This week I had the opportunity to talk to delegates at our annual Proud to Care Conference.

I’ve worked in the Trust for over 15 years now and I continue to be amazed at the wonderful people I’m privileged to work with.

This week we’ve been delighted to receive top honours in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards.

I love Barnsley, and I love Barnsley Hospital. And one of the things I love the most about this place is the unwavering friendliness I’ve experienced every day from you lot out there.

I know this is not a universal experience, but I also know we’re working really hard to make it that way.

We’ll be sharing individuals’ experiences of the conference over the next few weeks and months in Proud News, on the Hub, and in Team Brief, so look out for that and most of allbe curious.

The Domestics Team at Barnsley Facilities Services has been shortlisted for the IHEEM Estates and Facilities Team of the Year Award, and it's no wonder why. This powerhouse team of 282 domestics, nine supervisors, and an exceptional Head of Service has dazzled throughout the challenging year.

Despite the pressures of new healthcare standards and rising costs, they smashed it out of the park.

The team recorded a whopping 97 per cent compliance in Mandatory and Statutory Training (MAST). Their efforts have earned glowing praise from all corners, with patients, staff, and execs singing their praises. With this IHEEM nod, their tireless dedication to maintaining top draw cleanliness and professionalism is getting the national recognition it deserves. Good luck team –you've already made us proud.

TrustScoops HSJAward forTransforming Children’sCare

The Trust is celebrating a huge win after bagging the HSJ Quality Improvement Initiative of the Year 2024 award at the awards ceremony in Manchester earlier this week.

Our groundbreaking NurseLed Discharge Project has revolutionised care for children aged 2-16 with minor head injuries, cutting waiting times in the emergency department by an incredible 28 per cent overall, and a staggering 75 per cent for those on the nurse-led pathway.

The project has resulted in faster care, quicker recovery, and less stress for families. Best of all, there were no missed diagnoses or extra reattendances, meaning safe, high-quality treatment for every child. The initiative has the potential to be scaled across the healthcare system, meaning even more children could benefit from this fantastic project.

Congratulations to the team on their achievement and a massive thank you for their hard work and creative solutions to deliver the best experience and care possible for our patients.

Around 200 people gathered over 2 days this week to learn more about our strategy, the NHS People Promise, and how our values support the care and services we provide.

“As a band 2 I didn’t feel I would take much from attending, thinking it was all about being a leader. I am so glad I was chosen to participate. Not once did I feel any less than anyone else at the sessions. I came away feeling so valued as a member of our organisation.”

PROUD TO CARE CONFERENCE 2024

Kim’sstory

Kim hosted this year’s conference, and told delegates the story of her connection to the hospital, having been born here, and starting her first job here at just 16 years old.

Over the past 16 years she’s developed as a support worker in maternity services and has amassed a wealth of experience, and her current role has helped her understand she is a leader, even if her job title doesn’t say so.

Kim’s very proud to work for Barnsley Hospital and is extremely proud to have you all as colleagues.

Thanks to Kim for her enthusiasm and for stepping in at short notice to support the conference.

Super nurse Stacey Hodgkiss has scooped a Cavell Nursing Award, stunning her colleagues with her incredible dedication to patients. Stacey thought she was off to a regular nurse meeting but was shocked when Deputy Nursing Director Becky Hoskins rocked up with the big prize. Becky enthused: “Stacey’s work as an Acute Pain Nurse is nothing short of heroic. Her skills and compassion leave a lasting impact on everyone she meets.”

Stacey’s tireless work with one particular patient won her high praise. She crafted a personalised treatment plan, transforming the patient’s experience. Becky added, “Even when times were tough, Stacey’s resilience and leadership shone through. She ensured every patient got top-notch care, despite a staff shortage. Truly remarkable.”
