িীব্র মুহি ধ তলই তেল বে�কাল। আর িারই চতবিচব ধ ণধ আিীবন। িখন ক্লাে নাইন। হঠাৎ স্কুল েুটি। েবাই বলাবতল করতেল ক্লাে িুসয়লসভর এক োত্র ও োত্রী যুগসল আত্মহিযা কসরসে। আত্মহিযা বযাপারিা িখনও আমার কাসে অি​িা পতরস্কার তেলনা। পসর হিসনতেলাম ওরা পর�রসক ভালবােসিা, তকন্তু বাতড়সি িা তনসয় খুব অোত� তেল। ‘এক দুসি হক তলসয়’েতবিা িখন েদয তরতলি হসয়তেল। হেচ্চামৃিুযর আসগ িারা েতবিা হদসখতেল। িারপর আসে আসে বুসিতেলাম, ভালবাো এমন একিা অনুভূতি যার িনয প্রাণও হদয়া যায়। ভালবাোসি হে প্রাণ আি হকাথায়? আমার কসলসি োটধ ইয়ার। আর িার স্কুল পসবরধ অত�ম। ‘আমরা দুিন একটি গা​াঁসয় থাতক/সেই আমাসদর একটি মাত্র েুখ’িাইসপর বযাপার েযাপার। খুব লুতকসয়ই একিু হদখা, তচটঠ তবতনময়। িখন না তেল হমাবাইল হোন, হিতলসোনও খুব কম হলাসকর বাতড়সিই থাকসিা। মসন পসড় ওসদর কাসির মতহলা ‘বিা-তদ’তেল আমাসদর পত্রবাতহকা। হেই কাক-ডাকা-সভাসর আমার তপ্রয়ব�ুসক তনসয় কিতদন হয দা​াঁতড়সয় থাকিাম হেই এক অকালবয়স্কা, েীণকায়া ধ মতহলার িনয। তনসির বাতড়সি কাসির মতহলা কসব আেি তক আেিনা, হে খবর কখনও রাতখতন।তকন্তু হপ্রতমকার বাতড়সি মাসে কিতদন কামাই করসিা িার পুসরা তহোব আমার কাসে থাকসিা। এসহন বিাতদসক হমাড় ুসর দূর হথসক আেসি হদখসলও আমার হািধ -তবি হবসড় হযসিা। পসর পসর েপ্তাসহ তিনতদন আমার ‘হে’ পাসের পাড়ার মানুদার (েম্ববিঃ মানসবন্দ্র েযার) কাসে প্রাইসভি টিউেন তনি। হভার েিায় তিতন পড়াসিন। বাতলকা োসড় পা​াঁচিায় বাতড় হথসক হবসরাসিা। অি হভাসর র হথসক হবসরাবার িনয আমার অতভন্ত-হৃদয় ব�ু তমলন একিা েতলড আইতডয়া তদসয়তেল। দুিসন ট্রাকেুযি আর হকডে তকসন হেললাম। হভাসর িতগং করব। ওই হভাসর হবপাড়ায় যাওয়ার একিা তবশ্বােসযাগযিা চাই হিা! আমার িনয হবচারা তমলনও আর্া ুসম উঠি। ব�ু তমলসনর কাসে আতম আিীবন ঋণী থাকব। যার িনয এই প্রেঙ্গ, এক হভাসর পড়সি যাবার েময় রাোর মাসি হেই বাতলকা িার খািার মলাসির হভির হথসক তচটঠ হবর কসর েসব তদসি যাসচ্চ, পাসের বাড়ীর িানালা হঠাৎ খুসল হগল, হযন ওি হপসি তেল।েযামলদার বউ, মাসন হবৌতদ, বাচ্চা হমসয়র মি তচৎকার কসর উঠসলা,“হদসখ হেসলতে-ই-ইই।”আমাসদর িখন তক তবব্রিকর অবস্থা। লজ্জায় পতড়মতর কসর পালাই। হেই দাদা-সবৌতদসক বহুতদন ূ ধ মসন পরসল একিা অদরভুি এতড়সয় চলিাম। আি কখসনা অলে হবলায় হেতদসনর হেই তবব্রিকর মুহি ভাললাগায় মন ভসর যায়। এই রকমই আসরা তকেু মুহসূ িধর স্মৃতিচারণা রইল আমার ‘তদবে’নামায়। *****

