The next phase of Barnsley’s trailblazing Health on the High Street initiative is unveiled.
We’re working with Barnsley Council, Barnsley Premier Leisure (BPL), South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYPFT) and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to bring health and wellbeing services together in Barnsley’s Alhambra shopping centre.
It's estimated more than 100,000 visits a year could be made to the Alhambra instead of to the hospital. This will not only free up space and alleviate parking issues at the hospital, but most importantly, will provide a more convenient and enjoyable experience for patients.
dnesday, media were invited to visit to find out more this partnership project, and they started by visiting the CDC.
The CDC has been instrumental in reducing waiting times, increasing attendance rates for appointments and improving patient satisfaction, welcoming approximately 220,000 appointments to date.

R&D’S achievements for financial year 2024/25
Barnsley Hospital’s Research and Development team are celebrating exceeding their targets for the financial year of 2024-25. The targets are set by the Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDN) to demonstrate that Barnsley patients are being offered the opportunity to take part in research as part of their care.
R&D work together with Clinical Teams to ensure that patients and/or their families are completely informed prior to receiving consent to take part.
The Trust’s target to recruit 600 participants was surpassed and we ended the financial year on 655 participants providing us with their consent and taking part in studies or trials throughout the hospital.
We’re pleased to have a diverse and balanced noncommercial portfolio spread across all CBU’s and are currently working on expanding commercial opportunities. This wouldn’t have been possible without the joint effort between our Research Nurses and Clinical Teams – A big thank you to all involved!
A number of participants have also provided feedback on their experiences via a survey called Participant in Research Experience Survey (PRES).
We exceeded our RRDN target, but more importantly, participants provided us with positive feedback about their experience:
“I liked the way everything was explained to me. It was all very easy to understand and I liked to think that I would be making an active contribution to very important research.”
“The staff were very helpful and willing to answer any questions that I had.”
“I don’t think anything would make it any better the whole experience from day one was very good.”
We also asked what improvements we could make, but the feedback received was favorable, and that their experiences were positive.
We look forward to growing research with the Clinical Teams in 2025-26!