ররাজ রে হে​েহন আমার তপ্রয় এক আত্মীয়-কাম-ব�ুসক তে-অে করসি হগতেলাম। প্রথমবার আমাসদর এখাসন হবড়াসি এসেতেল, ক’তদন খুব আন� করলাম। তবলােপুসর আমার বাতড়সকই হবে কযা� বাতনসয় িব্বলপুর, হডাঙ্গরগড়, বা�বগড় অভয়ারসণয ে�াহখাসনসকর টট্রপ। হটেন হথসক হেরার পসথ তবলােপুসরর পসথর দুর্াসর োদা পল্লতবি-পুজি​ি েিসন গাে(এখাসন মুঙ্গা বসল) হদসখ বুিলাম ‘বে� এসে হগসে’।বািাসরর মসর্য তদসয় তেরতেলাম। স্ত্রী বলসলন, গাতড় থামাও। আতম নামার আসগই তিতন হনসম এক েুিপাথ-হদাকাতনর োমসন হাজির।হসরক রকম টিতপকযাল বাঙলার খাবাসরর উপাদান হযমন মানকচু, লতি, গ�রাি হলবু, থানকুতন পািা ইিযাতদ িার পেরা। তবসেিা মতহলাটি হবে ‘রণং হদতহ’ মূতিধহি এক গ্রাহসকর োসথ তকেু একিার দাম তনসয় উ�তকি বচো করতেল। হযসিই জিজ্ঞাো করল, - হকয়া চাতহসয় ?

-মুঙ্গা েুল হযা​াঁয়? স্ত্রীর মসন হয় েিসন েুসলর বড়া খাবার কথা মসন পসড়তেল! েুোদু আর িাোড়া ওিাসযসহিু রিচাপ তনয়�সণ োহাযয কসর িাই আমরা োনস�ই খাই। -মুঙ্গা েুল কযা কসরসঙ্গ?

-দাদাবাবু হক তলসয়, দাবা কা কাম হম আিা হযা​াঁয়। -ন�র হদ যাও, িুগাড়সক খবর কসরসঙ্গ। িনা ভুসলই হগতেলাম।হঠাৎ এক েকাহল একিা অপতরতচি ন�র হথসক হোন, ওঠাসিই এক ককধে মতহলা-ক�।“দাদা আপকা মুঙ্গা েুল হল যাও” বসলই লাইনিা হকসি তদল।বুিলাম হেই হদাকাতনর। যাবতক-যাবনা ভাবসি ভাবসি চসলই হগলাম। - ইসয় হলা, মুঙ্গা েুল। - তকিসন পপো হুয়া? মতহলা খযাঁাঁ ক কসর উঠহলন - হদসখা বাবু, তদমাগ খারাপ মি কসরা।এক হিা হমরা আদমী কাল হমরা হমাবাইল হবচসক দাু পীসক মে।মুেতকল হে ইসয় েুল িুগাড়সক দুেরা গ্রাহকসে হমাবাইল মাঙ্গসক কল তক হু।হিরা িতবয়ি টঠক হহা যায়, বে। গ্রাহক হমতর ভগওয়ান হযায়। কমতল ইেসক পপো নতহ হলগা। হলনা হযায় হিা হলা। আতম অবাক। তনসিসক খুব হবাকা হবাকা লাগতেল।তনসিসক কখসনা এি আউিস্মািধ লাসগতন। হঠাৎ মসন পসড় হগল, হয আত্মীয়-কাম-ব�ুসক তে-অে করসি আমরা প্রথম তদন এই হদাকাসন এসেতেলাম িারা হিা আিও হোন কসর িাসদর হপৌ​ৌঁোসনার েংবাদ বা আমাসদর কুেল-বািধা জিজ্ঞাো করার হেৌিনয তবতনময় কসরতন। শুর্ু স্ত্রীর হহায়ািেঅযাপ-এ একিা হমসেি কসরতেল ‘তরচড হে​েতল’। কমতল ি​ি​িসণ অনয এক গ্রাহসকর োসথ দরদাম করসি বযাে। দৃেযিা হকমন হযন িাপো হসয় আেতেল। র্ীর পাসয় হদাকান োড়লাম।বাতড়সি েুল হাসি তনসয় স্ত্রী বলহলন, আি হরাি হড, আর এই হ’লিার উপহার। হরাি হরাি এই েুল পাওয়া যায়না।আমার হরাি হড কমতলর িনয োথক ধ হল।

***** প্রস্তাব দিবস এখন েমে রকম তদনই পালন করা হয়। েকাল েকাল হহায়ািে অযাসপর হদৌলসি িানলাম আি প্রসপাোল হড। অতে​ে যাবার আসগ স্নান করসি তগসয় হঠাৎ মনীষার কথা মসন পসড় হগল। অসনক তদন আসগর কথা।েসব তবলােপুর হপাতটং হসয়সে, েদয তববাতহি। েরকাতর আবােন িখনও পাইতন, অতেসের কাোকাতে এক বাঙাতল পতরবাসরর বাতড়র উপসরর িলায় ভাড়া থাকিাম। ভদ্রসলাক

খুবই েজ্জন,পুত্রবৎ হস্নহ করসিন। আমার স্ত্রীর িখনও স্নািসকাির পরীিা বাতক।িাই কলকািাসিই তপিৃগৃসহ থাকসিন।কাতবয কসর বলসি হগসল, “একাই থাকিাম, একাই দু মুসঠা েুটিসয় হখিাম।” বাতড়ওয়ালা ভদ্রসলাসকরতিন-চার বেসরর নািতন মনীষা দাদুর কাসেই বড় হজচ্চল। েযামলা হমসয়, ডাগর হচাখ আর একমাথা হকা​াঁকড়াসনা িা​াঁকড়া চুল দুতলসয় দুতলসয় অনগলধ বকবক করি। আমার একাকীত্ব অসনকিাই দূর হি।একতদন এক বেস�র েকাসল হেভ করতেলাম, অতে​ে যাব বসল। মনীষা কখন তপেসন এসে দা​াঁতড়সয় আমাসক লিয করতেল, হখয়াল কতরতন। হঠাৎ হবে কায়দা কসর বলল– র র . . . তক চাই হিার মসন মামা, দাতড় কািসল হিামাসক হহজব্ব লাসগ, খুব হযান্টোম লাসগ। বললাম,হুম মসন খুব মিাও পাজচ্চলাম ওইিুকু তপজির মুসখ পাকা পাকা কথা শুসন। -িু তম মামসলি বানাসি পাসরা? যতদ পাসরা, আর আমাসক এখনই বাতনসয় দাও, িসব আতম হিামাসকই তবসয় করব। িু তম আমাসক তবসয় করসব হিা? আমার হচাখ ি​ি​িসণ কপাসল। তকেুতদন আসগ মনীষাসক হদসখতেলাম ও তিন-চার বেসরর তেশুকনযাসক তনসয় স্কুসল যাসচ্চ। আি পয� ধ এি তমটে প্রোব এ িীবসন আর পাইতন, পাসবাও না হয়ি। আমার Proposal day মনীষার িনয উৎেগীকৃি।

***** রেদে রে হিতড েব্দিা হোি হবলায় কখনও শুসনতে তকনা মসন পসড়না। বাংলা মার্যসম পড়িাম, মর্যতবি মানতেকিায় বড় হওয়া – হিতড মাহাত্ময হবািার আসগই পে​েব গি। এমনতক আিও বুজিনা, এর উপসযাতগিা তক! হবার্হয় এিাসকই হিনাসরোন গযাপ বসল। কখসনা কখসনা মসন হয় বড়সদর আনুষ্ঠাতনকভাসব পুিুল হখলার এক অননয েুসযাগ বা বযবস্থাই এই হিতড হড। হখলনার কথায়, িু লনযাত্রার কথা মসন পসড়। �াবণ মাসে িু লনযাত্রা হি। বারা�ার এক হকাসন ভাঙ্গা ইি, পাথর,কাসঠর িুকসরা িসড়া কসর, কাদার হগালায় হচাবাসনা কাপড় িার উপর তদসয় হেসক তদসয় পাহাড় বানািাম। হোি হোি চারা গাে, ডালপালা, হেওলা ইিযাতদ তদসয় হে পাহাড়সক প্রাণব� করার এক অিম প্রয়াে করা হি। কাসঠর গুাঁ সড়ায় তবতভন্ত রকম রঙ তদসয়, রাো, পাকধ,এয়ারসপািধ এইেব বানািাম। নকল পাহাসড় পুিুল রাম-রাবসণর যুদ্ধ, হনুমাসনর গ�মাদন পবিধ তনসয় উসড় যাওয়া, গুহার হভির হথসক বা -তেংসহর উাঁতকিু াঁ তক, তহমালসয় োর্ুর িপেযা, তনসচ েমিসল কাসঠর গুসড়ার রতঙ্গন রাোয় ট্রাতেক পুতলে, রঙ-হবরসঙর গাতড়, কি তক না থাকসিা। োরা বের র্সর হে​েব হখলনা পুিুল একিা একিা কসর হযাগাড় করিাম। টিতেসনর পয়ো বা​াঁতচসয় কি পুিুল হয তকসনতে। তচসলসকাঠার সর একাস� েব পুিুল কখন হয িীব� হসয় উঠি!িু লন োিাসনার এক অস াতষি প্রতি​িজি​িা হি পাসের পড়তে-ব�ু পলাসের োসথ। পলাে একবার আমার একিা এসরাসেন তনসয় পাতলসয়তেল, আমাসক িাইি হদবার িনয। পসর হবচারা ওর বাবার হাসি খুব মার খায় এই কারসণ। চার-পা​াঁচ তদন এই উৎেব চলসিা। হযা​াঁ, উৎেবই বসি। হেসষর তদন মা িাসলর বড়া বানাি। খুব মিা কসর হখিাম। িু লন হেসষ হেই েব োতটসকর কুতে-লবসদর একিা অযালুমতনয়াসমর স্কুলবাসে ম ু পাতড়সয় হরসখ তদিাম পসরর বেসরর িসনয। এবার পুসিার েুটিসি বাতড়সি তগসয় হদখলাম, মা এখনও যত্ন কসর হেই পুিুল-ভতিধ অযালুমতনয়াসমর স্কুল-বাে হরসখ তদসয়সে। ওসদর বয়ে একই আসে, আমরা কখন বড় হসয় হগতে!আিসকর হিতড-হড পলাসের িনয।
